1  Forum / Health / ‘Only 30% married men use condoms with prostitutes’ on: 24-05-2012 09:23 PM
Only 30.5 per cent of married men who reportedly engage in “penetrative sex with commercial sex workers use condoms,” a research has shown.

The study showed that out of the 1,396 and 459 married male respondent who reside in urban and rural areas respectively, only 137 had used commercial sex workers in the past six months prior to study and only 63 men had used a condom at the last visit.

The Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, Prof. John Idoko, said this during the presentation on PreExposureProphylaxis by the United States Mission.

According to him PrEP is the newest HIV prevention tool which involves the use of Truvada, an antiretroviral to prevent HIV infection.

About 62 per cent of new infections, he said, occured among persons perceived as practicing “low risk sex”, including married segxwal partners.

Idoko cited three approaches that would aid the implementation of PreP, including remodelling with data analysis. He added, “We want to do a feasibility study in four states.”

Also speaking, the Director (Prevention, Care and Treatment) at the Health International (FHI 360), Dr. Hadiza Khamofu, said infections in low risk relationships were acquired through high risk segxwal encounters

She cited a recent study by...

2  Forum / Relationships & Romance / How Are Sex And Money Connected? on: 24-05-2012 08:50 PM
This week I sponsored at an event hosted by one of my coaches and since I am beginning to launch some work that connects sex and money, I was asked over and over again, "How exactly are sex and money connected?" I found myself explaining some of the myriad ways they are connected and decided if they had those questions, you probably do too. It's not always immediately apparent, but allow me to break it down. Sex is about relationships, energy, desire, abundance, joy, pleasure, connection, divinity. Money is about relationships, energy, desire, abundance, joy, pleasure, connection, divinity. Money comes from the divine/universe/spirit/God/energy/whatever-you-call-it and it comes through our relationships. It comes through people from the divine. It's a tool to assist us to live the life we are meant to live. It's a way we exchange energy with others...and of course, so is sex! I've seen the effects of the money-sex connection for many years in my work. I remember coaching a male client who started to have a lot of trouble with money and right after that he called me because he started having trouble getting erections for the first time in his life. I sometimes hear from women when...

4  Forum / Technology / Reps summon minister over proposed electricity tariff increase on: 23-05-2012 08:41 PM
House of Representatives on Tuesday ordered an investigation into the Federal Government’s plan to hike electricity tariff effective June 1.

It invited the Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, and the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission to appear before its Committee on Power within one week to explain the rationale for the hike.

The resolution followed a motion by a lawmaker from Lagos State, Mr. Yacoob Balogun, who drew the attention of the House to the tariff hike under matters of urgent public importance.

The Action Congress of Nigeria legislator observed that it would be unfair to Nigerians to ask them to pay more for electricity they did not enjoy.

He argued that the Power Holding Company of Nigeria had continued to send bills to Nigerians even when it was aware that power supply in the country was erratic.

Balogun also said PHCN had reportedly frustrated the distribution of pre-paid metres to Nigerians in its bid to continue charging for power that was not consumed, through analogue methods.

He added, “Power generation and distribution have been very erratic and efforts to put things right have failed in the past.

“Despite the declaration of emergency in the sector, regular power supply remains a mirage to Nigerians.

“Increasing electricity tariffs as have proposed is to make Nigerians pay more for a service they do not enjoy and further subject them to additional hardship.”

Balogun had initially sought for the suspension of the planned tariff regime but the Speaker, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, intervened to guide the House.

Tambuwal suggested that rather than call for the suspension of the tariff regime, the House should first invite Nnaji and NERC to brief the Committee on Power on the reasons for the policy.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the United Action for Democracy, Mr. Ayodeji Ajayeoba, has described the planned removal of fuel subsidy and the increase in electricity tariff as “insensitive”.
5  Forum / Health / We did not beg Lagos govt – Sacked doctors on: 23-05-2012 08:38 PM
The Nigerian Medical Association has denied media reports (not in THE PUNCH) that some sacked doctors had started lobbying the Lagos State government to be reinstated.

A statement by the association in Lagos on Monday said the media report was not only false but a product of the imagination of the reporters.

The association condemned the report and described it as an attempt to cause a division between its National President, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, and the leadership of the Medical Guild.

The publication had reported that some of the sacked doctors were lobbying the state government to be reinstated and also alleged that the NMA President was against the strike embarked upon by the Medical Guild.

