48  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Day students were attacked by ex-militants on: 10-12-2009 03:19 PM
The atmosphere in Choba and Aluu areas of Port-Harcourt, three weeks ago, turned sour and repugnant when some ex-militants in the Aluu rehabilitation centre stormed the streets with planks and cutlasses, barricading roads to molest unsuspecting pedestrians and motorists.

Like people acting in obedience to a charm, the frightened victims offered their bags and pockets willingly to be searched for fear of being killed. Most of them were students of the University of Port-Harcourt (UNIPORT) who were going back home after the day’s lectures.

The molestation lasted for about three hours before the intervention of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF). Having fled the JTF, the miscreants still managed to go to some lodges in Aluu where they raped some girls and abducted some others to their camps.

The era of conflict in the hitherto volatile Niger Delta region was believed to have gone following the invitation to surrender and proclamation of an unconditional amnesty to militants by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. The amnesty saw scores of militants turning in their arms. Aluu, a community named in Ikwerre Local Government Area and neighbouring town to the UNIPORT, was selected as camp to these hitherto disgruntled elements.

As part of the post-amnesty plan, they were to be paid a monthly allowance of N65,000 for the first three months. This, the Federal Government said, was to enable it work out modalities for their full engagement and re-integration. Some 50 days after, these former guerilla fighters in Rivers State had not been paid any of their entitlements. Their patience ran out soon after.

Their weapons had been taken away but surely not their sense of violence. So, they descended on the hapless students. From Aluu, their camp, to the entrance of Delta Campus of the university, they vandalized all they could lay their hands on. They even had no qualms to molesting anything that looked like a female.

Having brought the situation under control, the JTF stationed two armoured personnel carriers at strategic locations believed to be the flash points.
49  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Agonies on a virgin campus on: 10-12-2009 03:13 PM
As students were struggling to escape the helmet of failure, others on a virgin campus struggle for survival of the fittest. Students who pioneered a virgin campus pay through their noses as they face the battle of lack of social amenities and infrastructure.

The government never knows the agonies students experience on a newly-built campus. When my school, the Anambra State University, relocated to our present campus, it was like hell. The environment looked like a ghetto and life was very difficult. It was so lonely that one could hear the echo of another from miles away. The surrounding area was so bushy that one could hear the sounds made by wild animals. The nearest community was not trekkable except one wanted to attempt suicide.

Transportation system was nothing to write home about. Students counted loses at the end of each semester. Soon, the joy and pride of securing university admission began to diminish. Malaria attack became rampant among the hostellers, not only because of its unhygienic nature but also unhygienic water. No electricity, students relied solely on lanterns and candles for their studies.

We still contend with insufficient lecture halls, hostel accommodation, electricity, bad roads and poor water supply.

This situation made many students who didn’t have visions save to be called campus boys and girls even more unable to define their goals. All that mattered was surviving, and as the meagre provision from parents did not go far, those who could not stand could not for long resist the lure of campus prostitution, armed robbery and cultism.

Tessy (not real name) in Room 27 comes from a middle class family. Because her dream was to be an exceptional girl on campus, she joined a cult group. On realising the titanic tussle for survival on campus, she seemed on a mission to make a name for herself on all the trivial areas. She changed hair style every week.

Survival of the fittest on virgin campuses is something that needs the government’s attention. The government should ensure that the campus is properly built and the atmosphere conducive enough to enhance and motivate academic performance before young easily impressionable adults are thrown in there.
50  Forum / Relationships & Romance / What a gentleman should not do on: 10-12-2009 03:12 PM
What am I saying? Being a gentleman, just like being a lady or even a leader is not just about position, or financial capability; it’s about treating people right. I believe that to excel in this global village, we need to imbibe cultures that are acceptable everywhere. No doubt, it is almost impossible to know the etiquette that relates to every single culture on earth, however, if one understands the need to consider other people, it is likely that one may scale through any culture easily.

