The prayer is, may we not be in such situations. Even if a man decides to do it to save himself and his wife from harm, his instrument may not cooperate. Many men cannot perform under slight pressure or anxiety, not to talk of when there is a lunatic watching you with a gun in his hand. So in essence, the choice is not theirs to make. The prayer again is that we do not encounter evil.

Twitter is awash with naked images of women, including our own girls here in Nigeria, under various guises, such as BoobsThursday, Wet Wednesday, Twitter Afterdark, TeamNaked, etc. There's a lesson for them in this Zambian girl's story.

A popular south African businessman and his wife are currently recuperating in a Pretoria hospital after a gun man shot them for not complying with his demand.

But forgive the businessman for being confused, it is not the sort of demand armed men make of their victims very often. This particular gunman requested the businessman and his wife to undress and make love for his entertainment!

If you were in the businessman's shoes, or you were the wife/girlfriend, would you do it differently to save yourself and your partner from harm?

What is it with young girls and nudity these days? If they are not snapping themselves in naked, they are agreeing to filming their intimacy with their boyfriends.

The line is usually that it is not meant for public consumption. But then, what is meant for private consumption sometimes gets to be consumed publicly, and then, the consequences are always grave.

A 20-year-old daughter of a top Zambian politician is now a convict on account of a moment of indiscretion. Not much is heard of her male counterpart, but the consequences for her have been grave indeed, including being sent away from college and now being found guilty of producing a pornographic film.

When will girls learn?

85  Forum / Politics / 98 Percent Of Robberies Committed By Okada Riders- Commissioner Of Police on: 26-10-2012 07:55 AM
These stat looks far-fetched, but it's coming from the man who should know. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umaru Manko has disclosed that 98 percent of robbery incidents in Lagos are perpetrated by men on Okada. Even if we do not totally agree with this stat, the truth of the matter is that motorcycles have become a ready tool for armed robbers in Lagos.

86  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Conversation with a Facebook fraudster on: 9-10-2012 08:39 AM
Beware of Facebook chats as fraudsters have infiltrated that service as well...

If a friend of yours on Facebook is asking you to send him phone credit urgently, activate your anti-fraud mode instantly, because chances are that he is a clone of your friend.

I’ve just concluded the conversation below with a fraudster who apparently has hijacked the account of an old time friend.

He has tried since Friday, October 5 to hold a conversation with me, but I’d been too busy.

Today, he tried again and made his request for a N2000 credit because he was in a meeting and he needed the airtime urgently. Snag was, the Ibe that I know (surname withheld) is a proud man, and would not request for a recharge card from anyone even if his life depended on it. Okay, maybe that’s exaggerated, but you get the picture.

Secondly, he was supposed to be in a high profile meeting, yet he was on Facebook for hours.

I offered to share him some of my credit, knowing that for that to happen, he would have to send me his number. He saw through that and declined. He instead requested me to send it through Facebook! He soon realised he was not going to 'hammer' and went offline.

Our youths want to be rich by all means and anyone or anything, is fair game. If they are not masquerading as a lady who needs love, they are hijacking the identity of others to dupe people. It’s the tragedy of a highly commercialised society, where people are not respected unless they have money, regardless of whether the money was ripped off a fellow man/woman.

This growing tribe of young swindlers are increasingly destroying trust and making the world a cruel place for the trusting and the dull.

87  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Samsung GALAXY Note 10.1 Hits Lagos on: 8-10-2012 03:02 PM
Samsung Electronics West Africa, has unveiled its highly anticipated GALAXY Note 10.1 for the Nigerian market. The device, positioned as a device that enhances productivity, creativity and learning capability is now available for purchase at Samsung’s Experience Store in Ikeja City Mall in Alausa, Lagos and at authorized retailers across the country.

Powered by Google's Android software Ice Cream Sandwich, the GALAXY Note 10.1 extends Samsung’s GALAXY Note category, building on the success of last year’s worldwide hit Smartphone and delivering the functionality and precision of pen and paper by combining the S Pen with a 10.1 inch large display.

It is equipped with a quad-core processor that allows users to run multiple applications at a faster speed than the previous version, which had a dual-core processor. It also features a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, 1.9-megapixel front camera, a microSD slot that allows for expansion by up to an extra 32GB of storage and a battery life that supports up to nine hours of usage.