The NMA stated, “We describe the story as scurrilous, an outright falsehood and a desperate attempt to blackmail the President and the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association, as well as distract the NMA leadership from her commitment to a just and quick resolution of the conflict between its members and the Lagos State government.”

The story which was published in the Monday edition of the newspaper said an anonymous source had said that the President of the NMA, was unhappy with the position of the Medical Guild on the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, but was afraid that if he failed to dance to the tune of the doctors, he might be impeached.

“To say that Enabulele, who was overwhelmingly elected only 17days ago would be bothered about impeachment over his courageous and progressive handling of the Lagos quagmire is ridiculous and ludicrous,” the NMA said, pointing out that the NMA leader had an unblemished track record as a progressive crusader for social justice.

“Nigerians and indeed the whole world are very much aware that for over a week, the NMA President and the national leadership of the NMA have consistently made efforts to resolve the labour crisis in Lagos State, despite the hard line anti-labour posture of the Lagos State government,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the government on Tuesday urged the National Industrial Court to refuse to entertain the suit filed by 788 doctors sacked by the state.

The doctors had filed the suit prior to their sacking to pre-empt the government from taking any disciplinary action against them for embarking on a three-day warning strike in March 2012.

Their counsel, Mr. Bamidele Aturu, on May 16, 2012, filed another application, seeking the court to reverse the sacking.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner of the state, Mr. Ade Ipaye, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria told Justice Benedict Kanyip to strike out the suit.

However, the judge said, “This court came to existence to avoid the technicalities obtained in the conventional courts. What is the point in declining jurisdiction and striking out the case by mere looking at the suit on the surface, when we know there is no other court that has jurisdiction to hear the matter.”

Ipaye insisted the suit was incompetent on the basis that it was instituted on behalf of the doctors’ association – the Lagos State Medical Guild – not recognised by law.

Aturu, however, argued that the association could sue in a representative capacity.

Kanyip, who affirmed his promise to give the case an accelerated hearing, adjourned till May 24 to deliver ruling on government’s application.

7  Forum / Politics / Shocker for Jonathan: Northern govs defend Buhari on: 18-05-2012 09:20 PM
The 19 northern governors on Thursday rose in defence of the Presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari’s party on Wednesday had described the Jonathan administration as the “most corrupt ever,” in response to the Presidency and the Peoples Democratic Party’s attacks on his person over a comment in which the retired General threatened bloodshed in 2015 if the government dared rig the elections.

The northern governors on Thursday said Buhari’s comment was in order, observing that many eminent Nigerians had made worse comments.

Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, Babangida Aliyu, during a question-and-answer session with journalists after the Forum’s meeting in Kaduna, noted that Buhari had only sought to keep the Federal Government on its toes in order to ensure a free-and-fair election in 2015.

Aliyu is the governor of Niger State and a member of the PDP. Like Aliyu, the majority of the northern governors belong to the PDP.

The PDP had said that Buhari was bloodthirsty and suffering from “combat withdrawal syndrome.”

Aliyu, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, explained that what Buhari meant was that govenment should not ‘go and do bad election.’

He noted that Buhari’s statement was subject to different interpretation and cautioned eminent Nigerians against further inflammatory statements that could heat up the polity.

He said, “In a democratic system every individual has his ways and there are many of us whose ways of communication are quite different from others. Give the same statement to somebody, he may have used a different vocabulary.

“Again, certain facts are understood, that if this happens that would happen, I think it is a natural thing to do. Maybe those who may be too concerned have not looked at what other eminent Nigerians have been talking about.

“I saw one that said Nigeria is going to be Somalianised. I saw another one who has been talking like there would be war tomorrow. That statement should be taken on its own value.

“All of us who are involved in elections – political parties, contestants and voters themselves – we must all be careful so that there would be a semblance of good in whatever we do. But, again, like I said, certain people are so much in that position, they should be careful with certain vocabularies they use. So, both ways let’s take it on our own strides and ensure that future elections are seemed to be transparent and are seemed to be good.”

Buhari had made his now controversial comment while hosting members of the CPC from Niger State who had paid him a courtesy visit in Kaduna.

“God willing, by 2015, something will happen. They either conduct a free and fair election or they go a very disgraceful way. If what happened in 2011 (alleged rigging) should again happen in 2015, by the grace of God, the dog and the baboon would all be soaked in blood,’’ he reportedly told his party men.

