1  Forum / Politics / Rivers Gov. Wike Frustrated Efforts To Micro-Zone Presidency To South-East – Atiku Spokesman on: 24-09-2022 06:56 AM

The spokesman of the Atiku Campaign Organisation, Daniel Bwala, has accused Governor Nyesom Wike of frustrating efforts by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to micro-zone its presidential ticket to the southeast.

Bwala made the comment on Friday, hours after the Rivers State leader briefed the press where he opened up on the crisis rocking the PDP since its presidential primary election in May.

“The whole gamut of power zoning here or there started with Governor Wike. He virtually had everything he wanted. He brought this chairman (Ayu). When a discussion was being done in the party that power should be zoned, I recall very well, Atiku was inclined that it should be zoned to either southeast or northeast – these are the two geo-political zones that have not benefited,” Bwala said on ChannelsTV.

“Then, he (Wike) said if it was ever zoned to the southeast, he was not going to run. The movement then was that it should be micro-zoned to the southeast – among stakeholders from the region. He (Wike) frustrated it because he was interested.”

He claimed that the move also led to the departure of the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi from the main opposition party.

“He (Wike) influenced the emergence of leaders that sat in committees – whether committees for party positions or elective office. At his behest, a recommendation was made that it should be thrown open evidently because he is not from the southeast,” the spokesman added.

“That led to the departure of Peter Obi. If the zoning thing was followed, Peter Obi or probably the former SGF (Ayim Pius) would have emerged as the presidential candidate of the party.”

Bwala, however, believes that despite the wranglings in the PDP, his principal’s quest to “unify” Nigeria won’t change if elected as president.

“The last politician I can look at and say he is discriminatory is Atiku Abubakar,” he maintained.

3  Forum / Law and Crime / Newborn Twin Stolen From Maternity Ward By Woman Who Poses As Hospital Worker In Bauchi on: 23-09-2022 11:12 PM

A newborn twin was stolen from the maternity ward of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi.
The father of the newborn twins, Ibrahim Dallami Khalid, who spoke to Daily Trust, said his baby was stolen by a woman posing as an official of the hospital.
According to Mr Khalid, the woman had entered the ward where his wife and the twins were on Wednesday, September 21, 2022.
He said the woman told his wife that one of the twins needed treatment at another ward in the hospital, adding that the impostor took the baby away and never returned.
"We suspected a woman disguised as an official entered the room during visiting hours and she greeted all the patients there. I saw the woman but I thought that my wife and her mother knew her," he explained.
"Later when I left the hospital, my wife asked her mother to bring eggs for her. As she tried to get the eggs, the suspicious woman came again and asked my mother-in-law where she was heading to. She responded and went out.
"The woman used the opportunity to sit close to my wife, told her that one of the twins is not well and she wanted to take the baby to the Special Baby Care. My wife allowed her to take the baby. Since then, there is no information on the baby’s whereabouts.”
Khalid said his wife has been unconscious since the incident happened.
The Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of the hospital, Dr. Haruna Liman, described the incident as an unfortunate development.
"We were told that the culprit has established rapport with the patient and her relative who was staying with her and she had closely monitored their movements," he said.
"When the culprit came to pick one of the babies, the mother voluntarily presented the child to her and nobody suspected anything until she raised the alarm that her baby is no where to be found."
Spokesperson of the State Police Command, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, also confirmed the incident, adding that investigation had commenced to arrest the suspect(s).
4  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Men In Russian Are Rushing To Wed Women With Children To Avoid Getting Drafted In The War on: 23-09-2022 11:00 PM

