My wife denies me sex since I married her, man tells court
on DECEMBER 9, 2011 · in NEWS

Lagos – A respondent in a divorce suit on Thursday told a customary court in Lagos that he always had to force himself on his wife for sex throughout their eight-year marriage.

“Ever since I started living with my wife, she denies me sex; I had to force myself on her before we had our four children,’’ Mr Chukwudi Obi submitted before a Grade “B” Customary Court in Oshodi.

Chukwudi was responding to a petition by his wife, Nkechinyere, seeking a court order to stop his alleged planned marriage to his girlfriend.

He told the court that Nkechinyere threatened to stab him with a knife in 2010 when he attempted to have sex with her.

“Since she started living with me in 2003, my wife would always find it difficult to have sex with me; I do not know what her problem is.

“Don`t you think it is strange to hear that we had our four children through the use of force? ”.

“When I saw that things were getting out of hand, I took her and the children to the village so that her parents could talk sense into her,’’Chukwudi submitted.

He said that he was ready for divorce because he was fed up with the segxwal starvation.

The respondent submitted that he would still be providing for the four children after divorce.

He denied an allegation by his wife that he abandoned his family because of his girlfriend.

“I did not abandon them as she said because I was sending her N10,000 on monthly basis to take care of the children; I have the tellers here,” he said.

The respondent tendered some bank deposit slips as evidence before the court.

Nkechinyere had alleged that Chukwudi abandoned her and the children because he was planning to marry his girlfriend on December 10.

The Court President, Alhaja A.I. Olorunimbe, ordered the respondent to continue to pay his wife N10,000 monthly for the children’s upkeep, pending the determination of the suit.

She ordered that the status quo be maintained, and enjoined the parents of both parties to explore means of resolving their conflicts.

The court president adjourned the case till Jan. 27, next year for report of settlement. (NAN)

No apologies over anti-gay marriage law –FG

The Federal Government, in response to President Barack Obama of the United States of America’s Presidential Memorandum directing “all federal agencies engaged abroad to ensure that U.S. diplomacy and foreign assistance promote and protect the human rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisegxwal, and Transgender (LGBT) persons”, has said that as an independent nation, it has no apologies for laws that preserve her values and culture.

Fielding questions from State House correspondents who sought to know if the issue came up in yesterday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC), the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku said, though it was still a proposed law that has only be considered by the Senate and yet to be considered by the House of Representstives, he insisted that Nigeria as an independent country, reserves the right to make laws without apologies to other countries. Adding “at any rate, between Europe, America and Africa there is a huge culture gap, some of the things that are considered fundamental rights abroad, also can be very offensive to African culture, tradition and to the way we live our lives here”.

Maku, who admitted some of the comments coming from foreign partners and friends are worrisome, added that though the President’s position will come if he assents to the law or not, added that “Nigeria’s democracy will be guarded by Nigeria’s interests and values” and that as “independent nation our legislature has the right to legislate and discuss any matter in the world that comes before them that is also in tune with the welfare of the people of Nigeria.”

According to Maku, “The reported comments by the US Government about the proposed law by the Senate about same sex marriage in Nigeria has not fully come to government for a position. But let me say this, we live in a democracy, we live in a free country, we live in an independent country. And in every democracy as you know, there are institutions, there are laws and also there are cultures, there are beliefs and values in every nation.

“Relating to the law that is being proposed by the Senate, as you know Senate has passed a version of a law relating to same sex marriages, that law has not yet gone through House of Representatives not to talk of becoming a law that will be forwarded to the President for assent.

“It is a process that is going on normally through the Nigeian legislature, the same way every law is passed in every democracy, we have not reached that point where it has become law. But even if it has become law, as you do know, Nigeria reserves the right as an independent nation to live under laws that are democratically passed by the National Assembly. If in the end it becomes law, it will become the law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, if the President assent to it, it will become law, if it doesn’t then if the National Assembly is able to muster two-third majority to pass it into law, it becomes law. But we are still far from what the Senate has done becoming law.

