An Upper Area Court in Jos on Friday sentenced a suspect, Sunday Kuryaske, to five months imprisonment for stealing two goats.
Kuryaske was convicted for stealing the goats valued at N14,000 belonging to Mrs. Mary Burwafuri.
The court, however, gave the convict an option of N4,000 fine.
The judge, Malam Mustapha Hassan, said the prosecution had convinced the court that the accused committed the offence.
Hassan said the confessional statement of the accused assisted the court to convict him.
“The court relied heavily on section 157 (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) to convict the accused,” the judge said.
Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Mr. Gokwat Ibrahim, told the court that the accused stole the animals at Angwan-Jarawa area of Jos on March 15.
Ibrahim said the accused was caught while carrying the goats to the market by the neighbours of their owner.
He said the convict was handed over to the Laranto Police Station for interrogation, adding that he pleaded ‘guilty’.
The prosecutor said the convict therefore committed an offence contrary to section 287 of the Penal Code.
When the case came up for hearing, the convict pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court for leniency.
The judge warned him to desist from stealing.
