HUNDREDS of angry Biafran military  pensioners in the country Monday besieged the Oyo State Secretariat saying they regretted fighting against Biafran soldiers to ensure the unity of the country.

They said if they had known that the country would repay them in this wicked manner, they would have fought for the survival and sovereignty of Biafra.

The retired soldiers who spoke through their Chairman, Mr.  Mr. Gabriel Oiakhena said, “we have been pushed to the wall. The families of over 500,000 soldiers who lost their lives in Biafra are suffering.

We who are alive are just living as destitute. Many of us have died because they did not have money to treat and fend for themselves. Senator David Mark has spent about twelve years and he has done nothing for us.

When the militants were pushed to the wall, they took up arms and fought with the last pint of their blood”.

Also speaking on the issue, another ex-soldier, Mr. Olatunji Johnson said they came to draw the attention of Federal Government to their 53 per cent unpaid arrears and other allowances.

To prevent breakdown of law and order, all gates leading to the secretariat complex were shut against the angry pensioners.

Armoured Personnel Carrier, five police Hilux Vans and scores of armed policemen were stationed at the entrance of the secretariat.

Displaying the injuries they sustained in the Biafran War and many placards condemning the discouraging attitude of the government, they said it was unfortunate that they were being treated in this inhuman manner after fighting for the unity of the country.

He said their mission to the office of Governor Abiola Ajimobi was to present a letter on their plight to him for onward delivery to President Goddluck Jonathan.

He said, “we will not allow the government to rest until our money and other entitlements are paid. Many of us are still being paid N10,000 as monthly pension while they are wasting millions over there. It is not fair”.

Hundreds of students, who sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination on Monday in Kano staged a peaceful demonstration against  mass failure and withholding of their results.

The students stormed the premises of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria  in Kano on motorcycles around noon and carried placards and green leaves to show their anger.

Spokesman for the candidates, Haruna Maidabam, described the withholding of their results as a deliberate attempt to deny them the opportunity to further their studies.

According to him, more than 10, 000 students who sat for the examination in Kano metropolis have yet to access their results.

Maidabam said when the results were released last week, they went to the zonal office of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in Kano (JAMB) to complain  but were directed to go and repeat the thumb printing for verification.

‘’There is no reason for any verification of thumb- print,’’ he said.

He called on the authorities concerned to do something urgently to address their predicament.

When contacted, the JAMB Zonal Coordinator, Hajiya Karimatu Abubakar, described the incident as unfortunate and attributed it to “some technical hitches”.

Abubakar said as soon as the hitches were rectified, the issue would be resolved. (NAN)

Two Islamists accused of killing 500 people during Algeria’s civil war, including the r*pe and murder of 60 women, were on Sunday sentenced to death.

32-year-old Djilali Kouri, and 35-year-old Antar Ali, were sentenced to death for “founding and running a terrorist group that killed and spread terror among the population and that murdered hundreds of civilians and soldiers” between 1996 and 2004.

Kouri and Ali admitted to killing members of the security forces in the civil war, but denied molesting and killing civilians.

“Kouri has already been sentenced to death for some of the charges against him, but sought acquittal on the other counts,” said Brahim Behloul, the court-appointed lawyer for both accused.

“Antar Ali asked to be considered under the Civil Concord law,” said Behloul, referring to a law adopted by referendum in 1999 to encourage thousands of Islamists to surrender in exchange for a pardon.

The law offers amnesty to Islamist fighters who do not have blood on their hands.

In their confession, Ali and Kouri told investigators they were part of a group of Islamist fighters in the Chlef region during the civil war, and took part in operations in other areas.

While they admitted in court killing members of the security forces, they denied involvement in the molestation and murder of civilians.

“I admit having participated in the killing of five soldiers and five municipal guards, but I did not massacre civilians and r*pe women,” Kouri told the court.

Ali also said that he had “taken part in ambushes against the military,” but denied playing a role in the massacre of civilians.

“I did not commit massacres, I was fighting the authorities. I’m not a terrorist, I am myself a victim,” he told the court.

The civil war, which broke out after the government annulled an election won by the Islamic Salvation Front, killed around 200,000 people according to official estimates.

WARRI— A 400-level medical student of Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, in Delta State, has been arrested by the police for allegedly hacking into Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan’s phone.

The student, who failed in pharmacology and pathology course  sent a text message, purportedly from the governor, to the Vice Chancellor, Prof Eric Arubayi, requesting him to upgrade his scores.

Vanguard gathered that enraged Govenor Uduaghan asked the vice chancellor to report the matter to the police and ensure the student was arrested when the matter was brought to his knowledge, as he never sent such message.

