Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Police Arrests Soldier, Others For Armed Robbery |
on: 25-03-2013 01:12 PM
| Police in Aba, Abia state have arrested a soldier Abdulkarim Salawudeen and an 18 year old girl, Ogechi Chibuike for alleged armed robbery at the Osisioma Ngwa section of the Enugu “ Port Harcourt Expressway. Salawudeen, who claimed to be a Lance Corporal with Army number, 98NA/ 47/3484, was alleged to have conspired with Ogechi and others still at large to rob unsuspecting members of the public at odd hours of the day. The girl, Ogechi would stand by the road side at odds hours crying for assistance from road users particularly from 7pm to 11pm and when people stop to assist her, the soldier, Salawudeen and other members of his gang would come out from their hiding in nearby bush with their guns and rob them. Through this strategy, the gang was alleged to have robbed people of their vehicles and other property The Police, who have received several complaints about the operations of the gang, stormed their hideout at a drug joint near the popular Enyimba area on the Expressway and arrested the soldier and Ogechi while other members of gang are still at large. Items recovered from them include 16 Army camouflage uniforms, 3 ear rings, assorted GSM cards, Citizen bank Identity card belonging to one Ngozi Njoku as well as a Citizen bank Cheque book bearing the name of Onwumere Okechukwu. Sources hint that Salawudeen who hails from Kogi state was a serving soldier in 93 Battalion, Takum, Taraba state but deployed to an Army formation in Abia state. Salawudeen is also said to have series of disciplinary cases which necessitated his return to his Battalion but he rather chose to abscond and form a robbery gang.
The lady member of the gang, Ogechi who hails from Agburuike Nsulu in Isiala Ngwa North Local government Area of Abia state stated that the soldier instructed her dress half naked and shout for help from road users. “He told me to stand on the roadside and call for help as anybody who sees me will stop. When I stand on the road and shout for help, people will stop to know what happened to me and he will come out with his Army uniform and rob them. Sometimes, he will tell me to be half naked to attract people. He told me that with his uniform, nobody will say anything. After operations, he gives N400. There was one we carried out at Ama Hausa, he gave me N500,”Ogechi said.

Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Bishop David Oyedepo Launches A New Airline |
on: 22-03-2013 02:12 PM
| Nigeria’s richest pastor and self-styled bishop, David Oyedepo, has made a glistening addition to his business empire by floating an airline called Dominion Air. Oyedepo, who a few years ago ignited debate on flamboyant Christianity by acquiring his fourth private jet, is the owner of Dominion Publishing House, Covenant University and an elite secondary school called Faith Academy. Listed by Forbes as Nigeria’s wealthiest pastor with a net worth of $150 million, David Oyedepo is a preacher and founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, more popularly known as Winners’ Chapel. Besides his four private jets, Forbes also mentioned the preacher’s luxury homes in London and the United States. Sources within the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), the agency charged with business registration in Nigeria, confirmed the registration of Dominion Air with David Oyedepo as its chairman. Another source within a Lagos-based insurance firm known to handle most of Oyedepo’s businesses said the airline project had been in the works for six years and was only made a reality this year.
In a swift reaction, Lawrence Ofili, a member of the Save Nigeria Group (SNG), “Pastor Oyedepo by his choice of businesses has severally demonstrated a disconnect between himself and hundreds of thousands of poor Christians who he claimed to have come to deliver. About 90 per cent of public schools in this country were built by early Christian missionaries; today Oyedepo has Covenant University but it is for children of millionaires,” says Mr Ofili.
“Even with the high school called Faith Academy, I am aware that most children in his congregation dream to be educated there but their parents who probably pay tithes and offerings cannot afford the school fees. His Faith Tabernacle accommodates 50,000 worshippers every Sunday; how many of them are going to fly Dominion Air? Honestly this project is not for the poor. He should have settled for mechanised farming to engage unemployed men and women.”

Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Boat Carrying 166 Passengers capsizes in Calabar, only 2 survived |
on: 20-03-2013 08:49 AM
| The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that a wooden boat carrying 166 people about 40 nautical miles off the coast of Calabar capsized on Tuesday with only two known survivors. The boat which left on Friday from the remote town of Oron, in Cross River state was heading to Gabon.
David Akate, the Assistant Director, Information, Cross River Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the incident to National Mirror.
As at yesterday, the mood at the morgue of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH, where 45 corpses of some of the victims have been deposited was that of gloom and people thronged the hospital to try to identify the remains of loved ones.
Official sources said the victims’ corpses were brought to Calabar instead of Malabo, where the mishap occurred, because they were believed to be Nigerians.
A Marine Transporter at the Calabar Inland Waterways, Ikechukwu Egwu confirmed the incident to National Mirror adding that the passengers of the boat were mostly Igbo traders who were travelling to Gabon. He said they boarded the wooden boat because it was cheaper.
How sad. May their souls Rest in Peace.
