Forum / Religion / Survey Shows That Religion Is Fast Fading In America, With Just 50% Believe In God |
on: 18-03-2016 07:08 AM
| Around the world, people are beginning to turn their backs on religion. A new study has revealed that with each passing generation, Americans too are steadily becoming less religious. The number of people in the US who claim religious affiliations or attend Church has dropped. And, the belief in God is dropping as well. The study published in the American Journal of Sociology examined US data from the General Social Survey, which is conducted every two years. Comparisons with data from Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand revealed an overall drop in religious belief over time. In one example, the team found that 41 percent of people aged 70 and older reported they attend church services at least once a month. For people just under that age bracket, 60 and younger, only 18 percent attend church at this frequency. And, just 45 percent of people ages 18-30 reported they have 'no doubt God exists,' compared with 68 percent of those 65 and older who said the same. The researchers say the data remains consistent over time, reflecting the trend seen elsewhere in the world. | | |

Forum / Education / University Of Ibadan Rusticates 80 Students Over Poor Academic Performance |
on: 17-03-2016 09:58 PM
| Eighty students were expelled from the University of Ibadan at the end of the last academic session for poor academic performance.Vice Chancellor of Nigeria’s premier University, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka, disclosed this today at the matriculation of 4008 students for the 2015/ 2016 session. The event which was postponed last week held at the university’s International Conference Centre. Twenty-eight of the expelled students came from the sciences, while 20 came from Agriculture and Forestry department. Arts produced 13 of them, Basic Medical Sciences 1, Public Health 1, Social Sciences 6, Education 4, Technology 5, and Veterinary Medicine 2. Olayinka told the freshmen that other reasons students could lose their studentship include: examination misconduct, unruly behavior, indecent behavior, vandalism, miscellaneous hall offences, unauthorized use/displacement/damage to university property, pilfering, insubordination, direct sale of bed space/squatting in halls of residence, membership of secret cult(s) on campus, illegal participation in the National Youth Service Programme, illegal registration as full-time student, and infringement of other university regulations. “Any of the under-listed is a criminal offence which must be referred to the Police: fraud, theft, burglary, assault occasioning bodily harm, murder, membership of a secret cult inside or outside campus, possession of fire-arms, arson, rape, possession and/or use of hard drug and drug trafficking and other criminal offences”. Olayinka advised the new students tasting freedom for the first time that freedom is not absolute. “Those of you who are leaving home for the first time would realize that you are now exposed to enjoy a measure of freedom, which you may not have enjoyed before, as you are no longer under the watchful eyes of your parents. This freedom, however, has its limitations. In other words, your freedom ends at the point where you trample on the fundamental human right of others, or when you infringe on the rules and regulations of the University”. He urged the new students to be studious. “Let me inform you that at the University of Ibadan, we do not tell students what to think. You have to learn to think for yourselves. Our teaching is designed to produce intellectual self-reliance-to teach you how to learn and how to take charge of your thinking. We encourage you to be independent in your judgment and critical in your analysis. We work to help you develop these skills here at UI, and we hope you will retain them for life. They will continue to serve you as you experience a world that is constantly and rapidly changing. I, therefore, want to charge you not to restrict yourselves to your field of study alone so as to profit maximally from the numerous activities that will be presented to you throughout the duration of your course in the university”. He warned the students to comport themselves in a manner that is befitting of an undergraduate student and or new postgraduate student of this premier institution, as the university would not tolerate any act of hooliganism and wanton destruction of properties – all in the name of students’ demonstration, indecent dressing, prostitution and or any other social vices”. Olayinka also warned students against cultism and segxwal harassment. “Cultism by all estimation is evil and those who associate themselves with it are also evil. For this reason, you should not go into any relationship without thorough investigation. The approach employed is that the cultists camouflage in different colors to recruit members. You should live a modest life and avoid flaunting your financial disposition in public, as this is a veritable attraction to the hoodlums who engage in cultism”. The 4008 students admitted by the university this year rank the highest in recent times as admission was pegged at 3000. The Vice Chancellor disclosed that out of 23,219 students that made 200 and above that were invited for Post-UTME, 19,292 sat for the exam out of which 3,225 were given admissions adding additional 783 admitted were from 2,512 applicants received from Direct entry. “Those that make the institution first and second choice with score 180 and above were 32,587. Those that make it first and second choice with score 200 and above invited for Post-UTME were 23,219. Candidates who sat for the Post-UTME were 19,292 and candidates that were cleared for admission were 3,225. 2,512 applied through Direct entry and those offered admission were 783”. “A breakdown of the undergraduate admission on a faculty-by-faculty basis are: Agriculture and Forestry 408, Arts 618, Medicine 550, Education 784, Law 147, Pharmacy 90, Science 571, Technology 369, The Social Sciences 351, and Veterinary Medicine 120, totalling, 4,008”. | | |

