Forum / Politics / After Birthers demand Obama's placenta |
on: 20-04-2011 07:30 PM
| Due to controversy surrounding the President Barrack Obama citizenship, a new fringe group informally known as "Afterbirthers" demanded Monday the authentication of Barack Obama's placenta from his time inside his mother's womb. "All we are asking is that the president produce a sample of his fetal membranes and vessels—preferably along with a photo of the crowning and deliver and this will all be over," said former presidential candidate and Afterbirthers spokesman Alan Keyes, later adding that his organization would be willing to settle for a half-liter of maternal cord plasma. " To this day, the American people have not seen a cervical mucus plug, let alone one that has been signed and notarized by a state-certified Hawaiian health official. If the president was indeed born in the manner in which he claims, then where is his gestation sac?" Keyes said that if Obama did not soon produce at least a bloody bedsheet from his conception, Afterbirthers would push forward with efforts to exhume the president's deceased mother and inspect the corpse's pelvic bone and birth canal. Forum / Politics / Barrack Obama gets snippy with Texas TV reporter |
on: 20-04-2011 07:28 PM
| Barrack Obama gets snippy with Texas TV reporter - Ahead of next year's (US) United States presidential election, the White House has launched a concerted effort to leap over national media and reach out to local journalists in hopes of receiving more favorable coverage. But that effort may have backfired a bit yesterday, when President Barrack Obama was caught on camera testily reprimanding a Texas reporter for apparently not giving him sufficient time to answer questions. "Let me finish my answers the next time we do an interview, all right?" Obama told Brad Watson, a reporter with Belo TV, which owns several Texas TV stations including Dallas's WFAA and San Antonio's KENS. The interview, one of four Obama conducted with local TV reporters Monday, had already been a bit heated by that moment. "Why do you think you're so unpopular in Texas?" Watson asked Obama, at one point. The president replied by acknowledging that Texas had long been a "pretty Republican state," but he implied that the politics there were changing, adding that he'd only lost by a "few percentage points" in 2008. But that statement, as Watson noted, wasn't exactly true. Obama actually lost Texas to John McCain by 11 points during the last campaign as pointed out by the reporter Source: http://factaboutafrica.blogspot.com/2011/04/barrack-obama-snippy-brad-watson.html | | |

Forum / Politics / We’ll defend Jonathan, Niger Delta ex-militants vow |
on: 19-04-2011 11:43 AM
| Niger Delta ex-militants have vowed to defend the mandate of President Goodluck Jonathan with their blood should the emerging crisis from the Northern part of the country threaten the President’s victory at the polls. The Niger Delta ex-militant leaders were quick to warn: “We want all Nigerians and the international community to understand that if a Niger Deltan cannot be accepted to legitimately govern Nigeria despite our contribution to the economic well-being of the country, we shall not allow a non-Niger Deltan to rule over our resources.” The militants, numbering 24, rose from their meeting, condemning “in very strong terms, the post election violence being perpetrated and sponsored in parts of northern Nigeria by disgruntled politicians and crises-profiteers. “We regard the outbreak of violent protests as uncalled for, barbaric and very retrogressive. But we dare assert that this sponsored violence does not in any way mirror or reflect the inner feelings of overwhelming majority of the northern masses. “The northern masses, just like their brothers and sisters in the South, particularly the Niger Delta, are victims of years of misrule under the same persons orchestrating the post-election violence across the north.” In a communique entitled: “We Shall Defend Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s Mandate With the last drop of our blood,” the militants called on the “long suffering northern masses to resist the negative, selfish and self-serving antics of the political jobbers who are behind the political violence across the north. We urge the northern masses to challenge these crises profiteers to withdraw their sons and daughters from their expensive schools abroad to join the riots that they are instigating.” The communiqué reads: “We, the leaders, former Generals and Commanders of defunct combatant camps and groups in the Niger Delta met today, Monday 18th April 2011 where we extensively deliberated on crucial national issues, especially the outcome of the presidential elections held last weekend and resolve as follows: “1. To Congratulate the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Atahiru Jega for successfully conducting what has gone down in history as the fairest and freest presidential election in the history of Nigeria. We however urge him to speedily declare the formal final result of the presidential election which is already well known to all Nigerians “2. We congratulate His Excellency, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR, for being the first sitting President of Nigeria to have conducted a transparently free, fair and credible election even while he stood the risk of losing at the polls. We note that it is the first time a sitting President has fully funded the Independent National Electoral Commission without interfering whatsoever in the commission’s affairs. “3. We also congratulate Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for winning, most