The Presidency had issued a quick response via a statement by Jonathan’s spokesman, Reuben Abati, saying Buhari’s statement was saddening and not worthy of a statesman.

The PDP, in an earlier reaction, had lambasted Buhari and asked the Federal Government to engage him in order to cure him of what the party said was “combat withdrawal syndrome” haunting the ex-head of state.

“If the retired general was suffering from combat withdrawal syndrome, then the Federal Government should allow him to lead the ECOWAS military contingent to Mali or Guinea Bissau to enable him an opportunity to exorcise the bloodletting demons apparently haunting him,” publicity secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, said at press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.

However, the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria had also on Wednesday lent its support to Buhari’s warning.

‘’We hold no brief for anyone. But it is true that if elections are rigged, as they have been so shamelessly and brazenly done by the PDP since 1999, naturally people will react, and in doing so it is impossible for anyone to predict how far things can go,” the party said in a statement by its spokesman, Lai Mohammed.

In a communiqué by the northern governors on Thursday, they noted the worsening state of security in their region and resolved to intensify efforts at finding lasting solutions to the problem by reaching out to all stakeholders.

The communiqué reads in part, “The alarming state of insecurity in the Northern states was discussed, thereafter, the Forum resolved as follows:

“We shall intensify efforts to find lasting solutions to the problem by reaching out to all stakeholders.

“The Forum cautioned eminent Nigerians against making inflammatory statement capable of affecting our fragile unity and security. We must be concerned with unity and development of the country in all ramifications.”

Meanwhile, the South-East chapter of the PDP on Thursday cautioned Buhari and described his contentious statement as “incendiary and bereft of patriotic intent.”

The PDP’s national vice-chairman in the zone, Col. Austin Akobundu (retd.), in a statement, applauded the prompt reaction of the Presidency and PDP to Buhari’s “outbursts.”

“The lamentable and wanton killing of South-Easterners, the shedding of the blood of our promising graduates on National Youth Service, soon after a similar speech by the CPC Presidential candidate after he lost the 2011 elections, informed the urgency of our speaking out now,” Akobundu said.

8  Forum / Religion / Nigeria gets 95,000 slots for 2012 Hajj on: 18-05-2012 09:15 PM
A total of 95,000 Muslim pilgrims from Nigeria are to perform the 2012 Hajj.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Alhaji Muhammad Bello, Chairman, National Hajj Commission, said this on Thursday at a meeting with the Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje-led House Committee on Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

Bello, who briefed the committee on the 2011 Hajj, said the update on arrangements was necessary so as to have a hitch free exercise.

He said the number was 4,000 lower than the allocation Nigeria got in 2011, adding that 10,000 of the figure were allotted to private Hajj operators in the country while the commission and the state pilgrim boards would share the remaining 85,000 slots.

The NAHCON boss, who attributed the shortfall to lack of space and facilities in the Holy land, said the commission was still in talks with the Saudi authorities on the possibility of getting more slots to cater for the huge requests for Hajj seats in the country.

In the allocation for the 2012 Hajj, Bello said the least number of 80 slots went to Abia, while Kaduna State had the highest of 7,560 and Kano State, 6,778.

On the transportation of pilgrims from Nigeria to Saudi Arabia, he said the first Hajj flight would depart Nigeria by September 18 while the last flight would leave the country on October 17 as the Jeddah airport would be closed by October 21.

On return the schedule, he said since Arafat Day was likely to hold on October 25, the first return flight would leave Saudi Arabia for Nigeria on November 1, while the last would be November 30.

Bello told the committee that arrangements for 2012 Hajj was better than that of 2011 as Saudi authorities would allowed 25 per cent of Nigeria pilgrims to land straight in the Holy City of Madina.

He said states had started paying their remittances to enable the Commission which transportation, accommodation and health care delivery of pilgrims while in Saudi Arabia.

He warned that any state which failed to remit payments by June 1, would lose the allotted seats which would be re-allocated to other willing states.

The chairman said some states were penalised for some misconducts during the 2011 Hajj by losing some seats, adding that 536 seats were recovered and redistributed to those states that complied with the law.

