1  Forum / Technology / Facebook Violates Its Own Rules To Allow Some Calls For Violence Against Russian on: 13-03-2022 02:29 PM
The meta-platform will allow Facebook and Instagram users from certain countries to call for violence against Russians and Russian soldiers amid the invasion of Ukraine, according to internal emails seen by Reuters on Thursday, a temporary shift in political discourse.

The social media company is also temporarily allowing some posts that call for death to Russian President Vladimir Putin or Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in countries including Russia, Ukraine and Poland, according to internal emails to its content moderators.

"As a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine we have temporarily made allowances for forms of political expression that would normally violate our rules like violent speech such as 'death to the Russian invaders.' We still won't allow credible calls for violence against Russian civilians," a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.

The calls for the leaders' deaths will be allowed unless they contain other targets or have two credibility indicators, such as location or method, the email said, in a recent change to the company rules on violence and incitement.

The temporary policy changes on calls for violence to Russian soldiers apply to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, and Ukraine, according to one email.

In the email recently sent to moderators, Meta (FB) highlighted a change in its hate speech policy pertaining both to Russian soldiers and to Russians in the context of the invasion.

"We are issuing a spirit-of-the-policy allowance to allow T1 violent speech that would otherwise be removed under the Hate Speech policy when: (a) targeting Russian soldiers, EXCEPT prisoners of war, or (b) targeting Russians where it's clear that the context is the Russian invasion of Ukraine (e.g., content mentions the invasion, self-defense, etc.)," it said in the email.

"We are doing this because we have observed that in this specific context, 'Russian soldiers' is being used as a proxy for the Russian military. The Hate Speech policy continues to prohibit attacks on Russians," the email stated.

Last week, Russia said it was banning Facebook in the country in response to what it said were restrictions of access to Russian media on the platform. Moscow has cracked down on tech companies, including Twitter TWTR.N, which said it is restricted in the country, during its invasion of Ukraine, which it calls a "special operation."

Many major social media platforms have announced new content restrictions around the conflict, including blocking Russian state media RT and Sputnik in Europe, and have demonstrated carve-outs in some of their policies during the war.

Emails also showed that Meta would allow praise of the right-wing Azov battalion, which is normally prohibited, in a change first reported by The Intercept.

Meta spokesman Joe Osborne previously said the company was "for the time being, making a narrow exception for praise of the Azov Regiment strictly in the context of defending Ukraine, or in their role as part of the Ukraine National Guard."

2  Forum / Technology / Apple Announces A 27-inch 5K Studio Display (update Hubs Naija) on: 8-03-2022 08:16 PM
Apple just announced a new external display at its "Peek Performance" event. It's designed to be the perfect companion to the company's high-end Mac lineup, including the new M1 Ultra chip-powered Mac Studio desktop. The Studio Display features a 27-inch 5K display wrapped in an aluminum shell. And just like the Pro Display XDR, this monitor comes with a nano texture option for those who work in a bright environment.

The Studio Display has three USB-C ports and a single Thunderbolt 4 port that supports up to 96W passthrough charging.

The Pro Display XDR was introduced in 2019 with a starting price of $5,000. As its price conveys, that monitor is intended for professional photo and video work, with Apple touting the Pro Display XDR’s color accuracy and brightness. Given its high price and niche audience, the Pro Display XDR did little to quell Mac users’ demands for a more reasonably priced, Apple-made external display like the Thunderbolt Display that was discontinued in 2016. Since then, Apple has sold LG displays like the UltraFine 4K and UltraFine 5K to complement its pricey XDR display.

n the months leading up to today's event, Apple was rumored to be developing new external displays. The immediate announcement became more likely this week when Bloomberg's Mark Gurman confirmed that at least one monitor was "ready to go". CONTINUE READING

4  Forum / Technology / The Tech That Will Invade Our Lives In 2022 - Update Hubs Naija on: 6-01-2022 04:47 PM
Brian X. Chen - Here we go again: Virtual reality, now called “the metaverse,” will be a thing. So will the smart home.

Each year, I look ahead at what’s new in consumer technology to guide you through what you might expect to buy — and what will most likely be a fad.

Many of the same “trends” appear again and again because, to put it simply, technology takes a long time to mature before most of us actually want to buy it. That applies this year as well. Some trends for 2022 that tech companies are pushing are things you have heard of before.

A chief example is virtual reality, the technology that involves wearing goofy-looking headgear and swinging around controllers to play 3-D games. That is expected to be front and center again this year, remarketed by the Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and other techies as “the metaverse.”

Another buzzy category will be the so-called smart home, the technology to control home appliances by shouting voice commands at a speaker or tapping a button on a smartphone. The truth is, the tech industry has tried to push this kind of technology into our homes for more than a decade. This year, these products may finally begin to feel practical to own.