resoundingly, last Saturday’s Presidential election. We are urging those who lost at the presidential polls to accept the result which indeed is the verdict of the people of our great country they themselves aspired to govern. They must also accept the verdict of God who alone bestows leadership on who He deems fit. God Almighty has chosen Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as Nigeria’s leader for the next four years and this fact must be respected by all “4. We condemn in very strong terms, the post election violence being perpetrated and sponsored in parts of northern Nigeria by disgruntled politicians and crises_profiteers. We regard the outbreak of violent protests as uncalled_for, barbaric and very retrogressive. But we dare assert that this sponsored violence does not in any way mirror or reflect the inner feelings of overwhelming majority of the northern masses. The northern masses, just like their brothers and sisters in the south, particularly the Niger Delta, are victims of years of misrule under the same persons orchestrating the post_election violence across the north. Because the northern masses share similar deprivation as their southern compatriots, they thronged voting centres in their respective wards last Saturday to vote for change, to vote for a fresh and better start, they voted for Dr. Jonathan who we all know is all too poised to pave the way for a better future for our great country “5. We call on the long suffering northern masses to resist the negative, selfish and self_serving antics of the political jobbers who are behind the political violence across the north. We urge the northern masses to challenge these crises profiteers to withdraw their sons and daughters from their expensive schools abroad to join the riots that they are instigating “6. We urge our brothers and sisters in the south, especially Niger Deltans to see what is happening in the North as merely bait or trap to join the fray. We must resist this temptation even when we have the capacity and capability to retaliate violence in any form or shape. Instead of succumbing to this temptation, we wish to thank all Nigerians for the national mandate they have given our dear brother, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. We note that because of the overwhelming support of Nigerians irrespective of region, tribe, tongue, religion, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has become the product of the freest and fairest election in Nigeria. “7. We affirm that we shall not retaliate any violence targeted at us, at least for now. We are however calling on the international community as well as all men and women of good conscience to promptly prevail on this political jobbers who are stoking the embers of war across the north to sheath swords given that the consequences of their action would most likely endanger the unity of this country. We are proud to say that since independence, the people of the Niger Delta have nurtured and nourished Nigeria with our God_given natural and human resources. And since 1960, a section of this country has consistently produced either the President or Head of State of our nation and the people of Niger Delta, the goose that lay the golden eggs, have consistently backed the north and continued to water the seed of unity and development of the country. We are piqued that for once, an eminently qualified Niger Deltan has won the freest and fairest presidential election in Nigeria and some crises_profiteers in the north are sponsoring violent protests. It is so sad and regrettable. “8. We are solidly behind the Nigerian mandate given Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and we shall join the teeming populace of Nigerians to defend the mandate with the last drop of our blood. On this score, we are calling all ethnic nationalities in the south of this country to temporarily return home for communal consultations as we await keenly the direction things will go in Nigeria in the next 48 hours. Similarly we have directed all our Generals and commanders to retreat to their communities and points and await further instructions in the next 48 hours. “9. We are also calling on the National Security Adviser and all security agencies to secure the lives and properties of all northerners and southerners alike in all parts of the country so as to avoid the escalation of the post_election crisis. We wish to remind them that it is their responsibility to stop those who hide under whatever guise to perpetrate criminality. Indeed we know for sure that if the ugly events playing out across the north had happened in the Niger Delta, the nation’s security agencies would have brought to bear the full weight of the law, including even the declaration of a state of emergency. “10. We commensurate with the families of the victims of the dastardly political violence in some parts of the North. We console those who have lost loved ones and heard_earned property and pray that the Good Lord who aided the emergence of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as the popularly elected President of Nigeria will replenish their loses in record time. “11. Very importantly, we want all Nigerians and the international community to understand that if a Niger Deltan cannot be accepted to legitimately govern Nigeria despite our contribution to the economic well_being of the country, we shall not allow a non_Niger Deltan to rule over our resources. Forum / Politics / Violence across northern states after Presidential Election |
on: 19-04-2011 11:39 AM
