Police arrest woman smuggling rifles in maize

Police have arrested a woman on suspicion of trying to smuggle assault rifles hidden in sacks of maize from neighbouring Chad to help arm a radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

The 37-year-old mother of seven was caught in possession of ten AK-47 rifles hidden in the sacks after travelling by boat across Lake Chad, which sits on Nigeria's remote northeastern border with Chad and Cameroon, police said.

"The illegal arms were concealed but recovered inside four bags of maize," Mohamed Jinjiri Abubakar, the Police Commissioner for Borno State, told Reuters. "Available information suggests the suspect arrested was behind the aiding of religious fundamentalists unleashing terror on innocent civilians in Borno."

Boko Haram, a radical Islamic sect behind an uprising last year which led to clashes in which hundreds died, has been blamed for torching police stations and fatal sniper attacks on police officers and local leaders in Borno in recent weeks.
Local authorities have long said Boko Haram is supported by members from neighbouring countries. Hundreds of immigrants have been deported back to Chad, Cameroon and Niger as part of a security crackdown.

It is unclear how many followers Boko Haram has, but poverty, unemployment and a lack of education have meant its leaders have managed to build a cult-like following which is as much violently anti-establishment as fervently religious.

Its views are not espoused by the vast majority of Nigeria's Muslim population, the largest in sub-Saharan Africa.

Nigeria Now Imports Banana

The influx of imported banana into the country is posing a threat to the livelihood  of local banana farmers and traders.
An investigation by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday showed  that the foreign banana which is increasingly gaining a foothold in Abuja, is  imported from Cameroon and Togo.
Sellers and buyers who spoke to NAN attributed the high patronage, in spite of its  cost, to the fresh appearance, smooth skin, size and taste.
The investigation showed that the commodity is being sold at strategic locations  such as banks, shopping plazas and fruit markets, among other public places.
Ibrahim Ahmed, who sells the fruit in front of Basam Plaza where the ANPP  Secretariat is located in the Central Business District, told NAN that the imported  banana sold faster, compared to the local variety.
He said that a bunch of five fingers costs N200 as against N70 for the local  variety.
Mama Ali, another seller by Ahmadu Coommassie House also in the Central Business  District, corroborated Ahmeds views.
Ali said that the banana arrives here unripe but the way it is stored in the cold  warehouse and its unique taste makes it very appealing to buyers.
Malam Zakari Yau who sells fruits at the Maitama Fruit Market, said the foreign  banana could stay for three weeks before being declared unfit for human consumption.
Yau also agreed that imported banana attracted more patronage than the local ones.
He, however, said that the development posed a serious threat to the local banana  industry and the entire economy.
He called on the government to stop the people responsible for the banana imports to  enable the local ones make the desired impact.
What does it take for a government to get the specie of this kind of banana into  the country and empower the unemployed to go back to farm so that we produce it  instead of importing? he asked.
Yau, who has a masters degree in Economics, said it was the same variety that Shonga  Farms in Kwara State produced but not enough for export.
He appealed to the three tiers of government to as a matter of urgency, provide all  that it takes to reduce unemployment and produce sufficient food for the people.
When NAN visited the Mararraba Orange Market where the warehouse is located, the  director was said to be out of town on official assignment.
At the market, one of the labourers, Mal Iliya Dan Azumi told NAN that he and his  colleagues used to offload at least 11 articulated vehicles of the imported banana  daily.
He said vehicles came from Togo and Cameroon, adding that buyers came from Kogi,  Niger, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Plateau states.
One of the customers, Nana Ilya, also said she was content with the N2,500 to N3,000  profit she made from the sale of the foreign banana in three days.
Margret Timothy who resides in Karu area of Abuja, said she preferred to buy the  foreign banana than the local ones because imported banana had a longer shelf life.
Yusuf Lawal, a civil servant living in Jikoyi area, said the imported banana was  very good to his body system, adding that it helped him clean his bowel every  morning.
Anytime I take it after my meal in the evening, I empty my bowel in the morning and  start the day very fresh, he said.
Mr Nicholas Jack, an agricultural engineer with Embee Farms in Kaduna, expressed  regret that in spite of the vast agricultural land, Nigeria was still importing  fruits after 50 years of nationhood.
Sometimes, I feel like crying for this country; just imagine, other countries came  here to learn.
A few years later, they took the lead; what is our problem? he asked, adding:Our  leaders should fear God and do what is right.
3  Forum / Politics / Is Nigeria's President, Yaradua; Dead or Alive? on: 29-12-2009 06:52 PM
I woke up this morning to read with dismay that President Umar Musa Yaradua has signed the supplementary budget into law, how are we sure he is the person that signed it? What if, If the signature was forged?
There so many questions that are yet to be unanswered about the status of President Yaradua!

