Q: What is Boko Haram about?
A: Our aim is to spread Islam all over Nigeria, that is our mission and I want people to understand that our correct name is Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad. Those calling our group Boko Haram do so to discredit the group and it ideas. It was formed at three fundamental levels.
The first level from which our group emerged was from people in this country who, for selfish reasons, recruited young people and sometimes children and sent them overseas for education. In reality, these people are totally ignorant of the reasons why these big men take them abroad. In the name of education, these young men are taken to mostly Arab countries and turned into militants who respect only those who sponsored them abroad. Those big men who sponsor these youths don’t have any conscience and no love for this country.
It all started in 2004 when the Government of Mauritania fell.
It is similar to what is happening in Libya now, though slightly different. When the government in Mauritania fell in 2004, some individuals from that country came into Nigeria to recruit some youths as mercenaries to join forces with them to overthrow the government in power.
The second level of our membership is made up of young men who were recruited by our late leader, Mohammed Yusuf. Yusuf was approached by some people from Mauritania to recruit more Nigerians to continue with the struggle in Mauritania. The grounds were that this young people were being recruited to further their Islamic studies. They were to serve as a support group to the Mauritanian army. But our leader Mohammed Yusuf rejected the plan. But a number of Nigerian big men who were involved in the Mauritania struggle were angry with Yusuf. This led to a disagreement which pitched the young men loyal to Yusuf against those backing the big men. Yusuf, however, insisted on genuine Islam whereas those opposing him were mercenaries who were willing to serve their master’s interest in Mauritania.
Q: At what point did they leave perfect Islam and become violent?
Whatever I am telling you now I have already made available to the SSS when they arrested me. There was a misunderstanding within the group and this disagreement was between those who received military training in Mauritania and those who were loyal to Yusuf. The SSS infiltrated our ranks and began to arrest many of those who were militants. However, as they were arrested some big men moved in to ensure that the court released them and they came back caused more problems within our group.
In 2009 the disagreement developed into a crisis in areas where our group was spreading Islamic ideals. I was in charge of our operations in Bauchi, Gombe and Plateau. The crisis was more in Bauchi State in two locations and in Kano in one location. In Bauchi, a group began to lay claim to a mosque that was built by our group. This caused a major crisis again and a young girl was kidnapped in Bauchi and taken to Borno State. Our group was fingered but we told one intelligence officer, Bala, who was investigating the case that her relations took her to Borno and if the issue was not handled well it could cause a crisis. The SSS directed us to contact the Commissioner of Police in Borno State to secure the girl’s release. We were still in the process when the Bauchi State governor directed that members of our group should be driven away from the state. That was how our people started to resist the forced evacuation and the crisis with the government spread to Borno State. In fact, the crisis began in Bauchi and not Borno.
Q: Anytime there is a bombing in Nigeria Boko Haram claims responsibility, for example, four times in Borno, Police headquarters and UN office in Abuja.
Yes, we bombed some of those places you mentioned. Remember that I told you that some of our members were recalled from military training in Mauritania. Among them were three specialist in bomb making.
When this crisis began I made a move to the authorities advising that the arrest of Boko Haram members would not bring an end to the crisis. I suggested that the government should stop the arrest and release those already arrested. Let me repeat it today, government should rebuild houses, mosques and schools demolished in Bauchi and Borno states. Government should not interfere in the genuine worship of our group and ensure justice for all. If these are not in place, I predict that the Nigerian situation may become like what is happening in Somalia.
I give this warning because many of those young men who went to Mauritania are being attracted back home because of the violent situation brought by the present crisis.
When I gave my advice, the police chased and arrested me, and kept me in detention. Before I was detained, I gave the police the video recordings of how some of how our members were being given military training, but the IGP ordered that I should be detained. I was left in detention for 10 months.
