Two unidentified evil men unleashed cruelty on the family of one Mutiu Nurein, over the weekend in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, killing five children.

The unidentified men waited for Nurein and his wives to leave home for the day’s business and hoarded his six children into the booth of the man’s parked car and disappeared, leaving five of the kids to suffocate, while the sixth survived by the whiskers.

The horrific incident, which occurred at Ureje Quarters of Ado Ekiti town last Saturday led to the death of Simbiat, Delilat, Kafayat, Khadijat and Safiyat, all children of Nurein, who were at home alone on the fateful day, waiting for their parents to come back in the evening after the day’s business as usual.

However, while the kids were waiting expectantly for the return of their parents, two unidentified men paid them unholy visit and ordered them into the booth of their father’s Mercedes Benz 190 car parked by the building.
The six kids were forced to lie on one another in the choky booth, and the evil men closed the lid on them.

In the evening when the mothers of the kids returned, they did not find their girls at home. Believing that the children had gone to the neighbourhood to play. They waited for them to come back home, but when it was getting too dark, they went to where the kids usually played, but could not find them.

Searching everywhere possible, suddenly one of the mothers noticed the back door of the Benz car open with the inner light on and made for the car only to hear a slight knock coming from the booth of the car. With axe and other objects, the booth was forced to open and behold, all the six girls were piled upon one another with only Rashidat, 7, panting for fresh air.

A great tumult and wailing followed the evacuation of the remaining five who were stone dead.
The first wife, Mulikat, lost four, while the younger wife, Oja, lost two to the dastardly act.
Rashidat, who is being guarded by policemen at the State Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti where she is being treated, revealed that two men came into the family home shortly after their father, a butcher, left home for Jebba, Kwara State, to buy cows.
She said the men asked her and her siblings to enter into the car booth with their faces covered and they were locked in.

In his account, the bereaved father, Mutiu Nurein, revealed that he left home around 11a.m on the fateful day to buy cows in Jebba only to be informed later in the evening that his kids had been murdered mysteriously by some assailants.
Thirty-five-year-old Mutiu, who sells cow meat in the Okebola Area of Ado-Ekiti, could not phantom the source of the attack on his family when he spoke to Daily Sun at the Ado-Ekiti police command, Oke-Isa.

He denied engaging in any shady deal with anyone, which could have prompted such attack. His father, Pa Okunola Nureni, described his son as an easy going person who could not delve into any questionable business with anyone.
The youngest among the dead kids was three years old and their remains have been deposited at the state mortuary.

A visit to the police station at Odo-Ado in which jurisdiction the scene of the incident falls, the Divisional Police Officer confirmed the tragedy, but said the case had been transferred to Ekiti State Police Headquarters for further investigation.

46  Forum / Politics / Ribadu forced out of NIPSS graduation and arrested on: 23-11-2008 09:29 PM
FORMER Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu's dream of graduating from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, on the completion of his course was yesterday dasThe whereabouts of Ribadu who was forced out of the graduation hall by heavily armed security agents remained uncertain last night.
His wife, children and other close associates who had come to rejoice with him were also sent out by the security men.
Both Chief Gani Fawehimi and Mr. Femi Falana have criticised the physical removal of Ribadu from the graduation describing it as “most disheartening, absolutely bizarre and unprecedentedly barbaric”
Also barred from graduating was Deinbo Allen Briggs, a participant alleged to have stolen a digital camera belonging to another participant in far away China in October.
Sixty three other graduates could not also be inducted into the prestigious institute's hall of fame as Member National Institute (MNI), for the first time in the institute's 30 year history.
Before he was forced out, Ribadu had appeared at the hall as early as 9:00am yesterday  exchanging leasantries and taking photographs with other graduates.

Not long after the arrival of the Vice President, Goodluck Jonathan, accompanied by the host, Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State and his Niger state counterpart, Dr Ibrahim Babangida Aliyu trouble started for Ribadu.

Before the Vice President was ushered inside the hall, Ribadu, who was spotted wearing a light ash Babariga, black cap and matching leather slippers, was escorted outside the main hall by some hefty looking security operatives in mufti.

At about 11:00am, when the NIPSS Acting Director of studies, Dr. Adamu Fika, was called upon by the moderator to present granduands of the Senior Executive Course 30 to the visiting president, represented by the VP; he announced that 65 participants were inaugurated in February 2008 by the Vice President.

He added however that "out of this number, two were not going to be part of the graduation for reasons ranging from ill-health and others." He then proceeded to announce the names of the two as Nuhu Ribadu and Deinbo Allen Briggs, an announcement which caused some stir as the hall went into murmur.

However, Ribadu who spoke on phone with our correspondent said he was "forced out of the graduation hall" by security operatives and taken to a hidden location within the premises.

