Chapter 1

Expelled!

Carlotta fingered the crudely rolled joint and marveled at its texture.

The lanky boy by her side watched with dead fish eyes, his greasy long hair limp and damp against the sides of his face, giving him the look of a homeless shaggy dog.

“Are you sure about this?” Carlotta asked.

The boy’s eyes shifted. He leaned toward her, his voice dropping to a knowing whisper. “It’s the best herb in town. Cost me a lot of dough, too.”

Carlotta hesitated. The boy sounded like he was half-asleep or stoned out of his mind.

“Cigarettes are one thing, but I don’t know about weed.” She considered what she was about to do and her heart pounded.

Am I gonna get busted? She really didn’t care, but since the shifty-eyed boy had smoked so much more dope, she wanted his opinion on how to handle unexpected occurrences.

She licked her lips. “What happens if we get busted? I mean, my parents don’t even, like, know I totally smoke cigarettes—” she pinned the boy with a quizzical expression.

He was the notorious Sam Makiovich, nicknamed Slinky Sam.

He grunted. “Yeah, right... We only toke during recess and whenever we can cut classes—there’s no harm in that.” Slinky Sam fixed Carlotta with an amused stare for a second. His eyes went blank again as he lifted one lazy shoulder. “Cigarettes are for sissies—who needs that stuff? Wanna go on a good ride? This joint here is all ya need.”

Carlotta grinned.

Slinky Sam was a perpetual sixth grader with a moth-nibbled beard, who had enough of a bad reputation to buy a lifetime’s worth of notoriety. At the same time, his nefarious actions never seemed to land him in any serious trouble with the school authorities. He was reputed to have the best connection for drugs in the school, and he had a knack for choosing the right students to whom he marketed his illegal wares.

He must so have a bumming-radar or something. How did he know I needed something more tripping’ than just cigs today? To Carlotta, Slinky was the best answer to an unspoken need for escape from her miserable life. She hated school and wanted out, but her parents wouldn’t dream of letting her drop out of seventh grade.

It will totally serve them right if I, like, get busted.

They were behind the school dumpster, sandwiched between the wrought iron spikes of the school fence and the huge bin. Several boys sat a few feet away with their backs against the black metal surface of the bin. They were either in the seventh or eighth grade, Carlotta wasn’t sure. One of them inhaled deeply on his joint, threw his head back, and let out a series of perfect smoke rings. The others giggled.

Watching the floating white circles distort and dissipate into thin air a few inches above her head, Carlotta smiled in wonder. She had never managed to blow a perfect smoke ring. Shrugging, she reached into her jeans pocket, pulled out a ten-dollar bill, and handed it to the shifty-eyed boy at her side.

Slinky tore it from her fingers and made it disappear at once. He immediately produced a cigarette lighter from nowhere and snapped on a flame.

Carlotta placed the joint between her lips and leaned close to the flame, moving her wavy brown stresses away from her face with her left hand. Her eyes perked. She raised her brows in expectation. Her heart pounded with excitement.

How totally wasted will marijuana make me? She sucked in a deep breath, her lips taut around the rough end of the joint. She could hear her heart beating wildly, thump-thump!

I so need to get wasted; my life sucks and my parents are total jerks. She watched the reefer glow red at one end then closed her eyes for a second and inhaled. The warm smoke sailed down her windpipe and into her lungs. She waited for the promised buzz.

It feels like—

“Hold it right there, all of you!” The voice was masculine. Harsh. Deep. Angry.

Carlotta flipped her eyes open in consternation, the spent smoke curling its way out through her nose and mouth.

Slinky Sam was gone.

Approaching was the gym teacher, a beefy mountain of a man with a pudgy face that was now rigid with disapproval.

Quickly, Carlotta threw down the smoking joint and clamped her hands over her face in a desperate attempt to hide the obvious. At the same time, she stamped her foot repeatedly over the joint on the ground, crushing it beneath her heel.

Busted! She braced herself for what was to come.

The four seventh-graders also stamped-out their joints; their eyes glazed with the confused sounds of their giggles. It wouldn’t take more than a dumb teacher to tell they were already high and sailing.