Today, we will look at the specific things that a gentleman should not do both in public and in private. Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

A gentleman should not shout at other people irrespective of their social status. Come to think of it, shouting shows you are not in control of yourself and of the situation. Shouting is a little man’s way of expressing himself. A gentleman influences others by his charming courtesy.

A gentleman does not condescend on anybody. The more cultured you are, the more accommodating you are with people. It is ordinary men who think the way to show they are made is to treat other people with disdain. Proper gentlemen relate with everyone, making the effort to ensure each person they meet is treated with dignity and respect. If you have ever met any member of the British royal family, you will find that they take their time to make everyone they meet feel special.

A gentleman should not treat women shabbily. Real gentlemen understand that everyone is equal before God, whether male and female. He also understands that women are of the fairer sex, who are not as privileged in society as men are, so he gives them respect. This does not mean he bows or worships them; but he understands their disadvantages and seeks to compensate them. Even the Bible says men should honour their wives if they want their prayers answered (I Peter 3:7).

A gentleman must not behave unfairly to people. In other words, gentlemen are fair in their dealings with people. To a gentleman, what is good for the gander is also good for the goose. Being fair to all also means showing integrity; a gentleman will deliver on what he promises.

A gentleman does not parade himself. Gentlemen are very circumspect, not boastful. A real gentleman will never attempt to show off to others the number of cars he possess or the number of houses he has built. Simply, a gentleman is not "in your face" as many people do nowadays.

A gentleman is careful with the company he keeps. This is because he understands that friends, to a very large extent, influence thoughts and behaviour.

A gentleman avoids bad communication; this includes sexist, racist or any bad taste joke or comment. A lot of people make the mistake of sending or forwarding emails that depict people of other gender or race or even the disabled in bad taste without realising that they are also presenting themselves in bad taste by doing so. A gentleman will not send or forward anything that presents other people discomfortingly.

Finally, don’t forget we all benefit when we do things right.

Policemen at the Special Fraud unit (SFU), Milverton, Ikoyi, Lagos, have arrested a bank manager and his junior colleague for attempting to defraud their employer of over N37 million.

The junior colleague, who was of the funds transfer department, moved the money at his boss’ behest.

The transaction was executed through the Nigeria Inter Bank Settlement System.

It was learnt that the transaction almost pulled through until the suspects attempted to move N10million out of the amount to another account.

Police sources said the fraud was noticed because the receiving account had not done that volume of transaction, hence the receiving bank raised the alarm.

The suspects, Ndubuisi Onyido, who is the branch manager and his junior colleague, Amadi Jephter, are being detained at the SFU.

The Commissioner of Police in charge of SFU, Moses Saba, who confirmed the arrest, said the money has been recovered.

He said the suspects confessed that they used forged documents to open the account at the bank.

Saba said over N37 million was illegally transferred to the account of Suzjeph Global Concept Limited in a new generation bank.

He said investigations revealed that Suzjeph Global Concept Limited belongs to Jephter.

Onyido instructed Jephter to transfer 10million into his company account, First Virgin Investment Limited.

But before this could pull through, the scam blew open.

Onyido said the suspects would soon be charged to court.

They have been searching for their 34-year-old son, Okechukwu, whose whereabouts is unknown.

Okechukwu was said to have left home on June 10 for Ojo Barracks to claim a debt from two of his kinsmen - Chikwelu Okoro and Ikechukwu Anierobi - but has since not returned home.

Is something you should know is an article of what Buhari says......... just go through it
56  Forum / Politics / Yar’Adua: Buhari insists succession debate right on: 10-12-2009 02:10 PM
Former Head of State Gen. Muhammadu Buhari yesterday said Nigerians should concentrate on constitutional provisions on succession, instead of personalising the ill-health of President Umaru Yar’Adua.

Buhari, who was welcoming participants to a meeting of the National Democratic Movement (NDM) which plans to grow into a party, said although Yar’Adua is ill, Nigerians have the right to discuss succession and the future of the nation.

Gen. Buhari said: "We are meeting at a time when the nation is in a sombre mood, considering the ill-health of President Yar’Adua.

"We must all commiserate with his family and people of this country and pray to Allah, the Most Compassionate and the Most Merciful, to grant him quick recovery and good health.

