Need a guideline to write your proposal?

Here are guidelines for writing a computer science proposal for your final year project.

Note: Guidelines varies from school to school. (Ask your project supervisor for an outline)

A project topic proposal is an important part of writing your final year project. In most schools, you will be required to submit a project topic proposal to your supervisor before your topic gets approved. Knowing how to write a good project topic proposal will no doubt aid in getting your topic approved faster. The following sections should be included in your computer science project topic proposal's.

Motivation/Brief Background of Study
Statement of the Problem
Aims and Specific Objective of the study
Methodology/Approach/Tools
Anticipated Benefits


Motivation/Brief Background of Study

This is the foundation from which you got the idea to carry out the research.  The background should talk about the history behind the context of the project work. A topic such as "Design and Implementation of an online clearance system (a case study of Imo State University)", the background of the study should a brief history of the school.


Statement of the Problems

This section is where you will list out the problems identified in the current system. A brief introduction paragraph should be used to discuss the general problems encountered. Next, each problem should be outlined and explained.


Aims and Specific Objective of the Study

Provide specific goals expected to be achieved. It must be clear and unambiguous so that the achievements can be verified when attained.



Methodology/Approach/Tools

Here, you are expected to document the research methodology you will use and the particular techniques (interviews, questionnaire, observation) involved in the methodology to be used. The method can be either of:
i. Structured System Analysis and Design Methodology (SSADM)
ii. Prototyping
iii. Expert System Methodology
iv. Waterfall Methodology


Anticipated Benefits

Describe what the new or proposed system will be doing which the previous system was not able to do.