The affected student in a statement to the police, however, denied the allegation.

Investigation by Vanguard showed that the matter was causing ripples in the university, as the university authorities, apparently responding to the request, upgraded the score of the student in pharmacology.

The poser by concerned stakeholders is: Assuming, but not conceding that the text message emanated from the governor, should the vice chancellor have altered the scores of a student that failed his  examination?”

This is, however, not the first time the governor’s phone had been hacked into by fraudsters. They had hacked into his Airtel and MTN phone numbers in the past as well as his email address.

The first text message to the vice chancellor on July 24 reads: “My able VC, Chief Tony Anenih called me in respect of one boy that just wrote pathology and pharmacology exam in 400 level Medicine. My able Prof, I want you to ensure that boy passes, you know I cannot afford to disappoint Chief Tony Anenih. Am in a meeting. These are the details. CHS/04/05/88406.”

Thinking that the text message was actually from the governor, as it came from the number with which he saved the governor’s name,  Uduaghan 1 in his phone, Prof Arubayi replied, asking for the student’s name to which the hacker replied: “His name is Imala W. Kelly. My able VC,  all I want is the boy to pass. Chief Tony Anenih has been calling.”

DELSU vice chancellor, Prof Arubayi, confirmed to Vanguard in his office, Monday, that he, in fact,  received the said text message and contacted the governor after  the scores of students who scored between 48-49 in pharmacology was upgraded to 50 based on standing regulation of the university, “but he denied ever sending me such a text message.”

He said the Academic Board of the College of Health Sciences had met and approved the scores in pathology, which the student scored 46, and there was nothing that could be done about it, other than for the affected person to go for a resit, adding: “That is what I advised the governor.”

Prof Arubayi told Vanguard that it was the Provost of the College of Sciences, Dr. John Ohaju-Obodo, that drew his attention about a week after that a text message, purportedly from the governor, appointing him chairman of a juicy government  committee was received by him, but when he contacted the governor, he told him it was a scam.

He said he wasted no time when he confirmed the truth from the governor in summoning the student and handing him over to the police for cyber crime.

“I am even surprised that the police have not charged him to court, as far as I am concerned, this is an EFCC case,” he said.

He said the student was currently facing a disciplinary panel for breach of matriculation oath, but lamented that he had not appeared before the panel.

A university source said the student had been suspended, but as at Monday, he was seen attending lectures and had refused to vacate his room despite orders to that effect from the authorities.

Prof Arubayi laughed when told by Vanguard that he was being accused of examination malpractice, saying, “Did the student give me money to change his scores or is he a girl to say that she is my girlfriend, what was done was based on the regulation of the school,”

Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof Chukwuemeka Peter Aloamaka and provost, Dr Ohaju –Obodo  told Vanguard that no unilateral decision was taken by the vice chancellor, as the appropriate organ looked into the matter before upgrading the scores of five to six students based on the institution’s regulation.

The Chairman of Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area of Adamawa, Malam Mohammed Bako, said that a female police constable was killed while three persons in detention were released by gunmen who attacked the Mayo-Belwa Police Station on Thursday night.



Bako made the disclosure on Friday while touring the scene of attack, saying that the gunmen used Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) in the attack.

“A female police constable, Rahila Azoko, was killed while a policeman was injured during the assault on the Divisional Police Station.

“Three civilians, including a security man, were also injured in the attack on banks.’’

Bako pointed out that apart from the two banks and the police station, no other place was attacked by the gunmen who succeeded in burning two police vans at the police station.

“No prison was attacked. As you can see, even the police station was not burnt. The banks were not robbed. Calm has returned to the area,’’ Bako said.

Security has been beefed up in the town.

Police anti-bomb squad was seen at the premises of one of the banks, evacuating unexploded devices left behind by the attackers.

The attack is coming some weeks after men of the State Security Service discovered RPGs and ammunitions in the bush around the area. (NAN)

A Nigerian asylum seeker, who is married to a British man, is fighting for her life in hospital after an overdose medication just days before she was due to be sent back to Nigeria.

May Brown, a 19-year-old college student, fled to Britain from her home country three years ago after witnessing her father’s murder and being subjected to segxwal abuse.

She settled in Weymouth, Dorset, where she met her husband, Michael Brown, 12 months ago and the couple married last December.

Mrs Brown, who was a games maker at last summer’s Olympics and has two university offers to study law, applied to stay in the UK. However, despite her marriage her application was rejected.

Mr. Brown, 34, said UK Border Agency officials believe their marriage to be a ‘sham’ with no ’emotional attachment,’ and that his wife was also so distressed at the prospect of returning to Nigeria she took an overdose of medication.

