2  Forum / Politics / APC Will Lose In 2023 If Buhari Allows Free And Fair Elections - Gov Wike on: 1-09-2022 10:58 AM

He added that if Buhari doesn't interfere in the 2023 elections, it meant that the President is serious about leaving an enduring legacy of conducting free and fair elections.

Governor Nyesom Wike of River state has stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will lose the 2023 elections if President Muhammadu Buhari fulfills his pledge not to interfere.

Wike said this on Wednesday, August 31, at the flag-off of construction work of Igwuruta internal roads in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the State, that was performed by Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, the governor of Abia State.

He added that if Buhari doesn't interfere in the 2023 elections, it meant that the President is serious about leaving an enduring legacy of conducting free and fair elections.

Wike said: "I thank Mr. President that he wants to leave a legacy of conducting a free and fair election."

Wike recalled how the APC-led federal government through the immediate past Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, deployed the Nigerian Army to rig the 2019 general elections in Rivers State, but that the people resisted and thwarted their scheme.

He added: "Thank God Mr. President for saying that you will not interfere or intimidate anybody. That means your party has no way to win."

Wike continued: "My problem is INEC, whether they will do what they said they will do. They are making promises now. I don’t know whether they will keep to it. If INEC will keep to the promises that Nigeria will get a better election, I will be so happy. Everybody will see with their eyes; Abuja does not vote. It is the people here that will vote."
3  Forum / Education / FG Insensitive To Plight Of ASUU - Akwa Ibom PDP Chieftain on: 1-09-2022 10:50 AM

He said whatever reason the Federal Government had for not resolving the impasse between it and ASUU for more than five months was irrelevant and unacceptable.

President Muhammadu Buhari has been accused of being insensitive to the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic party in Akwa Ibom State, Mr James Iniama made the accusation.

He said whatever reason the Federal Government had for not resolving the impasse between it and ASUU for more than five months was irrelevant and unacceptable.

Iniama, who contested the governorship position of the state but lost in the primary, said this while fielding questions from newsmen in his residence on Wednesday.

He said ” It’s very very unfortunate. The problem I have is, if you are my friend – my real friend – and we have a disagreement, most likely two of us will not be telling people the actual reason we disagreed.

“So, for the dispute between ASUU and the FG of Nigeria, I don’t think we have heard the truth yet on the issue but whatever, it is irrelevant, and for me, the Federal Government is insensitive.

“Whatever ASUU has done that is right or wrong, as far as I’m concerned, I hold the FG of Nigeria responsible for where our sons and daughter are today. Sitting at home for the fifth month is just not acceptable.”

He said going by the social media posts, the FG must be a joker and unfair to have donated to a research institution in Malaysia, the sum of N610m, adding that the APC-led administration must find it expedient to resolve the strike.

“I was reading yesterday on the social media that this same Federal Government donated to a Research institution in Malaysia, six hundred and ten million naira. For God’s sake, are we jokers? It is very unfair.

“The FG must find it absolutely urgent. They must see it as a duty to our sons and daughters to resolve with ASUU and let our children go back to school. That’s where I stand. We owe them a duty to get them educated.”

The PDP chieftain who spoke on the ongoing Reconciliation Committee set up by the party said he had expected that the committee would be the beginning of the process of re-engineering in the party, but added that he was disappointed that the committee is yet to achieve anything.

He added, “I had expected that the reconciliation committee would be the beginning process of re-engineering the structure of the PDP and the state. I had thought so. The reason I speak in the past tense is that we are drawing closer to the election and I haven’t seen our party engage in an activity that will reassure the people of Akwa Ibom State that they do not need to fret or worry in spite of what the other political partie.

But so far, I haven’t seen us take advantage of that reconciliatory initiative. Yes, the reconciliation committee is made up of eminent Akwa Ibom persons.

“We had that meeting but I want to talk not as a politician, but as a christian politician. I would say that we haven’t yet been reconciled. I’m praying that my party will get organised and deal with issues that are confronting us.”

8  Forum / Politics / ASUU: Peter Obi Tells Buhari Govt How To End Strike on: 31-08-2022 03:24 PM

Obi said the Federal Government should engage ASUU in collaborative negotiations to end the lingering strike.

The Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi has revealed how the Federal Government can end the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

According to Obi, FG should negotiate in good faith.

This was as the LP presidential candidate described the prolonged industrial action as unacceptable.

In a series of tweets, the former Anambra State governor lamented that the strike which commenced on February 14, 2022, has become almost intractable to the disadvantage of Nigerian students.

