The National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) has called on the Federal Government and the government of Ogun State to, as a matter of urgency, deploy health officers with testing kits to the ports of entry into Nigeria from Benin Republic.

The health officers, they said, would help to test people entering into Nigeria from the neighbouring country so as to prevent the spread of Coronavirus pandemic.

NAOSS, in a statement by its National President, Gbemileke Ogunronbi, on Friday, said the call was necessitated by the report of the first case of Coronavirus outbreak in Benin Republic.

It was reported that Ogun has multiple entries that link Nigeria to Benin Republic.

The students body insisted that there was a need for the State government to be on the alert as a result of its closeness to Benin.

NAOSS, in order to prevent a major health crisis in the State, urged the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, to urgently place hospitals and health centres in border areas on the alert, asking officials to be on the look out for patients with symptoms of Covid-19.

Likewise, the Ogun students called on the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to man the land borders in the state without taking chances, while praying traditional rulers and leaders of these communities to assist government by reporting anyone with suspected Coronavirus symptoms.

A group of Kenyan youths have stoned a man to death because they suspected he had the Wuhan coronavirus.

The man identified as George Kotini Hezron, was on his way home from a drinking spree in the village of Msambweni in Kwale County when he was attacked on Wednesday at around 9 pm.

The residents had suspected him of having coronavirus and then attacked him by throwing stones at him before fleeing the scene, according to local media.

“Kotini met a group of youths and an argument ensued as the youths took advantage of his drunkenness and started accusing him of suffering from coronavirus.”

The Sub-County police boss also disclosed that no arrest has been made but they have launched an investigation.

“No arrests have been made but we have launched investigations into the matter,” he said.

13588  Forum / Politics / Senate Okay Bill To Make Election Debate Compulsory For Presidential, Governorship Candidates on: 20-03-2020 06:39 AM

The Nigerian senate has endorsed a bill to make election debates compulsory for presidential and governorship candidates.

The bill sponsored by Abdulfatai Buhari who represents Oyo north scaled its second reading at Thursday’s plenary session after senators voted in its favour.

If passed into the law, the bill mandates the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organise mandatory debates for the candidates to “help boost and strengthen the electoral process.”

It is also expected that the bill will help in the assessment of candidates and improve Nigeria’s electoral process.

Sponsor of the bill, Buhari said;

Quote
“Voters learn from the debate and are more accurately able to judge candidates and get additional information about them.

“It also helps the candidates to speak on a wide range of issues as the national assembly is doing with ministerial nominees.

“If the ministers can be assessed, it is logically imperative for the president and others to be adequately assessed also.”

It will be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari shied away from the debates in 2019, prompting his main challenger, Atiku Abubakar to also opt out.

"Christian movies and Nollywood have totally different motives, missions and Visions. You cant mix them, it is like Basketball and football they are all balls but you know it is not isolation when you dont allow a basket baller to be your defender because he is tall and strong. Nollywood are entertainers, Christian Movies are to win souls, entertainers can't win souls because their souls need to be Won first.
It is not about isolation it is about using those God has prepared to do His work. We are not talking about impact here, we are talking about Gospel, evangelism, we are talking about getting people back to their maker, their Lord. Nollywood celebrities cant do that, only already blood washed Ministers on the screen can do that. If your motive is to shoot movies that make people laugh and sexier, Nollywood will do the Job. But our motive are souls, then dont ever think of bringing them into Christian movies. They tried it before it failed, it wont work forever because God will defend His name. The Church made that mistakes before bringing Comedian on the Pulpit, I think they've come to their senses now."
13590  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Islamic Group Delighted As Yoruba Youths Kick Against Operation Amotekun on: 19-03-2020 08:57 AM

An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has lauded youths who recently protested against Operation Amotekun.

It was reported recently that youths, under the aegis of the Yoruba Appraisal Group (YAG) led by Chief Oloketuyi Joshua, organized a massive rally and commenced their procession from Women Development Centre in Agege down to Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.

The rally took place on Thursday, 12th March, 2020.