Desperate Russian men are rushing to wed women with children as they frantically try to avoid getting conscripted for Putin's war.
Deadbeat dads who abandoned their children are also attempting to reconnect with their ex-lovers in the hopes that they will be spared being drafted into the war in Ukraine.
Others are reportedly hurrying to sign themselves up as carers for elderly relatives they have previously neglected.
Russian men of fighting age are seeking to exploit loopholes that will stop them from getting sent to the frontline after Putin ordered the partial mobilisation of the country.
Up to 300,000 men may be signed up for the war, while figures of up to one million soldiers by next year have been floated.
Hundreds of thousands are trying to flee Russia, with queues of 24 to 30 hours reported at border crossings with Kazakhstan, Finland, and Georgia.
Thousands of protesters expressing outrage at the conscription order have been arrested in Russia.
But there have been reports that some of the detained activists have been handed their conscription papers at the police station and rushed to the frontline anyway.
SibReal media reported that marriage register offices were "packed" in the Buryatia republic in eastern Russia as men try to hurriedly marry single mothers to avoid being sent to the war front.
One woman said: "Me and my men went first to Ulan-Ude, but the queue was far too long."
She added: "Everyone is getting married or applying to establish fatherhood, and children are getting registered to their fathers."
A journalist based in Tomsk said: "So instead of running away or protesting [about the war mobilisation] they are registering marriages…
"Words fail me."
Buryatia has seen the highest numbers of recruits to Putin's war, and university students in Ulan-Ude were filmed being frogmarched by police from their lecture theatres to a conscription office.
Another woman from Moscow said her friend, a single mum of five, was proposed to by one desperate man to avoid being conscripted.
"She laughed so hard when she told me about it, and said looks like she will be super popular in the near future," she said.
"It seems men with three or more children will not be mobilised."
Some women may have selfish reasons for wanting to get married as well.
Wives qualify for compensation if their husbands are killed in the war, unmarried partners do not.
Olga, 22, said she had a shotgun wedding to her long-term boyfriend on Thursday.
"If something happens [to him], there would otherwise have been no way to prove I was his partner and the child was his," she explained.
"Of course, I would have loved a big wedding, with our families celebrating, but I was so scared my husband would be taken [to the front] before we tied the knot that we decided to rush.
"They haven’t knocked at our door yet, only to our neighbours, but I fear it is only a matter of time."
5  Forum / Law and Crime / Nigerian Man Who Swallowed £80k Worth Of Cocaine Nabbed At UK Airport Posing As Liverpool Fan on: 23-09-2022 10:52 PM

A Nigerian man, Benjamin Nwaogwugwu, who swallowed 79 packages of cocaine totalling a kilo worth £80,000, has been caught while pretending to be a Liverpool fan at Manchester airport, the United Kingdom (UK).
According to Daily Mail, the illicit drug was consumed by Nwaogwugwu, who claimed to have been hired by Colombian drug barons, at a hotel in South America before he flew to Paris and then returned to the UK.

The 43-year-old was said to have pretended to be a Liverpool fan returning to the UK after watching the UEFA Champions League final — which held on May 28, 2022 in Paris — when police saw him grimacing in pain at the airport.

It took two days for him to pass out the drugs from his bowels, and after analysis, it was discovered that the cocaine has a “purity of up to 89%” after an examination was done on 19 packages.

According to the report, Nwaogwugwu, said to be married with three children, said some persons threatened to harm his family members in Nigeria if he didn’t transport the drugs.
“The defendant was told if he did not do this, he and his family would be harmed and was threatened. There was a total of 100 packages but the defendant could only swallow 79 and was vomiting blood so had to stop. He was taken to the airport and flown back to France, then onto Manchester,” a statement detailing his plea reads.

“The defendant was under significant pressure to commit this offence but accepts this was not duress. The defendant did not stand to profit financially from this activity.”

He was arrested on June 1, 2022, and jailed for four years and two months after he pleaded guilty to cocaine importation.

Tina Landale, the presiding judge, reportedly said despite Nwaogwugwu’s “clean” record, measures must be taken to “prevent criminals from taking on these types of crimes”.
“You became involved in an enterprise where you attempted to bring cocaine into Manchester,” the judge was quoted as saying.

“You cooperated with it and then you tried to lie your way out of it. Drug smuggling is a vile, vile trade and it’s clear that these criminals prey on the vulnerable and you were exploited.

“Up to now, you had been making a positive contribution to the community and it is clear you are a man of good character and that you care for your family. However, this is an extremely serious offence and there must be a deterrence to prevent criminals from taking on these types of crimes.”

