30001  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Fire Mysteriously Eviscerate First Gay-friendly Mosque In South Africa on: 4-10-2014 07:45 PM

Last month, Gistmasnia brought you the news about South Africa’s first gay-friendly church called the “Open Mosque” which had sparked quite a bit of controversy. You will recall that authorities in Cape Town, where the mosque is located, were planning on shutting down the  facility, over allegations that the building violated some city planning regulations.

However, the mosque was damaged by a fire yesterday night, according to reports. There were no casualties or injuries, and no arrests have been made.

Founder of the Mosque, Taj Hargey, expressed that he believed the incident was a deliberate arsonist attack. He alleged that footage from closed circuit cameras revealed some unidentified people who visited the facility two hours before the incident.
Police authorities are currently investigating the matter. The mosque, which allows women to lead prayers, allows Christian worshipers, and welcomes gay people, opened  in Cape Town last month despite opposition and threats of violence.

30003  Forum / The Buzz Central / I won't Talk About My Marriage Because It's Bad For My Business - Kcee on: 4-10-2014 07:08 AM
A lot of speculations have been flying around town recently about Limpopo master KCee’s marital status ever since he publicly denied being married.

Once again, in a new encounter with Saturday Beats this week, the singer refused to answer the question when he was confronted.

“If I am married or not is for another day, not today. It is a discussion for another day. Anything you hear about the matter is for another day. The air has been cleared but it is an issue for another day,” he had a dailies. However, a source in his camp told Saturday Beats that the singer or any of his ‘people’ would refuse to reveal the truth because they felt it was bad for business.

The singer who was recently tongue-lashed by his fans on social media over his fashion style said that he caused the agitation. He said:

“I made people talk about my fashion sense; I started it. The truth is that in this industry, when you are quiet and you want people to talk about you, one can do anything. I started talking about my fashion sense on Instagram and for those that know me and follow me, they would confirm that I am a fashion icon. Nigerians feel that when you call yourself a fashion icon, you are being proud and that is why they were criticizing my style. Each time I create such controversy, I gain about 2000 new followers; so I keep doing it.”

KCee who is fond of flaunting his wealth on social media told Saturday Beats that he didn’t have any regret, saying that’s how he loves expressing himself.

“I just like to express myself and that is why I flaunt what I have on social media, even the American celebrities do the same. If they buy new things or they are going anywhere, they put it on the social media. It is just a way of keeping the die-hard fans aBosom  of what we are doing. It is not a problem neither is it an issue but for those criticising it, I feel it is normal. No matter who you are on earth even if you are a pastor, people would criticise you. Even Christ was criticised, so who am I?” he said.

30008  Forum / Sports / Five English Clubs Could Qualify For Next season’s Champions League on: 3-10-2014 07:43 AM

UEFA has confirmed that up to five Premier League teams could qualify for next season’s Champions League.

The top four clubs at the end of the season are usually sure candidates for Europe’s elite competition, but they could now be joined by the Europa League winner. Tottenham Hotspur and Everton are the two English representatives in the Europa League and there were suggestions that the automatic places from England could be reduced to three, if either team won.

A UEFA statement read: “The Europa League winners could gain direct access to the group stage, should the Champions League title-holders also qualify via their domestic league, thus freeing up a place in the Champions League group stage.”

In 2005, Everton finished fourth in the league, but Merseyside rivals Liverpool, who finished outside the top four, were allowed into the competition after they won the competition.
30009  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Thomas Duncan {US Ebola Patient} To Be Prosecuted By Liberian Government on: 3-10-2014 07:37 AM
Days before he became the first person diagnosed with Ebola on American soil, Thomas Eric Duncan answered "no" to questions about whether he had cared for a patient with the deadly virus.

