STORY HIGHLIGHTS
NSA says it monitors other countries' economic activities
Israel says spying on its officials is unacceptable
U.S. has said it is reaching out to its allies
President Obama is reviewing recommendations for changes to surveillance procedures

(CNN) -- Israel reacted angrily Sunday to recent reports that British and U.S. intelligence officials spied on top Israeli officials' e-mails.

"The tracking after prime ministers and defense ministers is not legitimate and not acceptable to us," the spokesman of Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz said, according to a CNN translation. "There is an intelligence alliance between (the United States and Israel) at an unprecedented level, and we are sharing the most sensitive (intelligence) material."

On Friday, The Guardian, The New York Times and Der Spiegel newspapers reported that the communications of more than 1,000 organizations and individuals were monitored from a facility in southwest England.
3  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 10,000 carolers respond to girl's wish on: 25-12-2013 06:55 PM

(CNN) -- A little girl whose Christmas wish inspired thousands of people to sing in the streets died overnight.

Laney Brown, 8, suffered from leukemia.

"Our little angel on earth earned her pink glittery angel wings in heaven," a post on an official Facebook page about her said. "She took her last breath at home in her bed at 3:10 surrounded by all her family and friends. I miss her so much already."

Delaney Brown of West Reading, Pennsylvania, "inspired a community and touched hearts across the world," as CNN affiliate WFMZ put it.

She loved music and dancing.

Her dying wishes were to meet country music superstar Taylor Swift and for some people to come by her house for a night of caroling.

On Friday -- her birthday -- Laney and Swift video-chatted through FaceTime, a software application that allows callers to see each other on Apple products.

Then, Saturday night, the singers came. At first it was hundreds of people, then thousands. Then it was about 10,000, CNN affiliate WFMZ reported.

She was too weak to go to the window, but heard the wonderful music.

"I can hear you now!!! Love you!" she said in a Facebook post that showed a photo of her lying in bed with a breathing mask -- and two thunbs up.

Laney was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia seven months ago. Last week doctors told her family that she had 70% cancer cells in her blood. She came home from the hospital Thursday.

The Christmas carol celebration outside her home attracted people from all over. Her dance team was there to honor her. Even Santa showed up.

Many of the singers held back tears.

"I can't even express how I feel," Krysta Rebe, who has a daughter Laney's age, told WFMZ.

It was only an hour of singing, but it lifted the spirits of everyone who jammed the block.

"As much as I want that miracle to be saving the life of an 8-year-old little girl, Laney, the miracle was an 8-year-old little girl teaching an entire community, town, city and the whole country the true meaning of Christmas," one participant, Marianne Franken, wrote on Facebook."

On Wednesday, thousands of people liked and commented on the Facebook post announcing the little girl's death.

"I do not cry for Laney, who lives on in peace and happiness with our Lord," wrote Cornell Stornbergh. "I mourn for us, who now have to live in a world without her."
4  Forum / Relationships & Romance / 10 Facts About AIDS and HIV Infection on: 25-12-2013 06:26 PM

If you're not quite sure what's up with AIDS these days, don't feel alone. Misconceptions and falsehoods concerning AIDS and HIV abound. The following facts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) can help you learn more about the disease and its virus, and what you can do to protect yourself.

1. AIDS stands for acquired immune deficiency syndrome, a condition in which the body's immune system is slowly but ultimately destroyed.

2. AIDS is caused by infection with the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. Infection with HIV is preventable.

3. HIV is spread through contact with blood and intimate body fluids from a person infected with the virus. This contact comes primarily through segxwal relations, needle or syringe sharing, and transfusions of infected blood or blood clotting factors. A pregnant woman can also pass on the virus to her unborn child. An infected woman who is Bosom -feeding can also pass the virus on to the infant. There is no evidence of HIV transmission through insects, saliva, tears or sweat.

Protect yourself

4. You can protect yourself almost completely from HIV infection by correctly using latex condoms every time you have honeypotl, anal or oral sex. (You don't need protection if you are in a committed monogamous relationship with someone who you are sure is not HIV-positive.) You can also protect yourself by not sharing needles.

5. HIV isn't spread through casual contact. You can't get HIV by shaking hands, hugging or sharing restrooms, equipment, food utensils or drinking fountains.

6. Medical tests detect antibodies to HIV. These antibodies, found in the bloodstream, are the immune system's attempt to eliminate the virus. Antibodies can be detected about six to 12 weeks after infection with HIV. When antibodies are present in someone's blood, that person is said to be "HIV-positive," which means he or she is infected with the virus. The most common test is a blood test called enzyme immunoassay (EIA). A positive EIA test must be confirmed with a test such as a Western blot. EIA tests can be used to test saliva and urine, as well as blood. You can also test yourself at home. The home test kit, which collects a sample of your blood from a finger prick, is available from pharmacies.