Another recurring technology on this list is digital health gear that tracks our fitness and helps us diagnose possible ailments. And automakers, which have long talked about electric cars, are beginning to accelerate their plans to meet a nationwide goal to phase out production of gas-powered cars by 2030.

Here are four tech trends that will invade our lives this year.

1. Welcome to the metaverse.

For more than a decade, technologists have dreamed of an era when our virtual lives play as important a role as our physical realities. In theory, we would spend lots of time interacting with our friends and colleagues in virtual space, and as a result we would spend money there, too, on outfits and objects for our digital avatars.

“We’re in a world where people several times per day send out an image reflecting themselves,” said Matthew Ball, a venture capitalist who has written extensively about the metaverse. “The next phase takes that visual representation and dimensionalizes it. You go into an environment and express yourself through an avatar.”

That sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie. But throughout Year 2 of the pandemic, a critical mass of factors came together to make the metaverse more realistic, Mr. Ball said.

For one, the technology got better. Last year, Facebook announced that it had renamed itself Meta after shipping 10 million units of its virtual-reality headset, the Quest 2, which was a milestone.

For another, many of us were willing to splurge on our digital selves. Hordes of investors bought NFTs, or nonfungible tokens, which are one-of-a-kind digital objects purchased with cryptocurrency. Eminem and other investors invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to join a virtual yacht club.

There’s more to come this year. Apple plans to unveil its version of a virtual reality headset, which will look like a pair of ski goggles and, for computing power, rely on a separate computing device that is worn elsewhere on the body. Apple declined to comment.

Google has also developed virtual reality products for years, and Microsoft has offered a virtual reality headset for businesses and government agencies.

The metaverse could still turn out to be a fad, depending on what products emerge and who buys them. Carolina Milanesi, a consumer technology analyst for the consulting firm Creative Strategies, said she worried that it could become a reflection of the privileged few who can afford to treat their digital selves.

“The boating market is dominated by white upper-class middle-aged men,” she said. “Will we just transfer all of that into the metaverse?”

2. The smart home.
Over the last few years, smart home products like internet-connected thermostats, door locks and robotic vacuum cleaners made major progress. The devices became affordable and worked reliably with digital assistants like Amazon’s Alexa, Google’s Assistant and Apple’s Siri.

Yet the smart home, for the most part, has remained chaotic. Many smart home products didn’t work well with other technology. Some door locks, for example, worked only with Apple phones and not Androids; some thermostats were controlled by talking to Google Assistant and not to Siri.

The lack of compatibility has created long-term issues. An Apple-compatible lock isn’t useful for the family member or future tenant who prefers Android. It would also be more convenient one day if our home devices could actually talk to one another, like a washing machine telling a dryer that a large load was ready to be dried.

This year, the tech industry’s biggest rivals — Apple, Samsung, Google and Amazon — are playing nice to make the smart home more practical. They plan to release and update home technology to work with Matter, a new standard that enables smart home devices to talk to one another regardless of the virtual assistant or phone brand. More than 100 smart home products are expected to adhere to the standard.

“We’re all speaking a common language built on already proven technologies,” said Samantha Osborne, a vice president of marketing for SmartThings, the home automation company owned by Samsung.

This means that later this year, when you shop for a product like an automated door lock, look for a label indicating that the device is compatible with Matter. Then, in the future, your smart alarm clock may be able to tell your smart lights to turn on when you wake up.

5  Forum / Health / COVID: Netherlands to go to lockdown this Christmas - UPDATE HUBS NAIJA on: 21-12-2021 04:13 PM
The Netherlands will go into "lockdown" over the Christmas period to try to stop a surge of the Omicron coronavirus variant, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said Saturday.

The rising COVID infection rate has forced the country to enact lockdown until Jan. 14.

The Omicron variant of the coronavirus has triggered a renewed surge in the COVID-19 infection rate around the world. With many countries posting infection numbers that are rivalling the worst point of the pandemic once again, countries like The Netherlands are reeling from the unprecedented infection numbers so much that the government has had to step in with lockdown measures to curb the rise.
The strict lockdown measures will prevent the Dutch from joining this year’s Christmas celebrations that people all over the world have been looking forward to as the lockdown is scheduled to last until January 14th at least.

People are now only allowed two guests at home, except for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, December 26 and the New Year period when four guests are permitted.

Even though lockdowns have triggered protests in the country recently, its government has considered it necessary if they are to curb the infections after they recorded a high of 14,742 daily cases on Saturday and requested the cooperation of the populace in order to enable the country to survive this new wave of infections.