The device also comes with a customized copy of Adobe Photoshop Touch, which allows users to do fine-grained, professional-quality photo editing; a universal television remote software that offers recommendations based on previous TV viewing habits and AllShare Play, which lets users share content with large groups in real-time, by connecting GALAXY Note 10.1 to Samsung HD TVs, phones, mobile tablets, laptops, and other consumer electronic devices on the same network.

"Our goal with the Samsung GALAXY Note 10.1 was simple - redefine the tablet experience. The advanced technology and features included in the device give users the power to produce, create and customize communications. For the user, the resulting experience is completely new, thrilling and quite unexpected,” said Mr. Abiodun Odejayi, Head of Marketing, Hand Held Products at Samsung Electronics West Africa.

Olumide Ojo, Head of Sales, Hand Held Products, Samsung Electronics West Africa, said: “Other tablets multitask only in that they allow users to toggle between different applications, which is more or less single tasking. You are really only doing one thing at once with such tablets. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is unique in that its screen can display two applications at once, allowing the user to cut and paste material between the applications. For instance, a user can take notes while reading a book; look up some information while watching a movie or even copy an address from an online magazine onto the notepad.”

88  Forum / Politics / What we are doing wrong in fighting terror/Boko Haram on: 24-09-2012 07:55 AM

A Boko Haram accountant was arrested and immediately the media is reporting where the lead emanated from.

We have been told that it was a transfer in a bank that aroused suspicion etc, etc. The Boko Haram guys who probably might not have known how their accountant was traced and arrested in a public transport now know exactly how it happened and how they can be more cautious to evade arrest.

The JTF and other security operatives need to create firewall around their sensitive information. There are too many operatives who talk too much, perhaps in a bid to convince the public that they are working.

The other day a commissioner of police was seen in a press photo story publicly presenting monetary reward to a citizen who gave useful information to the police that led to the arrest of some Boko Haram suspects! Where in the whole wide world is that ever done?

Definitely the cover of that fellow is blown for life, and he can no longer be useful to the operatives as every other criminal will give him a wide berth. And more importantly, his family is at the peril of vindictive criminals.

The media have a role as well, and perhaps a crash course should be organised by terrorism specialists. We can’t seriously fight terrorism where sensitive information leaks like water in a basket.

90  Forum / Politics / What happened to the LASTMA officials who publicly disgraced their boss? on: 3-09-2012 07:58 AM
The case of that woman who LASTMA boss, Babatunde Edu falsely accused of killing a LASTMA official, Hameed Balogun, is dying down. But what has been done about the LASTMA officials who concorted that charge against the poor woman? Should they go scot free. If they can frivolously slam a charge of murder/manslaugter on an innocent woman, is any motorist free in the hands of LASTMA guys in Lagos?
Now that a new law prescribes a jail term of one year without an option of fine for jumping red light, what stops a LASTMA official from accusing any motorist he wants to extort of having jumped the light when he hasnt? After all, they accused someone of something graver falsely and nothing happened.

91  Forum / Family / Nigerian couple jailed in UK for beating their kids on: 15-08-2012 07:45 AM
This Nigerian couple were jailed yesterday. Was their daughter right to have reported her parents to the authorities and in the process responsible for sending them to jail?
------
A Nigerian couple have been sentenced to seven years in prison each for a decade long campaign of abuse against their six children. They face deportation after their sentence.
The Nigerian couple, who claimed their kids were possessed by evil spirits, beat them with brooms, hoovers and wires and even gave their baby a morphine overdose just days after her first birthday.
The plight of the children was so bad that Coronation Street actress Michelle Collins, who met them at a church lunch, took them to the cinema 'because she felt sorry for them'
Five of the children were finally rescued after their eldest daughter threw a heart-wrenching SOS note out of a window.
But it wasn't until their one-year-old baby was given a morphine overdose over a year later that police reopened the case which led to their prosecution.
But the parents, both 40, who cannot be named to protect their six children, claimed they were victims of a conspiracy - and even alleged Miss Collins was involved in a witch hunt against them and wanted to ‘steal’ their children.

92  Forum / Politics / How Gov Fashola signed death warrant for LASTMA officials on: 12-08-2012 06:53 PM
If we think properly about the last Friday's killing of LASTMA official, Hameed Balogun, we would realise Gov. Fashola has some responsibility for it. More danger lies ahead...

Death warrant for LASTMA officials?

An official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) unfortunately lost his life yesterday while trying to apprehend a one-way traffic violator at Ajah in Lagos.