And now, the Liberian government says they "will seek to prosecute" if Duncan lied on his health screening questionnaire before leaving West Africa.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf told Canadian public broadcaster CBC on Thursday that she would consult with lawyers to decide what to do with Duncan when he returns home. Johnson Sirleaf told CBC:

"The fact that he knew (he was exposed to the virus) and he left the country is unpardonable, quite frankly. I just hope that nobody else gets infected. With the U.S. doing so much to help us fight Ebola, and again one of our compatriots didn't take due care, and so, he's gone there and put some Americans in a state of fear, and put them at some risk, and so I feel very saddened by that and very angry with him, to tell you the truth."

Before leaving Liberia, Duncan had answered no to a question about whether he had touched the body of someone who died in an area affected by the disease. CNN is also reporting that Duncan's family in the States said he hadn't mentioned any exposure to Ebola in Liberia. His girlfriend says he told her he hadn't been in contact with anyone with Ebola.

Wilfred Smallwood, Duncan's half-brother, told CNN on Thursday that he doesn't believe Duncan knew he had Ebola when he left Liberia for the United States. But he said it isn't out of the ordinary to come to the assistance of suffering people. Asked about whether Duncan had contact with Ebola patients, he said, "(it's) what we do in Liberia -- our tradition is to help somebody who needs help."

Another American has been infected with the ebola virus while working in Liberia.

The 33-year-old man, who was not identified by name, was working as a freelance camera operator for NBC News as part of a crew of five that featured the network's top medical reporter Dr. Nancy Snyderman, who has been in Monrovia reporting on the outbreak. That makes the cameraman the fourth American to contract the often-deadly virus in Liberia. Two doctors were in infected in July, Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, and a third, Dr. Rick Sacra, was diagnosed last month.

The cameraman will be flown back to the States for treatment, NBC said. Snyderman and the rest of the crew will also be brought home to the U.S. via private jet. Once they arrive, they will be placed on quarantine and monitored for 21 days. The news comes just two days after the first case of ebola was diagnosed inside the United States.
30011  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / SMH: Federal Government Set To Privatise Airports on: 2-10-2014 10:12 PM

The Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprise, Mr Benjamin Dikki, today in Abuja said the privatization of federal airports in the country would commence soon.
He made this known in his presentation on “Reforms and Privatisation Opportunities in Nigeria” at the ongoing 9th Abuja International Trade Fair, stressing that although the Government had made substantial investment in the aviation sector, a lot still remained to be done, and this is one of the reasons the Government is considering privatization.

“We are planning to commence the privatisation of airports; the airports will be more efficient if the private sector is running them.
“Very soon, we will engage the Minister of Aviation and we will start a new process of privatising or concession of airports just like we have done with the seaports.
“We are likely to grant concession of maybe 15 to 20 years, according to the business model agreed on, so that investors can make a reasonable return on the investment during the concession period,”
he said.
30012  Forum / Sports / “Everything Changed After The Africa Cup Of Nations” – Emenike Reveals on: 2-10-2014 09:55 PM

Emmanuel Emenike has admitted that he is ready to be dropped from the Super Eagles squad, if coach Stephen Keshi thinks he is the problem of the national team.

According to reports, the Fenerbahce striker was dropped from the starting line-up, as Nigeria lost 3-2 to Congo in the 2015 AFCON qualifier in Calabar, because Keshi was not happy with his form and performances. The 27-year-old frontman, has however insisted that he always gives his best whenever he is called upon.

“I have always treated Keshi like a father, and he has always lived in my heart to be a good father,” africanfootball.com quoted Emenike as saying on Wednesday.
“Before now, we have enjoyed a smooth relationship and I see no reason why he should be holding a grudge against me.“Keshi is good coach, a coach with high pedigree. I give him all the respect I can give my father whenever I come for a national assignment. “Before the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, I could remember he called me to have a chat and I was ready to give him my best. “My performance at the competition was inspired by Keshi. He showed me love, he put me through and I have always respected his decisions. I never thought that I am bigger than any coach.”

