But if a man has already received his own share of his father's property (including family lands) while alive, and the man happens to have only female children, those properties goes to his wife when the man dies and the wife can do whaever she wants with those properties (including the family lands) and can even sell them if she wants. But if the same man with only female children dies before getting his own share of his father's property, he wife will get his husband's share of the property but can not sell the family, though it belongs to her and her daughters till they all get married, but she can not sell them. Other things in the land she can sell. This practise is no longer common because if does not favour women, but many families still enforce it, however, it is the basic tradition in majority of Igboland

Different tribes have different cultures when it come to property sharing. Even in Igboland, laws governing property sharing differs. But in majority of the clans in Igboland, the lands (the family land which the man inherited from his father, which kept on going from one generationto another) is shared among the male children, but anyother property including land which the man acquired/bought with his money is sharing among all the children. In some cases, the female children is settled with other properties (money, cars, houses or even good education) so that they can allow the male to share the family land. The reason behnd this is because the female will marry out and get their own share of land through their husbands. The family land are meant for residential homes (building family houses). The females are not espected to live with their husbands in their father's home. They are espected to leave their father's home and move in with their husbands in their husbands' home, as such females can not build a family home for themselves and their husbands (and children) in their father's home. Besides their (females) childen can not get married to their mother's home. Incase a woman does not have a male child, she & her children gets her share of the family land and other properties. She can use the other properties as she wants (can even seel them if she wants), but the family land she keeps till her children gets married and she gets old and die, but she can not sell the family land and her daughters can no longer lay claim on the family land immediately they get married because as soon as their mother is no more, the land will then be taken over by the male children. Most times, the wife without a male can addopt a male child to be her hair aparent, but sometimes this causes misunderstand if the adoption is done after the man' death as the other family may not accept the boy as a family member. Some women will also let their daughter have a male child for them before getting married but this is not an acceptable practice in most areas in Igboland and this usually cause problem as other family member will not accept the boy and will either ssend him to his father or force the girl to take him along when he is getting married. Some men may also adopt a male child for their wife who has no male child before his death. This usually does not cause problem as other family members will have no reason to reject the boy because their father (the man of the house) accepted hin while he was alife
This is the traditional practice but there are out of variations and each man deides how he wants his property shared among his children.