MURIC’s endorsement of the protest was expressed in a press statement issued to DAILY POST on Thursday, by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

He said, “It is very clear now that the Amotekun initiative has been hijacked by ethnic jingoists. The protest by the Yoruba Appraisal Group (YAG) has exposed the tribal charlatans and ethnic demagogues in Yorubaland.

“It is now very clear that those camouflaging as lovers of Yorubaland are only after their personal gains. They pander to the passion of innocent Yorubas. Not only that, they are pursuing a balkanisation agenda. They neither love Yorubaland nor Nigeria.

“Only a fool will oppose the reform of Nigeria’s security architecture in view of several lapses. But breaking up the country is not the solution. Some looters among the Yoruba who are facing prosecution in the law courts are behind the incitement of the Yoruba against the Federal Government (FG).

“They want to cause confusion before the long arm of the law can reach them. They believe that the only escape route for them is for the Yoruba enclave to be expunged from the Nigerian entity after which they can no longer be prosecuted.

“This is why they are aggressively promoting non-existent ideologies of fulanisation and Islamisation. We contend that these are sheer myth, phantom and ordinary mirage. We appeal to well-meaning Yoruba leaders not to allow these hawks to railroad them into destabilising the country.

“We call on the governors of the South West to be wary of agent provocateur and advocatus diaboli among the major dramatis personae of the Amotekun initiative. Security is good but not when some have hidden agenda against a section of the country, a particular religion and certain individuals.

“Exempli gratia, the former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, threatened in one of his notorious tweets that they knew where to keep people like Akintola when the Oduduwa project is completed. We believe he was referring to Muslim leaders in Yorubaland who dare to promote Islam and not Akintola alone. Another yet to be identified Amotekun enthusiast called for the assassination of the same Akintola.

“Again, A Yoruba group, the Apapo Oodua Koya (AOKOYA), told the former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who is currently in Lagos, to go back to the North. These threats have not been withdrawn and nobody has been arrested. What is most worrisome is the silence of Yoruba leaders in the face of these threats.

“It is therefore evident that certain extremist groups and individuals nurse diabolical ideas which they intend to actualise via Amotekun and the more the governors look, the less they see. It is unfortunate that the governors of the sub-region have danced to the gallery in the euphoria of regionalism.

“We corroborate the fear of last week’s protesters (YAG) who alleged that Amotekun is an instrument to perpetrate crime and make political gains for a few individuals masquerading as having the love of the people of the region at heart. We add that Amotekun is seen by some kleptomaniacs as a means of escaping justice having colluded with other thieves from other regions to steal Nigeria dry.

“It is not too late however. Early changes will save Yorubaland from the clutches of ethnic demagogues. We therefore call for a review of the security initiative before recruitments begin. In particular, we advise against the appointment of die-hard Yoruba nationalists and activists in the top echelons of the security outfit.

“This class of people will only bring prejudice against particular tribes into the system. We insist that real professionals like retired army and police officers should be allowed to handle the recruitments as well as post-recruitment command centres.

“In conclusion, we join the Yoruba Appraisal Group (YAG) in calling upon FG and the Inspector General of Police to exercise caution over the request of the Amotekun camp for arms. There is need for FG to sample the opinion of Muslim leaders in the region.

“As for now, Amotekun has become the sword of Damocles hanging over the heads of innocent citizens residing in the South West and critics of Amotekun are being labelled traitors and threatened with death.

“There is every reason to believe that Amotekun may become a real terror in the land, worse than kidnappers and robbers. Therefore, a gun-brandishing amotekun may be the last nail in the coffin of a united Nigeria.”

13592  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Coronavirus: Don't Shut Down Mosques, Muslims Are Immune - Scholar, Dr. Abubakr Warns Buhari on: 18-03-2020 09:45 PM

A renowned Islamic Scholar Dr. ,Abubakr Imam Aliagan, has warned the President Muhammadu Buhari government, the Sultanate Council and Muslim authorities, not to shut down mosques in Nigeria over coronavirus.

Aliagan is a Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN).