“Having said this, I believe our institutions are clear, we live in a democracy. Foreign countries that may not be happy with certain aspects of laws passed in Nigeria, are free to express their views concerning whatever law that is passed through the Nigerian legislature but at the same time all those countries know how democracies work.

“Like I said, the federal government has not yet come to a point of commenting on it because is a legislative process that pass through just one of the bi-cameral legislatures in Nigeria, if it eventually becomes law I’m sure the President will have a position on the matter. But until then, it is very premature for us to discuss what is still going on in the National Assembly.

“But let me make the point clear, our country is an independent country, we reserve the right to make our laws without apologies to other countries. But at any rate, between Europe, America and Africa there is a huge culture gap, some of the things that are considered fundamental rights abroad, also can be very offensive to African culture, tradition and to the way we live our lives here. I said this has not become a law, but sometimes we get worried by comments that are made.

The truth of the matter is, our democracy will be guarded by Nigeria’s interest and values. And if eventually the law becomes law, we will live with it but it is not yet law. And we will take comments by our foreign partners and friends as legitimate but I also know that it is with the legitimate rights of Nigeria as an independent nation and our legislature to legislate and discuss any matter in the world that comes before them that is also in tune with the welfare of the people of Nigeria,” he said.

9  Forum / The Buzz Central / NDLEA made me fish through excreta: BABA SUWE on: 14-11-2011 03:15 AM
Ace comedian Babatunde Omidina yesterday narrated how the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) made him fish through his excreta in search of alleged drugs.

Omidina, flanked by his lawyers, Bamidele Aturu and Ugwuzor Adindu, spoke in Lagos.

He said NDLEA officials gave him gloves to put on his hands and instructed him to be looking through his excreta for the narcotic substance they alleged he ingested each time he excreted.

Omidina, popular as Baba Suwe, said his arrest and detention by the NDLEA was a set up. He said the manner of his arrest made it clear that the NDLEA had been set up to arrest him before boarding the Air France flight that was supposed to take him to Paris to attend his engagement.

He said he has not even gone through the check-in processes when a woman accosted him and said,” you, you should go to the office of the NDLEA. You are wanted there”.

Omidina said immediately he stepped into the office of the agency at the airport, “they treated me like a common criminal. They arrested me and put leg-chains on me.”

Pointing out that he did not go under the scanning machine at the MMIA before his arrest, Omidina said that the first CT-Scan that the agency performed on him was on Friday, October 14 during which he said his system was flushed.

Omidina said a day before his release by the court on November 4, a tube was forced through his mouth and another through his anus. He said he was forced to take  six bottles of water while a pill was forced into his anus, all in bid to force him to digest the alleged narcotic substance.

Aturu declared the ace comedian a free man, pointing out that he no longer has any case to answer based on events that happened when they visited the office of the NDLEA at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja last Friday as ordered by a Lagos High Court Judge, Justice Yetunde Idowu.

Aturu and Omidina spoke in Lagos yesterday. Aturu said the NDLEA last Friday has returned everything that was seized from Omidina on the day of his arrest which included his luggage, necklace, three GSM handsets and unspecified amount of money.

“So, as I talk to you today, Mr. Omidina is a free man. He has no case to answer. The NDLEA has seen that it has no case against my client. That was why they returned all the things they took from him when he was arrested,” he said.

Aturu described the experience of his client in the detention of the NDLEA as a violation of his fundamental rights and his experience as intolerable.

He said the way the arrest of Omidina was carried out showed that there are  a lot of things wrong in the agency, saying “maybe their machines are obsolete or that the officials and their consultants are not capable enough to handle the job they are saddled with.”

He said some institutions, including Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), have to explain their roles in Omidina’s ordeal.