We may have started paying the cost of that controversial law prescribing jail term for one-way traffic violators in Lagos.

On July 18, I uploaded a blog criticising the one-way violation clause, drawing the attention of the authorities to the ‘cost of enforcement beyond naira and kobo". This is what I was alluding to.

We have no way of knowing who drove the offending car until a thorough investigation is carried out. Eye witnesses have taken to the new media to offer accounts that are different from the version circulated by LASTMA.

But the fact remains that a one-way traffic violator has run over a LASTMA official barely one week into the signing of the controversial law by Governor Babatunde Fashola.

LASTMA claims it was a female banker and mother of a three month-old, Yinka Johnson, that ran over the traffic official, Mr. Hameed Balogun, when he accosted her for contravening the one-way traffic law at Mega City, Ajah.

The General Manager, LASTMA, Mr. Babatunde Edu, said after hitting the 33-year-old LASTMA official, Johnson ran into Ikota Estate, Ajah, where security guards prevented LASTMA officials from arresting her.

“The driver, whose identity was revealed by the Auto Inspector device as Yinka Johnson, an employee of IBTC, drove in a green LandRover Jeep with registration number CY 276 LSD against traffic from Mega Chicken inward toll plaza two.

“She was intercepted by three officials of LASTMA led by the Head of Operations, Mr. Quayum Asafa, for traffic violation. Johnson started driving recklessly in order to escape and in the process ran over the officer,” Edu said.

This is an unfortunate incident and it gives me no pleasure to say that I warned the authorities about it. But the sad reality is that this sort of things will happen more. It is only common sense.

If LASTMA officials encountered occasional desperate one-way violators when the penalty was a fine, they will encounter more desperate motorists now that the penalty is a jail term without an option of fine. One would have thought this was so basic that no one would need to belabour the point.

93  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / MTN offers aeroplane to customers! on: 10-08-2012 10:28 AM
The front page of The Punch this morning is a wonder. MTN plastered more than half of the page with an advert inviting customers to win a brand new aeroplane.

They call it MTN Ultimate Wonder. They got that right because I still find it hard to believe.

Apart from the mega prize, N200 million cash is to be dispensed as well. There will be weekly Star Prize of N2million for 12 people, weekly prize of N150, 000 for 100 people and instant cash prize of N50, 000 if spotted with an MTN Ultimate Wonder Sticker.

To qualify, customers are requested to recharge with a minimum of N200 to be in line for the weekly draws to win N2m or N150, 000 weekly prizes. Total recharge of up to N3000 during the promo qualifies customers for a draw to win the mega prize of Cessna 182T physically or the cash value.

You have between today and 31st October, 2012 to join the club of the Dangotes, Pastor Oyedepos and other jet-flyers...

Overgrown Armpit Hair Event Medal Table

Gold: USA- James Harden
Silver: Nigeria- Al-Farouq Aminu
Bronze: USA- Kobe Bryant

At the ongoing London 2012 Olympics, the United States has boosted its standing on the medals table by snatching two from the Overgrown Armpit Hair Event (OAHE) category.

James Harden of the US Basketball team effortlessly took home the gold medal, with his luxuriant underarm hair that competed well with his rich goatee. His compatriot, Kobe Bryant got Bronze, with his moderate but ambitious underarm hair, which sharply contrasted his bald head.

Mother luck smiled on Nigeria whose performance has been lacklustre so far, when its representative, Al Farouq Aminu, snatched silver at this keenly contested event with his lush, healthy and free underarm hair.
The US has however vowed to claim all available medals in this category and the proposed category of ‘Tinted Underarm Hair (TUH) in the next edition of the Olympics.

Roads that lead to jail in Lagos

A report in The Guardian says the controversial new traffic bill prescribing 3 years jail term for one-way traffic violators will be signed into law tomorrow by Gov Fashola. Trying to be my brother’s keeper, I would like to share with you some roads in Lagos that can take you directly to jail as from Friday.

Since a new Shopping Mall accommodating Shoprite was launched in Alausa, Ikeja, the road that passes directly behind it is now a one-way street. Policemen have been feeding fat on people who had used that road for ages and are unaware of this new development. When the bill becomes law, heading in the wrong direction on the road will send you to jail for three years.

To new motorists or those visiting Lagos, Somolu is filled with booby-traps that can send you to jail. One-way streets there are numerous. But the ones that quickly come to mind include Oyebajo Street. If you're coming from Morocco Road, going to Ikorodu Road, Oyebajo Street is to the right. With no visible signs, this street is a one-way ticket to jail.