Chairman of the Committee, Elendu-Ukeje, said the briefing of the commission was convincing enough that it was ready, but hoped that it would be translated to a hitch free Hajj.
9  Forum / FunnyHub (Jokes + Comedy) / Bishop calls for Buhari’s arrest over 2015 comment on: 18-05-2012 09:11 PM
he Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Most. Rev. Felix Ajakaye, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure the arrest and prosecution of former Head of State, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for making unguarded statements.

The bishop said this in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday in an interview with journalists.

He said the security agents ought to have arrested Buhari for threatening that there would be bloodshed in the country if the 2015 was rigged.

According to him, rather than trading words with the retired general, the Presient ought to have asked law enforcement agencies to prosecute him for threatening the peace of the nation.

The cleric said Buhari, the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change in the 2011 elections, should not be allowed to destabilise the country because he wants to rule at all costs.

He stated that the likes of Buhari had loyalists who could translate such comments into actions, saying they should not be allowed to turn the country to a theatre of war.

Ajakaye said the nation was going through a trying time, adding that such inflammatory comment could worsen the already bad security situation in the country.

He said, “Nigeria belongs to all of us and we have no other place to go and we should watch our utterances, no matter our status. We are in a very trying time and we need to be prayerful and work.

“We need to be positive and concrete in our thoughts and work our thoughts. It is unfortunate and unacceptable for a person like Maj.-Gen. Buhari to have mentioned that Nigeria would be bloody in 2015.

“I don’t know what our security agents are still waiting for. They should be decisive no matter whose ox is gored. If another person had made such a statement, they would say he was planning something against the country.

“But for making such a statement I will say that seems to be his character and we should not allow him and others to be saying that anymore, the laws are there.”
10  Forum / Celebrity Talk & Discussions / 3 Questions You Should Ask Before You Save A Relationship on: 18-05-2012 08:32 PM
Are you close to giving up trying to understand the nitty-gritty of how to save a relationship with a guy you love more than your life? First, try to realize that every relationship will always have its shares of ups and downs; highs and lows.

As they always, say, relationships are like a roller coaster ride. Sometimes, you are up; sometimes you are down. That is why it is crucial for anyone who is in a relationship - whether it is for marriage or a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship; or perhaps a fiance-fiancee relationship, to understand that it always takes two to make it work. There should always be the indispensable ingredient called "compromise". Simply put, meeting halfway. Without it, all else is doomed to fail and you do not succeed in your mission to save a relationship with the man or woman you love.

Therefore, while the relationship has not reached the brink of separation, make sure you find the best techniques of "how to save a relationship". In that way, you will not lose that person you love so much. But to save your relationship, keep in mind that it will boil down to the following factors which you will also need to consider:

1. What Is Causing The Impending Break-Up?

First, consider what is causing the problem if you are really bent on finding out how to save a relationship. Unless you are able to pin down the real reasons why there is indifference between the two of you, you will not succeed in making the relationship work. You see, it takes knowing the problem, recognizing it, making amends for it and working hard to improve it that will shape the success of any relationship. So what is causing the trouble?

As soon as you have identified it, work around it. It does not mater who is at fault but it should be clear to both parties that there is a problem you both need to address and that the only formula to overcome it is to "compromise" or "find the middle ground" where everything is neutral and therefore, there is no chaos.

2. Is It Worth The Effort To Patch Things Up?

Second, consider if it is truly worth your time and effort to iron things out with your partner. Every so often, the husband or the boyfriend is not cooperative because there is the involvement of a third-party in the relationship. If this is the case, the best thing to do would still be to give it a try to save the relationship. But then if it happens for the second or third time, then perhaps you...
11  Forum / Law and Crime / We Planned To Invade Lagos - Arrested Boko Haram Leader Muhammed Sulaiman on: 17-05-2012 08:34 PM
To bomb churches and other strategic places

THANKS to the timely intervention of the Joint Task Force (JTF), the dreaded Boko Haram Islamic sect would have unleashed terror of unimaginable proportion on Yorubaland particularly Lagos State had their leader in South-West, Muhammed Sulaiman not been arrest last week.

National Daily competent source disclosed that the Boko Haram South-West leader who was arrested at Farawa Babbam Layi, Maiduguri Road, Kano and now facing interrogation at the headquarters of State Security Service (SSS), Abuja has allegedly confessed that he is the coordinator of a planned attack on strategic places in Lagos and other parts of South-West Nigeria. He allegedly listed a five star hotel, Tafawa Balewa Square, a popular church and market on Lagos Island and a new generation mega-bank as targets of their planned onslaught.