But those things that I warned about are playing out today. While I was in detention, I was in contact with our people and I still gave forewarnings to the authorities about attacks. I even told them beforehand whenever an operation was to take place. The bombing of the police headquarters had been planned and on many occasions and I had always told them in advance.
In fact, Bala had helped the police because each time I got in touch with him he worked to avert the attacks. If not, the police headquarters would have been bombed before now. Three days before the attack I warned the police that there would be an attack in Abuja that would embarrass the security authorities. Also, after the bombing of the police headquarters, I was summoned before the IGP and given a GSM phone. I called the person who planned and led the attack and we spoke right in front of the IGP. So, all these terror attacks are caused by the negligence of government.
Since I was released from detention, I have rejoined my group and some of us have warned our members to stick to the original ideals of our leader, Yusuf. He did not tell us to kill innocent people or to break into and steal from banks. If there is a conflict between the faithful and the authorities our opposition should be against the authorities and not the talakawas.
Q: There are allegations that Boko Haram is being sponsored by some top level politicians, is it true?
The truth is that politicians are the root cause of this Boko Haram problem. For instance, in Borno State, the governor sponsors a group of armed youths known as ECOMOG. It is this ECOMOG that the governor formed and looks after, above the police, SSS and other security agencies. In Gombe State, the governor has the Kalari. I was once contacted by a governorship candidate to kill an opponent for a fee. The security agencies know what I am telling you.
In Bauchi there is the Tarafuka, an armed group sponsored by the government, and the government watches on, even when we have the SSS and police. That is why our new leader, Mallam Abubakar Shekau, is calling on the youths to disregard all government in the country – a call that has that has brought him and the group into conflict with the government. Some politicians are now taking the advantage of the conflict between the Boko Haram leadership and the authorities to execute their own agenda.
Q: Did Boko Haram bomb the United Nations Office in Abuja?
I would not answer the question of whether Boko Haram bombed the UN building or not for some reasons.
Q: Did Boko Haram bomb the Police headquarters in Abuja?
Yes, we bombed the police headquarters in Abuja. I told you earlier that when the bombing of the Police headquarters happened I called the person who led the attack, I was in front of the IGP. Yes, we bombed the police headquarters in Abuja. They asked me why we bombed the police headquarters and I told him (IGP) in his presence that it was because of his statement in Maiduguri that the days of Boko Haram were numbered.
Q: Why does Boko Haram bomb army barracks and attack police and security operatives? What do they do to affect Islam or the work of Boko Haram?
It is because of the indiscriminate killing of our members and innocent people by the police without trial. They arrest innocent people harass and shoot them and the authorities do nothing about it. Why should we then leave the police?
Q: Boko Haram is asking for Sharia in all the Northern states, and the states have Sharia, so what is the problem again?
I have been waiting for this question. I was in detention when it was said that Boko Haram had threatened to turn the entire North, or the country, into a Sharia state. Since I came out of detention have you heard that Boko Haram is threatening to turn the whole of Nigeria into an Islamic nation? The truth is that those spreading such information are just lying against us. What we are demanding is that those states that have independently declared their states Sharia states should implement it to the letter. Have you seen Sharia cut the hand of someone who steals a cow head, while someone who corruptly enriches himself is left to go free? They have chased away local prostitutes and brought in international red light prostitutes to replace them. They have also banned local alcoholic drinks, yet they drink imported spirits in their respective government houses. Is that Sharia? They are insincere, so they must be effective in the implementation of Sharia. Sharia is being abused. I pity this country. Mauritania that does not have any wealth exported Boko Haram into Nigeria. Now, Libya that has money and wealth has collapsed. Who says that this countries would not bring something worse than Boko Haram into Nigeria?

| It was a harvest of deaths as about 81 people, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police was among 59 other members of the Boko Haram sect were reportedly killed in Yobe State Thursday when soldiers and other security men confronted the sect members in their stronghold, leading to a bloody encounter.
Others said to have been killed included a Commander of the Police Mobile Force along with four of his men and two civilians.
The Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika told newsmen in Abuja yesterday that the Joint Task Force set up to quell the Boko Haram menace rocking some Northern parts of the country, in the early hours of yesterday, launched a successful operation on the sect’s operational stronghold in Damaturu, Yobe state, killing 59 of them and destroying their armoury.
Reports from Damaturu, Yobe State said explosions rocked Maiduguri and Potiskum leading to the death of seven persons, including two soldiers, four policemen and two civilians.
An official said that after the gunfire and explosions rocked the region, the violence was soon blamed on Boko Haram Islamists. About 16 people reportedly died in the Maiduguri explosion. Eye witnesses said Dala, Alamderi and Timbershed were mostly hit.
Meanwhile, more gunfire was heard in Damaturu on Friday morning, but details were unclear.
The Yobe State Police Commissioner,Lawan Tanko, said, “From reports I have received from Potiskum, five people were killed in last night’s attack — four policemen and a civilian,” even as Ibrahim Farinloye, northeast coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency, confirmed that, “three police vans were also burnt in the attack.”
A hospital source in Damaturu said late Thursday that a soldier was killed and seven police officers wounded there. He said a 10-year-old boy was being operated on after being hit by bullets.
The police said the attackers had been repelled and pushed toward Potiskum, just as a military spokesman in Maiduguri said multiple blasts hit the city on Thursday, but could not give further details. An army source said six explosions were heard.
Maiduguri and Damaturu are among the cities which have borne the brunt of the violence attributed to Boko Haram, that has claimed responsibility for scores of attacks in the north. Residents were said to be fleeing the area in droves due to the alleged heightened security challenges and subsequent bomb explosion that had engulfed the city.
The police said members of Boko Haram sect who were preparing the explosive at about 12 noon on Monday escaped arrest even as three AK 47 riffles, ammunitions and various weapons and explosives making material were recovered from the scene of the explosion.
Speaking during his first official visit to the Guards Brigade headquarters in Abuja, Ihejirika said, “There was a major encounter with the Boko Haram in Damaturu yesterday.
In the encounter, we over ran their major stronghold and their ammunition site. ’’In the encounter, we lost three of our soldiers; seven were wounded but we killed over 50 of their members. They came with sophisticated and heavy weaponry including GPMG’s, SMG’s and bombs but our soldiers subdued them.
“We had information that the Boko Haram sect planned to cause mayhem this festive period; we have put in place measures to nip this plan in the bud by deploying our Quick Response Troops, QRT, to man specific points as well as carry out patrols in search of them.”

| The United States embassy in Nigeria has warned U.S citizens in Abuja of a plot by the Islamist Militant group otherwise known as Boko Haram to attack hotels and other locations Abuja during the Sallah holiday.
The embassy said potential targets may include Nicon Luxury, Sheraton Hotel and the Transcorp Hilton Hotel.
Full text of the message on the embassy’s website http://nigeria.usembassy.gov reads:
“The U.S. Mission in Nigeria issues the following emergency message for the attention of all U.S. citizens in Abuja, Nigeria.
“Following the recent Boko Haram, aka Nigerian Taliban, attacks in Borno and Yobe States, the U.S. Embassy has received information that Boko Haram may plan to attack several locations and hotels in Abuja, Nigeria, during the Sallah holiday. Potential targets may include the Nicon Luxury, the Sheraton Hotel, and the Transcorp Hilton Hotel.
“All U.S. Government personnel have been instructed to avoid these locations, and previously scheduled events have been cancelled. American citizens should expect additional police and military checkpoints, additional security, and possible road blocks in Abuja for the foreseeable future.
“The U.S. government has no additional information regarding the timing of the possible attacks.
“The Embassy reminds U.S. citizens to exercise additional caution. Please maintain a high state of vigilance and personal awareness, particularly in and around Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, near Nigerian government facilities, diplomatic missions, large gathering places, hotels, markets and malls, and places of worship.