Quote
Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu yesterday said that President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has signed the N353.60 billion 2009 Supplementary budget into law. THISDAY had exclusively reported yesterday that the President would assent to the bill in Saudi Arabia. The President is currently recuperating from a heart condition at the King Faisal Specialist and Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The signing of the budget has prevented a veto override (as prescribed in Section 59(4) of the 1999 Constitution) that would have taken place if the document was not signed within 30 days of transmission to him for assent. The House of Represen-tatives had passed the Supple-mentary Appropriation bill on November 18 while the Senate concurred on November 24. Acting Clerk of the National Assembly, Prince Oluyemi Ogunyomi, had transmitted a clean copy of the bill to the Presidency on November 29. But amid the confusion over the budget, December 8 and 10 were bandied around as the transmission dates of the clean copy of the budget.

I am really confused if our president is alive or dead, all we are been told is that he his sick, Nigeria a Nation of about 150million people without a Leader is disturbing.
Compare to Fidel castrol who was sick and there was always pictures of him talking from the sick bed,
why cant we as Nigerians get to see a picture of our "sick president"?
Why wont he send the nation a video or radio feed of him on the sick bed?
How are we sure the Northern elite and the Nigerian mafia is not playing politics with our destiny?

We really need answers and as long as we dont get it, the destiny of Nigeira continues to be in Limbo!

I wait to see if we will enter the New year without knowing the status of our President!

New Detroit scare declared 'non-serious'
Update
Quote
(CNN) -- The security alert aboard a Northwest Airlines jet Sunday was the result of a "non-serious" incident, and the man questioned in connection with the scare does not appear to be a threat, a law enforcement source said Sunday.

The crew of Northwest Flight 253 -- the same Amsterdam, Netherlands-to-Detroit, Michigan flight targeted Friday in what prosecutors called a bomb plot -- reported a "verbally disruptive" passenger Sunday and requested police meet the plane, airline and airport officials told CNN. The man was questioned by police after the plane landed in Detroit early Sunday afternoon.

The passenger spent about an hour in the bathroom and got upset when he was questioned by the crew of the flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, according to government sources. Law enforcement agents were questioning the man Sunday.

The jet had the same designation -- Flight 253 -- as the one on which a Nigerian man is accused of attempting to set off an explosive device Friday, said Scott Wintner, a spokesman for the Wayne County Airport Authority. Winter told CNN the flight "requested emergency assistance and was pulled aside upon arrival in Detroit."

The jet was taken a long distance from the terminal and "completely engulfed" by emergency vehicles and heavily armed police once it landed, said Don Graham, who was waiting for relatives to arrive at the airport.

The flight arrived about 12:34 p.m., said Susan Elliott, a spokeswoman for Delta Air Lines, which owns Northwest. The 257 passengers were allowed to leave the aircraft about an hour after the jet landed, she said.

Ex-First Bank Chairman's Son Identified as US Plane Attempted Bomber
• Father reported him to US Authorities long few months ago

The young man, who yesterday night attempted to ignite an explosive device aboard a North-West Airlines flight going from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan in the United States has been identified as Abdul Farouk Umar Abdulmutallab, the 23-year-old son of Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, former First Bank chairman, who just retired from the bank's board a fortnight ago.