Forum / Politics / Hmmm! Senate Discovers 25 Fresh Errors In The 2016 Budget Amounting To N37bn |
on: 17-03-2016 08:16 AM
| Members of the National Assembly have reportedly discovered 25 fresh errors in the 2016 budget while making last-minute checks in preparation for the passage into law of the appropriation bill. The items involved are allocated about N37, 025, 238, 407 in total. The Nation reports that of the amount, about N21,623,323,649 was voted for office repairs which has now been classified as “avoidable” by the Senate and House of Representatives committees on Appropriation. The committees were also said to have drawn the attention of the ministry of Budget and National Planning to the fresh errors. Chairman of the senate committee on appropriation, Senator Danjuma Goje, and the chairman of the house committee on appropriation, Hon Jibrin Abdulmumin, were making frantic efforts Wednesday night to meet next Tuesday’s deadline for the passage of the budget. The errors identified have to do with duplication of budget line items; budget items with quantities not specified; budget items with no location; large amount of money being appropriated for rehabilitation/repairs of office /residential buildings and purchase of office furniture and fittings; budget items repeated over the past four years; curious budget line items; non-priority budget items; and wrongly classified budget items. A document obtained from the National Assembly lists the breakdown of the errors, including curious budget line items (N6, 411,661, 956); duplication of projects(N3,567,605, 395); non-priority project items (N5, 422, 647,407); office repairs/rehabilitation(N21, 623, 323, 649). “From the budget, we have discovered that the vote for the generation of 700 MW from Zungeru hydropower project was duplicated seven times and titled MOPWH161021632-40. For the same project, the amounts voted are as follows N750m, N113, 465, 000, N139, 426, 180, N126, 624, 383, N93, 767, 500 and N160, 000, 000. “The National Bureau of Statistics projected to spend N256, 920,000 and N230, 705, 000 in the same budget on procurement of equipment, vehicles and furniture. At our session, we were amazed that we could still be having two estimates for the same project. Also, the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) is planning to execute Integration of Road Reference System with N150, 940,000 (FERMA 18015998) and N15,000, 000 (FERMA 18021621) respectively,” the document stated. The document added “With due respect to SGF Babachir Lawal, we have realised that those in charge of the budget of OSGF might have committed blunders. For 2016, the OSGF has budgeted N1, 710, 322, 610 for procurement and installation of security system. The same office budgetted the following amounts in the last three years on the same item: N527, 000,000(2013); N1, 161, 356, 582(20140 and N316, 420, 274(2015) | | |

Forum / Business / FG Authorise SON To Jail Dealers Of Sub-Standard Goods For 10yrs With No Option Of Fine |
on: 17-03-2016 07:09 AM
| The Federal Government has given authorization to Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to imprison dealers who sell substandard products. They said SON has the authorization to jail defectors for ten years. SON has since started with Tyre dealers. They have given a 24 hours ultimatum to tyre dealers all over the country to destroy every fake tyre in their stock or face 10 years imprisonment without any option of a fine. Acting Director General of SON, Dr. Paul Angya, gave the ultimatum at a stakeholder’s forum for tyre dealers in Lagos, stating. He said fake tyres have been the leading cause of several deaths in the country based on a recent report by the Road Safety Commission. Adding that out of 8,986 accidents recorded in 2015, 722 were due to tyre bursts, which has led to the death of 446 persons He said: “Our new Act 2015 empowered us to jail promoters of sub-standard product up to 10 years and we will not relent to jail any culprit. ‘’We are going to stamp out corruption among the tyre dealers, “we are going to set up a taskforce and we will not sleep until we confirm that accidents in the country are not traced to substandard tyres again.” “We are ready to eliminate importation of sub-standard products into Nigeria, because of this we have reached out to other government agencies to ensure that we work together and stop smugglers of fake products into the country. “If you have fake tyre in your shop make sure you disposed them in the next 24 hours, thereafter our team will visit you and we will charge you for murderer. “To eliminate corruption from SON, we are going to introduce e-payment, e-invoice and e-receipt to stamp out corruption from the system,” He said the organization is also working on improving the standard of products that are sold to consumers. Adding: “To ease our work and improve quality of goods and products in Nigeria, we are working to improve expansion of SON facilities across the country so that people in Sokoto will not travel to Maiduguri to text their products” “What many of our farmers do before they can take their products to abroad is to first take it to Ghana laboratory for text, once the goods pass through text in Ghana the products will send to abroad in the name of Ghana and Ghana government will take the glory.” | | |

Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / EFCC,Warns Corrupt Ex- Officials To Come Out Of Hiding Or Be Fished Out |
on: 17-03-2016 06:40 AM
| The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has gone tough with a final warning to top officials implicated in the stealing of huge sums of public funds to come out of their hiding and face its interrogating teams once and for all. The warning, Vanguard gathered, was borne out of the refusal by many of the key players of the Jonathan’s administration to honour several invitations extended to them by the commission to clear their names against huge sums of money traced to them and their cronies ahead of the last general elections. Top on the list of those on the run, who are being expected by the EFCC to return and account for huge sums of money traced to them are two former ministers of finance and justice, a former northern governor and PDP chieftain and a one-time Comptroller General of Customs. Apart from the former customs officer, who is said to have made away with funds belonging to the agency, the rest have been fingered in the mismanagement of the $2.1billion cash meant for the procurement of arms to fight insurgents in the Northeast. Vanguard learnt that one of the former ministers is hiding away in Dubai while two others are believed to be holing away in the Scandinavian region under the guise of studying in order to evade prosecution for depriving the federal government of a huge sum of oil-related funds. One of the former ministers, who reportedly coordinated the sharing of a huge sum of N3.1 billion ahead of the last election, sneaked out of Nigeria at the weekend apparently to avoid being arrested and questioned for her role in the looting. The EFCC, Vanguard learnt, was working round the clock to secure the arrest of the fleeing suspects through the involvement of Interpol and the American Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI. | | | |
