By Emma Ujah, Abuja Bureau Chife

ABUJA—Niger Delta Nations Leaders, NDNL, has cried out over an alleged plot to assassinate President Goodluck Jonathan by unscrupulous politicians working in collaboration with serving and retired military officers with the aim of disintegrating the nation.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja yesterday, the group said: “The promoters of this plot seek to achieve their aims by assassinating the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and also eliminate very senior military and security officers from the South and Middle Belt of Nigeria, particularly Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Ihejirika, Senate President, David Mark and the National Security Adviser Gen. Owoye Azazi (rtd).

“Those identified in this sinister plot include retired senior military and security officers, who are working quietly with some serving officers and some ‘powerful’ opportunistic businessmen.”

206  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / BREAKING: PHCN, Nigeria’s Power Company To Stop Existing By December End on: 9-01-2012 11:16 AM
Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Power, Professor Bart Nnaji today announced in a tweet-meet on Monday that the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) will cease to exist on December 31, 2011.

The Minister said that the corporate Headquaters of PHCN will be shut down, while maintaining that “no PHCN staff will be sacked.”

Responding to the question on which companies will distribute power after PHCN no longer exists, Professor Nnaji disclosed that successor companies on distribution, generation and transmission will function.

“The existing successor companies till they are handed over to prospective investors…the PHCN employees will be absorbed by successor companies,” he added.

The Minister further said that his Ministry has also empowered the Nigerian Electricity Management Liability Company to manage the assets and liabilities of PHCN.

The Ministry of Power has also re-established the Nigerian Electric Regulatory Commission (NERC), as a strong regulator to regulate the power industry.

According to the Minister, “we hope that within the next 1-3 years we can efficiently predict power availability across the nation”.

“I want to assure Nigerians that we are doing everything necessary to boost power generation nationwide,” he said in his final tweet to close the tweet-meet on Monday.

Nigeria’s power generation was pegged at 2800MW as at 2010, but has improved to over 4000MW as at November 2011.

Seriously...I dont understand this plan.

207  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Be ready to pay 50% more for drugs – Pharmacists on: 9-01-2012 11:07 AM
By Sola Ogundipe & Chioma Obinna

LAGOS -  Twenty-four hours to the commencement of the planned nationwide strike to protest the recent removal of fuel subsidy by President Goodluck Jonathan, pharmacists under the auspices of  Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN, have told Nigerians to expect a 50 per cent rise in the cost of basic drugs in the country.

National President of the PSN, Mr Azubuike Okwor, who stated this, weekend, in Lagos also regretted that the hike in costs of basic drugs in the weeks ahead was inevitable if the decision to remove the subsidy was not reversed.

Okwor added that the development would provide another window of opportunity for faking of genuine medicines as many Nigerians would go for cheaper and affordable drugs.

His words: “After  thorough evaluation of the possible impact of the subsidy removal on the pharmaceutical sector, we predict at least a 50 per cent hike in the cost of basic drugs in Nigeria in the weeks ahead if the subsidy removal is not reversed.”

Okwor traced the cost to increases in running costs for machinery and equipment, vehicles and overall logistic plan related to professional handling of drugs by manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailer.

Further regretting that the timing of the subsidy withdrawal has also left a sizeable number of Nigerians stranded as they are unable to pay the new fares after a long holiday said: “We also see more agitations for wage increases by various cadres of personnel in the sector who would be genuinely seeking to cushion the distress that this policy will foist on them.”

Confirming that PSN will be joining other Nigerians to protest the recent withdrawal of fuel subsidy, the PSN President noted: “As part of the multiplier effect of this unpopular government decision, the citizenry has been subjected to unprecedented hardship in all sectors including transportation where the increases on local and intercity travels have increased to between 100 per cent to 200 per cent.”
