Oh, and here's the BBC radio special on it too:

Guess only solution and suggestion I can think of is knowledge. If the young Naija kids are aware folks like these guys exist then I guess they'll think twice before falling victim to these shameless criminals.

64  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 419 criminals targetting Nigeian football youth on: 11-08-2009 07:48 PM
This breed of Nigerian fraudsters are a pretty despicable bunch. With scams like the Nigerian letter, you can at least put some blame on the victims due to the fact that it's mainly their greed that caused them to fall victim in the first place. But targeting innocent Nigerian kids who are naive and desperate in pursuing their dreams of playing professional football abroad is WRONG in all sorts of ways. It's pure unadulterated scum like these guys that will help Nigeria retain the infamous title of being one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

67  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigerian beheaded in Saudi Arabia on: 11-08-2009 04:01 PM
The execution of Nigerian, Qorbi bin Mussa Adam, in Saudi Arabia has sparked serious concern with Amnesty International. According to the organization, an alarming number of foreign nationals have been executed in Saudi Arabia recently.

Qorbi bin Mussa Adam allegedly murdered a Saudi national. He was the second Nigerian to be executed in Saudi Arabia this year after another Nigerian, Jamil 'Abbas Shu'ayb, who was beheaded in May. Saudi Arabian authorities have disclosed very little information about the trial of both cases.

Another Nigerian, Suliman Olufemi was sentenced to death in 2004 and awaits execution. Olufemi's trial was held in secret and conducted in Arabic which he does not understand. He had no legal representation or any legal assistance and it is feared that he was tortured in pre-trial detention in order to force him to confess.

Qorbi bin Mussa Adam was the 51st person to be executed in Saudi Arabia this year alone, according to monitoring conducted by Amnesty International. Out of the 51 people executed in Saudi Arabia this year, 36 were Saudi Arabians and 15 were foreign nationals.

68  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nollywood Captured on: 11-08-2009 04:00 PM
Professional photographer Pieter Hugo travelled around Nigeria and captured rather enigmatic photos to reflect his take on the Nollywood industry in Nigeria.

Here is an excerpt from Pieter Hugo's website about his exploration of Nollywood:

"In Africa, Nollywood movies are a rare instance of self-representation in the mass media.

The continent has a rich tradition of story-telling that has been expressed abundantly through oral and written fiction, but has never been conveyed through the mass media before.

Movies tell stories that appeal to and reflect the lives of its public: stars are local actors; plots confront the viewer with familiar situations of romance, comedy, witchcraft, bribery, prostitution. The narrative is overdramatic, deprived of happy endings, tragic. The aesthetic is loud, violent, excessive; nothing is said, everything is shouted."

77  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Africa's Tallest building to be built in Lagos,Nigeria on: 4-08-2009 05:22 PM
The multi-level, 65-storey building tagged as the "World Trade Tower", is set to be constructed in the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos, which will will act as the home for the Lagos World Trade Centre. The construction of the building is being handled by BHS International Limited.

BHS Managing Director, Mr. Martin Baines, says the firm is projecting a 24-hour, seven days a week, and 12 month influx of international visitors within five years after completion:

"We remain consistent in our basic goal of turning the complex into a city centre providing top class hotel, business and leisure facilities and encapsulating the spirit and tradition of Lagos and Nigeria."

"The proposed city centre will have regular art activities with the atmosphere of Hollywood and little Las Vegas, with artists and movie stars working on a regular visit. With assorted restaurants, nightclubs, a huge shopping arena with about 2,000 shops, a modern world trade centre for the first time in Africa is here in Nigeria.

Mr. Baines mentioned the execution of the project would be handled by international experts working with local contractors. "The aim is to stimulate employment as well as acquisition of skill by the Lagos labour force."

Africa's tallest building is currently the 36 year old, 50 storey "Carlton Centre" in Johannesburg. South Africa, that stands at 223 metres tall.
