42  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigeria's Olubayo Adefemi dies in Greece car accident on: 18-04-2011 07:20 PM
Nigeria international defender Olubayo Adefemi has died in a car accident, Greek police said on Monday.

The 25-year-old, who played for Skoda Xanthi, lost control of his car on the Egnatia motorway before the crash.

Adefemi was driving from Xanthi to Salonika in the Kavala region of northern Greece.

The former Rapid Bucharest player was on his way to Nigeria to finalise details of his wedding when the accident happened, police said.

"The Super League and the entire Greek football family would like to express its deepest condolences and sympathy for the family of Olubayo Adefemi who died tragically in a car accident," league organisers said in a statement on Monday.

Adefemi's Zambian team-mate and friend Chris Katongo says Xanthi players were in shock when they heard news of the death of the popular player.

"It was a good day and all the players were laughing and joking when the manager came in and broke the news. Everyone is in shock," Katongo told BBC Sport.

"Even as I am speaking I am thinking it is a joke but it is true. I can't believe this.

"He was a good person, he likes to joke and likes to laugh. It is the reason why he got along with everyone and was well liked.

"He was like a brother to me because we shared the same room during team camping. It is a big loss to me and the entire Xanthi team."

Adefemi's car skidded off the highway in Kavala in bad weather conditions before crashing into a barrier, killing him instantly.

"For the past three of four days in that part of Greece the weather has been terrible and unfamiliar with the country," Greek sports journalist Christos Sotirakopoulos told BBC Sport.

"The road has been slippery with heavy rains and in some cases heavy snow which is quite unusual for Greece."

Meanwhile, Skoda Xanthi will organise a friendly match in the memory of the Nigerian defender to raise fund to support his family.

"His team have already said that they will organise a game in his memory to send some money to his family in Africa," Sotirakopoulos

Adefemi signed for Xanthi last summer and made 24 appearances for the club, scoring twice.

He has also played five times for Nigeria.

46  Forum / The Buzz Central / Cynthia Agholor In Naked Fight With Cossy Orjiakor? on: 26-03-2011 12:04 AM
Nollywood actress, has come out to deny reports that she engaged in a physical fight with the booby actress Cossy Orjiakor over a man.

A soft-sell magazine reported some time ago, that the fair complexioned actress fought, while naked with the queen of boobs over a boyfriend.

But reacting to that reports, years after it made headlines  while speaking with NollywoodGossip, an online media, Agholor said “ I never did that. Cossy is my friend. Why should I  fight her over a man? I can’t do that.

It was a terrible lie. ”

“There is  no element of truth in the report. Lots of people on Facebook wrote to ask me about it. How would I be telling everyone that it’s wrong, it’s not true? How many people would I explain to that it’s a lie?

I’m sure somebody would look at me and say ‘that fighter that gets naked whenever she fights.’ I just hope that people will understand that these things are not true.”

50  Forum / Sports / Nigeria Under Pressure To Bring Back Ike Uche on: 5-03-2011 01:16 AM
After scoring a the winning goal in Zaragoza’s 2-1 victory over Atletico Bilbao in midweek, the coaching crew of the Super Eagles are being urged to bring back Ike Uche into the team after his recovery from a seven month injury.

Uche last played for Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier in Abuja where he scored in the 3-0 defeat of Kenya in 2009. He has been out of competitive football since last year when his return to the pitch was short-lived.

With his performance on Wednesday, many are now calling on Samson Siasia to bring back the striker for the AFCON qualifier against Ethiopia.

However, Siasia has said that he will not rush the player back into the national side but will stick to the team that defeated Sierra Leone 2-1 in a friendly match in February.

52  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Patience Jonathan: PH stampede - Victims did not die in vain on: 22-02-2011 12:39 AM
Wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, has assured that Peoples Democratic Party supporters who died during the party’s February 11, 2011 South-South rally in Port Harcourt would not be forgotten.

She gave the assurance on Saturday when she visited families of the victims of the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt stampede in Ikwerre and Ogba/Ndoni/Egbema local government areas of Rivers State. She promised that the federal and state governments would support the bereaved families, even as she expressed regret that the deceased left at a time when they were mostly needed to translate the principle of one man one vote in the electoral process.

She pointed out that the PDP would continue to celebrate them as ‘worthy comrades’, describing the stampede as unfortunate. Condoling with the state government, the families of the deceased and the survivors, the President’s wife stated that she was touched by the death of 10 women.

She said the women believed in the change initiative, aimed at improving the lot of Nigerian women. She described the large turnout of women at the February 11 rally as a demonstration of their love for her husband and the state Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi.

She said the deceased paid the price for democracy in Nigeria.

Delivering a letter of condolence to Amaechi, she prayed for the quick recovery for the survivors and urged them not to be deterred by the incident.

Also speaking, Amaechi expressed gratitude to the President’s wife for the visit and the condolence message she brought to the bereaved families. He assured that the state government would pick the medical bills of the survivors and described the victims of the stampede as ‘strong supporters of the party’.

56  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigeria: Borno politician Gubio shot dead on: 29-01-2011 12:43 AM
A candidate for governor in the north-eastern Nigerian state of Borno has been shot dead, officials say.

Modu Fannami Gubio and at least four other people, including a 10-year-old child, were killed by men on motorbikes after Friday prayers in Maiduguri city.

Mr Gubio was the candidate for the opposition All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) in April's elections.

A BBC reporter says there are deep divisions within the ANPP over his selection to run for governor.

Similar ride-by attacks have been blamed on the Boko Haram sect, who have been targeting police and politicians.

But the BBC's Bilkisu Babangida in Maiduguri say politicians and the police believe this killing was politically motivated.

Our reporter says the attack happened as Mr Gubio left his father's home after Friday prayers.

He was talking to his supporters when two motorcyles, each with a driver and gunman, approached and shot into the crowd.

Five people, including Mr Gubio, were killed instantly and two other people are being treated in hospital, our correspondent says.

"Obviously it's a political assassination," Borno's police chief Mohammed Jinjiri Abubakar told AFP news agency.

People hid inside their homes and shops shut as police cordoned off large neighbourhoods searching for the killers of Mr Gubio, AP reports.

Nigeria's recent elections have been tarnished by fraud and violence.

Maiduguri has also experienced a string of assassinations in recent months blamed on the Boko Haram sect, which is known locally as the Taliban and wants to see Islamic law imposed across Nigeria.

The sect is opposed to Western education and accuses Nigeria's government of being corrupted by Western ideas.

Hundreds of people suspected of being Boko Haram members escaped from prison last September after gunmen attacked the jail where they were being held in the city.

Clashes in Maiduguri between Boko Haram and the police in July 2009 left hundreds of mainly sect members dead.

The violence began after the sect members attacked a police station in Maiduguri in 2009 and clashes spread to neighbouring areas.