"We also pray that a greater sense of responsibility will prevail so that serious issues will not continue to be trivialised or politicised at the expense of the nation.

"Naturally, these circumstances raise the issue of succession; unfortunately, the debate was beclouded by personalisation of the matter.

"We urge Nigerians to concentrate their attention on the constitutional provisions regarding succession. Indeed, Nigerians have the right to discuss and express their opinions on this issue as it touches on the future of their country.

"Expectedly, this cannot but have negative consequences on governance, and it is the ordinary people who will continue to bear the brunt of these failings."

Gen. Buhari decried poor service delivery and urged Nigerians not to fold their hands.

He added: "Indeed, the deterioration registered in just the last six weeks is very frightening. In Anambra, not only is the constitution flouted, court orders are ignored with impunity.

"In Oke-Oka, Ondo State, a Senator caught red-handed, stealing people’s votes, is bound to enjoy all the protection that those before him have.

"Wherever you go, wherever you look, it is the same sad old story of failure of service delivery and disrespect for laws and processes and state protection for those who violate them.

"We must begin to realise what we are up against; these are clear indications of collapsing institutions.

"For when institutions cannot deliver the services for which they are established to deliver and when they become a stumbling block to change, then citizens cannot stand by and complain. They have to rise to the challenge."

The former Head of State pleaded with Nigerians to unite and rescue the nation from the grip of "death".

He said the task at hand is beyond reforms and pleaded with Nigerians to treat those who do not believe in electoral laws and processes as traitors.

Gen. Buhari said: "To be sure, the challenge is beyond reforms; for, when institutions collapse, the law, no matter how good, is no remedy.

"The ultimate reform is the reform of our attitudes and frame of minds. We must believe in the sanctity of our laws and processes, particularly the sanctity of the electoral processes.

"Nigerians must realise that those who don’t believe in the electoral laws and processes must be treated as traitors who must never be trusted with public office or any responsibility.

"Those of us who are sufficiently worried about these breaches and their consequences on our nation have an obligation to come together, stay together, work together to wrest this great country from the grip of death, as it were."

Gen. Buhari decried the poverty challenge facing the nation and claimed that it underscored why Nigerians cannot fold their hands.

He said: "Only yesterday, the media reported the latest UNDP report, which said, ‘despite its vast resources, Nigeria ranks among the most unequal countries in the world’. The poverty problem in the country is partly a feature of high inequality which manifests in highly unequal income distribution and differential access to basic infrastructure, education and job opportunities.

"What this report is saying is something that many of us see everyday and it is precisely why we can’t fold our hands and watch while the poor continue to suffer, for this in itself raises our crime rates and undermines democracy."

On the prospect of NDM, he urged members to brace up for the struggle ahead.

Gen. Buhari added: "Let it be made clear that the NDM is not going to be a tea party; it is going to be a platform for unprecedented struggle, just as the deterioration has been unprecedented.

"We must specifically urge everyone of you to muster the courage, the stamina and the staying power to see this project through.

"We also must call on Nigerians to wake up to the fact that those who are the architects of this mess and its greatest beneficiaries are not going to give up easily; they will resist with all the weapons at their disposal.

"But this has always been the path of change throughout human history. Those struggling to free themselves from the shackles of oppression and bad governance should have nothing to fear, for, ultimately, it is always the truth that ultimately triumphs."

He said yesterday’s meeting was designed to propose the establishment of a steering committee to enhance the day-to-day running of the NDM.

"One other important assignment at this meeting today will be the formation of the two committees; one on ‘Contact and Mobilisation’ and the other on ‘Strategy and Programmes’.

"It is our plea that people so elected should endeavour to give their time, their energy and their talents to rescue this country from the precipice.

"This country has never been in need of our sacrifices like today; we must give our country the best. Our people have suffered for too long; they certainly deserve our best."

The meeting was attended by the three initiators of the NDM - Buhari, ex-Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Governor Attahiru Bafarawa – as well as many notable politicians across the parties.