Obi tweeted: “Our position is that the ASUU strike has lingered for far too long. It is unconscionable, worrisome, and unacceptable that FGN would allow such an industrial action to become almost intractable to the detriment of our students.

“It’s time for FGN to engage in collaborative negotiations with ASUU, and in good faith.”

This is coming at a time ASUU extended its six-month-old strike indefinitely.

ASUU had taken the decision during its latest National Executive Council, NEC, meeting in Abuja.
9  Forum / Education / We Don’t Need Your Support In Our Struggle – ASUU President Fires At NANS on: 31-08-2022 03:20 PM

Reacting to the comment by the students’ leadership while speaking in an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Osodeke said students who have been kept at home because of the industrial action had not supported the union’s struggle.

President of the Academic Union of Universities (ASUU) has lashed out at the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) president, Sunday Asefon.

Professor Emmanuel Osodeke stated that the union did not ask for students’ help before it embarked on a strike.

This comes after Asefon had said that students would no longer support the union’s call for intervention.

He accused the ASUU body of being self-serving.

Reacting to the comment by the students’ leadership while speaking in an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Osodeke said students who have been kept at home because of the industrial action had not supported the union’s struggle.

According to him, “Any day students and parents take over this struggle, ASUU body will not have this problem. Had they supported any of our struggles apart from going from one office to another? So leave that alone. Go and ask students in the street, not those leaders.

“What are we saying? Are our universities good? The public primary and secondary schools are dead but the teachers didn’t fight. As I speak with you, even with what we have now, we still have 99% of students in public universities because of our struggle. And students will say ‘we are not supporting you.’ Did we ask for your support when we started this struggle?”

He said, “One, the government should tell Nigerians and us that the money alleged to have been approved for revitalization. How much is it and where is it lodged, and when will it be released?

“Two, UTAS as means of paying salary, have they approved that?u Three, have they accepted the agreement we reached with their panel? They should come and tell us this not just going to press.”

ASUU had been on strike for over five months, with students and parents calling for the government to reach an agreement with the union so schools would resume urgently.
10  Forum / Politics / I Won’t Interfere In Next Year’s Polls - Buhari Tells Nigerians on: 31-08-2022 03:15 PM

He said those in government and other highly privileged citizens would not be allowed to humiliate the electorate.

Nigeria's number one man, President Muhammadu Buhari has talked about the 2023 elections.

The President, yesterday said that his administration will not permit the intimidation of voters during next year’s elections.

He said those in government and other highly privileged citizens would not be allowed to humiliate the electorate.

President Buhari assured that his administration will guarantee a conducive atmosphere during the polls when members of the Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF), led by its chairman, Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu, visited him at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Also yesterday, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said concrete steps should be taken to tackle some national crises, particularly the worsening economic downturn and the protracted strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

President Buhari, according to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, assured Nigerians that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will continue to protect their electoral rights through non-interference at polls, citing the outcomes of elections in Ekiti, Anambra and Osun states as indicators.

The president said the non-interference in elections gives credence to the political process, ensures participation and inclusiveness, and shows that the governing party respects the electorate.

He said APC, under his leadership, will continue to respect Nigerians by ensuring that their votes count and the people’s voice matters in choosing political leaders at different levels.

President Buhari said: “I want Nigerians to know that we respect them, and for us to show that we will allow them to vote who they want. We all witnessed what happened in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun States. What happened in those states gives me a lot of hope that we are succeeding.”

For the 2023 elections, President Buhari said the government will also ensure that Nigerians do not get intimidated.

“We will not allow anyone to use personal resources or their influence to intimidate other Nigerians. We will not allow intimidation materially, morally or physically. This is the kind of leadership that can emerge and consolidate our nation.

“In six months, Nigerians will appreciate the government of APC that we are sincere and we respect them,’’ he added.

President Buhari urged the party’s political leaders to intensify efforts in “thinking, meeting and strategising for the 2023 elections.’’

Bagudu thanked the President for his leadership, wisdom and foresight, affirming that the economy had been growing despite challenges.

He said: “We want to congratulate you on the positive trajectory of the economy, with the 3.5 per cent growth in the second quarter, up from 3.1 per cent of the first quarter of this year. Infrastructure projects are ongoing in parts of the country, and the social intervention programme is expanding.”

The governor said the growth trajectory had defied initial predictions of some multilateral institutions, affirming that the World Bank and others had acknowledged the resilience of the economy, and reviewed their positions.