The older Mutallab, who as at the time of filing this report, had just left his Katsina hometown for Abuja for the purpose of speaking with security agencies, was said to have noticed the extreme nature of the boy's religious belief and has taken several measures to tame him.

In fact, the former bank chairman, a close source told THISDAY, had a few months ago reported the boy's activities to United States' authorities and Nigerian security agencies.

The older Mutallab was said to be devastated on hearing the news of abdullFarouk's arrest. A source close to him said he was surprised that after his reports to the US authorities, the young man was still issued a visa to enter the United States.

The suspect, Abdulfarouk Muttalab who is an engineering student at the University College, London had been noted for his extreme views on religion since his secondary school days at the British International School, Lome, Togo.

At the secondary school, he was known for preaching about Islam to his school mates and he qwas popularly called ëAlfaí , a local coinage for Islamic scholar. After his secondary school, the young man, family sources said, once relocated to Dubai in  the United Arab Emirates from where he declared to his family members that he did not want to have anything to do with any of them again.

His father, Muttalab is a prominent Nigerian who is a regular visitor to the US where he visits for medical check up and holiday. He is expected to issue a statement later today. Muttalab is married to a Yemeni who however is not the mother of the young man now receiving treatment in Ann Harbor Hospital, Detroit  for burns suffered while he was trying to detonate the expolosive device.

Meanwhile, the federal government of Nigeria yesterday issued a press statement on the incident.
The statement signed by Prof. Dora Akunyili, minister of information and communications, reads:  " Federal Government of Nigeria received with dismay the news of an attempted terrorist attack on a US airline. We state very clearly that as a nation, we abhor all forms of terrorism. The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck

ROMULUS, Mich. - A Nigerian man claiming ties to al-Qaida tried to light a powder aboard a commercial jetliner before it landed Friday in Detroit in what senior U.S. officials called an attempted act of terrorism.

“He appears to have had some kind of incendiary device he tried to ignite,” a senior U.S. official told NBC News. Other officials said the explosive device was a mixture of powder and liquid, which failed when the passenger tried to detonate it during the plane’s descent into Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.

Two people noticed the attempted attack, and a third person jumped on the man and subdued him, an airline official told NBC News. The man was being treated at the burn unit of the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, officials said.

Eagles to battle Argentine in South Africa 2010

The 2010 World Cup draws took place in Cape Town, South Africa, Friday, before a world live and television audience of close to 200 million people with Nigeria, for the third time in 15 years, facing Argentina in Group B.

After a colourful ceremony which started with a recorded message from South Africa’s 91 year old former president, Nelson Mandela and a welcome by President Jacob Zuma and FIFA president, Joseph Sepp Blatter, the draw proper started with FIFA secretary general, Jerome Valcke conducting affairs.

Ethiopian legend, Haile Gebrselassie made the first pick from pot three and it turned out to be Nigeria but with Valcke saying that two African teams could not be in the same group, Nigeria had to automatically move to Group B where Argentina seeded in the group will play the opening match with the Super Eagles.

Moments after the draw, Super Eagles coach, Shaibu Amodu told Supersports that he and his wards will not pay any special focus on Argentina because other teams in the group, Greece and South Korea are equally strong.

“I don’t want to focus on Argentina because other teams in the group are equally strong. We have to prepare well for all the teams and I think it will be nice to start well with Argentina,” Amodu said.

Continuing Amodu, who the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF has pledged total support for on the Eagles job told his interviewers that “It is possible to beat Argentina, they are beatable but it depends on how we prepare.”

Pressed to say how good his team is, Amodu quipped “I think the Eagles we are building now can come out of the group and possibly get to the quarter finals or semi finals.”

