JAYNE AUGOYE captures the story of 47-year-old deceased Nigerian inventor of mobile toilets, Mr. Isaac Durojaiye Agbetusin aka Otunba Gadafi, who will be buried today
Treading on a turf which many considered demeaning and dirty, Isaac Durojaiye Agbetusin a.k.a Otunba Gaddafi, earned a thriving sanitary business with over 19 branches in Nigeria and seven in the West African sub-region.
His story was that of perseverance and focus combined, even in the face of adversity. But at the end, he became a reference point for determined individuals desirous of making impact.
A master in branding, perhaps due to his background in Graphic Designs, late Durojaiye changed the face of sanitary health in the country and glamourised what he called ‘shit business’; a pointer to a saying that it does not matter what job one does as long as it is done diligently and legitimately.
Within a short time, his pay off line that, “Shit business is a serious business” has come to be associated with the deceased innovator.
Though the cold hands of death snatched him away last week at the age of 47, after a brief illness, Gaddafi had long etched his name in the sands of time.
Born in Lagos, he had his early education at Ipetu-Ijesa Grammar School, Osun State. He later attended Accra Polytechnic, Ghana, briefly before proceeding to Eastern College of Technology, United Kingdom.
While in the UK, he took up security jobs for private individuals and government. After a while, he became a credit card fraud investigator at the American Express Cards, UK.
However as disclosed in some interviews he granted newspapers before his demise, Durojaiye said his belief in Nigeria, made him take a bold step to come back home.
But surviving in Nigeria did not come easy. But he was prepared for it. He was believed to have traded off his belongings including his car stereo to be able to feed.
In no time, he was hired as the Chief Security Officer to the late acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election, Chief M.K.O. Abiola. But the defining moment, one that would change the course of his life, surfaced in 1991 while planning the wedding ceremony of his bosses’ son, Kola.
According to him, having been charged with handling security, he discovered that only two toilets were available for the anticipated 10,000 guests. He brought it to the attention of the planning committee and was mandated the task to look for a mobile toilet company.
So with three containers, he constructed 18 toilets, six toilets in each container and the result? Dignified Mobile Toilet was born in 1996. That year, the first wagon mobile toilet was created.
Initially, he had to battle with patronage for not a single order came for four years that the wagon was displayed.
Not deterred, he was involved in consulting and security businesses along with the sanitary job.
However, the mobile wagon toilets were eventually hired and the rest they say is history. During an Interpol conference abroad in 1999, he saw some plastic mobile toilets, took interest in them and later imported 40 of them.
As one who identified business opportunities when faced with a challenge, he decided to look inwards by manufacturing after encountering difficulties in importation.
Till date, more than 3,000 mobile toilets equipment of international standard have been manufactured. The first toilet was constructed with N90, 000 and today, DMT toilets are being used as official toilets in some states in the country.
Recently, his outfit established a bio-gas plant designed to process and convert sanitation waste into cooking gas and electricity.
While alive he proudly brandished the self-styled title of the Senior ‘Agbepo’ of Nigeria (SAN) and was once quoted as saying that he desired to be the Bill Gates and Dangote of shit in Nigeria. Although his vision was cut short in his prime, Gadaffi undoubtedly left behind shoes, too big for any individual who does not wholly share his vision to step into them. There will certainly be tears and emotions today for this distinguished Nigerians as his remains are being committed to mother earth.
