9  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Woman, 61, gives birth to her own grandson Acts as a surrogate for her daughter on: 15-02-2011 08:37 AM
Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked A 61 year-old American woman has given birth to her own grandson.

Kristine Casey offered to act as a surrogate for her daughter Sara Connell, who had been trying for a baby for several years.

Ms Connell, 35, and her husband Bill are the biological parents of the baby boy, Finnean Lee, who was conceived through IVF, but carried by her mother.

Ms Connell became pregnant after undergoing IVF treatment in 2004, but delivered stillborn twins, and later suffered a miscarriage.

She held her mother's hand as Finnean Lee was delivered at 39 weeks by caesarean section, the Chicago Tribune newspaper reported. When she heard her baby cry out, she was overcome with emotion.

"I lost it. It's such a miracle," Ms Connell told the Tribune.

The new mother was not the only one affected by events.

"The surgery itself was uncomplicated, and the emotional context of this delivery was so profound," said Dr Susan Gerber, specialist obstetrician at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where Finnean was born.

Ms Casey, from Virginia, had previously delivered three babies, the last one some 30 years ago. She is thought to be the oldest woman in the state of Illinois to give birth.

A 52-year-old French woman who already has three children and is a grandmother of three, has just given birth to triplets in Toulouse, France.

Catherine Colonges welcomed baby Elian, Leonora and Alexis into the world on January 10th. They join their two brothers, aged 27 and 30, and a sister, aged 15.

Elian, a boy, was born first, followed by his sister, Leonore, and then Alexis, a boy.

Colonges is of Togolese origin and currently lives in the French village of Limogne-en-Quercy with her husband Michel, aged 51. She told AFP: ‘It’s a great joy to be with my family and to see [my daughter] look after her brothers and her sister with love.”

The pregnancy occurred naturally and unlike the 62-year-old Bulgarian woman who gave birth to twins in May 2010, was not aided by IVF.

Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Providence, yesterday, averted what could have been tragic death of some road users, when one of the ailing bridges on the Etegwe-Tombia-Amassoma Road built some five decades ago collapsed.

The collapsed bridge on which vehicles from opposite directions could not cross simultaneously, is one of the several narrow bridges on the route leading to the Shell multibillion dollar Gbarain-Ubie Gas Gathering Plant.

The road also links the state owned Niger Delta University at Amassoma, Bayelsa Television Station, Gbarantoru and the School of Nursing, Tombia.

It was gathered that the bridge which collapsed, yesterday morning was constructed by Shell about 50 years ago to enable its personnel access to its oil fields in the Gbarain axis of the state.

13  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Zenith Bank Burnt as Policeman kills Pregnant Woman and Taxi Driver in Abuja on: 1-02-2011 05:21 PM
A mob on Monday razed a branch of Zenith bank at Mpape, Abuja following the shooting of a taxi driver and a lady passenger to death by a policeman attached to the bank.

The incident, which almost got out of hand also, consumed nine cars belonging to the bank and its members of staff, while the ATM machine was looted and set on fire.

The two persons were rushed to an undisclosed hospital, but unconfirmed reports said they later died of gun injuries. Trouble started when the policeman accidentally shot the taxi driver who had parked in front of the bank for his passenger to alight. The bullet also hit the female passenger, which led to her death; and this triggered the riot and attack on the bank.

Lorry load of policemen and soldiers were later brought to control the situation..

The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, John Haruna told journalists that “the policeman at the centre of the crisis has been taken into custody,” stressing that there were certain conditions that must be met before firearms could be used, but these conditions were not satisfied before the policeman fired his weapon.” The Mpape Divisional Police Officer, Imran Balarabe said he was at home when the incident happened but was informed by the Divisional Crime Officer via a phone call around 8 am. “I quickly dashed to the scene, only to see hundreds of angry people attacking the bank and attempting to break into the banking hall.” He said. The DPO said the information he had was that the gun went off when the policeman hit his rifle against the car to urge the taxi driver not to park in front of the bank, adding that the rifle may not have been cocked. However, Igwebuike Ugwueze, an artisan whose workshop is directly opposite the bank explained to NEXT that he heard a gunshot and saw the policeman speeding away as he was hotly chased by the mob.

“The policemen escaped into a bus which took off, then the people mobilised and started stoning the bank before setting it on fire. I learnt that some people suffered gunshot wounds, but I didn’t see any dead bodies,” he said.

