41  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Pastor William Kumuyi (Deeper Life) Remarries. on: 25-10-2010 02:09 PM
Eighteen months after he lost his wife, the superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, has found love again.

The wedding, which happened outside the spotlight, was reported to have taken place in the UK, last Wednesday. However, the bride, who sources identified as Esther, is said to be a member of his church. But not much else is known about her, or about their courtship. Details of the wedding ceremony, including venue and attendance, officiating priests, protocols, were closely guarded.

Responding to a question whether he would remarry after his late wife, Biodun, passed away, the man of God told reporters that it was too early to think of a replacement. It was a highly emotional moment for him, as the bad news came to him while he was delivering a sermon during the church’s Easter retreat last year.

Mrs. Kumuyi who died at 57 in the early hours of Saturday, April 11, 2009 at her residence in the International Bible Training Centre, Ayobo, Ipaja, Lagos, following a brief illness, was the National Woman Co-ordinator of the church. She was also International Co-ordinator of the women ministry in Africa and other continents where the church has branches, and was Editor-in-Chief of the well-circulated Women Mirror magazine published by the church.

Pastor Kumuyi, 71, was introduced to the Apostolic Faith Church, and became born again on Sunday, April 5, 1964. He started the Deeper Life Bible Church, which now has over one million members in more than sixty countries around the world, as a 15-member Bible Study group in Kumuyi’s official quarters (Flat 2) at the University of Lagos in August, 1973. Kumuyi was at the time a Mathematics lecturer in the university.

Kumuyi is the latest entrant to the fold of pastors who have new wives: Pastor Taiwo Odukoya of the Fountain of Life Church, Pastor Chris Okotie of the Household of God, and Pastor Ituah Ighodalo of the Trinity House. Only Odukoya, like Kumuyi, remarried after losing his wife, Bimbo.

Nigeria court rejects 'forced marriage' case

A Nigerian high court has dismissed a case brought by a 26-year-old woman who says her father forced her to marry a senator.

The judge said her human rights had not been violated and it was a matrimonial matter for an Islamic court.

Zainab Isa Mayana was married to the senator of Zamfara State, Sahabi Ya'u, 54, in July at a ceremony where she was represented by her father.

She says she has never met him and her father knew she was already engaged.

Sokoto, where the trial took place, was one of several northern states to re-introduce Sharia law after the return to democracy in 1999.

'Courageous'

The BBC's Haruna Shehu Tangaza in Sokoto says that these days forced marriages are frowned on in the predominately Muslim north of Nigeria.

People have generally supported Ms Mayana and she has been seen as courageous in bringing the case against her father and Senator Ya'u, he says.

Judge Isiyaku Mohammed said under the constitution, the federal court could not intervene in the affairs of an Islamic court.

Ms Mayana was not in court for the ruling, but her lawyers told the BBC they would not relent in their efforts to dissolve the marriage as she was not married to a man of her choice.

They said they would file a new case at "an appropriate court", which by implication would be an Islamic court, our reporter says.

Ms Mayana, who is studying at Ahmadu Bello University, says she has been engaged to another man for five years.

Senator Ya'u was already married before his wedding to Ms Mayana in July, although it is not known exactly how many wives he has, our correspondent says.

Under Islamic law, a man can take up to four spouses.

Wait, those can't be real,  can they?

Kanye West showed off his sparkling new smile on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Tuesday, courtesy of diamond and gold teeth implants on his bottom row. And no, it's not a grill, he says.

See photos of Kanye's old teeth

"You ripped all those teeth out and put in that?" an incredulous DeGeneres asked.

"I just thought the diamonds were cooler," West replied. "I guess there's just certain stuff that rock stars are supposed to do."

West, who first tweeted a photo of his blinged-out teeth in July, further explained his new mouth of hardware in the November issue of Vanity Fair.

Kanye West: "I contemplated suicide"

"I just like diamond teeth and I didn't feel like having to take them out all the time," he said.

What do you think of Kanye's flashy choppers?

The minor hawkers are I.K Ochine, Salisu Ibrahim, Madu Mpam, Tunde Famakinde, Ibrahim Muhammed, Sahadu Adamu, Francis Isha, Suleiman Usman and Aminu Yakubu.