"They forced me out of the hall with 40 members of my family and friends who have come to rejoice with me", he told our correspondent. He said he did not know why it had to be that way since he was not made to be aware of the plan on ground, "for me not to graduate".

"I was forced out; I don’t know why it has to be like that. You cannot come even if I said you should come. They (the security men) would not allow you in," he stated

Before the eventual drama involving Ribadu, it was reliably learnt that the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Michael Aondoaka, had arrived NIPSS after the Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni had delivered the annual Distinguished Lecture of the Institute, with a message from the government instructing that the former corruption fighter be prevented from graduating.

The management of NIPSS under the Acting Director General, Mr. James K. Opadiran was said to have met to decide the fate of Ribadu based on the "message" brought by Aondoaka.

Unknown to Ribadu who had already joined his graduating colleagues, he was asked by the chief security officer of the Institution to vacate the hall, which he promptly did, after which he was told he would not receive his certificate of graduation even when he was listed among the graduands.

At this point, his wife and six children and other close associates who had come to rejoice with him were dragged outside by the security men who all joined Ribadu at his chalet, NIIA Circle 12 of the participants’ quarters.

When our correspondent visited the chalet, a handful of well wishers were seen lamenting the situation. Efforts to get Ribadu’s comment failed as one of the sympathisers, who would not want his name in print said he was still at a loss of what to say and confused over the development. He pointed to a Prado Jeep which was seen taking Ribadu’s wife and her children out of NIPSS’ premises.

Last night there were indications that Ribadu was stopped from graduating based on his recent demotion by the Police Service Commission (PSC), from Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).

It was also learnt that a pending suit over the demotion instituted by Ribadu might have accounted for the decision of the Institute.

A top officer, who spoke in confidence to The Nation, said Ribadu was stopped from graduating because he was a DCP. He said "By the records of the PSC, Ribadu is still a DCP and that course he attended was meant for CPs and above.

"To allow him to graduate would amount to over-riding the decision of the PSC on Ribadu’s demotion and that won’t be good for the system. The PSC allowed Ribadu to get to graduation so that when he is eventually promoted to the post of a CP, he would only return to NIPSS to complete his convocation or graduation formalities."

The source added that if Ribadu was allowed to graduate, his demotion by the PSC would amount to nullity and that could be an issue for litigation. He said "You know Ribadu also sued the PSC for demoting him. So, he cannot approbate and reprobate at the same time. He should wait till a judicial pronouncement is made on his status in the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), before passing out from NIPSS.

"Ribadu was recently queried by the Inspector

56  Forum / Relationships & Romance / Policemen make us pregnant in detention on: 15-11-2008 10:51 AM
To this end, many children born by the inmates are largely unclaimed, and the women, though some know the fathers of their kids, many of them do not.

Saturday Vanguard discovered this during a visit to the nation’s No 1 prison at Apapa,  the Kirikiri Maximum Prisons in Lagos State.

Wardresses and female prisoners themselves confirmed to Saturday Vanguard that policemen are fathers of more than 80 per cent of pregnancies at the prison.

However, our investigations showed that the female section of the Kirikiri Prisons Lagos, accommodates about145 inmates. Here, as most prisons in Nigeria, awaiting trial inmates top the list, with over 80 percent of the inmates population.

There are those serving various jail terms, including one that is serving life jail term. There are not less than five condemned inmates in the Female Prisons at the Kirikiri  Prisons.

The prison harbours about 10 nursing mothers, over15 expectant mothers and over 10 inmates living with HIV/AIDS virus in the female section of the Kirikiri Prisons.

According to Saturday Vanguard’s investigation, while seven of the inmates were delivered of the babies in the prisons at the time of this report, three brought their babies to the prisons.

Saturday Vanguard’s findings also revealed the 15 expectant mothers, who officials of the Kirikiri female Prison have tested and confirmed, are in various stages of development. While four of the nursing mothers whose babies are still very young- not more than three months- are in one room under watched by prison’s medical staff, others who babies are older stay in normal cells.

Investigation revealed that though quite a number of both the nursing mothers and the expectant mothers are either married or know the fathers to their babies, many others cannot.

The crimes of the women range from murder, manslaughter, armed robbery  to stealing.  A senior wardress who spoke on condition anonymity told Saturday Vanguard, “as we speak, I can tell you that we have 10 nursing mothers. While seven put to bed in the prison, three came to the prison with their babies.

Also, there over 15 expectant mothers who have been tested and confirmed as expectant mothers “

For those who can hardly identify either the fathers of their babies, investigation revealed that while many of them are street ladies, some claimed un-identified policemen put them in the family way.

One of them said,  “In the night, some policemen on night duties would be telling us to allow them to have some rounds of sex with us.

