The Goodluck Jonathan administration has cancelled the 2012 Democracy Day ceremony that would have held in Abuja Tuesday (today).

However, President Goodluck Jonathan will make a national broadcast at 8 o’clock this morning to mark the anniversary.

A statement by the presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, on Monday said the Jonathan broadcast would be aired live from the President’s office. The President’s speeches in the past have been widely said to have been pre-recorded.

There was no official reason adduced for cancellation of the Democracy Day activities but there were speculations that the government’s decision was informed by the security situation in the country, especially the fear of terrorists’ attack.

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies are investigating a complaint that Canadian pop sensation Justin Bieber roughed up a man who was taking pictures of the performer at a suburban shopping center, police said on Monday.

Deputies were called on Sunday to an outdoor shopping area in Calabasas, about 23 miles northwest of Hollywood, by a man who reported having just had an altercation with Bieber, the sheriff's department said in a press statement.

According to the statement, the man said he was taking pictures of Bieber, who was with his girlfriend, actress Selena Gomez, when the singer "physically battered" him.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Lady Gaga told fans she was "devastated" at having to cancel her sold-out show in Indonesia following threats by Islamic hard-liners, who called her a "devil worshipper."

Controversy over the concert is a blow to the predominantly Muslim country's reputation as a tolerant, pluralist society that respects freedom of expression.

Some fans accused police — who refused to issue a permit over concerns about security — of buckling to the will of a small group of thugs.

"We had to cancel the concert in Indonesia," the 26-year-old pop diva tweeted to her followers Sunday night after promoters acknowledged concerns about her own safety and that of her "Little Monster" fans if the show went ahead.

Calabar – The Nigerian Navy has successfully completed the construction of a locally made vessel, the first of its kind in the West African subregion, the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral OláIbrahim said.

Ibrahim said this on Sunday in Calabar in a message to the Inter Denominational Church Service held to mark the 56th Anniversary of the Nigerian Navy.

The message was delivered by the Field Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Olufemi Ogunjimi.

In May 2009, the child, Jacob Philadelphia, was visiting the White House with his father, a former Marine who was leaving his 2-year stint working for the National Security Council as part of the White House staff. The father asked to take a family photo with the president. Jacob said he had a question for Obama, who was then in his fifth month in office.

"It's still prison," said one inmate, "Luke," 23, who withheld his full name. "In your mind, you are locked (up)."

Nonetheless, during the summer months, the island's 115 prisoners can sunbathe on the beachfront, go fishing, play tennis or take a relaxing sauna. And these aren't low-level offenders either; CNN reports that most of the inmates have been sentenced for serious crimes, including murder and rape.
