KANO, Nigeria (AFP) – Riots spread across Nigeria's north on Monday as results from presidential elections showed incumbent Goodluck Jonathan assured of victory in polls that reflected deep regional tensions.

Residents reported that a home belonging to an aide to the vice president was among those set alight and a mob sought to burn a Christian woman alive in one area.

Protesters fought running battles with soldiers in Nigeria's main northern city. A 24-hour curfew was imposed on the state of Kaduna, the governor announced on radio.

Rioting began in various states after allegations of vote rigging in Saturday's vote as results showed sharp divisions between the mainly Muslim north and predominately Christian south of Africa's most populous nation.

Observers have hailed the conduct of the poll, describing it as a major change from years of rigged ballots in the continent's largest oil producer.

But concerns have also been raised over extraordinarily high results for Jonathan in parts of his native south, including 99.63 percent in his home state of Bayelsa.

In Kano, Nigeria's second-largest city, protests spread, with mobs armed with daggers, sticks and wooden planks taking up positions as police or soldiers sought to contain them. A shopping complex was set alight.

Protesters stopped cars and demanded that passengers express support for Jonathan's main challenger, ex-military ruler Muhammadu Buhari, whose stronghold is in the north.

A mob used wooden planks to beat two people who appeared to be Christians based on their dress, an AFP correspondent said. Bonfires were burned in the streets while schools and shops closed, with smoke rising above the city.

Protests also spread to the tense central Nigerian city of Jos, hit by years of deadly clashes between Christian and Muslim ethnic groups,

Soldiers fired into the air and two military helicopters buzzed overhead as protesters took to the streets in one of the mainly Muslim areas of the city, an AFP correspondent reported.

In the town of Potiskum in Yobe state, a resident reported that a mob sought to pin down a Christian woman and burn her with a tyre, but residents put the fire out and took her to hospital.

"Youths have been going about setting bonfires on the streets and burning the houses of (ruling party) supporters," resident Kabiru Usman said by phone.

"Soldiers have been drafted to tackle the situation. All streets are deserted save the presence of the mobs."

Official results were still being announced, but Jonathan had built an unbeatable lead that was to see him declared winner in the first round barring any dramatic turn of events.

Millions of voters turned out for Saturday's election as the country of 150 million people bid to put years of rigging and badly flawed ballots behind it and hold the cleanest polls for head of state in nearly two decades.

Analysts spoke well of the organisation of the election on voting day, but questioned figures in certain states showing Jonathan with more than 95 percent.

"Figures of 95 percent and above for one party suggest that these are fabricated figures and, personally, they worry me because they pose serious questions on the credibility of the election," said Jibrin Ibrahim of the Centre for Democracy and Development.

Chidi Odinkalu of the Open Society Justice Initiative told AFP: "Our presidential election was free, fair and truly incredible."

Buhari won by significant margins in parts of the north, but nothing approaching such high figures in selected states for the incumbent.

He had alleged reports of fraud on election day, but his campaign declined to comment on the results so far, saying they preferred to wait until final figures are announced.

Many analysts had feared the deepening of regional divisions that showed up in the results in a country as fractious as Nigeria, roughly split between Christians and Muslims and with some 250 ethnic groups.

Jonathan, 53 and a southern Christian, is the first president from the main oil-producing Niger Delta region.

He had an almost accidental rise to power that culminated with him being thrust into office last year following the death of his predecessor, Umaru Yar'Adua.

Buhari, a 69-year-old Muslim, has built a reputation as a fighter of corruption, but his "war against indiscipline" during his regime in the 1980s was also accused of outrageous rights abuses.

Many in the north saw in him an opportunity to return power to their economically marginalised reg

KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) – Rioting in cities across northern Nigeria has killed many people with homes, churches and mosques set ablaze, the Nigerian Red Cross said on Monday.

"There has been trouble in at least Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Adamawa, Niger and Jigawa. Churches, mosques and houses have been burned," Red Cross official Umar Mairiga said.

"A lot of people have been killed but early reports are still coming in and we are not in a position to give a figure. All our volunteers are on standby so when the situation calms down they can be deployed," he told Reuters.

When Nigeria win this World Cup...America eyes go clear

You see the ignorance that you guys displays here. What football as to do with Politics. I don't blame the President of America to have Nigerians on the Watch list. If Nigerians can compromised a standard business gmail account what wouldn't they do. Now I see why persons want to stay far from Nigerians even the good thinking bred Nigerians have nothing to do with their own Countrymen.

I have now feel the hands of Nigerians and with tears in my eyes I am writing this because it is hurtful. I wrote about it in confession
and it was deleted. When the wrong is highlighted there it is deleted. My heart is full with my experience. My business account was compromised because of unscrupulous persons here. My account was perfectly ok until I exposed it here simple because I was trying to be helpful. But the God I serve is not a sleep you know. His word says that what one sow is what one will reap.