They would be telling us that in the morning,  they would help us so that we will be free. We have no choice other than to give hoping that they would help us to be let off the hook in the morning. That is how some of us got this.”

A  wardress in the female prison told Saturday Vanguard that there is no doubt that some of the inmates were actually impregnated by some unscrupulous policemen.

“I can tell you that there is no doubt that some dubious police do get some of these girls impregnated because some of them that we interviewed told us gory tales of their encounter with some of these policemen in the night.

“When the girls are brought to the prisons, by the time we are searching them, we will be  seeing different kind  of nonsense in their body.  That is, you will see sperms inside them. When we ask them, they would say it is the police people. Some of them would tell us that after having rounds of sex with them, the policemen would tell them to reduce their ages on the ground that by the time they reduce their ages to reflect under-age or minors, it would be easier for them (police) to help so that they would not be sent to the prisons.

“Often times, girls  fall victims to this and you see girls who are adult would come to the prisons claiming under-age. When we start interviewing  them, they would say they are 16 or lesser years old.

When we want to reject them, they would be begging that they would not want to go back to the Police station because they would not want to experience police molestations and things like that.”

According to the source, the police connections is not recorded because “it is not our responsibility unless the inmates complain officially and to higher authorities. The information we record include their names, the day they were brought to the prisons, the day their warrants were signed, the name of the Judge that presided over their cases and the day they would leave the prisons in addition to their age.

These information are what the information sheet are meant to answer and only those answers are recorded. Any other thing outside these are not recorded because there are no provision for them. “

The wardresses went on to say that when the women come, they would ask them whether they have anything with the police.

“ Because experience has taught us, when the policemen that brought them had gone, some would start complaining that they had so, so and so things with certain police officer or officers. Because of that we decided to be asking them whether they have any unclaimed property or item with the police before the police officers that brought them leave.”

“There was another case about two and half years ago. The moment she was told that she is pregnant, she started saying, it is the police people, it is the police people. When she eventually put to bed, she had wanted to kill the child but, the authorities detailed people to watch and monitor her movement before left about two years ago.”

Collaborating her colleague, another Wardress said: “Once the judge has passed his or her sentence on the inmate to serve jail term, we always look out for the date the inmate was sentenced to make sure it corresponds with the date she was brought to the prisons.

When we discover discrepancy in the date sentenced and the date the inmate was brought in, we would ask the police officer or officers that brought the inmate. Often times, some of them would say by the time the judgement was passed, it was too late to bring the inmate to prisons or that there was no vehicle to bring the inmate on that day. When we ask where did they take the inmate at the end of the day, the police would be saying one story to another. You hear something like  we took her to hotel, back to the police station or things like that.

Meanwhile, not less than female 10  inmates are living with HIV/AIDS, in Kirikiri, while cases of malarial typhoid, typhoid, Skin diseases like rashes, scabies In fact, report has it that two inmates died of scabies not so long ago.

According to Saturday Vanguard’s finding, although the prison authorities are doing their best to address the medical needs of the inmates, the female prison is presently suffering from lack of  delivery room and  shortage of anti malaria drugs because of its prevalence.

According a wardress, “for example, the nursing mothers  attend clinic for their ante-natal care. People bring things like baby things for them. When they are here, some of them get abandoned by their relatives.

It is only some of religious group like the Redeemed Church, Catholic, Anglican and so on in addition to some Muslim group that come to look after them.

They bring food stuff, clothes and other things for them. Some wealthy individuals also bring things for them.”

57  Forum / Politics / Oshiomhole as Edo gov on: 11-11-2008 06:26 PM

The Appeal Court sitting in Benin City, the Edo State capital on Tuesday sacked former Governor Osarhiemen Osunbor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and declared Mr. Adams Oshiomhole of the Action Congress (AC) the lawfully elected governor of the state in the April 2007 governorship polls. The five-man panel, led by the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Umaru Abdulahi, after exhaustively dissecting the grounds of appeal filed by all parties in the case, ruled in favour of the former president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). Osunbor and the PDP had filed various grounds of appeal seeking to upturn the earlier ruling of the Justice Phillip Umeadi-led state election petitions tribunal which had earlier declared Oshiomhole the duly elected governor of the state.