Those sentenced are Ubaka Okeke, Sanusi Mustapha, Awalu Yahaya, Hannatu Galadima, Abdul Usman, Abuchi Igwe, Nelson Madela, Umar Mahammudu, Chioma Ugwu, Isah Umar, Rabiu Muhammed Fatima Abubakar. Joy Joseph, Suleman Ibrahim, Adebayo Sade, Mustapha Ahmed, Murtala Sani Suleman Usman, Daudu Abdullahi, Nuhu Muhammed and Sahabiu Saidu

The prosecutor, Barrister Eze E. Eze, had earlier told the court that the accused persons were arrested by the task force of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) while hawking at road junctions and unauthorized places within the FCT, an offence punishable under Section 35 (1) of the AEPB Act No 10 of 1997.

The accused persons pleaded guilty when the charge was read to them and begged for leniency, promising not to do it again.

The prosecutor urged the court to try the accused persons summarily under Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Magistrate Aminu Abdullahi sentenced each of the 21 hawkers to one month's imprisonment with an option of N3,000 fine and ordered that the minors be given seven strokes of cane.

The magistrate also ordered that the items seized from those sentenced should be released to them while those of the minors should not be released until they brought their parents.
45  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Ovadje, others discover cancer cell killer plant on: 21-10-2010 04:44 PM

LIKE her inventor father, Brig.-Gen. Oviemo Ovadje (rtd), Pamela, has begun a scientific journey showing signs of a great future.

Pamela, a doctoral student at the University of Windsor, Canada along with her colleagues, has discovered cancer-killing properties in a common weed that grows around homes.

The story of their discovery, which can be accessed in Google, Pamela Ovadje, Cancer, Windsor, Canada, is like the story of Pamela's father, Dr. Ovadje, who several years ago, invented the Eat-Set machine that has won for him several awards worldwide. The machine is deployed during operations to harvest the blood of the patient for auto-reinfusion that eliminates risks of external infections and contamination.

The University of Windsor students and their supervisors discovered that the dandelion, a nuisance weed that ruins the beauty of a well-manicured lawn, holds tremendous promise.

To Pamela Ovadje and Sudipa Chatterjee, the common weed is a potential lifesaver that they believe has the ability to kill some types of cancer cells.

A dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) root extract the graduate students created in their biochemistry lab caused commercially available human leukaemia cells to effectively commit suicide within 24 hours, they reported in an article published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology.

Co-authored by postgraduate student Carly Griffin, undergraduate Cynthia Tran, biochemistry professor Siyaram Pandey and Windsor Regional Cancer Centre oncologist Caroline Hamm, the article says the extract "contains components that act to induce apoptosis (cell death) selectively in cultured leukaemia cells, emphasizing the importance of this traditional medicine and thus presents a potential novel non-toxic alternative to conventional leukaemia therapy.

"It started cell death activity in leukaemia cells very quickly," said Chatterjee, who defended her master's thesis September 15. "They were almost all dead within 24 hours. In fact, they even continued to die after the extract was removed."

Dandelion extract is available in an alcohol-based formula, but the students used a water-based formula and an extraction method they developed themselves. The cancer cells were then treated with the extract and analysed. Each of the tests was repeated thrice to make sure they got the same results.

The students are excited about their results but know that seeing them transformed into actual leukaemia treatments is a long way off.

"What you see in vitro doesn't necessarily mean you'll see it in animals or humans," Ovadje cautioned.

But Dr. Pandey said their research -funded by the local Knights of Columbus, Council 9671 - provides the lab with a strong platform to test the extract on patient-derived leukaemia samples and animal models.

And the students are still hopeful the results may provide a "stepping stone" for the development of a more efficient therapy for leukaemia and possibly other diseases such as melanoma, colon and pancreatic cancer.

Chatterjee and Ovadje won awards for presentations of their research at the Third Annual Cancer Drug Discovery Symposium in Sudbury, while Griffin won a similar award for a presentation on her research on cancer and pancratistatin - a natural derivative of a Hawaiian spider lily plant that has shown promising results - at the Natural Health Products Research Society conference in Halifax in May.