NEXT observed money bands littering the frontage of the bank as well as expended shells on the ground.

16  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / ANAMBRA: Voters' Registration Centres Found in Evil Forest on: 26-01-2011 04:42 PM
Shock and disbelief could best describe the mood of Anambra State Deputy Governor, Mr. Emeka Sibeudu and the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for the state, Prof. Chukwuemeka Onukaogu, yesterday when the duo led security operatives to discover four registration centres located at a shrine in a deep forest.

The four centres which are in the deep Nziko forest at Nteje in Oyi Local Government Area, were manned by registration officers and had, at the time of the discovery, registered only about 200 voters since the commencement of the exercise 10 days ago.

Following security reports made available to Governor Peter Obi, his deputy and the REC led security operatives to the forest where the startling revelation of the four centres with the accompanying Direct Data Capture (DDC) machines was made.

On arrival at the forest which took about 40 minutes drive from the nearest residential area, the registration officers, mainly corps members, were idle and gazing at the machines with virtually nobody to register.

Reacting to the incident, the shock-stricken Prof. Onukaogu, described as painful, the discovery of four centres serving nobody in a thick forest when there were not enough machines for potential voters in places like Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, Adazi, Agulu and others.

He said: “I have heard of floating/flying polling booths. Today, I have seen one. I am sad that there are four machines wasting here, whereas there are no machines in Onitsha, Eke Awka, Ozubulu, Nnewi and parts of Anaocha where thousands of people are waiting to be registered.”

Onukaogu noted that the four centres had registered only about 200 voters since the exercise started 10 days ago, when the same machines would have registered several thousands had they been located in densely-populated areas.

He said the irregular location of the centres also posed grave risk to the registration officers and the machines, questioning, “how will I evacuate men and machines in the event of danger?”

The REC boss alleged that the centres have been secured by an influential politician from the area, who would want to use it to rig election, but assured that he would remove three machines and leave one behind, just as he would need to meet with the registration officials before taking action.

Onukaogu stressed that he was constrained by the fact that the “floating registration centres” deep in the forest were documented from the INEC Abuja headquarters and assured it would be corrected. Also speaking, the Deputy Governor, who expressed shock at the location of the registration centres, said: “We have shortfalls in machines. But in the forest here, there are four machines lying idle. All the people we met here are not up to 10. But if you go to some other places, you will find thousands of people waiting to be registered”.

Describing such registration centres as what people use to perpetuate electoral fraud, the deputy governor said: “This, I can assure you, is part of the rascality of the past which the present government under Mr. Peter Obi is trying hard to stamp out of the state.”

However, a former deputy chairman of Oyi Local Government, Chief Samuel Offorkansi, who is overseeing affairs at the voting centres, insisted that the place had been serving as voting and registration centres since 1998, stressing that contrary to what the people think, the centres were in the midst of densely populated villages.

17  Forum / The Buzz Central / Mercy Johnson Shaves Her Hair For N10 M on: 25-01-2011 10:06 AM
Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Aaaaaargh! My favorite screen goddess Mercy Johnson is now completely bald. The man responsible is none other than Michael Jaja, the director of the movie she is currently working on. In order to play the part of a widow in the movie, she has had to shave off all her hair. Nollywood fans will recall that this is not the first time that Mercy J will shave off her hair in order to interpret a role. She also shaved her hair off for the 2009 movie Before the Light, in which she played a cancer victim. The willingness of Mercy Johnson to continue to go to such lengths to interpret her roles continues to endear her to movie makers and fans alike. On the upside, the shaved head gives her an edgy, extreme look that is intriguing, refreshing, and still sexy (see pics below).

Uche Jombo is another actress who recently shaved off all her hair in order to play a role in a movie. Uche shaved of her hair for her role in her 2010 movie, Holding Hope, which she co-produced with Emem Isong. Her hair has begun to grow back now, and I am sure a lot of people will be watching Mercy J's hairline to see how soon her hair will begin to grow back also. Hmm, whoever said acting was easy. No be small thing o!

These are the first pictures of the employees charged alongside abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell for their part in his ‘House of Horrors’ clinic murder investigation.

Gosnell, 69, has been charged with murdering seven newborn babies and a 41-year-old mother in botched operations that resulted in ‘barbaric’ killings at his Philadelphia practice.

He was assisted by nine under-trained - sometimes untrained - people at the Women’s Medical Society and they have also been charged with various crimes; for with murder.
