Police Public Relations officer, Rae Hamoonga, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday, April 4, said that Mr. Ilishebo strangled Valerie with an electric power adapter cable and stabbed her in the stomach with a knife.
 
“Yesterday, Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at approximately 16:05 hours, Chelston Police Station, through Ndeke-vorna Police Post, received a distressing report from Alice Mapulanga, 38, that Mr. Ilishebo has perpetrated a heinous act against his wife, Valerie, aged 35,” he said.
 
"Upon the arrival of Police Scenes of Crime officers at the scene, Ms. Franco's lifeless body was discovered lying in the bedroom adjacent to the bed, with a knife embedded in her abdomen
 
“Meanwhile, Mr Ilishebo was found deceased in the sitting room, with a black substance coming from his mouth
 
“It's alleged that Mr Ilishebo strangled Ms Franco using an electric power adapter cable and subsequently stabbed her in the stomach with a knife, before taking a poisonous substance, resulting in his own demise.”
 
Mr. Hamoonga stated that the incident is said to have occurred between 15:00 and 16:00 hours.
 
"The bodies were transported to the University Teaching Hospital mortuary for further examination.”
 
Hamoonga said the motive behind the incident appears to stem from long marital dispute between the couple who shared an eight-month-old child.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a manhunt for a Bulawayo teen who mischievously sprinkled Viagra in a church water tank during a service.
The suspect has been identified as 18-year-old Tracy Sibanda, and he reportedly carried this out at the Church of International Disciples in Thorngrove, Bulawayo, during the easter celebration.
It was gathered that the wild idea came to her mind and she decided to follow through with it. Social media users have expressed mixed sentiments to the teenager suspected to have laced church water with Viagra.

One of the escorts attached to an Abuja-bound train lost his life during a trip, on Thursday morning, April 4. 2024.
A passenger, who witnessed the incident, told Daily Trust that when the train left Kaduna, there was no sign that the deceased was unwell.
The witness said the late officer later complained of chest pain and sought help before he died.
“A police officer, who was one of the escorts on a Abuja-Kaduna train just died. He left home in good health. But later during the journey, he complained of chest pain and asked his colleague to get him some glucose and water,” the source said.
"There was no emergency medical care on the train. Before a doctor, who was also a passenger, could come, the officer was already dead,” the passenger said.
After the officer died, his remains was moved to a side of the train, while his face was covered.
The train arrived at Kubwa in Abuja around 3:20pm after which passengers disembarked.
Security operatives on ground prevented passengers from recording the incident.
About 20 minutes after the arrival of the train, some police van drove into the station to pick the corpse to a mortuary.

The sum of N25m has been awarded against the office of the Ogun State Commissioner of Police and five others by a High Court of Justice in Ogun State, Abeokuta Judicial Division, over the unlawful arrest and detention of one Sunday Mafe.

According to a judgement obtained on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, signed by Justice E.O. Osinuga on Monday, February 5, 2024, the court held that the detention of Mafe several times by men of the Nigeria Police Force was against his fundamental human rights.


The judge also held that the several detentions of the applicant, Mafe, on December 2 to 5, 2016; December 16 to 20, 2016, and December 23 to 29, 2016, based on a petition that was written by Yomi Nuberu, a lawyer, on behalf of one Chief Sakirudeen Olufowobi, over a civil and land matter for which the police did not have jurisdiction, was without lawful justification, unconstitutional, and unlawful.

The case with suit no. HCJ/150/2017 was between the applicant, Sunday Mafe, and the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State; former Area Commander, Ijebu Ode, Assistant Commissioner of Police Funsho Ajao (retd.); Team Leader Eleweran, Inspector Rotimi; Team Leader Eleweran, Supol Nurudeen Ayinla; Team Leader, Igbeba, Inspector Gbenga Folorunso, and Team Leader, Igbeba, Inspector Wasiu Tijani.

The application was brought by the breach of Section 125A Criminal Code CAP C38 and the breach of the applicant’s fundamental human rights as enshrined in Sections 34 and 45 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

According to the suit filed by Kayode Oshiyemi, Mafe held that he was detained several times by the men of the Nigeria Police Force in December based on a petition that was written by Yomi Nuberu on behalf of Olufowobi.


He also alleged he was accused of having arms and ammunition, but nothing was found in his house, and he was detained despite the same, and that he was accused of collecting the sum of N10.8m from Olufowobi in a civil transaction that had to do with land ownership.

Consequently, Justice Osinuga awarded the sum of N25m to be paid to Mafe as damages for his unlawful detention by the police.

The court also warned the police that their job does not include civil transactions, disputes, contracts, or land disputes.

The judgement read, “Having resolved issues 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 in favour of the claimant/applicant, I hold that the claim of claimant/applicant against the respondents succeeds accordingly, it is ordered:

“The sum of N25,000,000.00 (twenty-five million naira) is hereby awarded for the applicant and against the 1-6 respondents jointly and severally as general and compensatory damages for breach of the applicant’s fundamental rights as enshrined in Sections 34 and 35 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

“An order mandating/compelling the respondents to tender public apology to the applicant for breach of his fundamental rights in writing and in two national newspapers within four months of this judgment, giving three months window to appeal.

“A declaration that the respondents should stop harassing the applicant with threats of further arrest and stop using the machinery of police as a tool for intimidation and oppression of the applicant as it relates to facts disclosed in this suit.”

The Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency, KADSEMA, Usman Mazadu, says at least 289,375 residents have been displaced by bandits across 12 LGAs in Kaduna.