He added: “Your Excellency, as we speak, there is drought in Europe and China. The Ukraine-Russia war is taking a toll on economies. In the UK, there is rationing of electricity and energy shortages in China.

“While other countries are banning food export, we are preparing for more production, in spite of floods in places like Jigawa State. We note your instruction for the release of 40,000 tonnes of grains.

“We also note efforts on improving security and measures to cut oil theft.”

The PGF Chairman told the President that some APC governors were contesting elections for a second term in 2023, adding that they have impressive records in their first term.

Bagudu said: “We note the pronouncement of ASUU. We recall the appeal of the President to ASUU while we were visiting Daura that they should consider the future of students.

“We will not dwell on that now. We are ready to accept any negotiations for resolution.”

The Kebbi State Governor commended Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha and Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, for their steadfastness and stewardship.
11  Forum / Politics / We’re Not A Social Media Party, We Have 22 Million Voters - Labour Party on: 31-08-2022 03:07 PM

The National Publicity Secretary of the Party, Comrade Arabambi Abayomi, who stated this in Lagos, said there are more than 22 million registered voters who have indicated interest in the party.

According to a report by Daily Trust, the Labour party has said it is not a social media party as it vows to win the 2023 elections.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Party, Comrade Arabambi Abayomi, who stated this in Lagos, said there are more than 22 million registered voters who have indicated interest in the party.

He said Nigerians are yearning for change as the ruling All progressives Congress, APC, has failed to meet the expectations of the people.

“We are not a social media political party. The people that are conducting our rallies across the states are human beings. We are the new phenomenon, the uncommon political party that will move our nation from consumption to production. As I speak now, with the number of support groups that have registered with their Voters cards and telephone numbers, we have 22 million Nigerians with us.

“And we are expecting more before December. Nigerians are yearning for change; they have gone through a lot and they know the person they want to lead them. You can see that all across Nigeria, the movement is so massive because Peter Obi is the only pan-Nigeria candidate who the people trust. These are Nigerians asking for positive change,” he said.

He urged the APC-led government to get ready to vacate office in 2023, noting that nomination of card-carry members and former aspirants as Resident Electoral Commissioners will not save the party from defeat.

Abayomi also used the opportunity to present Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour as the authentic governorship candidate of the party in Lagos.

While presenting the certificate of return to the candidate on behalf of the national leadership of the party, he said the controversy that trailed the LP governorship primaries was unnecessary.

Recall that former caretaker chairman of the party in Lagos, Ifagbami Awamaridi, had insisted that he remained the chairman and governorship candidate of the party, having won the primaries earlier conducted and his name published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

However, Abayomi maintained that Awamaridi was a placeholder and voluntarily resigned as recommended by law, which he said necessitated the conduct of the substitute primary witnessed by INEC. He challenged Awamaridi to go to court if he feels cheated.

“The emergence of Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour as the 2023 Lagos state governorship candidate of the LP followed all necessary laws, regulations and guidelines as provided in our Constitution, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and INEC guidelines.

“Simply to put the records straight, Awamaridi was the chairman of the LP Lagos state Caretaker Committee at one point. He was made a placeholder for the governorship primary election, thus, his name was submitted as the governorship candidate since Lagos LP was yet to finally conclude all the required processes.

“The placeholder status given to Mr Ifagbemi Awamaridi was one from which he formally tendered official resignation. Awamaridi’s letter of resignation was willfully, voluntarily and clearly signed and tendered. Of course, documents don’t lie. He has ceased to be our gubernatorial candidate,” he added.

Abayomi also inaugurated the newly appointed 24-man caretaker executive committee of the party in the state on behalf of the National Working Committee of the party.

The governorship candidate, Gbadebo, who expressed delight that the party has clarified the controversy surrounding the conduct of the primary, said he will win the governorship election.

He said Lagosians want to see development and impact of the revenue generated by the state.

Buhari said this while receiving members of Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) led by Chairman and Governor of Kebbi State, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, at the State House, Abuja, on Tuesday August 30.

President Muhammadu Buhari has warned that he will not allow anyone use their personal resources or influence to intimidate Nigerians ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Buhari said this while receiving members of Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) led by Chairman and Governor of Kebbi State, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, at the State House, Abuja, on Tuesday August 30.

The statement issued by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, partly read;

“We will not allow anyone to use personal resources or their influence to intimidate other Nigerians. We will not allow intimidations materially, morally or physically. This is the kind of leadership that can emerge and consolidate our nation.

14  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / I Only Referred To Three State Universities As 'Quack' — ASUU President, Prof Osodoke on: 31-08-2022 10:41 AM

The ASUU president accused the media of twisting his words to make them look controversial.

Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has refuted reports that he referred to state universities as quacks.

Osodeke drew the ire of many when he was alleged to have referred to state universities resuming for studies despite the ongoing strike by ASUU as quacks.

Osodeke said on Tuesday on Channels TV’s Politics Today that he was misunderstood.

The ASUU president said, “What I said was very clear. The person on the seat asked me a question that your members in three universities have abandoned you and I told them that we have a problem with LASU because the university sacked all the leaders of ASUU in the branch. That’s why they are not on strike.

“In KWASU, they are not even our members yet and they are not meeting the standard, and that in Osun they were punished for breaking our strike and they are all part of the problem.

“That’s exactly what I said and therefore our union there is not running well. That’s why I used that word, they are not running well. That the universities are not allowing our union to run well. I didn’t say state universities. Then I mentioned three again: Ekiti State University, Kaduna State University and Yobe State University.

“In those universities, although the management and the government have forced universities to announce resumption, our members said they are not teaching. That’s what I said about those three universities, but I’m surprised that they are busy writing all sorts of things. That’s exactly the word I used,” he said.

The ASUU president accused the media of twisting his words to make them look controversial.

Osodeke also spoke about Ekiti State University, saying “In Ekiti, the vice chancellor went to call a meeting on Saturday, it’s not a working day, connected with the lecturers, the deans and HODs, that body is not an organ of a university anywhere, to call for a meeting and announce resumption. It’s the senate of the university that announces resumption.

“That is the standard, so they should know that what they are doing is not correct. It’s the senate of the university that has the right by the law to announce resumption, not a committee called on a Saturday by VC.”
15  Forum / Politics / I Have Not Spoken To You For Over Five Months But You Claim We Are Close - Wike Slams Makarfi on: 31-08-2022 10:34 AM

Wike warned the former national acting chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to stop talking about him and ensure the Peoples Democratic Party wins Kaduna state in 2023.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has taken a swipe at the former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi for saying they are close friends.

Wike who spoke in Port Harcourt on Tuesday August 30, denied being a close associate of Makarfi, adding that they have not spoken in months.

He said;

“This morning, I was watching Channels, I saw former national acting chairman of the party, PDP, Makarfi, and he said he is very close to me. I don’t know how close he is to me.

“Somebody who is close to me, I don’t know when last we spoke. I have never spoken to him for the past five months. So, if you’re close to somebody politically, there is no way in five months you won’t have spoken to the person is it not?

“He said, Wike, you’re sabotaging other people. I don’t know who says the other people have not. What I want to advise Makarfi is, look, you have a job, make sure PDP wins in Kaduna State. That is your job, leave Wike alone.

“Take it upon yourself that Kaduna falls to PDP. I don’t want to hear excuses that they rigged election or they didn’t rig election. That is what I’ve told everybody. In Kano, make sure PDP wins. In Niger, make PDP wins, in Jigawa, make sure PDP wins. If you win, then see whether PDP wins here or not. It’s operation deliver your state. Don’t use anybody’s state to add up.”

Wike also reiterated that he has been bringing down the structures of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Rivers state.

He added;

“Wike and his team are busy here bringing down all structures of APC, providing dividends of democracy. In your own state, you are only talking about Wike.”

18  Forum / Politics / 2023: Why Peter Obi Is Gaining Prominence Nationwide – Makarfi on: 30-08-2022 04:09 PM

Recall that Obi dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in May and emerged as the LP presidential candidate during its Special National Convention in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

A former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi has revealed why Nigerians and especially the youths are backing Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of Labour Party to win in 2023.

According to him, Obi is gaining prominence nationwide due to the frustration of the youths.

Obi is the presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election.

In an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday, Makarfi said the youths are using Obi as a symbol due to the failure of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government.

The former PDP National Chairman also pointed out that youths should not make decisions on the presidential candidate to vote for in anger.

He, however, claimed that the former Governor of Anambra State was not allowed to achieve his presidential ambition in the PDP due to the region he came from.

He said: “Peter Obi, it is my personal opinion that even if he was frustrated out of PDP, that one must have come from where come from not from any other parts of this country, and it is this politics of edging this person out, edging that person out, and politics is like that.”

“What is happening now in my opinion is not so much about Peter Obi but the frustration of the youths and they are using him as a symbol. Let’s agree that was the case, any decision based on anger will not produce anything positive. We accept the frustration but the only rational way forward is to go the way of PDP.”
