No fewer than 5,000 underprivileged persons in Lagos State will benefit from Global Harvest Church’s N10m shopping vouchers during the Easter celebration.

Senior Pastor, GHC, Victor Adeyemi, said the less-privileged would use the vouchers to shop for food items, clothing and other materials freely during the celebration.

Adeyemi said the programme entitled, ‘Shop for Free’, is a social impact activity geared towards bringing smiles on the faces of the poor during festive periods.

“The poor are at the very heart of our Lord. He fed them and provided their daily needs, but our nation has been on the verge of social challenges which has resulted in unemployment, insecurity and high rise of poverty across the country,” Adeyemi said.

He said the gesture was the church’s little contribution towards tackling societal challenges.

Adeyemi added, “Food items, clothing and other materials will be purchased with the money.

“Also, individuals partnering the church will also support with their various articles that will be displayed at the various stores erected on the church premises where the beneficiaries can come in and shop for what they need. The ‘shop-for-free will hold on Good Friday.
184  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / David Mark seeks death sentence for oil thieves on: 28-03-2013 11:03 AM
The Nigerian Senate met with service chiefs over Islamist attacks in north.

The Senate President, David Mark, said on Wednesday that he will readily endorse a penalty of death for perpetrators of oil theft, commonly called bunkering, as four senate committees opened hearings on the Petroleum Industry Bill driving to overhaul the oil sector.

Mr. Mark’s comments came as senators, separately, held a six-hour closed door meeting with the service chiefs over escalating violence that has seen dozens killed within the past weeks, mainly in the northern states.

The meeting was attended by the Chief of Defence Staff, Rear admiral Ola Ibrahim, Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Azubuke ihejirika, Chief of Naval staff, Rear Admiral Dele Ezeobi, Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshall Alex Barde and the Director of the State Security Services, Ita Ekpenyong. The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, was absent.

Senate spokesperson, Enyinnaya Abaribe, said the talk was to know “what the problems are and also to be able to work with the security agencies to bring the very serious security problems we have to possible resolution.” He refused to provide further details of the briefing, and the senate’s position.

At the inauguration of a joint committee hearing on the Petroleum Industry Bill, Mr. Mark accused “big men” in the country of sponsoring massive oil theft that has seen reasonable cuts in oil production levels.

He said oil theft was becoming a “major embarrassment” for the nation, and the PIB must be crafted to curb that.
“The bill must ensure that the current pace of oil theft is minimized to the barest minimum. It appears we are beginning to get bad names in the international community. Few individuals must not make us earn such bad names,” Mr. Mark said.

“The law must prescribe huge punishment that will serve as deterrent. If it will attract death penalty, I am ready for it, I will endorse it. Oil theft cannot be done with a tea cup, big men involved in it are powerful, it is unusual situation that requires unusual solution.”

Mr. Mark added that the bill be made to expand the frontier of oil exploration beyond the Niger Delta region, adding that by so doing, Nigeria’s economy will get a boost and incidences of agitation from various regions will be reduced.

190  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Lamido/Amaechi’s 2015 Presidential Campaign Posters Flood Kaduna on: 27-03-2013 03:09 PM
The campaign posters of Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido and governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi, have flooded the streets of Kaduna ahead of the 2015 presidential elections.

The posters bearing the two governors’ photographs, with Governor Lamido as president and Governor Amaechi as his running mate, were seen at the popular Stadium and Station Roundabout in Kaduna North and South Local Government Areas within the metropolis on Monday.

Although both governors at different occasions denied rumours of their perceived 2015 ambitions, the absence of Governor Lamido at last Saturday’s reconciliatory meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kaduna, which had Vice President Namadi Sambo in attendance, has fueled the rumour.

However, when contacted, the press secretary to Governor Lamido, Mallam Umar Kyari said he was not in the best position to comment on the matter and referred our correspondent to the state PDP chairman.

This is coming barely two days after the Bamanga Tukur-led National Working Committee of the PDP held its reconciliatory meeting in the North West zone. Besides Governor Lamido, Governors Magatakarda Wammakko of Sokoto and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano States were also absent from the meeting.
191  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Secondary school dropout consults for teaching hospital on: 27-03-2013 09:52 AM
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Usen Effiong, for posing as a medical doctor and consulting for the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for more than two months.

The State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Etim Dickson, said Effiong, an indigene of Ukot Usung Itam, in Itu Local Government Area was caught based on intelligence report from the UUTH.

He said, “The police arrested Effiong in the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital impersonating a medical doctor.

“The Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association, Akwa Ibom State branch, Dr. John Udobang denied ever knowing the young man. He is not a member of the association.”

He said the police had investigated Effiong and found out that he was actually impersonating a medical doctor, adding that the law would take its course.

Udobang told PUNCH Metro that he received a call from the Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, UUTH, Dr. Sunday Udo on the activities of Effiong.

He said, “Udo told me that they caught someone who has not finished secondary school parading himself as a consultant in the teaching hospital as a medical doctor.”

Udobang explained that he went to the teaching hospital where he interviewed the suspect and found him with stethoscope and sphygmomanometer (blood pressure apparatus).

He said, “We also found some prescriptions and forms that he wanted to fill to become a member of the association of resident doctors”

“Later, when they went to look for him, he was found in the doctor’s consulting room eating.

“He has confessed that he is not a doctor, and has not finished his school certificate, and has been coming there to consult in the last two months.”

Asked how it was possible for an SS II dropout to be consulting in a teaching hospital, Udobang replied that people used to see him but did not know his intention.

He said, “The Dean whose table he was sitting on used to see him and thought he was a medical student or a newly employed doctor that he has not known.