While stating that he does not encourage drug trafficking in any form, Aturu explained that it was high time agencies like NDLEA were made to stop violating the fundamental human rights of Nigerians.

11  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Jonathan: Achebe not in tune with reality on: 14-11-2011 01:34 AM
President Goodluck  Jonathan yesterday hit back at Prof. Chinua Achebe, saying his excuse for rejecting the national honour is not in tune with the current political reality in the country.

While admitting that there are still facing challenges, the President argued that the country cannot be said to be where it was in 2004.

But the President also said as regretable as Achebe’s decision is,  the literary giant remains an icon.

He urged the elderstateman to come back home and see for himself the progress being made by this administration.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President said his administration is developing the country.

The statement reads: “President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan regrets Prof. Chinua Achebe’s decision to reject, once again, the conferment on him of the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR). President Jonathan is also surprised by Prof. Achebe’s claim that the issues which caused him to reject the same award seven years ago, still remain unresolved.

“Coming as it does against the background of the widely acclaimed electoral reforms undertaken by the Jonathan Administration, the claim by Prof. Achebe clearly flies in the face of the reality of Nigeria’s current political situation. As reflected in the immense improvements recorded in the conduct of the last general elections which were applauded within and outside the country as the most credible elections in Nigeria in recent years, the Jonathan Administration has made tremendous efforts to positively change the political architecture complained about by Prof. Achebe and other Nigerians.

“Politically, Nigeria cannot be said to be where it was in 2004 as the Jonathan Administration has embarked on extensive electoral reforms to institute a regime of electoral integrity that all Nigerians can be proud of, believing that governance will be greatly enhanced in the country if the will of the people prevails at elections.

“While President Jonathan acknowledges that there are still challenges in the path of Nigeria’s attainment of its full potentials as a nation, he believes that his Administration is moving the country in the right direction and therefore deserves the support, encouragement and cooperation of all citizens.

“The President continues to hold Prof. Achebe in very high esteem in spite of his regrettable decision which may have been borne out of misinformation as to the true state of affairs in Nigeria and hopes that he will find time to visit home soon and see the progress being made by the Jonathan Administration for himself.

“Prof. Achebe remains in President Jonathan’s consideration a national icon, a Nigerian of high attainments, indeed one of the greatest living Africans of our time.”

Achebe was listed with other 364 Nigerians for national honours today.

In rejecting the honour, Achebe, in a short statement, said: “The reasons for rejecting the offer when it was first made have not been addressed, let alone solved. It is inappropriate to offer it again to me. I must therefore regretfully decline the offer again.”

Lagos begins free mental treatment

 News    Thursday, October 13, 2011

BY CHIOMA OBINNA & GABRIEL OLAWALE

IKEJA- THE Lagos State Government has developed a new mental health policy that would guarantee free treatment of mental disorders at all levels of care.

The policy which ensures comprehensive coverage of mental healthcare issues would be pursued through integration of mental healthcare services into Primary Healthcare.

At the launch of the policy in Lagos, as part of the commemoration of the 2011 World Mental Health Day, with the theme; "The Great Push, Investing in Mental Health, Visibility, Rights and Recovery", the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, said: "This policy is based on the national philosophy of social justice and equity, and it is hoped that full implementation will commence very shortly."

According to him, the objective of the State government is to sharpen the concept of recovery and define its principle features. "We will promote, implement, and adopt any appropriate and culturally acceptable method for bringing relief to those suffering from mental illness," he stated.

Giving insight into the policy, Idris said that apart from free treatment, persons with mental cases will be offered referral to specialist services for further assessment, treatment and care if they require.

He said: "Mental, neurological and substance abuse account for 14 per cent of the global burden of diseases and in Lagos alone, an average of 14 per cent of the total population suffer from one form of mental illness or the other. These illnesses may not necessarily be psychosis but untreated minor mental illnesses which affect the quality of life."

