I should have made it clear that I meant discuss with my friends here in the US; most often when we go into conversations on international economics and relations of which this case always crop up - considering some of them are Nigerians too and some have seen this guys for real unlike myself.

So what's the point?

Like I often *discuss* with my friend about the short and long run effect of "Yahoo" on the Nigeria. While it is easy to assume that it's scam, evil, etc. I argue that it's a better alternative to Nigeria's economic situation.

Please note, I might not have a full perspective of this (I'm not based in Nigeria and never really witnessed Yahooing 1st hand). I argue that, in the short term, in some way, this creates employment (whichever way you look at it) which means in a lot of way decreases crime and for the economist out there - a boast in GDP (because of an increase in Consumption Spending, I'm pretty sure this Yahoo guys spend a lot).

I believe it's easy to link a certain rise in crime to the recent curbing of Yahoo boys (supposedly by EFCC), well, what this means is that - you're are creating a gross unemployment since, if you discourge them from employing themselves, you are not in any way creating an alternative and this guys/girls need to continue living, hence, they resolve to crime.

I know some might frown at my support for Yahoo, obviously in the long-term, it's no good on the reputation of Nigeria. But then, I would say, a way to curb this is NOT by arresting guys trying to create a livelihood but for the government to create alternatives that would incent this guys not to commit crimes - such a proposal is what I would leave to the thieves themselves - the government.
