I think there is a big difference during the time of Old Testament to the New Testament. During the Time of Christ (New Testament) the Mosaic Law was abolished and it was replaced with higher commandments which Jesus himself gave. Nowadays, we are living under the higher law and it is not really advised to follow the older commandments.

The bible is an inspired collection of books written by prophets and apostles of God. There we can read the gospel of Christ even his very life. I believe God continuously gives revelations which are more applicable to our time. I think this is the missing part.
 

I really like that story. I have read read couple of times and still touched by the loving attitude of a father. We should always think that God is our Father and He is willing to give us the things we desired if it is for us.