The Ogbomosho, Oyo State born terrorist was quoted as saying that: “We decided to move our attack temporarily from the North to the South starting from Lagos. We realized that Lagos is Nigeria's most important commercial city; events that happen in Lagos have more impact than anywhere in the country. If we hit Lagos, Nigeria will shake; imagine if we had carried out our plan to bomb churches in Lagos,” an informed security source quoted Sulaiman last weekend, adding: “We had identified some important locations where we will hit in other to gain maximum attention. We listed Tafawa Balewa Square, a busy market in the Island, popular churches, hotel and a new generation bank. We wanted to start bombing Lagos.”

National Daily gathered that after the successful attack in South-West locations, the group will now move to the South-East launching their attack in Enugu before targeting other cities in the South-East zone.

Boko Haram redefined

Sulaiman gave further details of the next stage of their terrorism plans. He claimed that “they have infiltrated some places in Lagos where they now have their agents working for Boko Haram. Boko Haram is not strictly a Hausa or Northern Group par se, it is an Islamic consciousness group made up of Muslims from across the country. Some Boko Haram members are Yoruba, Ibo, Ijaw even Efik.

Sulaiman said the sect decided to take the attack to the South in order to prove that Boko Haram is a national movement, not a Hausa militant group par se, our security source said.

It was further disclosed that Sulaiman confessed to have arranged for certain instrument of violence to be moved in a discrete manner from the sect's hideout to some identified strategic locations in the South-West. He claimed his men were all but ready to strike before he was arrested by security agents.

“Sulaiman said Boko Haram planned to give Lagos and other cities in the southern region hell. He claimed that what happened in some parts of the North would have been a child's play compared to what the seat planned to have in Lagos,” our source said.

It would be recalled that a caller to an African Independent Television (AIT) phone-in programme, who claimed he was speaking for the Islamic sect allegedly issued a 72-hour ultimatum after which the sect would attack Abuja and Lagos State. The caller to the phone-in programme, which was broadcast on Friday last week had demanded that President Goodluck Jonathan personally and unconditionally meet with leaders of the sect in Yobe State to discuss terms of a ceasefire failing which Boko Haram would unleash more terror on Abuja and Lagos State.

However, in a seeming reaction to the caller's statement on AIT, a statement allegedly from Boko Haram has disowned the caller as an imposter.

Grand plot

Expressing displeasure at the arrest which he considered unfortunate, Sulaiman said the plot by the militant Islamic sect, Boko Haram, to carry out violent attacks in the southern part of the country has probably been frustrated by security agencies.

The sect, he explained, had chosen some southern cities such as Lagos, Ibadan, Enugu, Onitsha and Warri for attacks.

National Daily gathered that following sustained attacks on the sect's strongholds in Borno and Yobe states by security agencies, Boko Haram members had dispersed to other parts of the country.

Sources said that the sect, which had carried out several devastating bombings and gun attacks in Kano that claim over 185 lives, was looking beyond the North in its future terror campaign.

One of the reasons for spreading its operation to the South, it was learned, was in order not to limit its campaign to an ethnic agenda.

Security source said that there is the likelihood that some sponsors of Boko Haram are Southerners.

Source said that the mastermind of the Christmas Day bomb attack on St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger State, Kabiru Sokoto, was sighted in Lagos after the incident.

It was gathered that security agencies were leaving no stone unturned in studying the moves of the arrested terror suspects and drawing probable inferences from them.

“It was not a coincidence that Sokoto, who had been on the wanted list of the police before December 25, was sighted in Lagos.

“His presence in Lagos was not for fun. This is one of the angles security agencies are working on.

“I think the group has noticed that security is not tight in the South and there have not been bombings. They are out to cash in on the laxity,” a source said.

The Senate Committee on Police, which probed the escape of Sokoto from custody, had last February said that the suspect was seen in Lagos on December 13.

The committee chairman, Senator Paulinus Nwagu, had, while presenting the report of the probe said, “Police intelligence revealed that prior to his arrest on January 14, 2011, Kabiru Sokoto had been on the wanted list of security agencies.

“Sokoto was reported to have been noticed within the vicinity of Snake Island, Lagos, and left Lagos sometime on December 13, 2011 and disappeared from surveillance monitoring until January 11, 2012.

“He was later traced to Abaji in the Federal Capital Territory.

