People have asked why I risk the wrath of friends and ‘frenemies’ to say the things that many people think but no one says out loud.

Simple: I am committed to your success. Many would like to keep these secrets from you. Not me.

Religion is big business in Nigeria. Millions cannot live without it; it is their link to God, to life on earth and in the hereafter. I see you look at many of these big clergy men who wear suits worth thousands of dollars and ride in cool private jets and think, ‘God, what holy act of worship will make me similarly endowed?’ Sometimes, especially after struggling so hard and getting so little, your faith begins to waver; you wonder if God is indeed the source of all the wealth. Consider me an answer to your prayer. Listen.

First, you need to look like you have what you are trying to sell. You need to look like God has been good to you. Invest in suits and ties and shoes. No big bushy beards. That’s for those crazy juju people. People should, at the point of meeting, have no doubts about you. What? Should you perm or grease your hair? Don’t ask me. That one is a personal decision. Just look good. But if you are bald like me, I would say don’t be too creative with the hair.

Invest in a good sound system. You need to use a microphone that enhances your voice. Then you need external speakers that will declare your presence in the neighbourhood. It does not matter if your neighbours are not believers or if they consider it a nuisance. Only those with the spirit of darkness are irritated by the spirit of light. It doesn’t matter if you have six members, you still need the external speakers when you are praying, dancing or singing. You need the speakers at night during vigils- it is not your fault that some people can’t sleep when there is noise.

You need to show that you have power from God. You need to demonstrate the potency of this power. Miracles are one sure way to do this. In a country where getting basic things like water electricity and healthcare can seem like magic, people are desperate for miracles. Simple things like getting a job, owning a house, and getting pregnant are good raw materials for miracles. However, here you need to be careful not to commit a blunder.

Don’t do risky things like declaring you can cure HIV/AIDS. There are easier ways; low-risk miracles. Say to a congregation of 1,000 people that someone here will get a new car this year. Or to a congregation with over 100 married couples that someone will get pregnant this year. Chances are that there will be that lucky person and that person will recognise this as a miracle and do the appropriate thing: come for testimonies and thanksgiving. The more testimonies you have, the more potent your power. The more potent your power, the greater the likelihood that you will buy that private jet.

Another way of demonstrating power is prophecy. This one requires plenty of skill.  To earn the title of ‘Prophet’, you need to invest time in understanding patterns and politics. Then you can accurately foretell the future. The more general the prophecy, the safer. Avoid mentioning specific names and places and dates. Say things like a ‘very important man will die this year’. Or, ‘this country will witness a disaster this year but God will see us through it’.

Please, you do not have to be a prophet to be a successful man of God. One bad prophecy can ruin your business for good. So my advice is, if you are not sure how this works, stick to the miracles.

In Nigeria, demons and witches are the cause of every evil thing; from barrenness to joblessness to singleness to poverty. You need to be adept at casting out these demons and witches. You need to show your power. Show a witch that you are powerful and believe me, you will make an impression. Where will you find demons and witches? They will come to you. When they come, humiliate them. Slap a witch in public and all other witches will be petrified of you. You are, after all, anointed of God. Crimes like assault do not apply to you.

So what do you do when you have been sufficiently blessed and your business has grown substantially? Buy that private jet. It does not matter that you live in a country where poverty is the status quo. It does not matter that your members struggle to pay their tithes from lean salaries. This is the will of God for you: that you prosper. And how else can you prove your prosperity if you can’t be wasteful and own a private jet?

Let bad belle people keep talking. Good luck in this noble, righteous path to success. And God bless your hustle.https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/355_30194637010_724387010_1009619_2753_n.jpg

10  Forum / Politics / Kentucky church bans interracial marriage on: 2-12-2011 06:49 PM
A small Kentucky church has chosen to ban marriages and even some worship services for interracial couples. The Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church, located in Pike County, made the vote in response to a longtime member who is engaged to a man whose birthplace is in Zimbabwe.
Other pastoral leaders in the area were quick to denounce the church's vote. "It's not the spirit of the community in any way, shape or form," Randy Johnson, president of the Pike County Ministerial Association, told the Lexington Herald-Leader.
The small congregation, which usually hosts about 40 members each Sunday, held the vote after longtime member Stella Harville, brought her fiancé Ticha Chikuni to church with her in June. The couple performed a song together at the church in which Chikuni sang "I Surrender All," while Harville played the piano.
Chikuni, 29, who works at Georgetown College, is black--and Harville, who was baptized at the church but is not an active member, is white. Dean Harville, Stella's father, said he was told by the church's former pastor Melvin Thompson that his daughter and her fiancé were not allowed to sing at the church again. However, Thompson recently stepped down and the church's new pastor, Stacy Stepp, said the couple was once again welcome to sing.
Stepp's decision prompted Thompson to put forth a recommendation saying that while all members are welcome at the church, it does not "condone" interracial marriage, and that any interracial couples would not be received as members or allowed to participate in worship services. The only exception? Funerals.
The Harville family has formally requested the congregation to reconsider the interracial ban, and Thompson has also said he would like to resolve the issue, the area CBS affiliate WYMT has reported.
A copy of the recommendation, obtained by WYMT, reads in part:
That the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church does not condone interracial marriage. Parties of such marriages will not be received as members, nor will they be used in worship services and other church functions, with the exception being funerals. All are welcome to our public worship services. This recommendation is not intended to judge the salvation of anyone, but is intended to promote greater unity among the church body and the community we serve.
Members of the church held a vote on Thompson's proposed language, with nine voting in favor and six voting against. The other members in attendance chose not to vote.
Gawker notes that Pike County is 98 percent white and home to the infamous Hatfield-McCoy feud.
The Harville family doesn't see Gulnare's new policy promoting anything like unity or civil peace. "They're the people who are supposed to comfort me in times like these," Stella Harville said.
And Stella's father was much more forceful in his denunciation of the interracial ban. "It sure ain't Christian," Dean Harville said. "It ain't nothing but the old devil working."