“It was after one of the younger doctors saw him and asked the Dean who he was that they started investigating him.”

193  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Rupiah Banda, Zambia’s ex-president arrested on: 26-03-2013 10:05 AM
Former Zambian president, Rupiah Banda has been arrested in connection with a Nigerian oil deal.

A Zambian government official who disclosed this to Reuters, said Banda is being “accused of stealing more than $11m (£7m) during his three years in office.

Mr Banda who was stripped of presidential immunity earlier this month, was questioned for nearly three hours before being freed on bail, Reuters news agency said.

However, the former president has denied the charges, saying he was a victim of a witch-hunt. He is due in court today.

Shortly after being released, Mr Banda, while addressing his supporters, told them to remain calm and that he would win the case in court.

It would be recalled that the former Zambian leader lost the 2011 elections to Michael Sata, whose government instituted the investigation of several high-profile deals made by Mr Banda’s administration amid accusations of corruption.

Mr Banda served as the president of Zambia, Africa’s top copper producer between 2008 and 2011.
194  Forum / Sports / Mikel annoyed by wedding rumours on: 25-03-2013 08:59 PM
Nigeria midfielder John Mikel Obi is bristling at reports that he is about to get married to model Sandra Okugbue.

A national tabloid reported on Monday that Mikel was set to wed the former toilet soap model, but the midfielder angrily dismissed the claims.

"I don't understand where this is coming from," Mikel told KickOffNigeria.com on Monday.

"I know her. We're friends, but we haven't spoken in a long time and definitely not about marriage."

The report claimed that the traditional introduction has been scheduled for this Sunday in Onitsha, but Mikel was firmly categorical in his dismissal. "There's nothing like that," he said.

Mikel played in Nigeria's 1-1 draw against Kenya on Saturday, and joined the rest of the squad in attending a reception held in honour of their African Nations Cup triumph by Akwa Ibom State governor Godswill Akpabio on Sunday in Uyo.

The midfielder flew out to London later that night.

198  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 17 AMBULANCES FOR THE USE OF GEJ on: 25-03-2013 07:20 PM
Just outside President Goodluck Jonathan’s office sat 17 ambulances, just in case he or one of his aides fell ill. They were seldom if ever used.

No actual health-care facility nationwide had as many, and in fact a few still have none at all. But as soon as a Nigerian newspaper took a photo of the ambulances and published a story about them, they suddenly disappeared — probably to an underground garage.

Jonathan is president of Nigeria, which should be among the world’s most prosperous nations. After all, it produces an estimated 2.4 million barrels of oil each and every day. With oil now selling at $93.61 a barrel, that’s $224 million in income daily. And yet many hospitals can’t afford to buy an ambulance. The reason, in my view: Nigeria is the most corrupt nation on earth.

Sure, Transparency International lists almost three dozen states as more corrupt — Chad, Haiti, Laos, Yemen, Cambodia and the like. But are any of those nations as wealthy as Nigeria — taking in $81 billion annually, just from the sale of oil? No, not even one of them. So Nigeria steals and squanders more money than any other nation, making it the world’s most corrupt, by that measure.

Nigerian journalist Musikilu Mojeed finds all this so discouraging.

“With its geopolitical power, economic resources and middle class,” he laments, “no country (with the possible exception of Saudi Arabia and Egypt) has the power to change the course of black/African civilization like Nigeria.” After all, Nigeria is Africa’s most populous state — and large, twice the size of California.

So Nigerians are living an opportunity squandered — particularly now. Egypt is in turmoil. In just the last few days, in fact, many Egyptians have been calling for a military coup — anything to rid the state of its widely despised Muslim Brotherhood government. And a new report by the World Economic Forum ranked Egypt the least safe and secure tourist destination among 140 tourist nations evaluated.

Egypt has lost its place as the Arab/African worlds’ leader, and Saudi Arabia never had it. So for Nigeria, the time is ripe. But its leaders seem interested only in stealing the state’s money to make themselves rich beyond imaging. Think about it: $81 billion a year just from the oil, while most every local government official still tells his people the nation just doesn’t have enough money to fix the roads, schools or hospitals. (Roads are in such terrible shape that government officials generally travel any distance by helicopter.)

And Nigeria’s people — well, they are as mistreated as any on earth. In only nine nations — among them Liberia, Sierra Leone and Somalia — do more mothers die during childbirth. And in only 10 states, including Chad, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, is the average life expectancy lower. Right now the average Nigerian’s average life span ends at 52. That may be why the median age of Nigerians is just 18.

A few months ago, the Economist Intelligence Unit published an evaluation of the best places for babies to born in 2013, given their probable welfare as children and the chance for a safe, comfortable, prosperous life. Switzerland, Australia and Norway were the top three. The United States came in at 16th, largely because “babies will inherit the large debts of the boomer generation.”

Dead last: Nigeria. “It is the worst place for a baby to enter the world in 2013,” the report said.

Even with all that wealth, only just over half the population has access to clean drinking water, and one-third to a toilet, UNICEF says. Two-thirds live below the poverty line. Only one child in four who contracts pneumonia is given antibiotics, and only about half the population is literate.

The CIA also cites endemic “soil degradation; rapid deforestation; urban air and water pollution.” All this in a county whose gross domestic product stands at $236 billion a year, in the same league as Denmark, Chile, Israel and the United Arab Emirates — prosperous, successful states to be envied.

Goodluck Jonathan is certainly aware of all of this. After all, taking the oath of office, he swore to “devote myself to the service and well-being of the people of Nigeria. So help me God.”

Well, just last week he demonstrated who he really is and what he stands for when he pardoned a former state governor who’d been convicted of embezzling state funds and laundering the money. That pardon triggered a broad, angry uproar.