Shocker:Niger State PDP dumps IBB

Excerpts:

", Niger State PDP Chairman, Dr. Adulraham Enegi, gave the hint while receiving a delegation of Jonathan/Sambo Presidential Campaign Organisation at the party’s secretariat in Minna.Babangida hails from Niger State and the loss of support in his home base is likely to wreck his bid.
Enegi, while addressing the delegates led by the Director-General of Jonathan/Sambo Campaign Organisation, Ambassador Dalhatu Tafida, urged them to take note of Jonathan’s achievements since he became the President.
He said delegates from the state chapter would be fair in casting their votes at the forthcoming PDP primaries.
Specifically, he eulogised landmark achievements of Jonathan within 100 days in office, including the signing of the Hydro Power Producing Areas Development Commission bill into law
While observing that past administrations abandoned the HYPPADEC bill, which was intended to cushion the effects of electricity generation on host communities, he said Jonathan quickly identified with the masses by assenting to the bill.
Jonathan’s assent to the bill will benefit Kogi, Niger, Kwara and Kebbi states, regarded as power-producing states in Nigeria.
Enegi said, “I want to thank, appreciate and acknowledge Jonathan for signing the Hydro Power Producing Area Development Commission bill into law within 100 days in office. Somebody was there for eight years but could not do anything. We have noted it.
47  Forum / The Buzz Central / Rejected By Sade Adu: Jay-Z, Drake, And Kanye West (Collaboration) on: 20-10-2010 01:07 PM
Hov came calling & Sade said NO…To a collaboration that is. Jay-Z is one of the greatest Hip-Hop icons EVER, but that didn’t convince Sade to duet with him. In a recent LA Times interview the Nigerian-British songstress also admitted to turning down collab or sample requests from other prominent rappers like Drake and Kanye West.

She tells writer Nelson George;

I’m too scared. They’ll find me out. It’s likeThe Wizard of Oz. They’ll find out there’s nothing there. As for collaborations, I’m collaborating with the band and do what we do. I see myself as a member of this band who does these songs that we write.

Sade definitely doesn’t need a Jay/Kanye collabo to enhance her career…the chick (and her band) release ONE album a decade…and it always goes multi platinum leaving fans the world over wanting for more!

In my opinion the excuse she’s given the LA Times interviewer is just her being humble. Clearly she’s happier living the quiet life on the rolling hills of the English countryside…while sitting on her £40 million fortune of course!

The interview also touches on her relationship with her father, the long gaps between album releases & touring again.

srael has barred its state airline El Al from making flights to Nigeria because of concerns about terrorism.

Israeli Tourism Ministry official Rafi Ben Hur says the ban will affect thousands of Nigerian Christians who had planned to fly to Israel during the upcoming pilgrimage season, which runs from later this month to January.

The original plan called for El Al to carry out the round trip flights on behalf of a Nigerian firm.

Last December, a Nigerian man was arrested on charges of trying to blow up a plane flying from Amsterdam to the U.S. city of Detroit, Michigan.

Ben Hur says the Nigerians will most likely have to rely on other air carriers for their flights to and from Israel.

goggle the law case between him and the T&T squad from the 98 world cup.
No wonder, members are barred from taking FIFA our its national associations to court.

52  Forum / Sports / Nigeria's Amos Adamu Offer To Sell Fifa Hosting Rights For £500,000 on: 17-10-2010 07:55 PM

FIFA are considering postponing the decision on the 2018 and 2022 World Cups as they investigate allegations that two senior members offered to sell their votes.

Although some members are insistent the vote should go ahead on December 2 as planned, Press Association Sport understands that a postponement is being talked about in senior circles of the world governing body.

England, Russia, Spain/Portugal and Holland/Belgium are bidding for the 2018 World Cup while USA, Australia, Qatar, Japan and South Korea are campaigning to host the 2022 tournament.

FIFA's ethics committee will this week start investigations on a Sunday Times expose of two members of FIFA's 24-man executive committee, Amos Adamu from Nigeria and Tahiti's Reynald Temarii, president of the Oceania Football Confederation.