The policy will ensure that anyone who has attempted suicide has a mental health evaluation free of charge and also develop local systems for suicide audit to learn lessons and take necessary action.

Baby Etimbuk whose right arm was cut off by his half-brother, Nathaniel John, has successfully undergone a stump refashioning surgery.

The surgery which was performed on Friday lasted about five hours. PUNCH METRO learnt that the veins were realigned and subsequent areas that could cause injury or pains to him were removed.

Etimbuk is in the intensive care unit of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Etimbuk's mother, Mrs. Enobong John, who said she was short of words, thanked all Nigerians who stood by her and helped save her baby. "God bless them all," she simply said.

The Executive Director of UyaiIban Akwa Ibom (a ministry dedicated to the helping of children), Mrs. Favour Onobo, said the mother and child would remain in hospital for a long time as they would have to wait until the wound was healed.

She explained that apart from the N100,000 which the organisation through the help of members of the public, paid for the surgery, money was still needed to buy drugs and feed the baby and her mother.

Onobo, however, expressed her profound gratitude to those who assisted in paying the medical bills.

She said, "I know without you it wouldn't have been possible to give the boy a new life. I pray that the almighty God will reward you all abundantly. We trust God to see him through this critical period of his medication."

Nathaniel had on September 27, 2011, cut off Etimbuk's arm while the baby's mother was in the kitchen doing some chores.

Although Enobong hinted that Nathaniel could be suffering from mental illness due to his antecedents, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Onyeka Orji, who described the act as a "serious criminal act," said a thorough investigation would be carried out to determine the mental state of the accused person.

The Nigerian entertainment industry was agog some days ago when words got out that beautiful singer, Mo’Chedda had her Nood picture splashed on networking site, twitter.

Mo'chedda
The news drew many of her fans to the internet, who were surprised as they beheld the Nood picture of a young lady believed to have been the singer on the web page and it attracted an outpouring of criticisms on the teenage singer.

The teenage singer who was said to have been away to India was alleged to have earlier tweeted that the Nood picture was not her handiwork claiming someone hacked into her account before she later defended herself that she wasn’t the girl in the picture.

The UNILAG undergraduate, who took the music stage by storm when she released some hit tracks is the darling of many young music lover in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

The Nood picture, which had a sharp resemblance to her (comparing her body frame) did not capture the face of the Nood lady but many people that viewed the site claimed it was the singer.

The Nood picture has generated a furore which can only be cleared by the young singer upon her return from where she is at the moment.

Boko Haram splits •Faction promises ceasefire during Ramadan •Jonathan, Northern leaders parley over sect

 Thursday, 21 July 2011

THE outlawed Islamic group, Boko Haram, which has been terrorising Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, has split into two, with the Yusufiyya Islamic Movement (YIM), condemning the attacks and bombings of residences and places of worship by the other faction of Islamic sect that claimed to be fighting a Jihad  in the North.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that the split of the Boko Haram was contained in a two-page unsigned leaflets distributed on Tuesday to the various wards, Post Office Area and media houses in Maiduguri.

The leaflets read in part: “The Yusufiyya Movement has come to mean different things to different people in the last few months. This confusion and misinterpretation have made it necessary for us to come out publicly with the clear truth with regard to our concept, struggle, aim and ultimate objective,” stating that, “its declaration would guide in distinguishing the Yusufiyya movement from the various labels ascribed to us, as the Boko Haram.

“This is necessary in the light of genuine concern by individuals and groups to the mass suffering of innocent citizens caught in the crossfire between our members and the Nigerian troops. This concern has again brought to the fore, the daunting issue of reconciliation through dialogue with the Nigerian authorities and individual leaders involved in the naked abuse of our birthright to the peaceful propagation and practice of our religion as we understand it.”

This misunderstanding, according to the statement, led to the killing of its leader, Mohammed Yusuf, and the destruction and confiscation of its landed and moveable property in Maiduguri. The group, therefore, resolved to wage a struggle between justice and injustice, between truth and falsehood, right against wrong, in which the sect was sure of victory.