This will be the third time in World Cup history that both countries will be meeting each other in the same group. In Nigeria’s debut appearance in 1994 in the United States, Argentina, parading the great Diego Maradona, beat Nigeria 2-1 but the Clemens Westerhof-tutored side still went ahead to qualify for the second round.

Again in 2002 in Korea/Japan after Amodu was shoved aside for Chief Adegboye Onigbinde, the Eagles comprising rooky players like Femi Opabunmi and Barthlomew Ogbechie, stretched the former world champions to breaking point before the much more experienced Argentines drew from their bag of football tricks to pip the Nigerian side 1-0.

After the 1994 loss in the USA, Nigeria were pitched again with Argentina in the final of the Atlanta ‘96 Olympic Games football event where Nwankwo Kanu inspired his team mates to beat Argentina 3-2 for Africa’s first Olympic gold in football.

Nine years after the Olympic loss, Argentina took their revenge at the U-20 level in the Netherlands when Lionel Messi, re-enacting the Maradona prowess singlehandedly tore the Flying Eagles defence to help his country to the FIFA U-20 Wrld Cup crown, winning 2-1.

Again in 2008 at the Beijing Olympics, Samson Siasia who was in-charge in 2005 in the Netherlands had the ill-luck of confronting the same Argentina team with Messi supported by Sergio Aguero, a son-in-law of Maradona in the final of the football event and lost 1-0 to pick the gold.

Recalling the 1994 loss, Super Eagles assistant coach, Daniel Amokachi who was part of the USA’94 squad said after the draws yesterday that “we lost 2-1 to Argentina, a defeat we caused for ourselves”, but added that for the other group opponent, Greece who they equally met in 19994, “we beat Greece 2-0 in 1994 but football has really changed in that country now.”

Greece shocked the whole world in 2004 in Portugal when they beat stronger teams to emerge the European champions but in last year’s edition of the same championship, they were a shadow of themselves.

In the other pairings for the 2010 World Cup, host South Africa have a tough opening match with Mexico in Group A which also has Uruguay and France whose qualification is smeared in a Henry Thierry ‘hand of God’ assist that gave them the ticket.

England that have been rebuilt by Italian coach, Fabio Capello are in Group C with USA, Algeria and Slovenia while Africa’s first 2010 qualifier, Ghana are in Group D with Germany, Australia and Serbia. Group E has the Netherlands, Denmark, Japan and Cameroon.

The mot successful World Cup country, Brazil are grouped in G alongside North Korea, Cote d’Ivoire and Portugal while current European champions, Spain will test their might against rising football country, Switzerland, Honduras and Chile.

Respected former South Africa president, Nelson Madiba Mandela said South Africa is “privileged and humbled” to be staging football’s greatest event, the Fifa World Cup in 2010.

According to him, “Sport has the power to inspire and unite people. In Africa, soccer enjoys great popularity and has a particular place in the hearts of people, which is why it is so important that the Fifa World Cup will, for the first time ever, be hosted on the African continent in 2010.”

“We feel privileged and humbled that South Africa has been given this singular honour of being the African host country. We must strive for excellence in our hosting of the World Cup, while at the same time, ensuring that we are going to leave a lasting benefit to all our people.

“The people of Africa learnt the lesson of patience and endurance in their long struggle for freedom. May the reward brought by the FIFA World Cup prove that the long wait for its arrival on African soil has been worth it… Ke Nako! It’s time.”

The groups tables are as follows

Group A – South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay and France

Group B – Argentina, Nigeria, Korea Republic and Greece

Group C – England, USA, Algeria and Slovenia

Group D – Germany, Australia, Serbia and Ghana

Group E – Netherlands, Denmark, Japan and Cameroon

Group F – Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand and Slovakia

Group G – Brazil, Korea DPR, Cote d’Ivoire and Portugal

Group H – Spain, Switzerland, Honduras and Chile

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will play Argentina in the opening match.