Emenike also pointed out that things began to unfold between him and Keshi after the last AFCON tournament, which Nigeria won in South Africa last year.

“Everything changed after the Africa Cup of Nations. Everything about him towards me changed and I decided to stay on my own,” he said.

“But I am very surprised by what he said that he and some players are not happy with me. Over what?

“I have maintained a solid relationship to avoid quarreling with him, but if my invitation to play for Nigeria does not stand for peace, I will like to stay with my club.

“I have always loved to give my best for Nigeria and I always make it known that I can always fight to score goals for my country and I will not like Keshi to let Nigerians see me as an undisciplined player who is not ready to give them my best again.

“My Eagles career is as important as my club career.

“Coming to play for Nigeria was the biggest decision I have ever made in my life. And I appreciate the way the fans have been striving hard to cheer me whenever I push for goal.

“I have never seen the Super Eagles as my father’s house. It’s a temporary place for everybody. Why should we be making problems for ourselves?

“As a matter of fact, I have no grudge with anybody in the team. I see everybody as my friend, I tried not to distinguish myself from any other player, as far as we have come to serve our country, we are equal.”

The Ajman Police have busted a gang of five Nigerians that robbed the Al Mustaqbal money exchange of Dhs275,000 (N13 million), including various foreign currencies. According to Dubai news website GulfToday, Brigadier Sheikh Sultan Al Nuaimi, deputy Ajman Police chief, said that the incident took place last week when the gang members entered the exchange, assaulted its employees, threatened them with toy guns before emptying the premises of its cash and fled.

The gang members entered the country on a visit visa, which expired long time ago. He added that the police operations room received a call about the robbery at around 10.30 pm last Thursday. However, the suspects managed to escape before the police arrived on the scene, as the employees failed to activate the alarm in order to alert the police.
Lt Col Abdullah Saif Al Matroushi, director-general of CID at Ajman Police, said that police formed a special team to investigate the case.

“The police team used sniffer dogs to trace the movement of the suspects and found the shirt of one of the suspects and a toy gun used in the crime.

The police also used the footage obtained from surveillance cameras installed at the exchange house and the street, which assisted in revealing their car plate number and its description. One of the suspects was arrested in a street in Sharjah. He then led the police team to his accomplices in Dubai. In conjunction with the Dubai Police, the team raided the house of the suspect and arrested the other four.

30016  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / LOL! Politician Vandalises Pipeline In Ogun State To Raise Campaign Funds on: 2-10-2014 07:40 AM
Operatives of the Inspector General of Police Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism have arrested a self-confessed politician, Wahab Junaid, for vandalising a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation pipeline in the Obafemi/ Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The officer-in-charge of the task force, ACP Friday Ibadin, said Junaid, aka Doctor, was one of the unit’s most wanted pipeline vandals. He explained that Doctor was arrested at Ifote village in the local council. Reports learnt that Doctor had allegedly been arrested and arraigned three times, but was discharged and acquitted. However, the 59-year-old politician said he went back to vandalism in order to raise money to contest a political post in 2015. He said:

“After I regained my freedom in 2012, I stopped anything that has to do with pipeline vandalism. I am an active member of a political party in this state (Lagos). So, when the slot for the House of Representatives was zoned to my area, my people nominated me to represent them. Since I know that I had a good chance of winning the election, I accepted. I was told to go and look for money to sponsor my campaigns. In the course of looking for funds, a friend of mine, Oloje, who is also a vandal, informed me that the area was calm, and that I could come and lift some fuel and get money for my political ambition. I was waiting with my tankers to lift the product when policemen arrested me. My enemies, who are bitter that I was anointed for the political position, betrayed me. Please forgive me and give me another chance. I am sorry and I promise that as soon as I am elected, I will assist the police in the war against pipeline vandalism."

Juniad said a full tanker could be bought for N1.5m from vandals and sold for N3m. Junaid, who claimed to be veterinary doctor, said he was first arrested and arraigned in court in 2008.

