12  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Dakar (Senegal) unveils Monument to the African Renaissance on: 4-04-2010 09:30 AM

Senegal on Saturday unveiled a colossal statue during a lavish ceremony amid reports of criticism over the monument's construction at a time when the western African nation is struggling financially.

The 164-foot structure -- about a foot taller than the Statue of Liberty -- shows the figures of a man, a woman and a child, arms outstretched, facing the Atlantic Ocean.

President Abdoulaye Wade says the statue, which he designed, is a monument to Africa's renaissance. Critics say the opulent copper structure is merely the product of the president's own self-indulgent vision and poor governance.

And though it dominates the skyline of Senegal's capital, Dakar, the monument falls far short of the president's claim that it is the world's largest. Several other statues are listed by multiple sources to be taller, including China's Spring Temple Buddha, which stands just under 420 feet.

The statue is "an affirmation to be proud of Africa -- to be proud to be black," said spokeswoman Gia Abrassart.
This monument does not belong to Senegal. It belongs to the African people wherever we are.
--Malawi President Bingu Wa Mutharika

Other dignitaries in attendance at Saturday's ceremony, which coincided with the 50th anniversary of Senegal's independence, echoed that message. African-American Rev. Jesse Jackson and Senegalese-born rapper, Akon were in attendance.

"This renaissance statue is a powerful idea from a powerful mind," said the Rev. Jesse Jackson in remarks to the crowd of hundreds waving flags at the foot of the lighted monument. "This is dedicated to the journey of our ancestors, enslaved but not slaves."

Malawi President Bingu Wa Mutharika praised Wade for constructing a monument that represents Africa.

"This monument does not belong to Senegal," he said. "It belongs to the African people wherever we are."

North Korea, which made the statue's construction possible, also sent Wade a congratulatory message, the state-run Korean Central News Agency reported.

In exchange for the money to build the statue, North Korea received a piece of Senegalese land, Abrassart said.

The message from top North Korean official Kim Yong Nam "expressed belief that the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries would grow stronger in various fields in the future, too," according to KCNA.

Who is the stupid poster of this message?
Firstly, go and check for the meaning of castration.
Secondly, please don't come here to show us your stupidity.
Thirdly, if you don't know what to write about; shut up!

PS:- If you were bringing up a topic of female circumcision or female genitalia mutilation; then I would have concurred though I abhor such practices

nice try, but how are you sure she wasn't doing those for fun? i'm sure she didn't mean any harm to anybody.

Even if for fun.... Every user must abide my the terms of service which we all accepted while joining. Opening of several accounts under different names is not looked upon as simple fun.
For those asking a rather silly question of can someone memorize that many user Ids and passwords, then I say that those people have actually lost a great part of the functionality of their brains.

Admins have lots of privileges and so can see much more than what the average user is authorized to. IP address conflicts are not the only ways of checking misuse.
15  Forum / Politics / Nigeria's over-reliance on fossil fuel income on: 26-01-2009 06:49 PM
My people,
The wind is slowly turning and we are not watching. In a few years, Nigeria would lose most if not all of her fossil oil clients due to several factors; global warming, environmental degradation, change in foreign countries reliance on fossil oils from Africa, new technology that permits sustainable power supply as well as less production of greenhouse gases.

President Barack Obama of the USA is seriously advocating for stronger fuel efficiency standards and so are many other leaders. Considering the economic crises, solutions being promulgated and jobs to be created from new policies, laws and technology.

Let us ask our leaders, what happens when we can't sell our crude oil, when there are no longer nations interested in buying fossil fuels? Over the years we have being very content with crude oil income and even with the huge income, Nigeria makes from the sale; we are yet to lift ourselves from the shackles of poverty.

Let us wake up and make hay while the sun shines. Lest we become like one of the nations with coal as their only mineral resource. Where are they now?

Guy, try to make a blog or something. Posting here and getting replies wouldn't change anythingcos your leaders don't sign in to NaijaPals. I suggest you make a blog online. Let the world see it. Nigerian leaders listen more to what the international community say or better still, send your information to the Nigerian dallies. They would really appreciate your stance and help as a freelance journalist. Cheers.