Reporters from the newspaper posed as English-based lobbyists for a consortium of private American companies who wanted to help secure the World Cup for the United States.

At an initial meeting in London, Adamu is said to have told reporters that he wanted $800,000 to build four artificial football pitches in his home country.

Temarii is also alleged to have asked for a payment, in his case to finance a sports academy.

When contacted by Press Association Sport, Adamu refused to comment. Temarii was unavailable for comment.

A statement from FIFA read: "FIFA and the FIFA ethics committee have closely monitored the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups and will continue to do so.

"FIFA has already requested to receive all of the information and documents related to this matter, and is awaiting to receive this material.

"In any case, FIFA will immediately analyse the material available and only once this analysis has concluded will FIFA be able to decide on any potential next steps.

"In the meantime, FIFA is not in a position to provide any further comments on this matter."

The Oceania Football Confederation today announced they were investigating the reports.

A statement said: "OFC is aware of the story that appeared in The Sunday Times in England today. As such, OFC is currently looking into the matter."

Adamu told the Sunday Times he had been talking about business in Nigeria after the World Cup and insisted his vote was not for sale.

A European nation will definitely host the 2018 World Cup after the USA announced on Friday they would focus on 2022 alone.

53  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / C N N :: Flooding Displaces Nearly 700 People In Nigeria on: 16-10-2010 02:22 PM
(CNN) -- Nearly 700 people in a small town within Lagos, Nigeria, will be moved to a relief camp due to heavy flooding that has plagued the region since September, according to a state governor.
Babatunde Raji Fashola made the announcement Monday while on a tour of flood-impacted areas.
In all, 681 people from the town of Ajegunle will be relocated to camps specially built for relief efforts, he said.
The flooding began last month when the Ogun River rose above its banks after the opening of a dam. No casualties have been reported.
While speaking to affected residents, Fashola emphasized that the area is in a flood plain and that people must be ready to move.
He said that the government alone can't solve the problem and they need help from everyone in the area to get through the flooding and limit the damage, asking residents to refrain from using flood-stricken roads.
"We have to wait for this water to subside," Fashola said. "Nature will take its course, but what we can do as a people is work together to mitigate the advanced consequences."
The commissioners for Special Duties, Health and Environment will work together with emergency management officials to relocate the displaced residents, Fashola said.

Now this is just SAD!!

(CNN) -- Folashade Abugan is the third Nigerian athlete to have failed a drugs test at the Commonwealth Games in India, where she won two silver medals, it was revealed on Friday.
Abugan, who came second in the women's 400 meters last week and the 4x400m relay on Tuesday, has been stripped of both of her medals after testing positive for the banned anabolic substance testosterone prohormone.
The 20-year-old, who was world junior champion in 2008, has waived her right to have her "B" sample tested, the Commonwealth Games Federation said a day after the four-yearly event finished in New Delhi.
"Folashade Abugan returned an adverse analytical finding from a test conducted on October 8, 2010, after competing in the women's 400 meter final," the CGF said in a statement.
The news comes as a blow to the Nigeria team, who were already reeling following the failed tests of both women's 100m champion Osayemi Oludamola and Samuel Okon, who came sixth in the men's 110m hurdles.
That duo tested positive for the banned stimulant methylhexanamine.
The CGF statement also said Abugan has admitted liability for the failed test, and she has been disqualified from all the events she participated in.
"Ms Abugan wrote to the CGF waiving her rights to have her "B" sample analyzed and a hearing, as provided for within the CGF Anti-Doping Standard (ADS). She also admitted liability.
"She has been disqualified from all events she participated in during the Games, with the results nullified. This includes her silver medal in the women's 400 meters.
"As she was also a member of her country's second placed 4x400m relay team, that result is also nullified."
The silver medal she obtained in the 400m will now go to Aliann Tabitha Pompey of Guyana, with Christine Amertil of the Bahamas being promoted into the bronze medal position.
England's quartet of Kelly Massey, Victoria Barr, Meghan Beesley and Nadine Okyere have been elevated to second position in the 4x400m relay, with Canada's Amonn Nelson, Adrienne Power, Vicki Tolton and Carline Muir now claiming bronze.
55  Forum / Relationships & Romance / Natural Vs Superficial Beauty: What's Your Take Guys! on: 15-10-2010 04:57 PM
In 2004, Americans spent over $12.4 billion on cosmetics. This total is only 33 percent larger than the amount needed yearly to provide water and sanitation for all of the people in developing nations. The amount spent is barely larger than the amount needed each year to provide reproductive health care for all women in developing countries; ironically, cosmetics are often advertised as symbols of women's rights and independence. (Statistics from www.medscape.com).