Other European countries like Germany are also considering different methods of limiting positive cases like limiting travelers from the United Kingdom. This move will require travelers from the UK to require a negative PCR test and also have to isolate for 14 days in order to gain entry to the European country.

The Netherlands relaxed most social distancing measures in September, but by November infections were back up to record levels of more than 20,000 a day.

The restrictions have been unpopular, with riots breaking out in Rotterdam, The Hague and other cities in late November.

6  Forum / Technology / How I got my first $500 from Instagram in 2021 on: 26-10-2021 03:41 AM
Hey guys, I want to share with you today how I made my first money on Instagram. Firstly, you don't need to be verified or have tons of followers before you can start making money from and on Instagram.

WHAT IS INSTAGRAM?
Instagram is a free and popular photo-video sharing app or platform where you connect with your friends and families, celebrities, brands and many more. It is currently owned by Facebook and it was acquired in 2012.

I can remember one morning I woke up from my bed, took my phone, went on Instagram and I got this In-app notification from Instagram. They said "Earn Bonuses For Going Live with Badges".

I never thought I would be eligible for an Instagram badge because I hardly post on Instagram and I had only got just 12,000+ Instagram followers at that time. I was shocked and at the same time happy.

I continued with the navigations and I got to this page:

Now, I will be sharing how I got my first earnings from Instagram. The moment I was eligible for Instagram badge, Instagram offered me bonuses but I have to complete a milestone to earn the milestone bonuses.

The milestone bonuses is divided into three parts:

Go live once for at least 15 minutes - $100
Co-host a live video with another account for at least 30 minutes - $150
Go live 15 minutes a week for 4 consecutive weeks - $250
A total of $500 bonus, WOW! that's huge!

Unfortunately, I was unable to complete the last one but I completed the first and the second one and Facebook paid me.

To Qualify For Instagram Bonuses or Earnings, you must comply with the guidelines and you can also find more details from Instagram on their website by clicking here.

Did you know I also got my second earnings from Instagram by uploading videos to my reels? Sign Up for newsletter on my blog to get updated when I publish a new post about it.

If you find this article helpful, kindly share to your friends and family.

16  Forum / Technology / iPhone 13 Might Launch September 13 [Update Hubs Naija] on: 27-08-2021 08:05 AM
At this point, Apple will almost certainly launch the iPhone 13 next month, 17. But while we don't know when the phone will officially go on sale, a random eCommerce listing hints that the next-gen iPhone could be unveiled on September 17.

The listing comes from a screenshot of a Chinese e-commerce app, initially spotted by IT Home (via MacRumors.) The image suggests that all four iPhone 13 models will go on sale on Sept. 17, while the AirPods 3 will launch on Sept. 30. There’s not much else to back up that claim, but it does dovetail with other recent rumors that claim Apple’s annual iPhone launch event will be held the third week of September.

Apple is (in)famous for having gadget launches down to a science, but the pandemic and global chip shortage have thrown a wrench into the usual routine. While the company generally hosts its annual iPhone event in September, last year it pushed the launch to October. Apple also held two other events, announcing the Apple Watch Series 6 in September and M1 MacBooks in November. All the signs this year point to the iPhone once again arriving in September, but it does seem like we’re due for multiple events this fall as well. In particular, we might see the new M1X 14-inch and 16-inch MacBooks, along with a high-end Mac Mini, in November.

If we go by previous years, it seems likely that Apple could hold its iPhone event on Sept. 7, Sept. 14, or Sept. 21. If Sept. 17 is, in fact, the sale date, Sept. 7 may be a contender for the launch event itself. It falls in line with CNET’s “Labor Day Theory.” While it’s somewhat convoluted, the theory goes that if Labor Day falls on Sept. 1-3, the iPhone event occurs the following week and if it falls on Sept. 5 or later, Apple announces the iPhone the following Wednesday. And while it’s possible Sept. 21 is in the cards, Apple has yet to hold an iPhone event after Sept. 15 (not including last year’s October surprise).

Is this Apple Nostradamus-ing ridiculous?
Yes. We all know the iPhone 13 lineup will get here when it gets here. But at this point, predicting iPhone launches is a time-honored tradition and we’ll be taking your bets in the comments below.

As a child, I have always wanted to be a computer guru. Since little I noticed I have this interest and passion in me to become a computer programmer. Well, during my kindergarten,  lol, I wanted to be a doctor so I’d be able to treat the sick ones but as time went on, everything changed. If Google, Facebook or Microsoft calls me, omo I go pack my load ni o. It wasn’t easy. But at that time, my interest in computer science and music grew stronger. In early June, I had to make a music and shot a video myself. I was using my Samsung S9, and I bought a tripod stand. I shot many takes. I never attended a shooting scene though but I just have interest in it. And the video came out so well