“Police detectives traced him from Abaji to Abuja on the same date and further traced him to Asokoro, Abuja, where he was finally apprehended at about 0240 hours (2.40 am) on January 14, 2012, at the Borno State Governor's Lodge at Iro Dan Musa Street, Asokoro, Abuja.”

Enemies within

Intelligence report had revealed that Boko Haram sympathisers had moved to the South, from where they coordinated operations of the sect in the North.

It was learned that the sect decided to shift to the South in order to divert the attention of security agencies, which are on the trail of its members in the North.

“Since the heat has been turned on them, they have been moving to Lagos and other cities, where they mix with unsuspecting northerners residing in those cities.”

He said that the sect's plot to attack the South was aimed at further creating the impression that there was instability in the country. “You will observe that activities of the sect are ebbing due to unrelenting efforts of security agencies. But Boko Haram is also devising another method. This time around, it is looking at ways of attacking the South.”

However, the security source said, he lamented that security agencies would have recorded more successes, if not for pro-Boko Haram elements in the Presidency. He said: “Some people, who are sympathetic to the Boko Haram cause, are frustrating security agencies' plans to “deal a final blow on the sect.”

President Goodluck Jonathan on January 8 had said that the sect had infiltrated his government.

“Some of them are in the executive arm of government; some of them are in the parliamentary/legislative arm of government while some of them are even in the judiciary.

“Some are also in the armed forces, the police and other security agencies. Some continue to dip their hands and eat with you and you won't even know the person who will point a gun at you or plant a bomb behind your house,”the President said.

Red Alert

It would be recalled that the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Raji Fashola, had pulled down three places of worship near the seat of government at Alausa because of incriminating security reports against the sect.

“There is security alert all over the country, not only in the South-West; the so-called plan is something we don't expect them to execute before we take proactive steps.

“Security agents are aware of their advanced plans and are nipping them in the bud.

“The southern Muslims have value for human lives; they know that nobody can fight for God. They are not inconsiderate. The Muslim leadership in the South are putting their members on the alert; imams are already doing that,” a leader of the Muslim community was quoted as saying.

The Federal Government recently offered to dialogue with Boko Haram, the Islamic fundamentalist sect.

“Government is ready to discuss. History has proven that even wars that are fought for decades, at the end, are only concluded by dialogue,” Vice President Namadi Sambo reportedly said.

Sambo spoke in Abuja at the national symposium organised by the Nasirul-Lahi-Faith Society of Nigeria (NASFAT) on “Islam and peaceful co-existence in a contemporary multi religious society”.

To negotiate with the sect, the government may enlist the assistance of traditional rulers, according to Defence Minister Haliru Bello, who spoke while receiving the Italian Ambassador to Nigeria; Roberto Colamine, in his office.

“The concern of the government is peace and what the government is doing is for the benefit of all Nigerians,” the Vice President said.

Sambo lamented the activities of some negative forces whose actions have portrayed Islam in a negative and evil light, saying: “Islam is a religion of peace; it is a way of life. It cannot promote senseless killings and wanton destruction of property. I am not aware of any religion in the world that encourages unprovoked and relentless attack on other people.”

He reiterated the determination of President Goodluck Jonathan's administration to provide adequate security for the lives and property of all Nigerians and visitors.

The Vice President highlighted the strides the administration had recorded in achieving the objectives of the Transformation Agenda which, he said, cut across improved electricity supply; education; agriculture, transportation system; and poverty alleviation.

He hoped that the activities of militant groups would not jeopardise the government's desire to propel Foreign Direct Investment (FDIs).

Describing the security challenges posed by the sect as temporary, the Minister stressed that the challenges were restricted to a few local governments in the North-eastern zone.

The minister assured the envoy of President Goodluck Jonathan's desire to make the difference in governance, in line with the administration's transformation agenda.

He said a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Nigerian and the Italian governments was awaiting the Federal Executive Council's ratification.

According to him, the MOU would enhance Nigeria's peace keeping efforts.

The Ambassador had called for dialogue in the resolution of Nigeria's security challenges. He agreed with the Minister that the ratification of the MOU would strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

Meanwhile, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar III, has urged the Muslim Ummah to champion peaceful co-existence and education.

He also called on religious leaders to be mindful of their utterances so as not to overheat the polity, adding that aggrieved groups should embrace dialogue.