| Violence sparked in Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kano, Adamawa, and Zaria after the landslide election victory of President Goodluck Jonathan over the local favourite, Muhammadu Buhari, the retired army general and former military head of state. In Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kano, Adamawa, and Zaria, the homes of leading traditional rulers and politicians were razed to the ground as the youth attacked people they considered to be oppressors. The residence of Vice President Namadi Sambo, located at Baba Ahmed Road, Tudun Wada, Zaria, was reportedly burnt down and his Kaduna home saved from a similar fate by the quick intervention of his security officers. In Gombe, one of the places where the riots started, a group almost succeeded in burning down the house of the state governor, Danjuma Goje. Their attempts were foiled but those who went to the campaign office of Governor Isah Yuguda succeeded in burning down the place and destroying several vehicles belonging to PDP agents. The rioters also blocked the main Ahmadu Bello Way leading to the Sa'adu Zungur Model School which served as a collation centre for the presidential election. In Kano, which seemed to have witnessed the worst of this anger against people previously held in high esteem, the palace of the emir of Kano, in Dorayi, was burnt down. The home of the former speaker of the House of Representatives, Umar Ghali Na'abba - once a beacon of radicalism for northern youth - was set on fire. Bashir Tofa, seen as a PDP sympathiser, suffered a worse fate, losing both of his homes, and Isiaku Rabiu, considered a sympathizer of President Goodluck Jonathan, had to be evacuated quickly from his home when the mob came calling. The house of the Galadima of Kano, who allegedly distributed money and fabric on behalf of Mr Jonathan, was also burnt down. In Bauchi, irate youth had set the house of the deputy national secretary of the PDP, Musa Babayo, on fire and burnt down the house of the state party chairman, Ibrahim Yaro Yaro. The causes of anger The immediate reason for the rampage in the north had been the announcement that Mr Jonathan practically won the polls. Although the conduct of the election had generally been praised, the results coming out of a few states in the north where pro-Buhari sentiment is strongest, was a major factor in the riots. For instance, in Kaduna State where the CPC was set to rout Mr Sambo's PDP, the result that the party got 1.2 million votes to CPC's 1.3 million shocked Mr Buhari's supporters who considered the margin too narrow and hardly representative of the reality. The fact that Mr Jonathan was able to get the requisite 25 percent in states that are traditionally CPC strongholds and also win between 90 percent and 99 percent of votes in some south-south and southeast states, also made many of them suspicious. While these elections were the last straw that broke the camel's back, it was clear that these riots were also about northern youth who had, for a long time, felt disenfranchised and vested their hopes of change on the candidacy of Mr Buhari, a man considered to be different from the largely corrupt leaders that have ruled over them for decades. None of this justified the violence unleashed in the days following the election. Mr Buhari had, however, not run such an inspiring campaign, according to analysts. His choice of campaigning mainly in his northern stronghold, and making little effort to win the southern votes, was seen by many as a major hindrance. Other analysts say that although his actions may have been interpreted as a snub to the south, it was in fact more an indication of the lack of money available to the Buhari campaign compared to Mr Jonathan's war chest. Who will stem the rage In the past, traditional rulers in the north always exerted remarkable influence on the people. However, with their increasing encroachment into partisan politics, they have all but lost the respect of the people. Most of those who participated in the horrible riots were young people whose future had been circumscribed by poverty, illiteracy and wanton neglect. Forum / Politics / PDP to sanction members in anti-party activities |
on: 17-04-2011 02:14 PM
| The People’s Democratic Party, PDP will set up a body of committee to sanction its members no matter who that engage in anti-party activities during the general elections.
Alhaji Yusuf Ayitogo, the National Vice Chairman of the party for the North-Central Zone, announced this on Saturday in an interview .
Ayitogo spoke against the backdrop of the low performance of his party in the state during the April 9 National Assembly elections.
The ruling party in Nasarawa lost one senatorial seat and three federal constituencies to the opposition Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).
Ayitogo said the party had learnt its lessons and had made corrections, adding that some members of the party engaged in anti-party activities in the state during the polls.
“A committee will be set up at the end of the elections to assess the roles played by members and anyone found to have engaged in any act deemed inimical to the party will be appropriately sanctioned in line with the party’s constitution,” he said.
He also decried the attitude of Nigerian politicians for crying foul whenever they lost an election, describing the situation as “unfortunate”.
Ayitogo advised politicians to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship as demonstrated by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Dimeji Bankole, who conceded defeat and congratulated his opponent when he lost in his bid for a second term.
INEC was also commended for restoring the hope of Nigerians in the electoral process, saying that the 2011 elections had been generally accepted to be credible.