But Carlotta wasn’t high, and she certainly wasn’t amused. The gym teacher was a drag; he always poked his nose where it wasn’t wanted. He had cost her ten bucks and she would make him pay—one way or another.

Carlotta looked around again for Slinky Sam. The boy had an uncanny way of getting himself out of sticky situations, leaving his not so clever customers to extricate themselves as well as they could. As usual, he’d melted away from the scene before he could be identified. How he always managed his escape, nobody knew. One minute he was right there with them, the next, he wasn’t.

In four long strides, the gym teacher closed the distance between himself and the wayward students. He landed a heavy hand on Carlotta’s shoulder. “What were you doing? Were you smoking—”?

“Let go of me,” Carlotta screeched, and struggled. The next thing she knew, she was being dragged to the principal’s office. The four boys apprehended with her came on their own accord, not minding that they’d been busted for dope smoking in school. They staggered along with deadpan expressions and let out an occasional giggle or sigh for the benefit of no one in particular.

Carlotta knew their type—they were the lucky ones. They’ll be so glad to totally get suspended. Finally, they can quit school without anyone making a fuss.

“How on earth did you come about this?” Mrs. McWatters, the principal of the middle school, demanded in her office, the loose flesh on her neck wiggling as she spoke.

Carlotta glanced around and stalled for time. She knew it wouldn’t be cool to rat out Slinky Sam, so she struggled to come up with some other kind of explanation. Quick! Say something.

The gym teacher moved off to one side and started describing what he had discovered in a high-minded voice.

“I had it at home last night,” Carlotta cut-in, her eyes narrowing in defiance. She flashed a scathing look at the gym teacher who immediately fell silent and backed away.

“I want to know who supplied you with— With this stuff,” the principal demanded. “Don’t you dare turn your back on me, young lady!” she added, yanking on Carlotta’s arm to prevent her from walking away.

“It’s called marijuana and I brought it to school with me, all right?” Carlotta snapped. “Jeez! Leave me alone.” She struggled to pry Mrs. McWatters’ clamp-like fingers off her arm. “Let go of me,” she screamed. “I hate you and your stupid school!”

But when the principal’s fingers wouldn’t budge, Carlotta planted her teeth around the woman’s wrist and clamped her jaw shut with all her might.

Startled, Mrs. McWatters yelped like a puppy and released her prey immediately. Cradling her injured arm to her chest, she stepped back to her desk and picked up the phone.

“Get Dr. Ikedi on the line for me at once!” She slammed down the receiver.

LAGOS—TO  unravel the mystery and puzzle called Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the 23-year-old Nigerian who tried to blow up a US plane, the father, Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, was yesterday quizzed by American security operatives, the Central Intelligence Agency, CIA  and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, agents in Abuja.
This is coming just as Umar Farouk’s roommates in Yemen local language institute where he was studying Arabic confirmed that he led a devout life and shunned music and women while he stayed in Yemen.
A source at the US embassy in Abuja said: “I can confirm that Umaru Mutallab was summoned to the desk office of the US embassy in Abuja where he was interrogated by men from the CIA and FBI on Monday.
CIA and FBI questioned him about his background and that of his son, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.’‘
The father had earlier this year warned US diplomats in Abuja that his son was an extremist threat.
Abdulmutallab led devout life in Yemen
Meanwhile, the roommate of Abdulmutallab, said the would-be-bomber led a devout life and shunned music and women while he stayed in Yemen.