He spoke on Wednesday while reacting to the suspension of congregational prayers at Saudi Arabia.

Saudi had on Tuesday stopped the performance of the customary five daily prayers and the weekly Jumuat (Friday) prayer at other worship centres excluding the two holy mosques in Makkah and Madina.

But Aliagan told PRNigeria that Nigerian Muslim males should be allowed to observe their compulsory prayers in mosques.

He claimed that Muslims have already been endowed with a natural immune system to fight coronavirus.

Aliagan stated that health officials advise people to wash their hands which Muslims do five times daily before observing their obligatory prayers.

“Again, our sisters are always adorned in Hijab, some even use Niqab and gloves. So, we the Muslims already have a potent immune system against coronavirus. That is to say that we don’t have any problem.

“Even in France, I learnt that those that are completely free from contacting coronavirus are Muslim ladies and women who cover their face, use hand gloves and don’t shake hands with people,” he said.

The cleric, who is also an Imam of a Jumuat (congregation) Mosque, noted that the action of the Saudi Government is in line with Islamic teachings on preventing the spread of an epidemic in any area.

He said the Holy Prophet specifically mentioned that if there is an epidemic at a certain location, people should not go close to that danger area or place.

“While those that are living there should not come out until the epidemic is wiped out. The prophet, by implication is saying we should avoid the spread of epidemics with necessary precautionary steps.”

Aliagan argued that the Saudi authorities’ directive is only aimed at forestalling the wildfire spread of the disease.

“I don’t think the Muslim Ummah and its authorities in Nigeria should toe the line of Saudi by banning congregational prayers in mosques.

“The situation in our country is quite different from what we have in the Arab world or even at some western countries. The killer scourge easily ravages their immune system and body. However, I am still saying we should go along with what the Prophet counselled.

“Which is that we should not take epidemics or any killer disease for granted. We should take all necessary precautions. Any advice from health officials should strongly be adhered to and abided by,” Dr. Aliagan added.

The National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for approving a reduction in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as petrol from N145 to N125 per litre.

This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by his Chief Press Secretary, Simon Ebegbulem.
It quoted him to have described the President’s decision as “a product of a progressive mind driving the machinery of a responsive, responsible and compassionate government.” The statement reads: “On behalf of the National Working Committee of our great party, the APC, I commend our dear President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, on his decision, which received the approval of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), to reduce the pump price of petrol from N145 to N125 per litre. “This clearly shows how progressive-minded the APC administration under President Muhammadu Buhari’s leadership is. “It is also indicative of how compassionate the administration is in the desire and effort to align with the current global economic realities foisted on us by the fall in crude oil prices. “Without a doubt, it is also, very largely, a measure of the administration’s responsiveness to the need for accountability in public finance management and openness in governance.” Oshiomhole noted that since there is a crash in global crude oil prices, the APC-led Federal Government ensured that it did not toe the path of some previous administrations by not responding to the obvious direct effects of the crash.

He blasted that it would be the eternal credit of the APC-led Federal Government on the watch of Buhari that the unprecedented decision was taken to ensure that Nigerians benefit from the reduction in the price of Premium Motor Spirit. “We doff our hat to all members of the President’s team in the FEC for thinking this decision through and quickly announcing it to palliate the burden that the crash would have had on Nigerians if this decision had not been taken to reduce fuel pump price to N125.

UK may already have 55,000 coronavirus cases, the government's chief scientific advisor declared today.
Sir Patrick Vallance said the figure was a "reasonable ballpark" despite just over 1,500 COVID-19 cases being confirmed through testing. .

He added "the hope is we can get it down to" around 20,000 deaths, from a previous prediction of 250,000, by using stringent measures to keep people at home.Sir Patrick said annual excess deaths from seasonal flu were around 8,000. He added: "If we can get this down to numbers 20,000 and below, that's a good outcome in terms of where we would hope to get to with this outbreak. .

But that's still horrible. That's still an enormous number of deaths and it's an enormous pressure on the health service.
"Having spent 20 years as an NHS consultant as well as an academic, I know exactly what that looks and feels like."