Mazadu announced the figures on Wednesday during the flag-off of the distribution of palliatives at Maraban Kajuru, Kajuru LGA.

He noted that the activities of the bandits affected residents from 551 communities.

According to him, the figures are not just numbers, but statistics “that represent lives, dreams, and the enduring spirit of our people“.

He said 134 communities were affected by the activities of bandits while 26,345 individuals were displaced in Chikun LGA.

“In Birnin Gwari, 84 communities are affected with 70,893 displaced people and in numerous other communities across 12 other local governments,“ he said.

“We are here to initiate a significant undertaking, the flag-off of the distribution of relief materials to our brothers and sisters who have been displaced by the unfortunate events that have befallen some communities in our dear state.”

He said the distribution of the palliatives was a reaffirmation of the seven-point agenda of Uba Sani, the governor of Kaduna.

“Ladies and gentlemen, at this juncture, let us take a moment to reflect on the numbers that have brought us to these crossroads: 551 affected communities and 289,375 displaced persons are recorded across 12 local government areas. Therefore the need for support is critical.

“Our empathetic governor has answered the call and has factored this very important population into his N11.4 billion palliative programme,” he said.

He added that the palliatives will be extended to all the affected communities in the 12 LGAs.

Manufacturers and Organised Labour have kicked against Wednesday’s electricity hike by the Federal Government.

The Bola Tinubu administration has approved 240 per cent hike in the tariff payable by electricity users enjoying a 20-hour power supply.

But manufacturers and Labour have insisted on the electricity subsidy, warning that its removal would send manufacturers out of business and worsen inflation.

The subsidy on electricity has been withdrawn completely from the tariff payable by power consumers in the Band A category, who constitute about 15 per cent of the total number of power users across the country.

The government announced the hike in the electricity bill at a press briefing in Abuja by NERC on Wednesday, adding that those affected would now pay a tariff of N225 per kilowatt-hour, up from the previous rate of N68/kWh, representing about 240 per cent increase. The government declared that the decision took effect from Wednesday (yesterday).

But the organised private sector, Nigeria Labour Congress, as well as the Trade Union Congress, kicked against the hiked tariff for power users, whether it was for those on Band A or not.

They argued that the hike in tariff would send manufacturers out of business, worsen inflation, and stifle small and medium enterprises, adding that no place in Nigeria enjoyed up to 20 hours of power supply daily.

Band A power users are those who get up to 20 hours supply of electricity daily and paid about N68/kWh before the implementation of this latest order by the Federal Government through NERC.

The Vice Chairman of NERC, Musiliu Oseni, told journalists in Abuja that the government could not sustain subsidy on electricity and had to devise ways to cut down the about N2.9tn that would be spent on power subsidy this year.

He explained that customers on Band A represented 15 per cent of the over 12.82 million registered electricity consumers across the country, adding that the commission had also downgraded some customers on this band.

Intelligence sources involved in the Israel-Hamas war have revealed how the Israeli military’s bombing campaign in Gaza used a previously undisclosed AI-powered database that at one stage identified 37,000 potential targets based on their apparent links to Hamas.

The sources disclosed that in addition to the AI system called Lavender, the Israeli military officials permitted large numbers of Palestinian civilians to be killed, particularly during the early weeks and months of the conflict.

The Guardian UK, quoting the sources, said that Israeli intelligence officials have been using machine-learning systems to help identify targets during the six-month war.

“This is unparalleled, in my memory,” said one intelligence officer who used Lavender, adding that they had more faith in a “statistical mechanism” than a grieving soldier.

“Everyone there, including me, lost people on October 7. The machine did it coldly. And that made it easier.”

Another Lavender user added, “I would invest 20 seconds for each target at this stage, and do dozens of them every day. I had zero added-value as a human, apart from being a stamp of approval. It saved a lot of time.”

The newspaper reports that the testimony from the six intelligence officers, all who have been involved in the use of Lavender, was given to the journalist, Yuval Abraham for a report published by the Israeli-Palestinian publication +972 Magazine and the Hebrew-language outlet Local Call.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested Idris Okuneye aka Bobrisky. Confirming his arrest to LIB, the spokesperson of the commission, Dele Oyewale, said Bobrisky was arrested for currency mutilation and abuse of the Naira.

A female staff member of the University of Ilesa has died in a tragic accident which occurred along the Ilesa-Ibodi road on Wednesday.

It was gathered that a container filled with cashew nuts fell off a truck and landed on the car the unidentified female staff of the university was driving.

The accident, which occurred a few metres away from the main gate of the institution, led to panic among passersby who quickly swung into action to rescue the victim.

An eyewitness revealed that the victim had just concluded the day’s work and was headed home when the tragic accident occurred.

A senior staff member of the University of Ilesa, who craved anonymity while recounting the accident said, “The vehicle driven by our colleague was trapped under a container filled with cashew nuts being conveyed by a truck. She is feared dead.”

The accident also caused a significant traffic jam on the busy road as the fallen container and the vehicle involved blocked a part of the road, complicating rescue and recovery efforts.

Meanwhile, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has expressed sorrow and sadness over the tragic death of the unidentified University of Ilesa staff.

Reacting to the incident through a statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke charged all relevant government agencies to follow up on the root cause of the accident and ensure that those responsible were brought to book.

Governor Adeleke, who was briefed about the development said, “authorities must find the owner of the said truck, the circumstances of the accident and the question of search and rescue after the accident.

“I have directed the Commissioner for Transportation to act on the matter, including an immediate visit to the scene of the accident, the University of Ilesa, the family of the deceased, as well as new regulations on the usage of the narrow roads by heavy duty trucks.”
