In a press briefing recently to herald commencement of the yearly Igue festival, which is sponsored by First Bank, the Chief Priest of Benin kingdom, Chief Nosakhare Ishekure disclosed that a total of $10 million dollars is injected into the Nigerian economy through the Western Union money transfer in collaboration with First Bank, adding that a bulk of the transfers are from Benin professionals abroad, and is meant for the upkeep of their homes.

"I want to say that the allegation that Western Union Money Transfer is becoming more progressive because our girls go abroad to do some sort of business is a lie. It is just mere blackmail. We have professionals there. Today Western Union remits almost $10 billion. This is statistically recorded and the money is coming from professionals; well educated people who left in my own time. I left this country in 1975 and those who left before us-professors, doctors, lawyers, businessmen are doing well. So, if the only way they can send money home is through Western Union, so be it. They explore that avenue to send money home regularly. It is not because of prostitution; it is because of our professionals abroad. And I believe that the economy has blossomed because of the need and the desire of our people to maintain their parents and brothers here."

Ishekure commended First Bank, describing it as partner to the festival over the last ten years.

Earlier, Head, Western Union Nigeria, Mr. Uyi Ojo, on behalf of the bank, appreciated Edo people for their patronage, especially those in the Diaspora.