The Sultan dispelled rumour that there are plans to islamize Nigeria.

“If there is such plan, I should know because I was once in the military. We should trust ourselves. I wish to assure Christians that we are one big family created by Allah,” he said.

Lamenting that impunity has become the order of the day, the Sultan who co-chairs the Nigeria Inter-religious Council (NIREC) with Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) President, Ayo Oritsejafor, urged Muslims to promote peace and mutual co-existence in line with the Holy Quran.

“We must promote moderation and toleration in our society. We must equally open effective channels of dialogue with all segments of the society, including those who hold contrary opinions to that of our own.

“Islamic civilization both here and elsewhere is predicated on the promotion of learning not only in the religions sciences but also in Science and Technology. The conflict between faith and science did not originate in the Muslim world. Muslim civilization bequeathed to the world the study of Science and Technology. The time has come for Muslims to strive harder to reclaim this golden legacy.

National Security Adviser (NSA) Gen. Owoye Azazi recently stated that economic woes created a fertile ground for the recruitment, indoctrination, brainwashing and training of terrorists and other insurgents.

Speaking on the theme “Northern Nigeria, the prosperity agenda and national security” at the Northern Impact Summit organised by the Arewa Transformation and Empowerment Initiative Gen. Azazi also said lopsided economic development is capable of causing the collapse of a nation.

He noted that even though bombings and terrorist attacks have been concentrated in the North, they have adversely affected the nation's economy.

Gen. Azazi said the nation cannot afford to leave any of its states or region behind in the march towards a long overdue achievement of prosperity. He said comprehensive regional economic transformation is at the forefront of the nation's policies.

Security sources said that Sulaiman was originally offered the number two position in Boko Haram's hierarchy but was eventually not considered because of circumstances he refused to admit.

The suspect, who was arrested with his wife and five children, allegedly confessed that he was involved in the manufacturing of explosives and allegedly accepted the ownership of an AK rifles, one pistol, 10 improvised explosive devices and 1,000 pieces of live ammunition.

Sulaiman and members of his family were paraded before reporters in Kano before he was taken to Abuja where he was detained. He faced a team of SSS officials for preliminary interrogation. Security sources, said he looked disoriented and appeared to be jittery during interrogation session.

However, he was said to have pleaded with the security agents to release his wife and children who he said were not involved in his activities. He allegedly confessed to having been involved in some notable Boko Haram operation in the North and further stated that he is the coordinator for the planned Boko Haram operation in the South-West.

US President Barack Obama’s ground-breaking support for same-sex marriage was met with applause from beleaguered gay rights campaigners in Asia on Thursday, but also with scorn from hardline opponents.

Rights and marriage for homosegxwals barely figure on mainstream political agendas in the Asia-Pacific region, where traditional values dominate in many societies and sodomy remains illegal in some.

As in the United States, religious conservatives decried Obama, and most gay rights campaigners said in fact that the issue of wedlock was premature for now.

The region’s only country where there is a serious debate about legalising gay marriage is Australia, but Prime Minister Julia Gillard said she was unswayed by Obama’s change of heart and would continue to oppose it.

“I’ve made my mind up and my position on this is well known,” she told reporters after Obama for the first time said that same-sex couples should be able to wed, igniting a fury of election-year debate in the United States.

Gillard said that when a bill calling for legalising gay marriage comes before the Australian parliament later this year, “I won’t vote for it”.

“This is a matter that people form their own views on, a deeply personal question, people will think about it, work their way through it.”

Australia passed a legal amendment in 2004 explicitly defining marriage as between a man and woman, but activists believe pressure is mounting for Canberra to extend the right to same-sex couples.

Cheering supporters in Australia expressed hope that Obama’s announcement would set a precedent that ripples across the Pacific.

Reverend Jeremy Greaves, whose liberal church in Darwin welcomes worshippers “regardless of segxwal orientation”, said: “I think for gay people within the church it’ll come as a wonderful surprise and a great bit of news.

“I think for many gay people there’s been a long struggle for recognition in the eyes of the church and the state, and I think this is another sign that times are changing for them,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

In the mainly Catholic Philippines, the only country in the world apart from the Vatican which still bans divorce, President Benigno Aquino’s government said cautiously that any change to the law would have to come from lawmakers.

But even the Progressive Organisation of Gays in the Philippines said it was not pushing for same-sex marriage, while hoping that Obama’s advocacy would prompt Aquino to address other issues of concern.