As it stands, Nigeria is being blacklisted as a potential terrorist recruiting Ground from Al Qaeda and the rest of the Terrorist Groups out there. For One Person to deny this fact is useless because looking at it from the reality angle, there are some truth in it. The recently arrested 23 year old Nigerian who attempted to blow up a plane is enough evidence to this ill claim.
It is very important to understand what Nigeria Means, How we were conceived and our feelings for the Contraption.
Nigeria has over 250 ethnic groups, many of them are closely related to each other, which means that they share the same cultures, dishes and in most cases Languages. Therefore we divided them into three major Ethnic Groups.
The Hausas, The Ibos and The Yorubas in alphabetical other.
The hausas which i believe you westerners know very well are Muslims. I will say over 98% muslims.
They have been clamouring for Sharia and they have succeeded in imposing it in their own states.
They are also trying to impose it to the rest of the Country and You westerners are doing absolutely nothing about it. If they succeed, that means more radicals, more potential terrorists and more boko haram from Nigeria.
They started and sponsored the Boko Haram and You westerners did nothing about it simply because it is internal problem for Nigeria. The formed other radical groups that burn down the Churches of Other tribes located in their states and nobody said anything. CNN usually flash the news and that would be all for it.
The Yorubas and Ibos live in the Southern Parts of the Contraption by Lord Lugard and his Wife in 1914.
The people were not educated enough to put an end to that rubbish at that time.
The result is exactly what is happening to Nigerians now. Violence every where in The North. As i am writing this note, people are being murdered in Bauchi state Nigeria by Boko Haram and they will soon re elect their governor to rule again for another 4 years.

Nigeria is the most populous Nation In Africa and that means that whatever we set out to do, we will do it very well considering the Population. Our Borders in The North are not guarded. Therefore People From Niger Rep and Chad troop into Nigeria everyday to claim citizenship and we have no idea how to avoid that.
If Al Qaeda eventually finds its way to Nigeria, That would mark the beginning of another SOMALIA in Africa and i believe you people in the west do not want that. If this rubbish should be stopped right here from home, You better start planning on how to hand the power over to people who deserve to be our leaders and not people who will sell you oil at cheaper prices. Imagine 500,000 people from the Hausas Joining al qaeda, that will spell doom for You America.
Trust me when i tell you these fanatics will do anything to destroy you because i have seen them kill fellow Nigerians and the worst of all is that they rule the Country. Peaceful sharing of powers is not an option.
Your Mistakes helped them to win The Biafran War. Your second mistake will be to ignore the division of the Country.
I am sure that if they can be checked and infiltrated by Other tribes like Ibos and Yorubas, Your problem will be very small since the attention will be diverted to their close neighbours who in turn will always defeat them.
We therefore forward the motion to divide our Nation. We the Nigerians cannot be humiliated outside the country simply because one Muslim man attempted to blow up your plane. They have been blowing up our Churches here at home and no one apologized to us. We Nigerians cannot accept to be scrutinized with evil machines before passing through your airfields because umar farouk abdulmutallab does not speak for us.
We Nigerians will not accept insult from you because We did not ask you to merge people as large as us in the first place.
We are therefore again, asking the Americans, The UN and the EU/UK to look closely into the problems we are facing here at home first. Then you can be able to determine how Nigeria should be.
We are simply a mistake made by British Colonial Masters.

The Christmas Day airline bomb plot suspect organised a conference under the banner “War on Terror Week” as he immersed himself in radical politics while a student in London, The Times has learnt.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, a former president of the Islamic Society at University College London, advertised speakers including political figures, human rights lawyers and former Guantánamo detainees.

One lecture, Jihad v Terrorism, was billed as “a lecture on the Islamic position with respect to jihad”.

Security sources are concerned that the picture emerging of his undergraduate years suggests that he was recruited by al-Qaeda in London. Security sources said that Islamist radicalisation was rife on university campuses, especially in London, and that college authorities had “a patchy record in facing up to the problem”. Previous anti-terrorist inquiries have uncovered evidence of extremists using political meetings and religious study circles to identify potential recruits.

It emerged last night that Mr Abdulmutallab featured on the periphery of one counterterrorism intelligence operation in Britain. US intelligence authorities are also looking at conversations between him and at least one al-Qaeda member.

The event he organised took place in January 2007 and included talks on Guantánamo Bay, the alleged torture of prisoners and the War on Terror.

He is the fourth president of a London student Islamic society to face terrorist charges in three years. One is facing a retrial on charges that he was involved in the 2006 liquid bomb plot to blow up airliners. Two others have been convicted of terrorist offences since 2007.

14  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / BREAKING NEWS (Fire Guts AIT, Destroys Equipment) on: 30-12-2009 02:16 PM
Fire yesterday gutted the Lagos office of the Africa Independent Television (AIT) station (AIT), Alagbado, destroying some of its broadcasting equipment worth millions of naira. The fire outbreak, which is the third to be experienced by the media outfit, started at about 3.40pm and razed the building housing the dome, master control room, newsroom and the library.

