A mild drama played itself out on Tuesday night at the Hearthrow Airport when the wife of a former governor in one of the Southern states was duped of £200,000 (about N50m) by one of her aides.
It was gathered that the ex-governor's wife (name withheld) waited for over four hours at the airport to receive the said money from the aide, but was shocked when it dawned on her that the aide had absconded with the money.
Nigerian Tribune learnt that the aide had a day before her boss departed the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, for London, been given the £200,000.00 for onward delivery before she played a fast one on the former First Lady.
The aide (name withheld) was said to have bought a Virgin Atlantic air ticket to London and had even checked in her luggage in the presence of the unsuspecting former first lady to convince her that the trip would be made immediately her boss board an earlier flight.
It was also learnt that the former governor’s wife decided not to be on the same flight with her aide because doing so could arouse suspicion from security operatives at the airport which could lead to the checking of their hand luggage.
Sources at the airport told the Nigerian Tribune that no sooner had the erstwhile First Lady's aircraft taken off, than the aide reportedly cancelled her flight which was expected to take off a few hours after that of her boss.
It was further learnt that immediately the former First Lady arrived in London, her first port of call was their newly acquired mansion on Ashmore Road, where she hurriedly dropped her luggage and raced back to the airport for the aide whose flight was expected to arrive in a few hours.
Immediately the arrival of the aircraft was announced, the former First Lady was said to have stood at the arrival hall for several hours without seeing the aide.
She was said to have concluded plans to open one of the biggest fashion houses in the UK around Edgware Road with the money and had even commenced renovation works on the building before she was duped.
Nigerian Tribune gathered from sources in London that pressure from close friends and even relatives of the embattled former First Lady on her to report the development to the Metropolitan Police and its Nigerian counterpart was rebuffed.

The wife of the former governor was said to have immediately put a call through to her husband in Nigeria to inform him about what a source described as ‘the unfortunate development’.