Beauty in a superficial form has eclipsed any natural allure, chiefly because of what the media portrays as beautiful. One can only be “Beauty to the Fullest” with a face FULL of makeup, with lashes as FULL as a hair extension, with a head FULL of weave, hair follicles FULL of relaxers, a body not FULL of fat … says society.

Superficial enhancements are acceptable, to an extent. The butt & boobee injections are far beyond the extent(Lawd have mercy, I hate that s*it). From my own observation, I believe that they can easily become detrimental to women in our society. We go from using those hair extensions to boost the way our natural hair looks to needing those hair extensions (hiding our own hair). When we become unaware of what the enhancements really mean in our life, sometimes some of us become lost, and need them.

Funny enough, its the men who are responsible for all sorts of garbage the fashion industry has to offer, while the women openly receive it and even passing it to others evenhandedly without a protest; talkless of having a second thought of effecting an edifying modification before consumption. It’s sickening how we become obsessed with these products, how we feel obligated to them. This is malevolent because when someone is obsessed, they’ll go beyond the limit to obtain. In the end, you’ll have boxes of weaves, cases of makeup, nail appointment after nail appointment, clothes bursting out of your drawers, shoes by the dozens… and a negative bank account/ bad credit to match - to the excess of prostituting to feel among or let me use the word looking good as they profess. Guys have you noticed how "beautiful" she is in the morning when what drew you to her at first is virtually lost. Given the fact that they say it's all because of the men. If I don't look good they won't come after me, said a very close friend of mine.

Is it really that serious? NO. If you’re assured with your own God-given splendor, why buy the extra? I'm not saying making up is bad. Many women have thousands of Naira in materialistic things going through this cycle spent wrecklessly, but I’ve come to terms that they're beautiful enough to not rely on their clothes (even though they’re very important to them lol), makeup, weave,  nails, or anything else with a price tag. If you don’t like the way you look without any beauty aid, you don’t like the way you look period, because after 5 hours of adding this and that, that’s not even you. It's an artificially enhanced you! Natural beauty is extraordinary; makeup guarantees flawlessness sure, but unaided beauty is what’s really unflawed. The doubts of “I wonder how she looks without the Indian Remy, without the 3-pound eyelashes, contact lenses, without the layers of powder?” won’t even exist, and the certainty of “Wow, she’s gorgeous all alone, no help necessary” will arise.
I’m elated that recently, more and more women are deciding to join some form. I’m seeing more afro puffs that were previously labeled “nappy”, I’m seeing more dreadlocks, less relaxers. It’s something like a movement. I hope it's note new trend in town that'll fade off. Some of the girls caught up in all the hype might have something insignificant to say about their discharge from fraudulence, and even some of the guys. (You know they say they want something real, then they go pick up the chick that needs her nails, as long and colorful as possible, done weekly. The chick who’s detachable hair touches her waist-line. The chick who has 7 Gucci bags but is avoiding creditors' calls).

Do what is going to make you and keep you happy. Not shallow, but authentic happiness. I love African ladies especially my country's. I think they'll help our genration alot if they'll stand up to say no the fraudulent white folks who aren't as blessed and beautiful as they are!

EFCC to disqualify 54 PDP aspirants

GOMBE—IN its determination to stop corrupt politicians from participating in the 2011 general elections, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday, identified 54 corrupt aspirants on the platform of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP.

The commission said it has forwarded their names to the party to disqualify them from contesting for any public offices.

Special Assistant on Public Enlightenment to the EFCC Chairman, Dr. Abubakar Othman, who disclosed this during a courtesy call on Governor Danjuma Goje, however, did not name affected aspirants but promised that the same thing would be done for other political parties.