8  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / ASUU Strike: Federal Government Tells Lecturers To Obey Court Ruling First on: 23-09-2022 10:16 PM

The federal government has told the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to obey the National Industrial Court ruling and call off its seven-month strike.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, gave the advice while fielding questions from journalists on the margins of the 77th United Nations General Assembly, UNGA, and the Official Launch of the Nigeria Integrated National Financing Framework Report (NIFF).

The industrial court on Wednesday, ordered ASUU to call off its ongoing nationwide strike, pending the determination of a suit filed by the Federal Government.

The federal government had dragged the lecturers to court in a bid to end the strike.

“I’m not ASUU but the maximum in law is that when there is a court judgment or ruling or order you must first obey and then we can apply for an appeal if you so desire or apply for stay that is stay of execution.

“So the maximum in law, jurisprudence and everything about the law, is that you obey the court’s ruling, judgment or order, no matter how bad. The qualifying thing is that no matter how bad and no matter how you disagree with it, you first obey. Like the military people say, obey before complain.

“So we expect them to get back to the classrooms but that doesn’t foreclose negotiations, the negotiations should be on as a matter of fact, it will be on officially and non officially.

“For example, the House of Representatives had invited us to come and brief them. And together, they are stakeholders. You heard Mr President said to the committee of Pro-Chancellors when they visited him, that he would do consultation as per the two request on putting an icing on the cake on the government offer to ASUU members and the issue of resettlement fund to cushion the effect of the “no work no pay” situation they found themselves in.

“So, President will look at it, the House of Reps are stakeholders, Ministers we are not only stakeholders, we are advisers to Mr. President by the provisions of the Constitution, Section 5 of the Constitution and 147, that appoints ministers one from each state of the Federation, and we hold regular meetings with him, so we are his chief advisers.

“So, we will interface with the House of Representatives and all of us collectively will advise Mr. President,” Ngige said.
9  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Chinese Citizen, Geng Quanrong Accussed Of Murder, Will Be Served Chinese Food In Prison - NCS on: 23-09-2022 10:10 PM

Geng Quanrong, the man accused of killing Ummu Buhari (Ummita), will be served Chinese meals.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) made the confirmation as his trial gets underway.

Kano Correctional Centre spokesman, Musbahu Kofar-Nassarawa said Quanrong was not expected to eat ‘gabza’, a meal for prisoners.

The Public Relations Officer said the law provides that a foreigner in Nigerian prison custody should be fed with his native food.

Kofar-Nasarawa added that the law allows such inmates to contact their country’s embassy or relatives for assistance.

“People are asking which type of food the suspect is going to be eating.

“He is going to be served Chinese food, that is what law provides”, Daily Nigerian quoted him saying.

Quanrong was charged to court on Wednesday but his plea was not taken due to lack of jurisdiction.

Magistrate Hanif Sanusi adjourned the homicide case to October 13 to enable the state to make necessary preparations.
10  Forum / The Buzz Central / Very Insensitive – BBNaija Cross Slams Aisha Buhari For Posting Photos Of Zahra's Graduation on: 23-09-2022 10:00 PM

Reality TV star, Cross Okonkwo, has berated Nigeria’s first lady, Aisha Buhari, over a social media post celebrating her daughter-in-law’s graduation from a UK university.

Aisha Buhari had taken to her Instagram page to celebrate her daughter-in-law, who graduated with first class honours in Architectural Science from Coventry University, United Kingdom.
The first lady posted a photo of herself, her son, Yusuf, and his wife, Zahra, and captioned it,
Congratulations to Mrs Zahra B. Buhari on your graduation with First Class Honors in Architectural Science. Wishing you all the best.”

Aisha’s post, however, didn’t sit well with a number of Nigerians who tagged it as insensitive.
Former Big Brother Naija season 6 housemate, Cross, also took to his Twitter handle to lampoon the wife of the president for the post.

He emphasized that she’s a mother to the citizens of Nigeria, and since public university students are currently out of school, celebrating her in-law’s graduation would feel like she’s rubbing it in the faces of Nigerian students affected by the prolonged strike.