11  Forum / Politics / "NigComSat" Nigeria satelite (made in China) to be destroyed, not fully insured! on: 17-11-2008 02:01 PM
The Federal Government will this week begin investigations to confirm if its damaged N12 billion communication satellite was underinsured by as much as N8 billion, it was learnt at the weekend.

Besides, foreign intelligence sources are worried over what may have caused the failure of the Nigerian satellite, barely 18 months after launch.

The worries in global intelligence circles are predicated on what the future holds for the safety of more expensive and strategic satellites worldwide, if the Nigerian satellite is discovered to have been downed following an erroneous or malicious programming code sent from its ground control station in Abuja.

The Nation also gathered from official sources in Lagos and Abuja that the NigComSat 1 Satellite, may also have been under-insured in error, as officials exchanged memos at the expiration of the tenure of the satellite’s first year’s insurance five months ago. But details are still sketchy. Officials said the government would definitely address the media on the issue in the next few days.

The Managing Director of NigComSat Limited, managers of the satellite, Mr. Ahmed Rufai, at the weekend only said "the Satellite was fully insured." But industry sources knowledgeable in such matters hinted that the issue was more complex. Their claim is that the specific terms of insurance stated by the broker is what matters in the case of high technology equipment such as that of the now damaged satellite.

The insurers of the Satellite or the brokers have not yet been revealed by the government. But industry experts fear that specific insurance details, which may have left out the ground control station in Abuja out of the insurance cover, in a cost-cutting measure, may have unwittingly caused a lower valuation for the satellite itself.

The contention is that the original valuation for the insurance cover for the Satellite and the ground control station was said to have been in excess of more than $180 million, with an insurance premium hovering between $30 million and N54 million, but that as a cost-cutting measure, a lower valuation was submitted to reduce the premium that would have been paid.

It was not clear at the weekend if the charges schemed off the original value that was to have been insured, left the value of the satellite intact.

Nigeria spent almost $300 million on communication Satellite acquisition, launch, training and the construction of a ground control station in Abuja. The Satellite alone, cost about $102 million and The Nation gathered that the details of the insured items and insurance terms as submitted by the broker and accepted by the insuring firm determine the level of compensation.

The NigComSat Satellite 1 switched to its night-mode batteries as the sun set in Space late last Sunday, as it was supposed to do, but failed to switch back to its primary solar power source, when the Sun came up.

It, instead, continued running on batteries. In Space, Satellites derive their electric power mostly from solar panels, which in daytime power the Satellites themselves, while also charging batteries that provide power during the night. After two days of continuous operation on its batteries, the managers of Satellite had to shut it down to retain some amount of electric power that will now be needed to send down the Satellite back to Earth where it will be destroyed by a combination of gravity and pressure as it re-enters the Earth.

Though it cost more than N12 billion, the Nigerian Satellite is not expensive enough to command the near $200 million that NASA says Satellite repairs in space cost. Unlike many multi-billion dollar American Satellites and other space-based equipment which astronauts, cosmonauts and robots are sent to space to repair, the Nigerian Satellite which has now been confirmed to have totally lost its ability to generate its own power in Space, will have to be brought back to earth and be destroyed in the process.

The Satellite was not expected to have any serious malfunction until it has reached year 10 of its 18-year life span.

Chavez Inspires Million-Dollar Insult

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has never been afraid to heap insults on his rivals, from dismissing George W. Bush as "the devil" to labeling former Spanish President Jose Maria Aznar a "fascist." So it must be all the more galling for the self-styled martyr to learn that his bitter enemy King Juan Carlos of Spain may have generated some $2 million in ringtone sales, simply on the basis of one near-legendary riposte: "Why don't you shut up?"

The king's million-dollar insult was directed at Chavez at the Ibero-American summit in Chile last week, and since then entrepreneurs have been cashing in on its popularity. The Spanish phrase " por que no te callas?" is now a ringtone, a Facebook group, a YouTube clip and will eventually become a Web site. Type in www.porquenotecallas.com into any Web browser and you will end up at an eBay auction offering the domain name for over 10,000 euros ($14,657.65).