Again, when coming from Ikorodu Road, heading to Igbobi College, there is another one-way traffic street by Fadeyi Bus Stop via Kalejaiye Street. It is the right turning before the National Orthopaedic hospital. LASTMA guys will usually not stay at the entry point to warn you, but in the middle to apprehend you. You will regain your freedom in three years!

Then the popular bridge linking Dopemu to Egbeda is one-way traffic at a designated time of each day. From 5am to 1159am you can cross from Dopemu side to the Egbeda side and vice versa without any trouble. But by noon if you cross from Egbeda side to Dopemu, LASTMA and the police will be waiting for you with a Black Maria. Kiss your freedom goodbye.
On the Yaba/Akoka axis, there are a few booby-traps, apart from the clear one-way traffic roads with concrete medians. The one that leaps to mind now is the major road from University Junction that leads directly to UNILAG Gate. This road is 95 percent two-way traffic. But there is a 5 percent one-way traffic, where you have to detour inside the community and burst out a little further down the road. There is an old, faded ‘No Entry’ sign, to warn motorists, but many first timers miss it. They are joking with three years jail term.

The service lane at Osodi coming from Mile Two is presumably two-way traffic up to a little after NAFDAC. The road forks into two, the right links CAPPA/Mushin, while the left links Osodi Oke. Motorists who want to drop passengers at Osodi, but are too law-abiding to do it on the Expressway, usually enter the service lane, drop their passengers, drive past NAFDAC and at the fork, bear left to link Osodi Oke, onward to Oworonsoki or Maryland, as the case maybe. But any day some LASTMA officials are broke, they usually stay on top of Osodi Oke bridge and  monitor those climbing the bridge at the fork. They then pounce on them, accusing them of one-way traffic violation. If you are unlucky to pass that route on one of such days, you will be writing a prison memoir soon, or you offer to pay for the school fees of the children of the ‘hardworking’ LASTMA guys who apprehend you.  Which would it be?

Then, from the past few months, motorists coming from Toll Gate by 7 Up, and attempting to link Oregun  can no longer drive straight into Ikosi Road by Union Bank. Entry has been barred even though there is no single sign to that effect yet. In lieu of that, there are traffic cones placed there to guide motorists. In all fairness, there are sometimes some honest LASTMA guys at the intersection to guide confused motorists how they can access Ikosi via Unilever. But often times, on duty are the crooked ones who see an opportunity to make money. When a LAWMA truck or other government vehicles exempted from traffic laws blow these cones away, motorists coming afterwards inadvertently drive into Ikosi at the intersection and are slammed by LASTMA and gun-toting policemen. You are in serious trouble.

There are many more, I’m sure. If there are some roads you know that are not included, be your brothers’ keeper and share. Wish you a jail-free motoring.

96  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Increasing wave of Kidney failures on: 23-07-2010 08:14 AM
It is becoming alarming the rate kidney failure cases are being recorded in Nigeria these days. From notable figures to ordinary, everyday people, cases keep cropping up, prompting one to wonder if there is anything that people are doing these days that our ancestors never used to do.

I know for one that fake drugs and adulterated food will top the list of causes of failure of internal organs in this country. Imagine people putting dusting powder in capsules and selling them as antibiotics, or people pouring chemicals into palm oil to turn it into groundnut oil. These despicable acts no doubt will be responsible for some of the preponderant cases of internal organ failures. Not to mention negligent, deplorable Medicare facilities.

To compound issues, there are no dialysis centres in most public hospitals across Nigeria. You have to go to private hospitals which charge between N30, 000 and N50, 000 per session for dialysis, whereas a kidney failure patient has to do about three every week to stay alive. No wonder that many poor people die unsung from this problem every day.

It baffles me that authorities do not care about these problems, in spite of the huge mortality rate. This is perhaps because they know they can afford to travel abroad for treatment were they to be affected. With the exception of the MTN Foundation which announced recently that it has constructed brand new dialysis centres in 11 public hospitals across the country for the use of the general public, there is absolutely nothing being done in this direction by people who should be more concerned.

I wish Nigerians would take our leaders to task over this obvious lapse and absolute lack of regard for the lives of human beings. Things cannot go on like this in this country. For now, the only option available to the overwhelming poor people of Nigeria is to pray to God to spare them these diseases and conditions that are expensive to manage. Otherwise, they are on their own.