| | A man, identified as Muhammed Abdullahi has been arrested in connection with recent Jos crises by soldiers attached to the military Special Task Force (STF) in Jos. Abdullahi was apprehended last night in Rop Village in Barkin Ladi Local Government.
Parading the suspect at the headquarters of the Force, STF spokesman, Captain Charles Ekeocha, said that Abdulahi was one of more than 30 attackers who besieged Rop village yesterday night.
“The youths of the area alerted us of the impending attack and we moved in. When the attackers learnt of our presence, they aborted their plan. Unfortunately for this man, we met him on the road and we suspected him to be one of them,” Ekeocha said, “We conducted immediate search on him and found in his travelling bag some weapons of attack. The weapons in his travelling bag include a pistol, knife and handset.”
The Captain reiterated the preparedness of the team to work with the youths, and implored them to cooperate with the Force by supplying intelligence information.
“We are not spirits; we are also humans; we cannot succeed without people’s cooperation. We were able to arrest this man because the youths worked with us.”
He pointed out that the STF could only succeed in a place where it enjoys wide acceptance.
According to him, “Where the youths say they don’t want us, we vacate the area. Any day they are ready to accept us and they ask us to come back, we will go. There is no benefit in soldiers killing those we are brought to protect. People should stop this rumor that we aid some of the attacks; this will not help us or the peace process.” | | | | |

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday arrested and detained a Catholic priest, Rev.Fr Remigius Onyelu for allegedly defrauding an Abuja businesswoman, Mrs. Ijeoma Ugwah of about $44,000.
The Catholic priest was said to have been arrested at the Pope John II Guest House in Wuse 2, Abuja at about 10am.
The priest, who was interrogated for hours yesterday, is being detained at the EFCC headquarters pending the conclusion of investigation.
A source said: “The priest was alleged to have conspired with her younger sister, Princess Ebere David to obtain the money from the victim under the guise of helping her to process university education for her daughter in Canada where Rev Fr. Onyelu claims he has been on pastoral assignment for 15 years.
“Two years after making the payments, the victim was shocked to discover that she has fallen into a wrong hand who hides under his pastoral duties to defraud unsuspecting parents seeking admission for their children in Canada.
“She subsequently sent a petition to the EFCC Chairman, Mrs. Farida Waziri, who promptly assigned a team of operatives to put the priest on watch-list and arrest him any time he returns to Nigeria .
“While the Rev Fr. is being detained for interrogation, operatives were said to have declared a manhunt for his accomplice who has gone into hiding.
The EFCC spokesman, Femi Babafemi confirmed the arrest of the priest and declined further comments.
“The case is still under investigation, I cannot give you the details,” he added. | | | | |

| | In keeping with his avowed resolve to ensure the full security of lives and property across the country, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Monday in Abuja directed the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshall Oluseyi Petinrin to take full charge of the security situation in Plateau State immediately and take all necessary actions to stop the recent spate of killings in the state.
Following a meeting of the National Security Council, President Jonathan also directed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Pius Anyim Pius to bring up all pending reports by recent committees set up by the Federal Government on the Plateau for immediate review and implementation.
President Jonathan who is scheduled to meet with the Plateau State Governor, Chief Jonah Jang tomorrow, further directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to take prompt action to address the plight of internally displaced persons in Plateau State.
He renewed his call on parties involved in the crises in Plateau State to embrace tolerance, dialogue and compromise to ensure the success of ongoing efforts to achieve a lasting resolution of their differences. | | | | |

After abt a half a decade of getting married, i can't help but notice some changes. For instance, i used to be terrified of cockroaches. I literally run and used to beg my husband in our first yr of marriage to kill them, now, well, i'm an expert at exterminating them n do it wit such expertise dt i fear d 'Queen' of cockroaches might pay me a visit. I also cld never eat garri wit my hand, always thinking it not cool n using a fork, now, a bowl of garri can never be enjoyed unless i use my hands. So guys and ladies that are married, what changes ve u noticed? Will post more as i recall them After abt a half a decade of getting married, i can't help but notice some changes. MAIDUGURI, Nigeria Aug 19 (Reuters) - Nigerian police said on Friday they had arrested a shop owner who sold chemicals to people suspected of involvement in Monday's failed car bomb attack on the police headquarters in the northeastern city of Maiduguri.