According to British newspaper The Guardian, an estimated 500,000 people have already downloaded the ringtone, which represents some 1.5 million euros ($2.2 million) in sales.

Political ringtones are big business, especially with mobile phones being the primary communication tool for the key youth demographics. Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama offers a variety of ringtones on his campaign Web site, from "End The War" to the less catchy "On Healthcare." And back in June, a British ringtone service offered its services to British premier Gordon Brown, "to win over politically apathetic 18-24-year-olds."

But as with Chavez and his royal foe, the most infamous political ringtones are unplanned and controversial. In 2005, recordings of alleged vote-rigging conversations between Filipino President Gloria Arroyo and an electoral official she supposedly addressed as "Garci" brought mobile phones to life across the Philippines.

"They are quite common in a few markets," said Jonathan Arber, analyst with Ovum Research, citing emerging markets in Asia. He estimated the global ringtone market at over $5 billion in 2007, but said that growth would tail off after 2009, as services such as mobile music eroded sales at ringtone-specific businesses.

No doubt Chavez would dismiss the whole enterprise as "the road to hell"--his metaphor for capitalism--but perhaps he may be less displeased if one of his insults ever tops the million-dollar mark.

WBC declares Peter as new heavyweight champion

Nigeria has produced the first Africa World heavyweightboxing champion, as World Boxing Council (WBC) named "The Nigerian Nightmare" Samuel Peter as their new heavyweight champion of the world, following the inability of the incumbent, Oleg Maskaev to defend his title against the mandatory challenger.

Maskaev, who is from Kazakhstan, claimed to have suffered a multiple disc herniation injury, which will provoke his being inactive, at least for the next 3 or 4 months according to his lawyer, which would lead this division to 14 months without activity. Consequently, his fight against official challenger, Samuel Peter from Nigeria, scheduled for October 6, at Madison Square Garden, will not take place.

To avoid the fact that the WBC Heavyweight division remains frozen, the WBC Board of Governors conclusively voted to name the Nigerian boxer, Samuel Peter as the WBC Heavyweight interim world champion, citing relevant rules to justify the decision.

Rules 1.26 (4) and 1.27 of the WBC Rules and Regulations explicitly allows the WBC, in an instance where an interim title is applicable, to recognize as interim champion, the winner of a previous elimination fight. Samuel Peter won not only one, but two final elimination bouts in a row against James Toney in September 2006, and in January 2007.

Rules 1.26 and 1.27 read: 1.26 Vacant Title. If a title becomes vacant for any reason, the Board of Governors may in its discretion take whatever steps or actions it deems necessary or appropriate to fill the title, including but not limited to:

1) Authorize and cause to be instituted a tournament or elimination contest among leading available contenders in the division of the vacant title, with the winner being recognized as the new champion;

Or 2) authorize or cause to be instituted a direct bout between the two highest rated available boxers and recognize the winner as the champion;

Or 3) appoint as challenger, the champion of a lower or higher division to contend against the highest rated available boxer of the division for the vacant title;

Or 4) recognize as champion, the winner of a previous elimination bout. This list is non-exclusive.

The Board of Governors may impose such conditions as it deems proper and necessary in its discretion upon the new champion winning a vacant title, including but not limited to:

1) Designating the boxer against whom the first defense of the title must be made (who may be selected from the highest rated available boxers or a boxer selected through a final elimination bout);

2) Ordering the new champion to make his first mandatory defense within 90 to 120 days of acquiring the title;

3) If requested and feasible, to approve one voluntary defense, with the condition that the winner must meet his official mandatory challenger next. This list is also non-exclusive.

1.27 Interim Championship. The WBC may order an interim title bout when a world champion will be temporarily inactive and unable to defend his title for a period to exceed 6 months due to:

a) certified medical reasons

b) a legal impediment

c) a reasonable cause strictly beyond his control.