“To me this is very insensitive ma. Your the mother of the nation and over 92% of ur children are not going to school atm and just because one of ur biological child finished from school. Which is kool and what not. But don’t come online and rub it in on your other children face.

It’s not kool and it’s very sad to me. All the children in Nigeria should be celebrated like the way you celebrate your daughter. I’m lucky cuz my mum did her best to send me to skool. What about those that don’t have mothers. You are to be their mother .Mother of the nation”. He wrote.

13  Forum / Technology / NCC Offers Advice As It Reveals New Ways Attackers Exploit Zoom on: 22-09-2022 10:08 PM

The Nigerian Communications Commission’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT) has advised users of videotelephony platform, Zoom, to install the latest update of the software from its publisher’s official website following the discovery of vulnerabilities that allows a remote attacker to exploit the app.

In an advisory issued on Wednesday, NCC-CSIRT reported that the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) found several flaws in the Zoom product.

The videotelephony platform became popular for virtual meetings in the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic with more than 300 million daily users.

According to the NCC-CSIRT advisory, “A remote attacker could exploit the vulnerabilities to circumvent implemented security measures and cause a denial of service on the targeted machine.”

It noted that “These vulnerabilities exist owing to incorrect access control implementation in Zoom On-Premises Meeting Connector MMR prior to version 4.8.20220815.130.

“A remote attacker could exploit these flaws to join a meeting they were not permitted to attend without being seen by the other attendees.

“They can also access audio and video feeds from meetings they were not permitted to attend, as well as interrupt other sessions.”

Successful exploit of these vulnerabilities could allow an unauthorized remote authenticated user to bypass implemented security limitations on the targeted system.

The Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) is the telecom sector’s cyber security incidence centre set up by the NCC to focus on incidents in the telecom sector and as they may affect telecom consumers and citizens at large.

The CSIRT also works collaboratively with the Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT), established by the Federal Government to reduce the volume of future computer risks incidents by preparing, protecting, and securing Nigerian cyberspace to forestall attacks, and problems or related events.
14  Forum / Politics / Ekiti State Gov., Fayemi Bows Out As NGF Chairman, Lauds Osinbajo For Leadership Skills on: 22-09-2022 09:49 PM

Outgoing governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, who doubles as Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) on Thursday attended his last meeting, where he spoke glowingly of the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.

He described Osinbajo who also doubles as Chairman of the National Economic Council (NEC) of exemplary leadership, especially in galvanizing ideas from governors across the federation to foster development.

Fortunately, the meeting was the 127th NEC, and it was held virtually with State Governors, some Deputy Governors and key federal ministers in attendance.

According to Dr. Fayemi, having served in previous NEC and longer than most current members, he can affirm that the VP’s leadership has been outstanding, adding that the Council has never had the kind of leadership that Prof. Osinbajo has provided.

He said he was optimistic that such leadership of NEC would be maintained going forward.

The Vice President also returned the commendation from the outgoing Ekiti State Governor.

On behalf of the NEC, the VP also praised Governor Fayemi especially in his role as Chair of the NGF and noted his “informed and patriotic contributions” to the work of the NEC.

The Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Moses Frank Ekpo, also commended the VP’s leadership of the Council and paid tributes also to the outgoing NGF Chairman for leading the Forum so ably. He also thanked the outgoing Council Secretary for a job well done.

The Vice President agreed with him that, indeed, the NEC & NGF are ensuring that the country moves as a nation even more towards a true federation, not just in words but in action.

Meanwhile, the NEC meeting deliberated on the flood disasters prevalent in some states, where they also adopted strategies to step up service delivery in the grassroots and how the flood can be mitigated.

Other deliberations also centred on the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control(NCDC) in relation to COVID-19 and emerging cases of monkeypox.

On Covid-19, experts maintained that the global caseload has remained stable, noting that the high burden of cases in 2021 is comparable to 2022 so far.

Officials of the NCDC equally asserted that the test positivity rate in Nigeria was in the threshold of 16.9% as at 36th week, with no death in the past week, while 6 states returned no testing at all.

The agency, however, noted that trends indicate that COVID-19 cases have increased by 3% across the states & FCT. And that the COVID-19 pandemic is not fully over.

