1  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Mixed Reactions Trail Omisore’s Bus Donation To OAU Students on: 5-08-2014 08:18 AM

Senator Iyiola Omisore

Ahead of the forthcoming Osun State Governorship elections on August 9, the PDP governorship aspirant, Senator Iyiola Omisore has donated a bus to the Students’ Union of the Students’ Union.

The donation of the bus has caused mixed reactions among the students, while some of the students welcomed the receipt of the bus by the Students Union, others, however were not in support of receiving it.

One of the students, who negated the receipt of the bus, Sola Adebola, accused the SU government of selling the rights of the students.

He explained that it was not right for the executives of the SU, led by Isaac Ibikunle, to receive the bus during the period of election.

Another student, identified simply as Bimpe, lamented that political aspirants wanted to use students to achieve their ambition.

He said: “I am surprised the Students Union would collect such in our absence. We are not on campus and I see no reason why the SU will proceed to collect the bus despite the hike in fee challenges and the shutdown of the institution. It is wrong. We don’t need a bus. What will the bus do in the problems we are facing?

“We are on strike and OAU is a federal school, being governed by the Peoples Democratic Party. Why can’t he resolve our strike challenge first? The last time he (the President) promised to solve the problem, we later realised it was a lie. This is propaganda from him. It will not make us vote him in.”

But the Students Union, in a communiqué signed by its President, Ibikunle Isaac and Secretary-General, Shittu Olatayo, said it collected the bus to aid students’ movements during protests.

The communiqué read in part: “Since the inception of our administration, it is a known fact that the political gladiators from major political parties have been engaging us, seeking our support just, as it is being done all over the state. But our position has always been that they should do projects for OAU students, such as donation of buses and scholarships, among others. In particular, both the All Progressive Congress and the PDP have promised us a bus each.

“Meanwhile, on Thursday July 31, 2014, the PDP gubernatorial aspirant, Omisore, donated a brand new 18 seater bus to the Students’ Union. This indubitably will aid the mobility of the Union, especially in times of struggle, and make the Union enjoy mobility autonomy as against the constant seizure of the Union’s bus by the management whenever the Union has issues with the University.”

2  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigerian Prostitutes led by their champion, Patoo Abraham Protest On The Streets on: 5-08-2014 08:11 AM

The commercial sex business is largely frowned upon in Nigeria but one woman seeks to change that.

48-year-old Patoo Abraham has led protests in Lagos to seek a better lot for Nigeria's prostitutes.

Abraham is seeking to ensure that prostitution is legalized in Nigeria and that sex workers be protected and respected. The mother-of-two, who heads the Nigerian chapter of African Sex Workers Alliance (ASWA) and the Women of Power Initiative (WOPI) , led protests with the demonstrators wearing T-shirts screaming "Sex work is work, we need our rights."

She told Al Jazeera:

"We are tired of dying in silence","We want to be able to practise our profession with pride like every other person. We want an end to name-calling and stigmatisation. We are sex workers and not asawo [a derogatory Yoruba name for prostitutes]."

"Sex work is normal work and there are sex workers everywhere under one form of disguise or the other". "The government should stop criminalising our work"

Ms. Abraham also stated that she is proud of her profession as it is not different from any other trade. Controversial musician, Maheeda has also called for the legalization of prostitution in Nigeria.

3  Forum / Politics / Oyinlola Finally Defect to APC on: 5-08-2014 07:45 AM

The estranged National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party and a former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has said that he will defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress in Osogbo today

According to what Punch related when he was contacted on phone, Oyinlola confirmed it and said: “So it is. I am joining the APC.” He will be participating at the mega rally holding at Osogbo today and APC members are really excited knowing fully well how influential he is in the political arena and would be an important tool for the change the party wants.

It is further believed that if Oyinlola defects to the APC as scheduled, then all former governors in the state would be members of the ruling party.

Aregbesola had disclosed recently at a campaign in Iwo that Oyinlola had become a member of the APC.

Aregbesola said, “When the PDP was united as one party, we defeated them. Now the good ones among them have left and are now with us. All former elected governors in the state are now with Aregbesola.

“The first elected governor, Alhaji Isiaka Adeleke, is with us; the second governor, Baba (Bisi) Akande is with us. The third governor Omo’ba (Prince), is also with us. I can say this but they cannot say it.

“But a former deputy governor, who was chased away from office is the one they are banking on to win the election, they are joking.

“Their candidate has never won any election and he cannot win this one. The only election he won was a gift to him from the prince and he did not win but the election was manipulated for him.”