Othman said he was in support of death penalty for corrupt practices, stressing that such measure was imperative, considering the damage done to the nation by corruption.

He noted: “If you consider the quantum of money stolen by such persons and the attendant hardship inflicted on the ordinary people, one sees a clear manifestation of animalistic behaviour.’’

While assuring that the commission was not going back on its decision to bar corrupt politicians from contesting in the 2011 general elections, he stressed that the commission’s decision to bar corrupt politicians was being “misconstrued’’ in some quarters who were bent on dissuading the anti-graft agency from sanitising the nation’s polity.

Othman said the EFCC was determined to carry out its plan in the best interest of the country, adding that the commission had been keeping a tab on the financial transactions involving some corrupt politicians currently aspiring to contest in the 2011 elections.

He said the commission would stand in the way of corrupt officials to electoral success adding that the EFCC planned to work with the political parties and INEC in disqualifying corrupt aspirants, “but if all else fails, their names will be made public.”

Othman said the commission had embarked on public enlightenment across the country to ensure that Nigerians were duly informed on the need to elect credible politicians into public office.

Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Bage, who represented the governor, said the state government would support  the commission’s actions that were deemed to be in the overall interest of the country.

The EFCC team was in Gombe on enlightenment tour of the state.

58  Forum / Politics / my Brother Was Faking My Voice' Says Okah on: 15-10-2010 04:23 PM
The trial of Henry Okah resumes this morning in a Johannesburg courtroom with a gripping reading of excerpts from his diaries that were seized by South African police during a raid on his home.

Mr Okah was in the courtroom with his wife.

The prosecution read these out before listing its reasons for opposing Mr Okah's bail bid.

Some of the reasons listed for opposing the bid include: ‘Okah and Jomo Gbomo are one and the same person;' ‘applicant can easily exit this country without a trace;' ‘the applicant will attempt to intimidate and eliminate witnesses;' and ‘the applicant faces some of the most shocking charges known to man. , If released on bail and murdered, or escapes justice, the international community will criticise the justice system of the Republic.'

But the diary contains more shocking entries. These include:

‘We met with Orubebe, jonathan's desire to run for President. They require me to co-operate with so-called militants,'
‘Nearly everyone is a bounty hunter for me'
‘My brother, Charles has faked my voice and has been collecting money all this while,  he has been negotiating a ceasefire claiming to be me. What treachery is this?'

Okah takes the stand to testify.
His affidavit reads: "I deny I had to obtain permission in order to participate in Aljazeera interview."

"My life is in danger, I do not trust the Nigerian government."
"I do not trust the manner in which food is presented in the prison."

Okah says the invoice being used as an exhibit by the prosecution was sent by Niger Delta minister, Godsway Orubebe. He said the Nigerian government sent Orubebe to him with a quote for guns, asking him to help them get a second quote from the South African government and that he told them he wasn't a contractor.

"I told them I would not help them to buy guns to kill my people," he said.

On his alleged involvement in bombings, he said: "I am a sympathiser of the cause. That for me is where it ends."

"I fled my home. The way they came into my home, I believed them to be assassins sent by the Nigerian Government."

On the diaries, he said, "I have hundreds of books on guerilla warfare, video tapes, it is my passion. Some of these things contained in these diaries are notes on those books."

He said all this when he was being questioned by his lawyer. Prosecution says it isn't ready to cross-examine Okah as he wasnt told by defense that Okah would take the stand. Judge agrees with him.

The trial started yesterday and the judge is expected to rule on the bail request this afternoon.

Ekiti State governor, Segun Oni, has been relieved of his job as the federal appeals court rules this afternoon in Ilorin that his opponent and Action Congress governorship candidate in the 2007 election, Kayode Fayemi was the rightful winner of the election.

The court, ruling on a legal challenge to a rerun election held in the state last year, cancelled the result of voting in Ido Osi and Ifaki, saying these were concocted. The 8000 votes were then deducted from the PDP result - thus handing over victory to the Action Congress candidate.

The judges lampooned INEC and Police's handlings of the 2007 and 2009 elections in the state.