As a way of advisory, the NCDC urged states to commit more testing, including routine testing and frequent testing for health workers, while Private health institutions be encouraged to do more testing.

“Council noted that the NSIA (Establishment) Act, 2011 provides that all appointments of individuals into the Board of Directors “shall be made by the President on the recommendations of the Minister of Finance, who shall consult with the National Economic Council (NEC).”

“Council was also called to note that following the notification of the expiration of the tenures of the Managing Director/Chief Executive Directors, the Honorable Minister constituted the Executive Nomination Committee (ENC) to fill the vacant positions;

“Council then noted that the outgoing Managing Director/Chief Executive officer will expire on the 30th September, 2022,” a statement summarising the presentations at NEC by Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the VP noted.

Meanwhile, Minister of Finance and National Planning, Zaniab Ahmed presented the outcome of the search to fill the positions of NSIA MD/CEO and 2 Executive Directors which are becoming vacant with the expiration of the terms of the current holders.

The names of the nominees were presented, and NEC gave its endorsement to the President for his approval.
15  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Minister Of Labour, DG Budget Office, AGF, SGF, Others To Appear Before Reps Over ASUU Strike on: 22-09-2022 09:45 PM

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila, has invited the Minister of Labour and productivity Chris Ngige, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Head of Civil service of the Federation, Accountant General of the Federation, Director General, Salaries, Income And Wages Commission, Director General Budget Office, among others to appear before the lawmakers next week Thursday.

The Speaker disclosed this on Thursday at the resumed fact finding meeting on strike embarked upon by ASUU.

In continuation of the efforts to find solutions to the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Speaker of the House of Representatives alongside his deputy Rep. Ahmed Idris Wase and other leaders of the House on Thursday met with the Head of Service of the Federation (HoS), Mrs Folashade Yemi-Esan, the chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Mr. Ekpo Nta, among other government officials.

The meeting was a follow up to an earlier one the Speaker held with ASUU officials on Tuesday, where issues related to the strike were discussed.

The outcome of Tuesday’s meeting led the House leadership to invite the Head of Service, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, the Accountant General of the Federation, among others.

At Thursday’s meeting, NITDA told the House leadership that the Integrated Payroll Personnel Information System (IPPIS), the University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) and the University Peculiar Personnel and Payroll System (U3PS) failed its integrity tests regarding the university payroll, which the agency conducted between March and JUNE this year.

A NITDA official at the meeting told the House leadership that the government directed the agency to test UTAS in October, 2020, and that the platform failed the two integrity tests conducted on it.

He said following the first test, ASUU was asked to go back and review, which it did. Yet, the platform did not meet NITDA’s requirements the second time.

For the third time, NITDA was then asked to conduct tests on UTAS, IPPIS and U3PS, which the official said all the three platforms failed its requirements regarding the payroll system of universities.

Not satisfied with the explanation, Speaker Gbajabiamila asked if NITDA advised the government to take action on the lapses found on IPPIS, which has been in operation by the government since 2011. But the NITDA official said they were not in a position to do that.

Gbajabiamila also asked if NITDA queried the IPPIS platform, to which the official responded in the affirmative.

The Deputy Speaker Wase also expressed reservations at NITDA’s action, saying it ought to have advised government on the appropriate action to take in view of its discovery on IPPIS.

However, the Head of Service, in her explanation, said the ministry of communications and digital economy wrote her office following NITDA’s observations about IPPIS on the need to take a holistic look at the platform and that a committee was empaneled to carry out the assignment.

She also noted that IPPIS is not just a payment platform but that it also has a human resource component, which all government agencies have been directed to activate, noting that all those directly under her purview have since complied.

Also, the chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Mr Nta, told the House leadership that in view of the general agitation in the tertiary education sector, the agency advised the government to look at the possibility of increasing the salaries of the staff in the entire sector, comprising universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

He said, however, that at the end of the day, the government decided to increase the salaries of lecturers in the universities by a certain percentage, while professors were considered for a higher percentage.

He said he was not aware of any agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU for salary increment.

