1  Forum / Politics / Sanusi among world’s 100 most influential people on: 22-04-2011 07:18 AM
Barely a month after his investiture with the Global and African Central Banker of 2011 awards by The Banker Magazine, the influential Time Magazine yesterday followed suit, listing the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, among ‘The 2011 TIME 100.’ Time Magazine said on its website yesterday that The Time 100 list, now in its eighth year, sets out to recognise the innovation, activism and achievement of the world’s most influential individuals. “The TIME 100 is not a list of the most powerful people in the world; it’s not a list of the smartest people in the world, it is a list of the most influential people in the world. They’re scientists, thinkers, philosophers, leaders, icons, artists and visionaries; people who are using their ideas, their visions and their actions to transform the world and have an effect on a multitude of people”, explained the TIME Managing Editor, Richard Stengel.

The New York-based magazine, in the May 2 edition, published Mr Sanusi’s name in the 11th position, along with great political leaders as the United States President, Barak Obama, and wife, Michelle; United States Vice President, Joe Biden current first female Chancellor of Germany and Christian Democratic Union leader, Angela Merkel; French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, and British Prime Minister, David Cameron as well as wife of the former U.S President and American secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.

Others listed in by the publication include: Nobel laureate and professor of economics at the Columbia University, Joseph Stiglitz; WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, and Wael Ghonim, the young Google marketing executive who became one of the heroes of recent anti-Mubarak street movement that led to the ouster of the Egyptian leader as well as one of the world’s richest Internet entrepreneurs, Reed Hastings.

Achievement well deserved

Mr Sanusi is one of the only two Africans to have made the current list. The other is a Senegalese and President of a non-governmental organisation, Femmes Africa Solidarité (FAS), that champions the cause of women in Africa.

In his reaction to the development, Managing Director, Global Markets, Ifeanyi Bede said: “The recognition is well deserved as he has distinguished himself as the astute, conscientious and courageous leader of the Central Bank of Africa’s most populous nation, at a time when the sector required tough and decisive intervention. His vision and actions earned him the reputation as one of the most respected and authoritative voices on financial and economic matters on the continent, including a special invitation in November 2010 by the US Congressional Sub-Committee on International Monetary Policy and Trade, to give testimony at a congressional hearing titled The Global Financial Crisis and Financial Reforms in Nigeria,”.

I dont know why our so called president always have misplaced priorities, So like a year ago (or more), the president of the supposedly most populous black nation on earth joined facebook in an "I Belong" move to be like Obama, outcome? Over a year now and all he has is a meagre 500K fans, imagine president of a county where population is well over 250 Million.

6 hours ago petit size football, the almighty Lionel Messi, joined same facebook and in 6 hours he already has 7 Million fans.

Goodluck Jonathan has already been seen spending how money on "celebrities" to campaign for him, the last thing we want is to spend the time we pay him for poking people and looking for mistresses online, HABA MR. PRESIDO!!!

Just focus on governing an leave all these distractions, if you have anything to tell Nigerians go to punch, vanguard or any newspaper and tell us, stop mesmerizing around else I will report you to aunty Patience
Did he poke u or ur sister??? foolllllllllllllllllllllllll

i really do not understand why pple should support this man, he has had the oppourtunity to rule for 9 mounth now, and he has not initiated the transformation he has been shouting about, instead he condemed the performing governors by calling them rascals.
If he is really our God sent president, 9 mounth is enough for him to prove it. Or what do you think.
I dnt think in dat direction mr.... Dont u knw dat nigeria has reached a level where even 5years cant be enough for just 1 president to transform all sectors..... Transforming a country cant be just jonathan's period, but a thing of continuation i.e frm one administration to d next.. With dat, there will be a president that will finish it all..... Thats wat i think......

10  Forum / Politics / Hosni Mubarak resigns as president on: 11-02-2011 06:48 PM
Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president, has resigned from his post, handing over power to the armed forces.

Omar Suleiman, the vice-president, announced in a televised address that the president was "waiving" his office, and had handed over authority to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

Suleiman's short statement was received with a roar of approval and by celebratory chanting and flag-waving from a crowd of hundreds of thousands in Cairo's Tahrir Square, as well by pro-democracy campaigners who attended protests across the country on Friday.

The crowd in Tahrir chanted "We have brought down the regime", while many were seen crying, cheering and embracing one another.

Mohamed ElBaradei, an opposition leader, hailed the moment as being "a dream come true" while speaking to Al Jazeera.

"I can't tell you how every Egyptian feels today," he said. "We have been able to restore our humanity ... to be free and independent".

He reiterated that Egypt now needs to return to stability, and proposed that a transition government be put in place for the next year. The government, he said, would include figures from the army, from the opposition and from other circles.

"We need to go on ... our priority is to make sure the country is restored as a socially cohesive, economically vibrant and ... democratic country," he said.

"Tonight, after all of these weeks of frustration, of violence, of intimidation ... today the people of Egypt undoubtedly [feel they] have been heard, not only by the president, but by people all around the world," our correspondent at Tahrir Square reported, following the announcement.

