Forum / Sports / Nigeria due in Brazil on Saturday after pay row |
on: 14-06-2013 01:34 PM
| WINDHOEK (Reuters) - Nigeria are due to arrive in Brazil on Saturday to take part in the Confederations Cup, 24 hours later than scheduled, after a row over bonus payments saw the squad holed up in a Namibia hotel on Thursday. A telephone call between FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke and an unnamed Nigerian official broke the impasse after the 23-man squad refused to travel to the tournament in a strike action designed to force the hand of their federation. "I've spoken with the team manager and they will be in the plane on Saturday and they will arrive for the Confederations Cup. The problem is solved," Valcke told a news conference in Rio de Janeiro, when asked about the problem. Nigeria's squad were supposed to leave Windhoek, one day after drawing 1-1 with hosts Namibia in a World Cup qualifier, for Johannesburg to connect with a flight to Brazil, where they are representing Africa at the eight-team, two-week tournament. But the players refused to leave the hotel in a row over promised payments for points garnered in two World Cup qualifiers against Kenya and Namibia over the last week. Bonuses had been cut in half from $10,000 to $5,000 by the Nigerian Football Federation, local soccer sources said, in what was presented as a cost-cutting measure but the players refused to accept new terms and decided to strike. "They are declining to leave," Namibia FA general secretary Barry Rukoro told Reuters earlier on Thursday. "They were supposed to go at 11 a.m. this morning but they say they are owed money by their association and want it sorted before they will leave the hotel. "Their officials all departed on an earlier flight this morning but the players and the technical staff are still here." Nigeria are due to play their first game in the tournament against Tahiti in Belo Horizonte on Monday but will have little time to acclimatise to the conditions. It is the second major controversy to rock Nigeria since they won the African Nations Cup in South Africa in February. Coach Stephen Keshi resigned the day after they won the title, telling South African radio station Metro FM there were continual efforts by unnamed officials to undermine his work. However, he was persuaded to quickly change his mind in a tawdry affair that took some of the gloss off Nigeria's triumph. Striker actions are nothing new in Africa and are used as a tactic by players desperate to secure promised payments. http://news.yahoo.com/nigeria-due-brazil-saturday-pay-row-063254222.html | | |

Forum / Sports / Sex and the Prince - Boateng knocked out |
on: 19-06-2012 08:27 PM
| AC Milan have confirmed that Ghanaian midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng will be out of action for up to a month due to a thigh injury. But his girlfriend has claimed his antics in bed may be the cause of his constant injury. Melissa Satta, who Kevin-Prince has been dating for a while, described their sex life and attributed that to his niggles. Melissa Satta said: "The reason why he is always injured is because we have sex 7-10 times a week" AC Milan have not commented on the matter, but they did issue a statement to validate his injury. Boateng, whose fellow countrymen begin their the African Cup of Nations participation early next week, injured himself during last weekend's 1-0 defeat to Inter. A statement from the Rossoneri read: "Boateng has sustained a muscular lesion in his left thigh and the estimated time of recovery is around four weeks, unless there are complications." The 24-year-old will likely be sidelined for Milan's next eight games, including their Champions League Last-16 home leg against Arsenal on February 15. Boss Massimiliano Allegri has set his sights on the attacking player's return for his side's domestic encounter against Juventus on February 26. http://www.supersport.com/football/ghana/news/120120/Sex_and_the_Prince_Boateng_knocked_out | | |

Forum / Relationships & Romance / Naison Zulu, 72-year-old man jailed for molesting his 94-year-old mother |
on: 16-12-2011 11:59 PM
| In a bizarre incident that has left villagers in Dete shell-shocked, a 72-year-old man was convicted for molesting his 94-year-old mother. Naison Zulu of Stand number 49 Mtuya township in Dete was found guilty of contravening section 65 of Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act chapter 9:23 rape, when he appeared before Regional Magistrate Mrs Dambudzo Malunga. According to the State led by Miss Memory Munsaka, on 7 July 2011 at around 10 pm Zulu gained entry into his mother, Alice Dube’s bedroom hut while she slept. He got into her blankets and lay on top of her. Dube woke up and asked him what he was doing, whereupon Zulu used one hand to cover her mouth while the other forced her legs apart. He proceeded to rape her once. She managed to cry out for help and a neighbour came to her rescue finding Zulu still in the bedroom. In his defence, Zulu who is the first born in the family denied molesting his mother saying he was awakened by her shouts. He said he responded from his hut by asking what the matter was but received no answer. It was only later that he decided to investigate but after hearing his calling from the neighbour’s house he returned to sleep. After 20 minutes he claimed two men began to assault him after he responded to their knock, accusing him of molesting his mother. However, during cross-examination Zulu shifted goalposts arguing that he delayed in responding to his mother’s shouts for help because he got angry that she had called out to her neighbour instead of him. The State however proved beyond reasonable doubt that Zulu had indeed raped his mother. He was slapped with a 15-year prison term. http://news2.onlinenigeria.com/news/top-stories/127965-naison-zulu-72-year-old-man-jailed-for-molesting-his-94-year-old-mother.html | | |

Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Undergraduate victim of acid bath cries out for help |
on: 29-10-2011 01:33 AM
| Franca Ogbu, a 22-year-old student of Federal University of Technology, Yola, Adamawa State, used to be the cynosure of all eyes . In fact, several suitors have reportedly sought her hand in marriage, a request she often rejected politely, on the ground that she must at least, be in the university before thinking about marriage.
But when her desire of going to school was fulfilled last year, with it came an unfortunate incident that has currently crippled the life of the once beautiful girl. As you read this piece, the Benue State-born is lying critically ill at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, looking a shadow of her old self.
Franca, described as a promising child eventually had her dreams come through after she was offered admission into the Federal University of Technology, Yola, to study Economics. As she bade her parents goodbye, beaming with smiles and a mixed feeling of pains of missing her parents, she left with the little food stuffs her parents managed to get for her.
Franca... at the hospital bed
But her joy was short lived, six months into her education following an acid bath by a male student. Franca, according to the University authority, had on that fateful day, gone to class where she was reading, when all of a sudden, an incident that changed the entire course of her life happened.
Two students reportedly stormed the class. One of them was said to have walked up to the unsuspecting student who at the same time, raised up her head to see who the intruder was, only for the intruder to pour a liquid substance later discovered to be acid on her face.
Explaining, the Zonal Coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Technology, Yola branch, Dr Usman Abubakar, alleged that one Chibuzor Bright was responsible. His action, he said, followed Franca’s objection to his several advances.
Speaking with Crime Guard, Dr Usman said, “Franca Ogbu Adima Paul, is a part I Economics student of Federal University of Technology, Yola (now Modibbo Adama University of Technology). Until the 5th of May, 2010, she was very normal. On that early morning, at about 1.15am, she was reading in the Mechanical Engineering Block of the Institution, in preparation for her examinations when suddenly, someone standing in front of her called her name and on raising her face up, she was spilled with concentrated acid. She is currently in the surgical ward of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. The acid affected her head, face, chest, hand and mouth.”
Chibuzor , a final year Civil Engineering student, was alleged to have sponsored the dastardly act by using one Nelson who poured the acid. Already, it was learnt that the School authority has dismissed him after which he was subsequently arrested .
Franca has been lying on
the hospital bed for over one year with her face disfigured, owing to her parent’s inability to get the required amount of money to carry out a plastic surgery on her. Her parents who are peasant farmers have lost hope of their first daughter returning to her normal self. Presently, their greatest worry is not just the fact that the incident has incapacitated their daughter but the painful fact that the alleged assailant is said to be walking the streets freely.
For Franca to get back on her feet and carry on with her education, she needs the sum of N12 million for the surgery. So far, the Bauchi zone of ASUU comprising eight Universities in the North-Eastern Nigeria, as gathered, launched a campaign to raise the needed money to save Franca, with an account opened at the Fidelity Bank UNIMAID Branch. The account number is 6051446636 and the project account name is FRANCA TREATMENT.
The national body of ASUU which condemned the act in its entirety had, during one of its meetings in Ibadan , Oyo state, described the act as ‘a brutal act typically, man’s inhumanity to a fellow human being’”, calling on all well -meaning and sympathetic Nigerians, philanthropists and Civil Society Organizations, to contribute generously towards getting Franca back on her feet.
The hospital, as reliably gathered, had carried about 11 surgical operations on Franca for free. But she reportedly has 13 more operations to go, a financial burden too heavy for the parents to bear.
They therefore called on well meaning Nigerians to come to their rescue.