“We are not asking for wedding bells soon, we are merely requesting the government to face up to the reports” of alleged discrimination against gays in the Philippines, the group’s spokesman Goya Candelario said.

Neither is the issue of marriage high on the agenda for gay men and lesbians in India, “because they know it will upset more people”, said Ashok Row Kavi, head of Humsafar Trust, a Mumbai-based group dealing with male segxwal health.

“Already there is so much opposition, if they start talking about same-sex marriage, it will increase further. We can only fight this much at a time,” he said.

But Kavi also acclaimed Obama as “a terrific president.”

“I wish the Indian political class and state learn their lessons from Obama. Our traditional society is uncomfortable about these issues — they don’t know how it works.”

But there was a vitriolic response from Vinod Bansal, spokesman for India’s right-wing Vishwa Hindu Parishad group, who said gay marriage would “completely destroy our social fabric”.

“It is Obama’s view, it can’t be endorsed by societies anywhere in the world. No religion permits same-sex marriages, neither is it beneficial in any way to society as a whole,” he said.

“It will destroy the family system as well as the cultural and social values of different societies. What is morally wrong will never be accepted in India.”

In Muslim-majority Malaysia, Ibrahim Ali, a parliamentarian and president of right-wing Malay group Perkasa, said that Obama’s announcement would have no effect on public opinion.

But young Malaysians should nonetheless be educated against this “unnatural” lifestyle, which is against Islam, he said.

15  Forum / Law and Crime / Oyedepo Fails To Appear In Court For Slapping A Young Lady on: 10-05-2012 09:18 PM
The founder of the Living Faith Christian Church International, David Oyedepo, failed to appear in court on Wednesday when the suit filed against him for slapping a young lady during a church service last year was mentioned at the Ogun State High Court.

A Lagos-based lawyer, Robert Igbinedion, had filed a suit on behalf of the lady, seeking an award of N2billion as “general and exemplary damages”against the popular pastor.

Oyedepo's lawyer, Agboamwu, who showed up on behalf of the first and second respondents, namely Oyedepo and the church, pleaded for time to file a defence.

The court granted the defence five days to respond to the suit.

Igbinedion had filed for the enforcement of the lady's fundamental rights to freedom from inhuman and degrading treatment, human dignity, fair hearing, and freedom from discrimination.

Justice Ojo, who heard the case at Court 1, High Court, Sango-Ota in Ogun State, however, adjourned hearing till June 1, 2012.

Igbinedion had earlier condemned Oyedepo's action, referring to the altar call for witches to come out as "illegal".

Last year, Oyedepo gave the lady a slap during a church service when she claimed to be “witch for Jesus” after responding to an altar call made by Oyedepo for witches to come out.

Igbinedion described the labelling of witches as "unconstitutional, and a breach of Section 34 of the Constitution of Nigeria, African Charter on Human and People's Right, and United Nations Universal Declaration on Human Right".

The suit is asking the court to compel Oyedepo to issue a self-signed public apology to the young lady, which should be published in two national dailies and aired on one international satellite television station.

The suit also seeks that a similar altar call be made for corrupt government officials, bribe-giving contractors, drug dealers and other category of sinners who are members of the Oyedepo's church.

Lagos Taskforce Recovers Arms, Munition, Charms, Others At Apapa

By OLASUNKANMI AKONI

IKEJA – Lagos State Government said it recovered different kinds of guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons under the Ijora-Marine Bridge, during the ongoing clearing of the entire axis by its joint taskforce.

It also said several foreign nationals, believed to be illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries, were also displaced from the cleared site.

The state government has, meanwhile, called on the Federal Government to direct relevant authorities to carry out immediate structural integrity test on the Ijora-Marine Bridge, which leads to one of the biggest seaports in Africa, to avert imminent collapse as well as likely loss of life and property.

The clearing of the area, which commenced on Monday, was sequel to Governor Babatunde Fashola’s directive to rid the area of all tankers, trucks and other vehicles that were parked indiscriminately in the Apapa area, which had been a major cause of daily gridlock to motorists and other road-users.

Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, said the weapons were recovered by the joint taskforce comprising security and state agencies without any arrest.

Bello, who spoke during an inspection tour and unveiling of the “Regeneration Programme of Apapa Area,” said the recovered weapons would be handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation and action.