7. Most HIV-positive people live normal, active lives for some years after infection. Not everyone who is HIV-positive develops AIDS, the most advanced stages of HIV infection, but most people do. For many HIV-positive people, symptoms serious enough to constitute an AIDS diagnosis begin to appear eight to 10 years after infection. In AIDS, the immune system is so damaged by HIV that the body cannot fight off infections with common bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and other microbes that generally do not affect healthy people.

Many affected

8. The epidemic affects people of all ages, races and segxwal preferences. According to 2007 statistics from the CDC and NIAID, the largest group of people with HIV/AIDS are men who have sex with men, followed by adults and adolescents infected through heterosegxwal contact. The epidemic is growing most rapidly among minority populations. It is a leading killer of African American males ages 13 to 24. AIDS affects nearly 10 times more African Americans and three times more Hispanic Americans than whites. In recent years, an increasing number of African American women and children have been affected by HIV/AIDS.

9. Assessing and taking responsibility for your behavior and educating yourself about HIV and AIDS are the keys to protecting yourself and your partners from HIV infection.

10. There's no cure for AIDS, but new medications such as protease inhibitors can significantly slow the progression of the disease.

5  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Why boys need girls as friends on: 20-12-2013 05:59 PM
As a child, I could not think of anything worse than being friends with a boy. And sadly it looks like plenty of men and women still feel that way. Sociologist Lisa Wade has written about her research for Salon, which shows that in the US, heterosegxwal men tend to have very few friends, and the relationships they have with other men provide less emotional support than their wives or girlfriends. This piece comes just a few days after an NSPCC study showing that young boys and girls struggle to maintain friendships because they’re teased and pressured to turn a platonic relationship into a romantic or segxwal one. It’s no wonder boys struggle to make friends – just who are they supposed to be friends with?

Ex-President Obasanjo wrote his ‘Before It Is Too Late’ finger-pointing treatise against President Jonathan and many have hastily applauded without hearing the other side. Some say, his ‘Before it’s too late’ is already late. Earlier, Speaker Tambuwal had presented Jonathan’s administration as not good enough to fight corruption. Good too. But only to the extent that he be found clean when the gong goes

Somebody need help now:
''My boyfriend and I have been dating for 2 years, im 21 and hes 23.. The first year was great we were so in love and he was happy because he could spend money on me and he likes to make my day super nice whenever he takes me out.. He lives in an apartment with his brothers and I live with my parents coz Im not allowed to move out yet :/ anyway for the first year, because he didnt have a girl to spend on before me, most of the money he worked for would be in his bank, so when he met me, he had saved some money to which he spent A LOT when he would take me out 4 times a week and buy me presents etc. So since the beginning of the second year of our relationship, all the money he saved ran out and he ended up taking me out once a week.. I offered and offered to pay but he refuses to even leave his house and when I tell him I only want to see him no money is needed to be spent he tells me to be quiet and that he would never do that to me :/ well now that we have established his personality I dont know what to do because I havent seen him in 2 weeks as he lost his job and has nothing, again I offered but he said no coz he already borrowed money from me to pay for his and his brother's apartment rent last month as they were all broke but theyd pay me back next month.. Anyway i dont know what to do i havent seen him for so long its been so difficult this year we dont see each other often because he refuses to see me without money''

10  Forum / Relationships & Romance / Women and drinking: Time to talk risks on: 8-12-2013 11:16 PM
:

• Liver damage. Women develop liver inflammation more quickly, with less alcohol, than men do.

• Heart disease. While light drinking is good for aging hearts, heavy drinking harms the heart muscle.

• Bosom  cancer. Women who have one drink a day have a 10% higher risk than non-drinkers, and the risk rises as women drink more.

• Pregnancy harm. During pregnancy, any amount of drinking is risky, and heavy drinking puts a fetus at risk for learning, behavioral and other problems.

• Alcohol dependence. Women who drink more than seven drinks a week or more than three drinks on any day are considered at risk; for men, the limits are 14 drinks a week or four drinks on any day.

• Death, injury and abuse. Alcohol is a factor in 60% of homicides, half of segxwal assaults and 40% of suicides, fatal car crashes and fatal falls.

Glaser says she still drinks her one or two glasses of wine each evening and doesn't want to deprive other women who can safely and happily do the same. But, she says, women should stop to think just how badly they need that wine. "You shouldn't be racing for it as if it is first aid."

1. He talks about himself all the time

Men tend not to have interpersonal dramas that are sometimes entertaining to hear about. To avoid being bored to death listening to tales of his office job, remove yourself from the situation.

2. He is incapable of making plans

The incapable planner never makes or sticks to plans with you because he always has something “fabulous” (that’s really not fabulous) to do or he’s expecting something better to come up.

3. He has no interest in trying to get your friends to like him.

He will show up to the bar and expect you to get excited at the sight of him. But he is not interested in chatting with your girlfriends.

4. He seizes every opportunity to imply that he is very important

He is constantly talking about this “hot club” he went to or the time he went out with a celebrity.

5. He assumes you are sitting around waiting for his phone call

He will snidely remind you of it every time “the future” arises in conversation.
