Nwa Ada ekwerom; mba!
In modern societies, it is the duty of both parties to finance their family except in a case where they agree (or due to other reasons like unemploment, illiteracy, lack of professional skill, bad health or disability...) that one of the partners takes household duty as fulltime job (Housewives for ladies; stay-at-home-dads for men or Homemaker for both). Days are gone when it used to be a man's duty.

Note: I'm talking about modern societies not Nigeria

75  Forum / Politics / WORLD IGBO CONCRESS ADMITTED INTO UNECOSOC; ONE-NIGERIA IN DANGER? on: 25-07-2012 10:05 PM
United Nations-

The World Igbo Congress (WIC), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has been admitted into the United Nations' Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Dr. Acho Orabuchi, Media Director of WIC, announced this in a statement made available in New York on Tuesday.

The statement said WIC's admission took place during a regular session of the world body in Geneva on Tuesday.

“The world body unanimously voted to ratify the admission of WIC into the ECOSOC of the UN on a Special Consultative Status,'' it said.

Article 71 of the UN Charter opened the door, providing for suitable arrangements for consultation with NGOs.

To be eligible for consultative status, an NGO must have been in existence for at least two years and must have an established headquarters.

Being in existence means being officially registered with the appropriate government authorities as an NGO or non-profit body.

Also, for an NGO to gain this status, it must have, among others, a democratically-adopted constitution and authority to speak for its members.

It must also have a representative structure, appropriate mechanisms of accountability and democratic and transparent decision-making processes.

The basic resources of the organisation must be derived, in the main part, from contributions of the national affiliates or other components or from individual members.

“With the status, the body now has the opportunity to take advantage of the economic development programmes of several UN agencies that partner with NGOs under the ECOSOC arrangement,' WIC said in the statement.

It added that WIC would utilise the resources of the UN organs that deal with social issues, which would help the group deal with Igbo social and economic issues.

The statement said the Committee on Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) had in February recommended the admission of WIC.

It stated Dr. Anthony Ejiofor, the Executive Director of WIC, received calls on the admission of WIC from both Geneva and New York.

According to it, leaders of the Committee on NGO indicated in the calls that they had been monitoring WIC activities.

It added that the callers to Ejiofor assured WIC that they would help the organisation make the most use of its new status.

The statement also quoted the Chairman of WIC, Mazi Joe Eto, as describing the admission as “definitely a rare feat''.(NAN)

Many argue that this is one of the numerous moves by the Ibos towards secession from Nigeria.

You will recall that the Ibos under the umbrella of Biafra and several other organizations have gained international recognition in recent years by their activities and establishment in the United States and have not given up hope for an independent sovereign state.

A peaceful smart move towards the Biafran drean?

76  Forum / Politics / Yes, Nigerian women are most unfaithful in the whole world! - Poll on: 25-07-2012 09:16 PM
After the publication of the report of the survey conducted by international condom manufacturer, Durex, revealing that Nigerian women are the most unfaithful in the world, as 62 per cent of participants in the survey admitted cheating on their spouses, the Nigerian Tribune conducted an opinion poll on it's website; www.tribune.com.ng, to gauge Nigerians' reactions to the report. However, the poll conducted by the newspaper confirmed the result of the survey as out of the 1,377 people who participated in the exercise 704 (51.1 per cent) voted 'yes', 618 (44.9 per cent) voted 'no', while 55 (4 per cent) voted 'indifferent'.

Again, Tribune posted the question on their Facebook page where respondents were able to express their opinions on the issue.

Facebook Excerpts.

Winjobi Samuel Oluwafunmibi: O gush...this is a shame to Nigerian women.

Alademehin Felix Oluwaseun: It depends on individuals, my wife is faithful to me.

Chucks Nwanneka: Don't think is true unless some of the unfaithful ones that I know. For some reasons all are not the same irrespective of their financial predicament most of them are still on their feet as married women.

Kristoffa Emmanuel Emmanex: Yeah, I agree with dat (that) simply bcos (because) our nowadays girls or women betray their lovers if they c (see) anoda (another) comfortable man 4 d (for the) love of money.

David B Peter: Strongly disagree...d (the) so called "white" are d most unfaithful bcos (because) d (the) rate of divorce over there is much higher dan (than) ours.

Shodipo Oluwatoyin: Yes becos (because) all they know and want is money.

Olukemi Mary: I disagree, becos (because) it's not all d (the) married women that are not faithful to their husbands.

Ademola Segun Adesoji: I believe it is true bcos (because) some tym (time) ago an incident occurred in my town a married woman told her husband when they were fighting that he was not the biological fada (father) of deir (their) children. Imagine!

Olanrewaju Ayejuyo: Women desire for sex and Money is too high in Nigeria.

Tijani Hammed Olalekan: I do not agree. Despite the fact that it is common among most of Nigerian married women that shud (should) not make them the first in the whole world!

Agona Obembe: It takes two to tango. The men these women are unfaithful with are themselves unfaithful. So mathematically the ratio is 1:1. So, Nigerian men are (also) rated as world's most unfaithful men period.

Sanjo Adesegun: I agree with dis (this) fact bcos (because) d (the) rate at which Nigerian women engage in extra marital affairs outside their wedlock is increasing.

Steve Aderemi: I totally disagree. Who did the rating anyway? I recommend anybody desiring a good wife to marry a Nigerian. I'm proud of Nigerian women!

Obajimi Olamilekan Ibrahim: Women where are you? Defend yourselves. For some segxwal immorality is dia (their) problem.