Take care and goodbye.

its a real shame ... that ignotant ppl like this still exist

Who are you calling ignorant? My business account was being compromise after it was exposed here. You cannot even spell ignorant but you are using the word. It is better you did keep your mouth shut. If you did know the meaning of ignorance you wouldn't wrote that line after reading what was written. Some of you here just show the dunce you are with your responses. As I said before it would have been better if you keep your mouth shut.

WOW
First of all lady .. i could never in my right or wroung mind call a grown woman like you ignorant,
My mother thought me better then that . I was not refuring to you in the quote that i quoted ,
i was refuring to oyez with his comment about football and i was sayin to you how ignorant people like him still exist.
i am sorry for your hurt ... so if you would like to talk in private just add me or write me a letter.
I was not in anyway refering to you negativly in the quote
so if thats how it came out as ... am sorry

Viv sorry for blowing like this I was so upset at the time. Even looking back I can see the errors that I made which is unusual of me. All now I am unable to get inside my account. I came to this site with good intentions but now I realized that it is best to give it a break. I cannot believe that just advising a person to send me an email to the business account would prevent me from gaining access to it. Nigerian brand as been battered and it will take more than the government members to rebrand it. As for Visa application there will be a reduction of this. A sad state Nigeria is in now. Those who are too proud to see it now will be able to soon enough. Anyway take care.

If you are responsible for American visas, please keep it.
You cannot slam an entire 150 million people because one may have compromised your business account.  I feel sad for what happened to you, but your insults are a bit too much.

Where are the insults? Did I say that I was responsible for American visas? Sometimes most of you answer on this board with your stupidity showing all over your face. Do you think that Nigerians will be getting Visa like before? If the country consulate was told to issued 10 now it going to be five and the process more harder. Apparently you don't understand that the Brand was broken down with the 419 and now this it as gotten worse. Take your head out of the sand and stop attacking me. If you were well read internationally then you wouldn't be attacking me but contributing in a more positive way. It going to take the diaspora members to work together to clear the tarnished of Nigerian brand. This will not be done overnight. My God lady go and read about other countries that their brand was battered as well but the good citizens in the diaspora make sure to work hard to bring it back up. A perfect example is Jamaica. It took sports, education and good relationship to rebrand Jamaica after it was tarnished by the gun hopping guys in the various countries that never wanted no Jamaicans. Now Jamaicans are sitting in the White House etc. So stop attacking me because I know what I am talking about.

Your position is weak and some of your response is stupid as well.

I am a very proud Nigerian.  Nigerians are not the only people that do 419.  Nigerians are not the only people that do kidnapping.  Nigerians are not the only people that do terrorism.  Nigerians are not the only people that are refused visa to America.  What Nigeria needs are good leaders to make our country better.  We have more natural resources than the Americans.  We do not need to beg them for anything or to try to rebrand our image for anybody except for Nigerians.

Nigeria has the best sweet crude oil in the world.  We do not have to sell it to Americans.  Americans need us and not the other way around.

You are talking about being well read and in the know how internationally?  Think again.  You have the audacity to insult Nigerians because one person hijacked your email?  I was feeling bad for you before but I do not because you have zero intellect and I will not be wasting my time with your crap.

Whether the visa to America is reduced to Nigerians does not matter.  What the Nigerians in the diaspora need is to help Nigeria to get back on their feet so that we can become self-sufficient.  The world needs Nigeria and not the other way around.

Jamaicans can rebrand themselves how they wish.  I have no desire to work or be in the white house.  I will rather be the first female President of Nigeria and reside in Aso Rock!  Get the picture?

I am a very proud Nigerian.  I do not feel inferior to anybody because a few criminals come out of my country.  Criminals come out  of every country worldwide.  Nigerians are still the best people in the whole wide world.

I LOVE NIGERIA AND I LOVE NIGERIANS!

lol You see how ignorant and arrogant you are. No one is an island no one stands alone. Nigeria need the world just as how the world need Nigeria. My God how can you want to be a President and talk like this. As for feeling pity for me I don't need it. I have nothing bad to say about Nigerians even though I have been hurt while building friendship. I don't see the flesh my dear but the spirit the bible says we wrestle not against flesh and blood but principalities in high places. If you had follow my advices in confession then you will know that I have been preaching to those in the Diaspora to start contributing back to Nigeria which should start at the community level. You will also know that I want to do an HIV/AIDS Children Foundation with the connection between Nigeria and Jamaica. You need to know more about me before you start judging. Being a proud Nigerian doesn't mean that you should be arrogant and this is what you are displaying. I wish you all the best with your political career.