Forum / Politics / Buhari says Don't blame me! |
on: 15-04-2011 11:51 AM
| After bowing out of the presidential race, Mr. Buhari noted that with only a few days to the election, it was foolhardy to change his party's vice presidential candidate. "By the electoral laws, this was virtually impossible before this election. We suggested that they should let us jointly go into the elections and jointly form the government after our victory. But our friends were not ready to take us on our honour and went to the media," he said. In a statement signed by Mr. Buhari's spokesman, Yinka Odumakin, the former head of state said the notion that he was responsible for the inability of his party and the ACN to forge an alliance ahead of Saturday's polls was "baseless and unfounded." He said he was responding to set the record straight and regretted the inability of the parties to harness what he called their electoral fortunes. Not exactly The ACN, on the other hand, continues to blame Mr. Buhari for the missed opportunity. A source at the meeting said the CPC vice presidential candidate, Tunde Bakare, had behaved in a manner that suggested that he had no intention to honour the accord. "We are aware of the electoral act. We did not say they should change their ticket now, but after the election," says an ACN senior official. Although Mr. Bakare agreed to resign after the election, and even to write the resignation letter, he chose to address such a letter in a manner that gives him wiggle room. "It was not a resignation as vice president but a letter addressed to the chairman of the board of trustees of his party offering to resign anytime Buhari is no longer happy with him, which left the room open, as the ACN guys saw it, for not resigning at all," said the source. ‘Nigeria is my client' People have wondered why, in selecting an ACN candidate to be Mr. Buhari's vice president, Bola Tinubu did not deemed it fit to name his party's vice presidential candidate, Fola Adeola. Instead, Mr. Tinubu named three others: Yemi Osinbajo, a former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Mr. Tinubu's administration; Yemi Cardoso, who was Mr. Tinubu's budget commissioner; and a former Lagos State finance commissioner, Wale Edun. However, Mr. Adeola said yesterday that he was not particularly bothered by all that. "My selection was to run with Nuhu Ribadu, so once we were going to go with Buhari, it is only right, the party has the right, to look at what was best," Mr. Adeola said. The ACN vice presidential candidate also praised Mr. Ribadu's selflessness and patriotism. "The only client I have in this whole thing is Nigeria. I am proud of the party on whose platform I am running. I am proud of the man I am running with, for his magnanimity and his generosity in agreeing to drop his own ambition and step down for another candidate. I am sorry that the other side decided to scuttle a good chance to win our country back by not agreeing to this simple request for a resignation letter," he said. Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Court Jails 13 Years Old Boy For Throwing Water At Obansajo's Car |
on: 14-04-2011 03:39 PM
| Precious Efurueze a 13-year-old boy, was yesterday denied bail by a chief magistrate court in Owerri for allegedly attempting to kill former president Olusegun Obasanjo and the governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, in Owerri on 31, March, by stoning their campaign convoy with sachets of pure water Master Efurueze is among 18 people charged with attempted murder for participation in the attack on Messrs. Obasanjo and Ohakim. Notable among the accused is Prince Madumere, the chief of staff to the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Rochas Okorocha. At the resumed hearing of the suit yesterday the presiding magistrate, V.C Isiguzo, while delivering ruling on the application for bail for the accused, explained that her court has no jurisdiction on two of the charges because they are punishable by life imprisonment. Mrs. Isiguzo, however, turned down the accused’s request to be granted bail until the conclusion of the substantive suit. The chief magistrate explained that her reason for denying the accused bail is that they had been charged with felony which carries a punishment of life imprisonment if found guilty. She said the offence is a serious one and, therefore, should not be treated lightly. Speaking to newsmen at the end of the court session, Greg Okemiri, the counsel representing the 12th to the 16th accused persons, while expressing his displeasure with the ruling of the magistrate, hinted that the reason the application was denied may be political. He was also angered by the continued detention of Master Efurueze who, he explained, under the law of the country, by virtue of being a minor, is considered incapable of committing a crime. Mr. Okemiri, however, stated that he has taken steps to see that the boy is released soon. The case was adjourned to May 30, for further hearing. “The law describes him as not capable of committing crime yet,” he said. “All these things are in our law. Sometimes I feel very sad that we do not want to do things right. You see someone who the law describes as not capable of committing a crime yet, and you remand him in an adult prison.” http://factaboutafrica.blogspot.com/2011/04/court-denies-precious-efurueze13-year.html#more | | |