“I was discharged and acquitted in 2010. I was also arrested at Epe in 2010 and after several months, I regained my freedom again. The third time was in 2012, when policemen from FESTAC division arrested and arraigned me in court. I was able to secure my freedom yet again.”

The task force boss, Ibadin, explained that after his latest acquittal, the unit got a tip-off that Junaid had returned to bursting pipelines and had successfully moved several truck of petrol from pipelines in Lagos and Ogun states. Ibadin said:

“On September 15, 2014, detectives acted on an intelligence report that Junaid was back and currently operating with his boys at Ogere. Detectives, led by Ogere Sector Commander, ASP Shakwallo Philemon, stormed the area, arrested him and also recovered three big valves already mounted on NNPC right of way. This is the fourth time Junaid will be arrested by the police. We are still on the trail of his accomplices who managed to escape. We will again take him to court and we hope that he will get what he deserves this time around.”

In another development, the task force also busted an illegal local refinery at Osara, near Lokoja in Kogi state. The owners were said to have fled as soon as they sighted the policemen. Ibadin said the taskforce was still combing the village for those who constructed the refinery.
30017  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Protesters Storm Abuja! Protest President's Inaction On Chibok Girls on: 2-10-2014 07:18 AM
Several protesters today stormed Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, to register their displeasure with what they called the Federal Government’s disregard for the plight of more than 200 schoolgirls abducted in Chibok, Borno State in mid-April. A group called the Citizens Arise Movement of Nigeria (CAMON) organized the protest at Eagle Square, Abuja. The protesters moved around the Federal secretariat in the capital city, chanting anti-government songs that expressed dismay with the state of affairs in Nigeria. The coordinator of the group, DIno Melaye, condemned President Goodluck Jonathan's speech to mark the country’s 54th Independence anniversary. He said the speech was uninspiring and flayed the president’s reluctance to speak on the fate of the 219 girls abducted by insurgents on April 14. A one time member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Melaye also accused Mr. Jonathan of doing too little to fight corruption, asserting that most of the country’s ministers were neck deep in sleaze.

“I want to say that the president’s speech this morning is not different from the one he had been giving before. It has become a normal tradition. Unfortunately, the president addressed the nation this morning, the 54th birthday of Nigeria and he did not say anything about the missing Chibok girls. This is calamitous and painful,” said Mr. Melaye. Mr. Melaye said the Nigerian constitution conferred on the president the status of a father, adding that Mr. Jonathan should be concerned about the plight and welfare of Nigerians in line with section 14 of the constitution.

According to him, President Jonathan “is not the father of the nation because no father will have missing children, 219 of them, and would carry on as if nothing is amiss. We are here to tell the president he needs to be born again. He needs to respect his oath of office.”

The protest leader added that Mr. Jonathan “swore to protect the lives and security of Nigerians on the 29th of May, 2011. He held the Bible and the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Section 14 of that constitution is very clear, that the security and welfare of the people will be the primary objective of government. “But the president has forgotten the welfare of the Chibok girls. He has forgotten the welfare of missing Nigerians. We are not happy. We are calling on the president to demonstrate capacity.” Mr. Melaye also called on the president to speedily bring an end to insurgency in Nigeria, stressing that there would not be any meaningless development without security of lives and property of the citizenry.
“Insurgency must stop now, killings must stop now, unemployment must stop now, insecurity must stop now, corruption must stop now,” said the outspoken former representative.

Asked why his group chose to protest on Nigeria’s Independence Day, he said, “We are here today as Citizens Arise of Nigeria to demonstrate and protest against maladministration, protest against corruption, insurgency and ineptitude in government. “We are here to say that Nigerians are disenchanted and disillusioned about the state of affairs in the country. Nigerians are yearning for good governance. Nigerians are demanding government with capacity. Nigerians are for a president [who] will behave like a true commander of the Armed Forces.”