Her mother-in-law, Helen-Claire Brown, found her collapsed on the bathroom floor on Monday morning with a note to her husband saying she ‘couldn’t live without him.’

The teenager was rushed to the Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester, where she remains in intensive care.

Before taking the overdose, May wrote: “I am deeply sorry that I had to go this way, without even saying goodbye.

“The UK immigration has finally driven me insane. They’ve pushed me too far this time and I can’t take the pain any more.

“I don’t want a life or a future you won’t be part of. I love you so much, more than life itself and can’t endure the agony of not being with you.

“Please forgive me for ending it this way. It’s better to die with my dignity than be subjected to torture and undignified death back in Nigeria.”

ABEOKUTA — The  Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Ogun State, Wednesday, said it apprehended two suspects, Popoola Sunday,  30, and Dell Taiwan  25, at  Igbore village near Obada-Oko,  in Ewekoro Local Government Area of the state while attempting to derail trains.

Public Relations Officer of the Corps in the state, Kareem Olanrewaju, in a statement in Abeokuta said  the duo were caught while removing the railway chains used to tighten the rail to allow for a firm grip.
According  to Olanrewaju, the suspects were caught in the act. He said their act was capable of derailing trains which may result in loss  of lives. They were arrested by NSCDC men on patrol.

Olanrewaju said: “The  state  Commandant  Aboluwaye has ordered for a thorough investigation to enable the corps unravel  the reasons behind their action and  they will be charged to court after investigation.

“Rail vandalism is not common in this part so, there must be a motive behind this act. The corps will look into the case from all possible angles. Rail chains and other tools used in the act were recovered from them.”

“The corps is hereby calling on members of the public especially those whose village is located around rail line to be observant and give prompt information whenever they see any strange persons around rail-way as consequence may have direct effect on them”.

 BEIJING (Reuters) - A strong 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit a remote, mostly rural and mountainous area of southwestern China's Sichuan province on Saturday, killing at least 102 people and injuring about 2,200 close to where a big quake killed almost 70,000 people in 2008.

The earthquake occurred at 8.02 a.m. (0002 GMT) in Lushan county near Ya'an city and the epicenter had a depth of 12 km (7.5 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was felt by residents in neighboring provinces and in the provincial capital of Chengdu, causing many people to rush out of buildings, according to accounts on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo microblogging service.

State television said 102 people had been confirmed dead with more than 2,200 injured, 147 of them seriously.

President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang said all efforts must be put into rescuing victims to limit the death toll.

Li arrived in Chengdu and was on his way to the disaster zone by helicopter, state media said.

"The current most urgent issue is grasping the first 24 hours since the quake's occurrence, the golden time for saving lives," Xinhua news agency quoted Li as saying.

Xinhua said 6,000 troops were heading to the area to help with rescue efforts. State television CCTV said only emergency vehicles were being allowed into Ya'an, though Chengdu airport had reopened.

Most of the deaths were concentrated in Lushan, where water and electricity were cut off. Pictures on Chinese news sites showed toppled buildings and people in bloodied bandages being treated in tents outside the hospital, which appeared only lightly damaged.

Rescuers in Lushan had pulled 32 survivors out of rubble, Xinhua said. In villages closest to the epicenter, almost all low rise houses and buildings had collapsed, according to footage broadcast on state television.

"We are very busy right now, there are about eight or nine injured people, the doctors are handling the cases," said a doctor at a Ya'an hospital who gave her family name as Liu.

The hospital was seeing head and leg injuries, she added.

"SHAKES AND TREMORS"

A resident in Chengdu, 140 km (85 miles) from Ya'an city, told Xinhua he was on the 13th floor of a building when he felt the quake. The building shook for about 20 seconds and he saw tiles fall from nearby buildings.

Ya'an is a city of 1.5 million people and is considered one of the birthplaces of Chinese tea culture. It is also the home to one of China's main centers for protecting the giant panda.

"There are still shakes and tremors and our area is safe. The pandas are safe," said a spokesman with Ya'an's Bifengxia nature park, a tourism park that houses more than 100 pandas.

Shouts and screams were heard in the background while Reuters was on the telephone with the spokesman.

"There was just an aftershock, an aftershock, our office is safe," he said.

Numerous aftershocks jolted the area, the largest of which was magnitude 5.1.

Sichuan is one of the four major natural-gas-producing provinces in China, and its output accounts for about 14 percent of the nation's total.

Sinopec Group, Asia's largest oil refiner, said its huge Puguang gas field was unaffected.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially put the magnitude at 7, but later revised it down.

The devastating May 2008 quake was 7.9 magnitude.