Yesterday's inferno completely razed down the station's live studio despite the timely arrival of firefighters from Lagos State Fire Service.

Though the cause of the inferno was unknown at the time of filing this report, eyewitnesses however said it started around the dome and was first sighted by journalists in the studio.

The company's Corporate Affairs Manager, Mr. Johnson Onime said until investigations are carried out, he would not be able to say whether the incident was an act of sabotage or due to electrical fault.

Though no life was lost, some members of staff sustained minor injuries, while trying to escape from the building. The Transmission Engineer, Mr Tunji Akinlade, was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment having slumped after inhaling smoke.

The emergency medical team sent in from the state health ministry, LASAMBUS,which was led by Mrs Funlola Alese, confirmed that first aid was administered to six of the company's members of staff.

Some members of staff of the organisation were said to have battled the fire with hand-held fire extingishers before the arrival of the Lagos State Fire Service which drafted five fire fighting vehicles to combat the inferno.
It however took the firefighters about three hours to put off the fire and prevent it from spreading to other sections of the building.

The Director of the state fire service, Mr Adedayo. Aderemi Ajose, who led yesterday's operation, said the major obstacle encountered by his team was the absence of a fire exit route as fire had completety engulfed the only entrance to the section of the building gutted by fire. He said this in a way hindered them from accessing the building to promptly combat the fire.

"As you can see, we have enough vehicles here and sufficient water but the major obstacle we encountered was the absence of fire exit point. This made it difficult to gain access. We have a well equipped fire service in Lagos and gone are the days when we used to rely on Julius  Berger. As I am going now, I will still leave behind two fire fighting trucks with water, he said.

To maintain law and order and prevent hoodlums from capitalising on the incident to loot, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, who led the police team to the scene, said policemen would be stationed at the premises to ensure the safety of lives and property.

Nigerian Terrorist Says More Bombers On Their Way
By Masterweb News Desk
Abdul Mudallad (aka Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab), the 23-year-old Nigerian national charged with trying to blow up a U.S. airliner told the FBI that more bombers were on their way to target the U.S. This revelation has triggered alarm bell among U.S. intelligence and Homeland Security. In his words according to ABC News report, Mudallad told the FBI that “there were more just like him in Yemen and would strike soon.”
A tape released by al Qaeda in Yemen four days before Mudallad’s failed attempt, read: “we are carrying bomb to hit the enemies of god.” The group, known as Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, is the latest reincarnation of Islamic militant cells that have been active in Yemen for years. Yemen Islamic militants have supplied extremists to wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and to terrorist networks stretching from Africa to Europe.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has claimed responsibility for the attempted bombing of Northwest Airlines flight 253. According to a Yemeni terrorism expert, the group has roughly 2,000 members and sympathizers exploiting Yemen’s economic and political chaos to creating a base for jihad at the edge of the Persian Gulf.
Abdul Mudallad on Christmas day was subdued and prevented from blowing up a U.S. airliner by fellow passengers and the flight crew. Mudallad left Lagos, Nigeria on Christmas eve to the Netherlands where the next day in Amsterdam he boarded Northwest Airlines flight 253 bound for Detroit, Michigan, U.S. He was traveling one way, without a return ticket. The flight had 278 passengers aboard.
Twenty minutes prior to landing in Detroit, the cabin erupted with firecracker sounding explosion followed with smoke smell. A passenger climbed over others to confront the suspect while other passengers and flight crew rushed to assist him. The suspect was subdued with his hands, pants and legs burnt from the explosion. He was taken to the burn unit of the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, 20 miles from the airport. A U.S. intelligence official said the explosive device was a mixture of powder and liquid that failed when the suspect tried to detonate it.
The explosive powder has been identified as PETN – pentaerythritol tetranitrate, which was concealed in the suspect’s underwear. According to reports, Mudallad told the FBI that he was trained for months in Yemen, given 80 grams of the explosive sewn into his underwear for activation in a U.S. bound plane.
