In a seeming parody of the popular Nigerian movie, ‘Sergeant Okoro’, played by comedian Sam Loco Efe, a 45-year-old man, Felix Okoro, is in police custody for the alleged impersonation of a police sergeant. The suspect was arrested by the Area E Festac Police Command on the 18th of August along 1st Avenue, Festac town, while escorting a trailer loaded with aluminium roofing sheets.
The driver of the trailer was asked to stop for inspection when Mr. Okoro came down and told the police officers on duty not to delay the trailer since he was a police escort with it.
Chris Onyeisi, the new deputy police spokesperson, paraded the suspect. “The suspect was arrested after police officers on duty discovered that he could not answer questions relating to the station he claimed to come from,” he said. “He was subsequently detained and on investigation, we discovered that he is a dismissed corporal and (had) never attained the rank of sergeant. He was dismissed from the Nigerian Police in 1998 on the grounds of possession, smoking and selling of Indian hemp.”
Mr. Okoro’s fake uniform bore the rank of a sergeant and had the police number, 139199. He said he was unlawfully dismissed from the Nigerian police, but joined the spy police in 2003.
“I will tell you what really happened,” he said. “Some thugs at Ebgeda Junction beat me to coma and framed me up with the Indian hemp. My unconscious body was detained at the Idimu police station, though I was under the Isokoko Agege police station. (An) officer tried me at Idimu and that was how I was unlawfully dismissed.There are so many people doing this escort job, so that was how I started making a living from it too. I do not regret my action.”
Mr. Onyeisi reacted to this: “The Lagos State Commissioner of Police has ordered that fake police officers who act as escorts and are engaged in any duty should be fished out. This will be a continuous exercise to rid the public of fake officers.”