The statement, however, noted that the public must know that the Yusufiyya Islamic  sect is far from the image of the heartless terrorists, arsonists or sadistic robbers painted by other people with a distinct agenda. “It is, therefore, unbecoming to attribute attacks on the civilian population or places of worship to our group, the Yusufiyya Islamic Sect.” While reiterating the factions in Boko Haram, the statement further explained that; “ours is a clear fight for the blood of our founder, Mohammed Yusuf, and other leaders who were slain in cold blood.

“We, therefore, distance our group from all the bombings targeted at civilians and other establishments and equally condemn them and pray that Allah  expose those who perpetrated them and attributed them to us.

“We are concerned that some people with evil motives have infiltrated our genuine struggle with a false holy war that is outright un-Islamic. We call this evil group to desist, failing which we shall have no option but to expose and hunt them. Finally, we have resolved to temporarily halt our fight against the assassination of our leaders in compliance with the prohibition of fighting in the holy month of Ramadan.”

The Joint Security Task Force (JTF) spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Hassan Mohammed, confirmed the release and distribution of the leaflets on the Boko Haram factions and temporary ceasefire in Borno  State.

According to him, “The JTF is on top of the security situation in Borno State. The factions being created in the Boko Haram sect and the temporary ceasefire from the Yusuffiyya Islamic sect could bring peace and the restoration of law and order by nipping all acts of terrorism by the other factions of Boko Haram sect.”

Speaking on the alleged excesses of soldiers in fighting terrorism and other acts of violence, Mohammed said: “We are here in Borno to restore law and order and not to intimidate or harass any resident of the affected wards in Maiduguri metropolis.”

He said terrorism was the enemy of the entire world, including the killings and bombings of Maiduguri residents and their places of worship, adding that if the people could not live in peace without the protection of their life and property, soldiers would not have a place or relevance in any democratically run country, like Nigeria, as Nigerian soldiers, according to him, were learned and civilised professionals that were in Borno State to protect the life and property of the people.

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan, on Wednesday, held consultations with northern leaders over the activities of the Boko Haram  Islamic  sect at the end of which they resolved that it would be premature to withdraw the military from Borno State.

Those who met with the president in House Seven of the Presidential Villa, Abuja included Borno elders, North-East Elders and Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), led by its Board of Trustees chairman, General Jerry Useni.

Also in attendance at the meeting were Vice-President Namadi Sambo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim; Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice,  Mohammed Bello Adoke; Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Oluseyi Petinrin; National Security Adviser (NSA), General Owoeye Azazi; the Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, and the Minister of State for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Alhaji Bukar Tijjani.

Prominent Borno personalities at the meeting were Senator Ali Ndume, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe; Ambassador Usman Galtimari; Bulawa Maligubio, Senator Ma'aji Lawal, Bunu Sheriff; Muhammad Goni; Brigadier-General Abba Kyari, Ambassador Hamza Yarima and Ahmed Gazali.

According to the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, who spoke to State House correspondents after the meeting, the military would remain in the trouble spot while its authorities would deal with individual cases of excesses by its personnel.

He said: “There were broad-based consultations about the outcry for the withdrawal of the military. But in the light of this discussion, the meeting generally agreed that it is premature to withdraw the military.

“What was needed was that if there are cases of individual misbehaviour by members of the Joint Task Force, the authorities will look into those cases.

“And right now, we know one or two soldiers who were found to have done things in excess are being questioned by the relevant authorities,” he said.

Maku said the meeting was broadly attended by political leaders, saying that “it explored different options, consulted widely on what we can do together to bring about peace and security in Borno State and other affected areas.”

Furthermore, the government’s spokesman stressed the need for all hands to be on deck, saying that political leaders, community leaders, traditional leaders and religious leaders must work together to find a lasting solution to the problem.
