44  Forum / Politics / 52 Nigerians Deported From The United Kingdom (UK) on: 21-04-2011 12:42 PM
52 Nigerians were yesterday deported by the United Kingdom (UK) government according to a Nigerian official at the High Commission in LondonMr Mohammed Isa, the Head of the Immigration Section in the Nigerian High Commission in the UK, speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, said that the would-be deportees would arrive at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in a chartered flight.

He said that they included those who had either completed their prison terms, failed-asylum seekers or those who overstayed their authorised permit.

Mohammed further also said that those to be deported would be accompanied by British law enforcement agents and two Nigerian officials.

“This is the first time a chartered flight conveying Nigerian deportees would be accompanied by Nigerian officials,” Isa said.

He pointed out that the mission had never recorded any `ugly incidents’ on the UK route since the exercise began following the conclusion in 2005, of a Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) on migration returns between the two countries.

He added: “Though, it is also in line with the global best practices, it is our responsibility to ensure that the deportees are treated in the most humane and dignified manner.”

45  Forum / Politics / CANCELLATION OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION RESULTS? on: 19-04-2011 03:37 PM
The Congress for Political Change has sent a petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission, demanding the cancellation of the presidential election results from the South-South and South-East.

The party’s petition, which was addressed to the commission’s chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega and dated April 18, 2011, was signed by National Secretary of the CPC, Mr. Buba Galadima.

In the petition, the CPC claimed that elections in these two zones were not done in substantial compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

It alleged that the results from the zones were “substantially affected by massive irregularities.”

The party said its agents at most of the polling booths informed its leadership that members of the public were intimidated and driven away from the polling units, while ballot papers were not deposited in the ballot box in open view of the public.

The petition read, “The ballot boxes were on account of the above, thumb printed with multiple votes in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party at the election with one compromised voter thumb printing multiply for the presidential candidate of the PDP at the expense of other candidates of the opposition parties.

56  Forum / Politics / Crowd stones Bauchi State Governor on: 8-04-2011 02:40 PM
Bauchi State governor, Isa Yuguda was almost mobbed yesterday by angry indigenes of Bogoro town in Bogoro Local Government Area of the state, during a visit to the area.  At least three vehicles in his convoy were destroyed in the process.

Mr Yuguda was on an assessment tour of Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro Local Government areas, hit by sectarian crises since January in which many innocent lives were lost and properties worth millions of naira destroyed.

Accompanied by security officers during the tour, Mr Yuguda visited Bununu, Gital and some villages affected by the crisis where he addressed displaced victims before moving to Bogoro.

The governor, who had all along avoided the area during his electioneering campaign throughout the state, ran into trouble when his convoy reached Bogoro where he was billed to address people on the lingering crisis at the palace of the district head.

Mr Yuguda, whose rating has allegedly dropped due to what many see as his poor handling of the crisis in the area, got more than he could chew as a large angry crowd which gathered at the palace of the district head of Bogoro prevented him from proceeding to the affected villages.

Sources gathered that their anger with the governor was that he had failed to visit them and commiserate with them when the crisis broke out in January.

57  Forum / Politics / I left PDP to save my marriage —Dora Akunyili on: 8-04-2011 02:34 PM
Former Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, on Thursday said her husband, Dr. Chike Akunyili, forced her to quit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Akunyili, who left the PDP last December to contest the Anambra Central Senatorial seat on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, said her husband could no longer accept the violent nature of the PDP in Anambra State.

She recalled how she called a stakeholders’ meeting of the PDP in Awka in 2010 after the party lost the governorship election, saying developments at the meeting shocked her husband, who gave a choice between her marriage and the PDP.

She said some PDP members organised hoodlums, who released teargas cannisters at the meeting venue and sent everyone scampering to safety.

“There and then, my husband asked me to choose between my marriage to him and attending PDP meetings,” she said.
58  Forum / Politics / TB Joshua Vindicated Over 2011 Elections Cancellation on: 7-04-2011 01:33 PM
Prophet Temitope Balogun (TB) Joshua of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, had predicted that elections may not hold unless very serious prayers were offered.
In a story published in P.M.NEWS on 16 March 2011 and titled “Pray For The Election To Hold”, the Man in the Synagogue: as TB Joshua is known by his followers, prophesied that only ‘serious prayers will make April (elections) a reality’. The story reads in part: “With billions of naira already spent by thousands of candidates and many hours invested in campaign trains, a warning by the man who predicted the outcome of the Ghanaian election two years ago may send shivers down the spines of many”.

In the interview to be published in TheNews magazine, TB Joshua said : "About the upcoming elections, I have said many times that I don’t like talking about Nigeria again because all the messages God has given me about Nigeria, nobody has bothered to come and ask me ‘what are you saying? Explain more so that we know the next step to take.

“But, I know that we need a lot of prayers to make April a reality. I said it earlier and you can see what is happening now: bomb blasts all over the place, court cases all over the place and so on. So, like I said, we need a lot of prayers to make April a reality.”

Shortly after the story was published on www.pmnewsnigeria.com, many readers derided TB Joshua’s prediction, calling on him to stay away from politics. Naubiko, a reader wrote: “These people are the ones killing this country with their obvious statement. Every man knows that the election in Nigeria is not stable and neither is it free and fair. Instead of the so-called religious leaders rebuking these greedy politicians, they rather support them and then subdue the people with their hidden agenda just to boost their pocket instead of telling the truth.”
