The Sokoto State government spends between N44 and 45 million on the payment of beggars allowances in the state monthly, Governor Aliyu Wamakko has said.

Wamakko in an interview said he introduced the payment of allowances to the beggars four years ago to alleviate their sufferings.

"We are spending between N44 and 45 million monthly on the payment of allowances to beggars in the state. Each of them earns N6,500 monthly.

We devised this means to address the issue of Almajiri/ beggars on our streets. I believe they should be respected, they should be taken care of and they should be made to feel loved," he said.

Wamakko said plans are underway to take beggars off Sokoto streets, adding, "We have been meeting with their leaders on how to take them off the streets. They have agreed to move out of the streets and on our part, we have agreed to review their allowances upward".

In addition to the payment of the allowances, Wamakko said arrangements have been completed for a skills acquisition programme for the beggars with a view to making them productive and contribute towards the development of the state.

He said he established the Almajiri Integrated School to address street begging among children.