60  Forum / Politics / Yar'Adua sacks 20 ministers on: 30-10-2008 09:41 AM
here was no inkling that something like that was in the offing yesterday: the list of ministers to be dropped from President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s cabinet, which Nigerians had waited for in the past five months.
But when the list eventually came around 7.30 pm, it was shock and surprise galore.
Twenty ministers were dropped from the cabinet.
Among them were Minister and Deputy Chairman, National Planning Commis-sion, Senator Mohammed Sanusi Daggash, and Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Alhaji Aliyu Modibbo Umar, both of whom were believed to be in the President’s kitchen cabinet.
A statement issued last night by Presidential Spokesman Olusegun Adeniyi said the ministers were relieved of their posts in furtherance of the ongoing efforts to reposition and strengthen the present administration for enhanced effectiveness in service delivery.
President Yar’Adua had restructured the federal ministries in September, de-merging some ministries earlier merged under erstwhile President Olusegun Obasanjo and creating a new Ministry of Niger Delta. Under the restructuring, there is now a total of 28 ministries to be manned by 42 ministers.
Among those dropped in yesterday’s cabinet reshuffle were Adamu Maina Waziri - Minister of State Agriculture; Charles Ugwu - Commerce & Industry; Ahmed Garba Bichi - Minister of State Commerce & Industry; Igwe Aja-Nwachuku - Minister of Education; Jerry Anthony Agada - Minister of State Education 1; Fatima Balaraba Ibrahim; Minister of State Power; Emmanuel Olatunde Odusina - Minister of State Gas; Halima Tayo Alao – Minister of Environment and Housing, and John James Akpanudoedehe – Minister of State Federal Capital Territory.
Others dropped were: Tijani Yahaya Kaura - Minister of State 1 Foreign Affairs; Ibrahim Dasuki Nakande – Minister of State for Information & Communication; Alhaji Haruna Hassan – Minister of State Interior; Sarafa Tunji Isola – Minister of Mines and Steel Development; Ahmed Mohammed Gusau - Minister of State Mines and Steel Development; Felix Hyatt – Minister of State Transportation (Aviation); John Okechukwu Emeka - Minister of State Transportation 2; Saudatu Usman Bungudu – Minister of Women Affairs, and Abdulrahman Hassan Gimba - M/Chairman National Sports Commission (NSC).
THISDAY learnt some of the ministers were dropped for non-performance or poor performance, while others were axed for alleged in-fighting, which former ministers of FCT, Environment and Water Resources were said to be pronounced in.
Adeniyi said the President also directed that until new Ministers are confirmed by the Senate and sworn into office, Mr. Remi Babalola (Minister of State, Finance), would serve as Supervising Minister for FCT.
Similarly, the Minister of State, Agriculture and Water Resources, Mr. Demola Seriki, would serve as Supervising Minister for the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, while Dr. Aliyu Idi Hong (Minister of State, Culture and Tourism) will serve as Supervising Minister for the Federal Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Alhaji Alhassan Bako Zaku (Minister of State, Science & Technology) is to act as Supervising Minister for the NSC; Elder Godsday Orubebe (Minister, Special Duties) will act as Supervising Minister/Vice Chairman, National Planning Commission and Mrs. Grace Ekpiwhre (Minister, Science & Technology) will oversee the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs.”
Yesterday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting started an hour and a half behind the scheduled time of 10.am.
Oblivious of what was coming, most of the ministers were their usual self, throwing banters and discussing in groups about their various ministries and the decision to host the U-17 World Cup next year.
Five months after alerting the nation of impending cabinet reshuffle, inside sources confirmed to THISDAY that President Yar’Adua hinted the ministers that yesterday’s FEC meeting was likely to be the last for some of them.
He thanked them for their contributions to national development and asked them to watch out for those who have been retained and those who have been dropped later on the NTA network news.
The source further confirmed that those who are retained collected their letters of reappointment after their meeting before leaving the Presidential Villa.
At about 4.10 pm, President Yar’Adua took a valedictory photograph with the ministers.
But the three ministers in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs namely Chief Ojo Madueke, Tijani Yahaya Kaura, Ambassador Bagudu M. Hirse and Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Michael Kaase Aondoakaa (SAN), who are said to be away for official assignments outside the country as well as Transportation Minister, Mrs. Diezani K. Alison Madueke, who was earlier in the meeting but had to leave for medical check-up were not part of the photo session.
Incidentally, the five of them were among those retained.
The taking of the photograph with the ministers preceded President Yar’Adua’s announcement of ministers to be dropped.
Daggash can be said to be a good actor as he came out of the meeting bubbling with life, shaking hands and generally joking with journalists.
When some reporters tried to approach him on the matter, he said rhetorically: “You think I have been sacked?”
At the end of the meeting, some of the ministers tried with little success to hide their emotions as they filed out to take the photograph with President Yar’Adua at the unusual photo session, which was the fist indication that the months of suspense over the cabinet reshuffle had ended.
Some ministers were seen expressing relief that the suspense was finally over confirming that the President’s delay in effecting the cabinet reshuffle had affected the pace of work at the various ministries.
One of the former ministers said the suspense was too much and was capable of causing hypertension.
It was easy to tell those who will not be returning as they had what seemed like forced smiles on their faces.
They walked briskly out of the villa after the photograph session, while others returning were seen backslapping each other and shaking hands.