Forum / Politics / Saidu Kumo wants special voting day for journalists |
on: 13-04-2011 06:10 PM
| Former National Secretary of ANPP, Saidu Kumo appealed on Tuesday that a special concession be granted to practicing journalists to enable them exercise their franchise. Addressing newsmen in Gombe, Mr Kumo suggested that INEC should set aside a special time for journalists to cast their votes because of "the nature of their job" Mr Kumo said: "The nature of your job is such that you are always far away from your polling unit, carrying out a national assignment on election days.? There is the need for INEC to make a special arrangement that will enable you cast your votes on election days. Such arrangement can be in the form of giving you a special tag that will mandate voting officials to attend to you fast at polling units so that you can leave and go ahead with your duties." Mr Kumo, who is also the ANPP governorship candidate in Gombe, said that another alternative was to set aside a special time or day for journalists to cast their votes and thereafter, concentrate on their vital duties of covering elections. http://factaboutafrica.blogspot.com/2011/04/saidu-kumo-wants-special-voting-day-for.html | | |

Forum / Politics / Anambra Central Senatorial Result Cancelled |
on: 13-04-2011 06:05 PM
| INEC Latest News - The Independent National Electoral Commission has cancelled the result of the senatorial election in Anambra Central Senatorial District. It said a rerun would be fixed for a date to be announced soon. The decision was announced at a press conference in Awka by the newly appointed Returning Officer for Anambra Central, Prof. Charles Esinone. The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Chukwuemeka Onukaogu, also attended the briefing, where he told newsmen that Esinone had been replaced the former RO, Mr. Alex Anene. The major candidates in the election are a former governor of the state, Dr. Chris Ngige (Action Congress of Nigeria); ex-Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili (All Progressives Grand Alliance); and the incumbent, Chief Annie Okonkwo (Accord Party). The declaration of the result ran into a deadlock when Anene said on Sunday that he was being pressurised by officials of the state government and APGA to declare Akunyili as the winner of the poll. He had told newsmen in Awka that the interests promised him a house, scholarship for his children and N10 million if he declared Akunyili as the winner of the election and accepted the 'mutilated' result from Njikoka Local Government Area. He said he rejected the gifts and was quitting the assignment because his conscience would not allow him to announce a mutilated result. Ngige swiftly petitioned INEC, asking it to cancel the result in Anaocha Local Government Area because 22,000 votes were allocated in it to Akunyili. However, at a separate briefing at her campaign office in Awka, Akunyili said that before the election, Anene was arrested with fake poll monitors and later released on bail. She alleged that instead of going to report to the police, Anene called journalists and raised allegations against her party. http://factaboutafrica.blogspot.com/2011/04/anambra-central-senatorial-result.html | | |

on: 9-04-2011 06:23 PM
| The Prophet of Synagogue Church of All Nations Temitope Balogun (TB) Joshua, had predicted that elections may not hold unless very serious prayers were offered. In a story published in P.M.NEWS on 16 March 2011 and titled “Pray For The Election To Hold”, the Man in the Synagogue: as TB Joshua is known by his followers, prophesied that only ‘serious prayers will make April (elections) a reality’. The story reads in part: “With billions of naira already spent by thousands of candidates and many hours invested in campaign trains, a warning by the man who predicted the outcome of the Ghanaian election two years ago may send shivers down the spines of many”. “But, I know that we need a lot of prayers to make April a reality. I said it earlier and you can see what is happening now: bomb blasts all over the place, court cases all over the place and so on. So, like I said, we need a lot of prayers to make April a reality.” In the interview to be published in TheNews magazine, TB Joshua said : "About the upcoming elections, I have said many times that I don’t like talking about Nigeria again because all the messages God has given me about Nigeria, nobody has bothered to come and ask me ‘what are you saying? | About eighty percent of Nigerian students cannot read properly, says Mrs Winihim Jemide, Executive Director, On boarding Impact Consultancy via the outcome of a recent research conducted round the country. Addressing the teachers at the four-day training workshop on quick reading skills in Port Harcourt, she said the whole idea of the workshop was to re-invent the reading culture among pupils and youths in the country. She said the Quick Reading training session for the teachers would equip them with the needed tools to fast track reading ability among their students. She added that teachers would in turn go to their various local government and communities to teach other teachers on the Quick reading approach to enhance reading culture.