Ogedengbe Muhammed Sikiru: It's a lie.

Obajimi Olamilekan Ibrahim: Condition of 9ja (Nigeria) has let our woman lose dia (their) dignity. From school experience, high school fees turn girls to prostitutes and guys to cultists and armed robbers. Now how do you want ds (this) ppl (people) to be faithful?

Adegbayemu Babalola: What criteria did they use?

Oluwakemi Aluko Ayinde: Who is faithful now in the whole world? Anyway maybe they think so bcos (because) Nigeria had been rated as the most corrupt country. But believe it or not we still have many faithful women in this country.

Hakeem Oyetunji:
Some stupid men caused it, they can't help a young girl for free

Ibitomi Opeyemi Elias:
Where did they get this finding from?

Olawuyi Funmi: Judge no one" says the Lord.

Okerinde Peter: Which city did they pick as sample? Their conclusion is faulty!

Bankole Stephen: Oluyemi Its d (the) condition of d (the) country dat (that) caused it...but my wife is faithful to me ooo.

Ruth Chollom: Who said so and where did they get this information from please be sure of what you are saying before you tell the whole world.

Kehinde Valentine Afolabi:
Agreed. If you woo 50 women in a day at least 40 will consider you Five of those that refused may be afraid that you may know their husbands.

Wale Oduniyi Ariya: They might think so but it might not be so but I am very sure that it is not every woman that is unfaithful and all this is being said against us in Nigeria all because of the present situation we are in.

Adisa Moshood Olaitan: I av (have) a faithful mum and a faithful wife. That's to tell u dat (that) most Nigerian women are faithful.

Aderibigbe Taoheed: My fiancée is faithful to me and my mother is faithful to my father.

Agona Obembe: Whoever reported this statistics has scored F9. Nigerian women are extremely faithful to their spouses even in the face of infidelity on their part. Come to think of it, have you considered the case of a man who has just lost his wife, he cries if at all with one eye open and the other eye sampling from among the mourners who to pick next. It is not so with women. They may never marry again after their spouses are gone.

Suleiman Abdulhakeem: That statement is not true at all, because most of Nigerian women are faithful. Don't look at the bad ones among them to judge.

Olisedeme Chinedu: But I have a faithful girl friend.

Ese Cecillia Otolorin Oresegun: Lie, we are the most decent though there might be a few who are unfaithful. I rate Nigerian married women 99 per cent faithful to their marital vows.

What do you think?

77  Forum / Politics / NIGERIA IN A MESS; DAME JONATHAN & TURAI AT WAR OVER ABUJA JOICY PLOT OF LAND on: 25-07-2012 08:20 PM
The Federal Government yesterday informed an Abuja High Court of its willingness to settle the protracted legal tussle between the incumbent First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan and her predecessor, Hajiya Turai's over a juicy plot of land situated at Cadastral Zone in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Documents before the court showed that the disputed plot of land was duly allocated to Turai's non-governmental organization-Women and Youth Empowerment Foundation (WAYE) by the minister for the FCT with the right of occupancy duly issued to it.

Specifically, the registered trustees of WAYE had applied and were granted an allocation of plot 1,347 at Cadastral Zone after paying N184.529, 438 as statutory right of occupancy, which was duly issued by the minister for FCT.

Under the terms of grant, the plaintiff was given three years to develop the property based on approved building plans.

After the payments of the various levies, the plaintiff paid additional sum of N76, 936,210.00 as building plan fees after which the grant and approval of the building plans were made and given in line with the master plan for Abuja.

Thereafter, the plaintiff appointed and mobilized a building company, Al-Cooks Nigeria Limited to site to develop the property for the sum of N13, 516,013,797.58.

On November 1, 2011, the Federal Capital Territory Administration sent an additional bill of N18, 529,438 being the balance of the various charges under the grant which the plaintiff paid the next day.

Shortly after these transactions, the minister for the FCT, without reasons, issued a notice of revocation of the said property which it allocated to the plaintiff for the purpose of building public institution (training/vocational centre). The said letter of revocation was backdated with effect from October 27, 2011.

Immediately after the revocation letter was issued, the FCT Minister, Bala Muhammed swiftly re-allocated the plot to another organization, African First Ladies Peace Centre, to which by the current first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, is believed to be a sponsor.

It was at this stage that Turai's organization went to court to challenge the actions of the minister with respect to the revocation letter.

Before Justice Peter Affen, it sought and obtained a restraining order barring the minister and the administration of the FCT, the Abuja Geographical Information System (AGIS) and the attorney general of the federation from carrying out further activities at the site.

However, while the order of the court was still subsisting, the defendants, in defiance of the said order mobilized people to site to commence construction work.

Faced with this act of arbitrariness, counsel to WAYE, Innocent Lagi went back to the court and initiated contempt proceedings against the respective defendants.

But in a desperate attempt to frustrate the hearing of the contempt proceedings, the office of the attorney general of the federation, last Friday approached the court with a motion seeking to vacate the said order.

Justice Affen, however, asked the AGF to put the necessary parties on notice and adjourned the matter till yesterday.

When the matter was called yesterday, counsel from the chambers of the AGF, Baba Sa'idu informed the court of government's willingness to settle the matter amicably out of court.

He added that already, his client had reached out to all the counsel to the parties before the court.

His position was corroborated by counsel to the FCT minister, the FCT Administration and AGIS, Felix Ibanga, just as the plaintiff's counsel, Lagi also confirmed the development.

Meanwhile, the case has been adjourned till September 24, 2012 for report of settlement