Also speaking at the meeting, the acting Accountant General of the Federation, Mr. Sylva Okolieaboh, said under no circumstance should employees dictate to their employers how they should be paid, faulting ASUU’s insistence on UTAS.

After hours of deliberations, the Speaker suggested that a further follow-up meeting with ASUU officials be held on Thursday next week, which the stakeholders subscribed to. The meeting was, therefore, adjourned to Thursday next week.
16  Forum / Politics / It'll Be Morally Right For Ayu To Resign - Bode George Reveals Ayu Is Declining On His Promise on: 22-09-2022 09:27 PM

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bode George, has insisted that Senator Iyorchia Ayu resigns as the party’s national chairman.
He stated that while nobody was pressuring Ayu to vacate the office, it was a pledge the national chairman freely made in the build-up to the party’s presidential primary election.

“Let me try and educate the public on this issue; we are not talking about removing him (Ayu) or forcing him (to resign), he himself – Iyorcha Ayu – stated pointedly that peradventure if the presidential candidate emerges from the North [I didn’t say it, he said it publicly] that he would resign,” said George who was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday.

He explained that it would only be morally right for the national chairman to resign from his position after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the northern extraction emerged as the PDP presidential candidate.

George, who is also a member of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), explained that Ayu’s resignation was necessary to ensure the inclusivity, sensitivity, and balancing that the party’s founding fathers envisaged when the PDP was created.

President Muhammadu Buhari, according to him, is from the North and in his eighth year and it will not be proper for another northerner to succeed him, irrespective of his/her political affiliation.

“The issue we are talking about is a purely moral issue …if we use the same moral compass to allow him (Atiku) to contest at that time (because he is from the North and chairmanship had been zoned there), it means the presidential candidate must come from the opposite zone, which is the South.

“Now that you (Atiku) took up the ticket, Ayu himself stated completely that once the presidential candidate emerges from the North, he himself would be too happy to resign. So, why are we playing games?” the PDP chieftain queried.

19  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Putin Won't Win In Ukraine - NATO Weighs In On Russia-Ukraine War on: 22-09-2022 06:08 AM

Russian President, Vladimir Putin will not win the war in Ukraine despite his new order to mobilize thousands of extra troops, transatlantic military alliance, NATO has said.
In an address to Russians on Wednesday, September 21, Putin announced he would call up 300,000 reservists to fight in Ukraine and backed a plan to annex parts of the country, telling the West he was prepared to use nuclear weapons to defend Russia.
"If the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will use all available means to protect our people - this is not a bluff," Putin said.
Russia possesses "lots of weapons to reply," Putin added.
Responding to Putin's threats, Jens Stoltenberg, NATO's secretary general,
said the Russian leader's threat to use nuclear weapons was "dangerous and reckless rhetoric."
Stoltenberg, speaking to Reuters Editor in Chief Alessandra Galloni in New York, said that Russia's first mobilization since World War Two would escalate the conflict and cost more lives including Russians and Ukranians.
He said the move was evidence that Putin had miscalculated since the Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine.
He said NATO, the 30-nation Western defense alliance will stay calm and "not engage in that same kind of reckless and dangerous nuclear rhetoric as President Putin."
"The speech of President Putin demonstrates that the war is not going according to President Putin's plans. He has made a big miscalculation," Stoltenberg said.
"More troops will escalate the conflict. That will mean more suffering, more loss of lives - Ukrainian lives, but also Russian lives," Stoltenberg added.
Stoltenberg said that although Russian troops were ill-equipped and lacked proper command and control, it was hard to foresee the wat ending soon.
He said as long as Russia does not accept that Ukraine is a sovereign, independent nation.
"The only way to end this war is to prove that President Putin will not win on the battlefield. When he realizes that, he has to sit down and negotiate a reasonable agreement with Ukraine," said Stoltenberg.
Stoltenberg added that members of the alliance have provided unprecedented support to Ukraine and that the NATO allies now need to replenish their stocks of weapons and ammunition.
As NATO was prepared for a "long haul" in dealing with Putin, it was now in close dialogue with the defense industry to build back its stocks of materiel, Stoltenberg said.