"The sense of euphoria is simply indescribable," our correspondent at Mubarak's Heliopolis presidential palace, where at least ten thousand pro-democracy activists had gathered, said.

"I have waited, I have worked all my adult life to see the power of the people come to the fore and show itself. I am speechless." Dina Magdi, a pro-democracy campaigner in Tahrir Square told Al Jazeera.

"The moment is not only about Mubarak stepping down, it is also about people's power to bring about the change that no-one ... thought possible."

In Alexandria, Egypt's second city, our correspondent described an "explosion of emotion". He said that hundreds of thousands were celebrating in the streets.

Responding to the announcement, Catherine Ashton, the European Union's foreign policy chief, told Al Jazeera that the 27-nation bloc "respect[ed] the decision that President Mubarak has taken".

She said the EU wanted to "pay tribute to the dignity of" Egyptians' behaviour at this time, and that Europe was ready to offer its assistance in this transition period in the fields of elections, building civil society and other areas.
11  Forum / The Buzz Central / Kelly Hansome fights in Abuja nite club on: 11-02-2011 01:01 PM
Hansome
Kennis Music artiste, Kelly Hansome, has made another avoidable detour into the minefields of controversy. The controversy-prone singer is the subject of a petition sent to the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Haruna John, a copy of which E-Punch also got.

According to the petition signed by the proprietor of the club, Edwin Okeke, the Maga Don Pay crooner, visited Cue Lounge located at Savannah Suites, Area 3, Garki, Abuja, on the night of Friday, January 28 with a few friends ostensibly to unwind.

Okeke states, “The problem started when the musician who came uninvited appealed through a mutual friend to be allowed to render a track from one of his albums. Little did we know that we were making a big mistake by acceding to his request because as soon as he finished the first track, he delved into another and started using his music to incite violence.”

At which point Okeke said they started pleading with him to stop but he seemed past caring: “His disregard for our plea even amid shouts of disapproval from the guests who were already walking out, prompted Deejay Scott of Brilla FM to turn off the microphone.

Realising that he could no longer continue with the microphone, he started assaulting an official of Cue Lounge until the lounge guards came to the official’s rescue.”

While being dragged out of the club, Okeke stated that Kelly ran back and grabbed the official by the collar while his (Kelly’s) escorts threw punches randomly. He declared further that in Kelly’s final attempt to forcefully gain entrance into the lounge, the front door which had been locked to forestall further disturbances did not give but the glass name plate broke in the process.

“A smashed 12mm glass name plate outside the door is one of the clear indications that violent acts were let loose by the musician and his escorts. In fact, a visit to our premises will show evidence of the magnitude of disruption and great violence that occurred on the said night,” Okeke said. Aside this act which led to many patrons leaving in anger, what irked the management of the club was the artiste’s threat to come back and continue where he stopped.

Several attempts to reach Kelly were unsuccessful as his mobile line was switched off. His label boss, Kenny Ogungbe, could not be reached for comments as he is in Los Angeles, United States

Investigations into the sudden death of University of Lagos Marine Sciences undergraduate, Ella Ukhueleigbe, was brought to an unexpected end on Wednesday after the police agreed with an autopsy that the 17-year-old girl died from fumes emitted by a generator, which she inhaled.

The autopsy sighted by our correspondent and signed by a pathologist from Lagos University Teaching Hospital, concluded that Ella, who was brought in dead to the hospital, died from ‘Pulmonary thromboembolism.’

Medic8.com says, “A pulmonary embolism or thromboembolism is a sudden blockage in a lung artery, usually due to a blood clot that travelled to the lung from the leg. A clot that forms in one part of the body and travels in the bloodstream to another part of the body is called an embolus.

“Pulmonary embolism is a serious condition that can cause: permanent damage to part of the lung from lack of blood flow to lung tissue; low oxygen levels in the blood; damage to other organs in the body from not getting enough oxygen. If a clot is large, or if there are many clots, pulmonary embolism can cause death.”

PUNCH METRO gathered that police investigation suggested that Ella and Tokunbo, who was questioned by the police after her death, went to Tokunbo aunt’s house and put on the generator.

According to a source at Olosan Police Division, Mushin, where the case was reported, the police worked on the theory that the fumes being emitted by the generator gradually seeped into the room where both of them were discussing from the window.

“We found out that they were very close when they were younger. They were together in the room and discussing the past and did not notice that they were inhaling the fumes. Both of them became unconscious and by the time help reached them, Ella’s case had become critical. She died on the way to the hospital,” the source said.

PUNCH METRO gathered that the autopsy, which had been shown to Ella‘s family, had quenched their thirst for redress. It was learnt that the family are currently disposed to withdrawing the case from the police.

Spokesman of Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Frank Mba, who confirmed that the autopsy report, said that the death was caused by pulmonary thromboembolism. He said, “We are at present discussing with the family of the late girl on the next line of action.”

Ella was in her second year at UNILAG before she died last Tuesday; few hours after she went out with Tokunbo.

UNILAG’s Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Olukayode Amund, had told PUNCH METRO that Ella lived in the institution’s Moremi Hall until her death.