The U.S. government may soon own one of Michael Jackson's white gloves, a $530,000 Ferrari and a $30 million Malibu estate if it succeeds in seizing them from the son of a corrupt African dictator.

In a case kept hidden from public view until last week, the U.S. Department of Justice says it's pursuing more than $32 million in assets from Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, whose father Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has ruled over oil-rich Equatorial Guinea for 32 years -- and has been accused by authorities around the world of illicitly siphoning hundreds of millions of dollars for himself and his family.
A 2010 U.S. Senate report detailed how Obiang the younger, known as Teodorin, had moved $110 million into the United States through shell companies and anonymous transactions, propping up a hard-partying lifestyle that included spending $30 million on one of Malibu's largest mansions and a $38.5 million Gulfstream V jet. Obiang was also known to collect supercars like they were Hot Wheels, with at least 32 cars and motorcycles at one point, including eight Ferraris, two Bugatti Veyrons and a $2 million Maserati.

While the U.S. Department of Justice has said a probe into Obiang had been ongoing since 2004, the first signs of legal trouble for Obiang came from France, where authorities seized 11 of his cars last month, including the $2 million Maserati MC-12. While the Justice Department had sought seven cars from Obiang in California, its latest request mentions only one -- a 2011 Ferrari 599 GTO.

The documents unsealed last week in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles offer the first glimpse of the case built by the Justice against Obiang, accusing him of spending more than $100 million garnered from extortion and embezzlement in Equatorial Guinea. The feds also revealed how Obiang bought $3.2 million worth of memorabilia from Michael Jackson's estate earlier this year, including the white crystal-studded glove Jackson wore on the "Bad" tour, the MTV Music Video Award for "We Are The World" and several of the life-size figurines Jackson used to keep at his Neverland Ranch.

So far, no representatives of Obiang's has officially responded to the government's bid, and the Justice Department has not yet responded to a request for comment from Yahoo! Autos. Human Rights Watch, an advocacy group long critical of inaction against the Obiang family, has called on the United States and other countries to move against the clan despite their control over a key oil supply.

“The move to freeze Teodorín’s assets in the U.S. is overdue,” said Arvind Ganesan, business and human rights director at Human Rights Watch, in a statement. “But the real test will be if the U.S. government vigorously pursues the inquiry to its conclusion without letting diplomatic or business ties stand in the way.”

13  Forum / Business / “It’s Going to Get a Lot Worse”: ECRI’s Achuthan Says New Recession Unavoidable on: 2-10-2011 06:21 PM
Weakness in leading economic indicators has become so pervasive the Economic Cycle Research Institute now predicts a new recession is unavoidable.
"The vicious cycle is starting where lower sales, lower production, lower employment and lower income [leads] back to lower sales," co-founder Lakshman Achuthan declares in the accompanying video.
Whereas Achuthan said the jury is still out in late August, the weakness in leading economic indicators — and ECRI uses a dozen for the U.S. alone, he notes — has become a "contagion" that is spreading like "wildfire."
Although the recovery has been "subpar" by nearly every measure, Achuthan refutes the idea the economy never got out of recession in the first place. "Just because it looks and feels a certain way doesn't mean it's a recession," he says. "You haven't seen anything yet. It's going to get a lot worse."
It's too soon to predict just how bad it's going to get, but he expects another spike in unemployment and further expansion of the federal government's $1 trillion deficit. This forecast has huge ramifications for the 2012 election and the already struggling U.S. consumer and Achuthan says a "mild" recession is the best-case scenario.
By now you may be wondering what separates ECRI's recession call from the myriad other recession calls out there. First, ECRI's primary raison d'etre is predicting recession and recovery calls. Second, and more importantly, The Economist reports ECRI has never issued a "false alarm" on a recession call, meaning many of the Chicken Littles currently declaring "the sky is falling" might actually be right this time around.
14  Forum / Religion / THE OFFICE OF THE PRIEST AS GROWING CAREER FOR PEOPLE, on: 2-10-2011 05:07 PM
Jesus Christ did not suffer on a cross to provide career jobs for bishops, priests, pastors or evangelists. He died as He said "to seek and to save the lost." If Christ had to endure such horror and agony, salvation must be an awesome thing. The cross is the epic scale by which to measure the power and value of salvation. Thank you Jesus.
