Joyce Banda, who has made history becoming Malawi's first female president and only the second woman to lead a country in Africa, has a track record of fighting for women's rights.

She took power over the weekend following the death of 78-year-old President Bingu wa Mutharika, who died in office after heading up the southern Africa country since 2004.

Mr Mutharika's decision to appoint her as his running mate for the 2009 elections surprised many in Malawi's mainly conservative, male-dominated society - which had never before had a female vice-president.

Equally surprising was her decision to publicly stand up to her boss - by refusing to endorse his plans for his brother, Foreign Affairs Minister Peter Mutharika, to succeed him as president in 2014 when he was due to retire.

She was promptly thrown out of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party - and subjected to daily doses of derision at public rallies and on Malawi's state airwaves.

A senior ruling party official openly said Malawi was "not ready for a female president", while First Lady Callista Mutharika said Mrs Banda was fooling herself that she was a serious politician - saying she was a mere market woman selling fritters.

"She will never be president, how can a mandasi [fritter] seller be president?" Mrs Mutharika said.

Mrs Banda took all this in her stride, saying she was glad to be identified with market women since more than 80% of Malawian women belong to that category: "Yes, she's right, I'm indeed a mandasi seller and I'm proud of it because the majority of women in Malawi are like us, mandasi sellers."

She also resisted calls for her to resign as the country's vice-president - she was elected not appointed so she could not be fired by Mr Mutharika - and instead set up her own People's

Responsibility means taking the consequences for your own actions. Being a good citizen means getting involved in your community. Voting is another big thing. Voting is very important to your country because you help make decisions. It is also important because you know how to help your country and make a difference. Responsible citizens don't litter, riot or hut other people because of something that they did. A basic form of being responsible is listening to your parents and doing your fair share of work without complaining. Being conscience of other people around you make you a good citizen.

Another way to be a good citizen is to not commit crimes. Drugs are a crime you hear about often. Doing drugs puts innocent people at risk of being killed. It is a quick and easy way to end up in jail. Probably the biggest thing you can do in being responsible is not drinking and driving because you can kill someone. Instead, be responsible by taking a cab or having a designated driver that didn't drink. Murder is a very bad thing. It is not responsible and will put you in jail, or worse. You don't have to be a person's friend but you should not kill them over something. It is not good citizenship commit crimes because it puts innocent people at risk and it puts yourself at risk.

To be a good citizen you should learn and understand what is going on in the world around you. That means you should read the newspaper. The newspaper has a lot of information in it. All the current events are in the newspaper including problems in the government and other issues in the world. You can also get information about storms or other things that might concern you. The television news is the second best way to get information, but you don't always get the right information. It is a lot easier then reading the newspaper. If you talk to others, you can get more information that you have missed. Using this you can educate yourself and other people about the world around you.

I think that all people can be good citizens, but you have to try or it is not possible. Whether it is obeying the law, volunteering, or educating, it is all good citizenship. There are more things that you can do, but it is up to you, no one can choose it for you.