A man was shot dead by police after he rammed a car filled with explosives, which failed to detonate, through the gates leading to the police station, similar to a strike in the capital Abuja in June, carried out by radical Islamist sect, Boko Haram.
"Detectives combed the car for clues on Monday that would assist in further investigations. Following up on one of the clues, detectives were able to trace the source of the explosive materials to a store in Maiduguri," Simeon Midenda, Borno state police commissioner, told reporters on Friday.
"Investigations so far revealed 13 bottles of aluminium powder, one packet of face masks and a packet of hand gloves were bought from the store on Aug. 8, by those who sponsored the bombing attempt."
Midenda gave no details of who the police believed the sponsors or bombers were. He said documents in the shop show significant purchases were made on dates prior to other bomb attacks over the last year.
Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, has been the scene of months of attacks by Boko Haram, whose name roughly translated from the local Hausa language is "Western education is sinful". More than 150 people have been killed in attacks this year in the city of around 1.2 million.
Attacks are growing in intensity and spreading further afield. The group claimed responsibility for the attack in the car park of police headquarters in Abuja.
The police commissioner of Yobe, another state in the remote northeast on the Niger border, said one of his patrols arrested eight members of Boko Haram behind a bomb attack last week and had transferred them to police headquarters in Abuja.
Bomb blasts in the north have replaced militant attacks on oil facilities hundreds of miles away in the southern Niger Delta as the main security threat in Nigeria.
Boko Haram's views, which include wanting sharia law more widely applied across Nigeria, are not backed by most of the country's Muslim population, the largest in sub-Saharan Africa.
President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed a committee to look into the unrest in the northeast. The team was supposed to deliver its report on Tuesday but was given a two-week extension after presenting preliminary findings. when GEJ is talking about building more universities he fails to realise that the more universities he builds, the more unemployed graduates we would have. Times are hard, teenagers that are going through hard times cannot get reasonable jobs; like working as a cashier at a fast food joint (not the mama put kind but the Mr Biggs kind), instead they have to settle for hawking, bus conductors etc. and even when they cannot afford to go to the universities,they could go to trade schools but they still have to spend money for it. But in a lot of western countries they teach high school students trades and as soon as they graduate, they get certification for the trade. i live in the U.S and the high school that i attended was a vocational school where students were taught; carpentry, pottery, fashion design, cosmetology, medical assistant, auto mechanics, auto body works etc. i ended up studying nursing for three years between classes during the day and as soon as i graduated i was able to get a job as medical assistant ( meaning that i check the patients blood pressure, help the doctors with paper work etc.) which is my main source of income now that i am in the university, i even have a friend who studied cosmetology, she doesn't have a job but she gets a lot of money doing peoples hair and makeup which is helping her keep body and soul together. I think that we need schools that teach secondary school students trades in Nigeria, do you all agree with me??

IN a manner reminiscent of the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (Zik), Ikemba Nnewi, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, has made it clear that he is not in a hurry to leave this earth.
Zik, a foremost nationalist and Nigeria's first President, had declared in an interview with journalists in his later years, that he was not in a hurry to leave this earth.
Asked how he was looking forward to death, the Great Zik, as he was fondly called by his admirers, replied that this earth was all he knew and that he would like to enjoy it much longer. He eventually died at the ripe age of 91.
In a somewhat similar manner, Ojukwu, whose rumoured death shook the nation midweek, has told close friends and relatives that death is not on his mind for now as he still has an unfinished business. . . .