In ordering the interim championship, the WBC will follow any of the steps mandated in Rule 1.26. If the inactivity is estimated to exceed one (1) year, the title shall be declared vacant.

Upon the return of the champion, the WBC will order a mandatory bout for the undisputed WBC title with the interim champion. Both boxers are bound to participate in this bout and cannot participate in an intervening contest, except in special circumstances approved by a majority vote of the Board of Governors.

If the bout is promoted through purse offer procedures, the purse split will be 55 per cent for the champion and 45 per cent for the interim champion. The WBC may alter this split at its discretion pursuant to the provisions of Rule 2.11(d).

If the champion does not return after a year of inactivity, he will forfeit the title to the interim champion, who will automatically become the undisputed WBC champion.

The World Boxing Council will present interim world champion Samuel Peter his WBC interim world champion title in a couple of days.

Mourinho leaves Chelsea after crisis meeting, Was he SACKED or Did He Resign?

Chelsea have confirmed that manager Jose Mourinho has left the Stamford Bridge club by 'mutual consent' after three trophy-laden years at the helm.

He is understood to have contacted five senior players yesterday afternoon to inform them of his departure and by midnight the entire first team squad had learned he was going.

Peter Kenyon, the club's chief executive, Bruce Buck, the chairman, and Abramovich's key aide, Eugene Tenenbaum, were called to an emergency meeting at Stamford Bridge last night to discuss the emerging crisis.

The club eventually confirmed Mourinho's departure in the early hours of this morning when they posted a statement on the club's official website.

The statement read: 'Chelsea Football Club and Jose Mourinho have agreed to part company today (Thursday) by mutual consent.'

Many of Chelsea's staff and players had been enjoying a relaxing evening at a Fulham Broadway cinema last night as they watched a screening of `Blue Revolution'` - a new documentary about the Abramovich years.

But senior players like captain John Terry and England midfielder Frank Lampard were absent and the remainder, except a reluctant England winger Shaun Wright-Phillips, refused to talk to the media.

Mourinho also attended the evening but ignored the waiting media and looked decidedly glum.

Former Chelsea player Didier Deschamps has emerged as one of the frontrunners to replace Jose Mourinho as manager at Stamford Bridge.

Deschamps, who captained France to glory in the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, is now one of the names in the frame to replace Mourinho.

Deschamps began his coaching career with Monaco before joining Juventus. But he resigned from the Italian club in May 2007 and is currently unemployed.

He spent a year with Chelsea as a player in 1999-2000 - winning the FA Cup.

It is understood the impasse between Mourinho and Abramovich came to a head after their 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa earlier this month.

Mourinho has been at loggerheads with the Russian since their disagreement over the lack of funds to sign players during last January's transfer window.

Mourinho's reluctance to play Andriy Shevchenko and the Russian's desire to bring in Avram Grant from Portsmouth to work with the misfiring striker only served to heighten the tension.

The former Israel coach was recruited in the summer as director of football and Mourinho is understood to have simmered ever since.

Now Grant is expected to be in charge for Sunday's clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Mourinho's departure will be followed by his backroom staff although assistant Steve Clarke is expected to remain on the payroll for now.

The Portuguese - whose £5.2 million a year contract was due to expire in 2010 - has been dismayed by the constant watering down of his authority.

Abramovich's decision to recruit Dane Frank Arnesen from Tottenham as director of scouting and youth development in September 2005 was compounded further by the arrival of Grant.

But their dismal start to the new Barclays Premier League campaign and their 1-1 draw with Rosenborg in the Champions League on Tuesday only served to heighten the problems and Mourinho decided he had reached the end of the road.

He had won every domestic honour since his arrival in England in the summer of 2004 but the Champions League eluded him.

Although he won the trophy with Porto in 2003, Chelsea were twice knocked out of the competition at the semi-final stage by Liverpool during his tenure.
