The Flying Eagles of Nigeria defeated Croatia by five goals to two at the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in a seven goal thriller on Thursday.

Uche Nwofor claimed two goals, but winger Ahmed Musa shined brightest in a field of shining Flying Eagles lights.

Nigeria needed a convincing win to dislodge Saudi Arabia, who shot to the top of the group with a 6-0 thumping of Guatemala earlier on, and they made a cracking start.

Contrary to the Nigeria squad who were very unlucky with goals in their in pre-tournament friendlies, the Flying Eagles have netted ten in two matches.

The victory will serve as a booster for the squads when they lock horns with Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

French and Uganda scientist just discovered a 20 Million year old ape skull of a tree-climbing ape in Karamoja region.

The scientists discovered the remains on July 18 while looking for fossils in the remnants of an extinct volcano in Karamoja, a semi-arid region in Uganda’s northeastern corner.

“This is the first time that the complete skull of an ape of this age has been found. It is a highly important fossil,” Martin Pickford, a paleontologist from the College de France in Paris, told a news conference.

Pickford said preliminary studies of the fossil showed that the tree-climbing herbivore, roughly 10-years-old when it died, had a head the size of a chimpanzee’s but a brain the size of a baboon’s, a bigger ape.

Several months after the commencement of the auction process for Nigeria’s Second Level Domain (SLD), only 10 companies have so far registered.

The process, which was commenced by the country’s official domain name registrar, Nigeria Internet Registration Association’s (NiRA), has only two indigenous firms, with the others being international institutions with presence in Nigeria. Registering under the SLD requires that such companies will adopt .ng as a suffix to internet address.

9  Forum / The Buzz Central / Mercy Johnson Engaged on: 21-05-2011 03:14 PM
Nollywood and the entire showbiz industry are about to witness the most memorable wedding in history as stunning actress Mercy Johnson joins the exclusive list of celebrities to walk down the aisle with her longtime boy friends. She is set to marry city millionaire, Prince Odianose Okojie.

The proposed wedding is a four-day event that will run from August 25 – 28, 2011. While the court wedding is slated for August 25, engagement holds on 26 while the white wedding and reception proper comes up on 27 as well as Thanksgiving Service/Bride’s party which holds on August 28.

In a telephone chat with Mercy, ahead of the D-day, the actress confirmed her wedding date, stating that she is happy to wed her man.

The actress also hinted that she and her husband are yet to agree on the country they want to observe their honeymoon. According to her, while she prefers to observe her honeymoon in Seychelles, her man wants them to travel to Malta.

Asked whether she will quit acting after her wedding, the sultry actress answered in the affirmative, declaring that “I’m going to quit acting.” She disclosed however that she is planning to go into television and also, to turn a movie producer.

For those who are curious about the identity of the groom , he is a Prince of Esanland (Uromi), in Edo State, a simple and amiable city millionaire.

Addressing previous rumours, she says, “I did mention that I was getting engaged and I did mention that I was getting married and I said that I wanted the wedding within my birthday period, but I didn’t specify on the date. I got engaged in November 2010. So, I couldn’t have mentioned that I was getting married in August 2010.

So I really never came out on any interview to say I was getting married. It was just a speculation because most of my friends knew I always wanted to have a wedding on my birthday (August 28th).” Mercy’s confirming her wedding date however ends many speculations and guesses.

10  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Avram Grant Sacked-West Ham Relegated on: 15-05-2011 11:23 PM
Grant was given his marching orders within a couple of hours of an astonishing match at the DW Stadium that saw Wigan score three times in the second half to keep alive their own hopes of survival.

Demba Ba scored two headers in the first period to give Grant's team a 2-0 lead at half-time, but their day began to unravel when Charles N'Zogbia hammered home a superb free-kick early in the second period.

Substitute Conor Sammon scored his first goal for Wigan to level matters on 68 minutes before N'Zogbia added his second of the day deep into stoppage time as his shot somehow squirmed under visiting keeper Robert Green, who had made some splendid saves in a match that raged from end to end throughout a frantic afternoon.

While West Ham will face life in the Championship next term, Wigan have given themselves a real chance of avoiding the drop.

Wigan are level with Blackpool and Birmingham on 39 points while Blackburn and Wolves are a point further ahead on 40 points as the season heads for a nerve-shredding final day.

Wigan know that they have every chance of staying in the Premier League if they win at Stoke next Sunday. For West Ham, there are only regrets.

They had plenty of chances to win the match, but were penalised for making too many errors in defence in a match that typified the shoddy and inconsistent nature of their campaign.

With skipper Scott Parker left on the bench due to injury, West Ham looked to be up against it knowing that they needed a win to stay alive in the top flight.

West Ham required Fulham to win at Birmingham to avoid the drop. Their London rivals did their bit with a 2-0 win at St Andrews, and it looked good for West Ham as they built up a 2-0 lead at the break.

A delightful cross from Thomas Hitzlsperger saw Ba rise to nod home on 12 minutes after Mohamed Diame had lifted a shot over the bar for Wigan moments earlier.

They added a second goal on 26 minutes courtesy of another fine finish from Ba with his head after James Tomkins had rose to nod Hitzlsperger's free-kick back across goal.

Ben Watson hacked Frederic Piquionne's effort off the line on 34 minutes with Ba set to pounce while Green produced excellent saves to keep out efforts from Diame and a Hugo Rodallega overhead kick.

Rodallega somehow managed to head the ball straight at Green minutes before the break, but Wigan's luck would turn in the second period as home manager Roberto Martinez threw caution to the wind by throwing on Sammon and Victor Moses for James McCarthy and Tom Cleverly at half-time.

N'Zogbia walloped a free-kick high into the right-hand corner of Green's net on 57 minutes after the Frenchman had been decked by Tomkins. With both teams throwing bodies forward in a search for goals, chances came and went but Sammon turned Daniel Gabbidon inside out before firping the ball past Green to make it 2-2.

There was already a plane circling the DW Stadium by this stage that read 'Avram Grant - MIllwall legend' as a series of wincing expressions began to emanate from the visiting support.

14  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / National commissioners to supervise Imo polls on: 5-05-2011 02:31 PM
National commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will be in charge of the crucial supplementary governorship elections holding on Friday in Imo State, officials of the electoral commission said yesterday. The final elections, holding in four local government areas of the state, is seen as a key test for the commission as it rounds up the 2011 general elections. Opposition parties had earlier threatened to pull out of the contest, which mostly pitches incumbent governor Ikedi Ohakim of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against frontrunner, Rochas Okorocha, unless the commission tightened its supervision of the exercise.

Mr Okorocha was ahead in the main elections held last week Tuesday, and his party, the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), insisted he be declared the winner pending the outcome of elections in the four local government areas.

Ahead of the polls, the APGA said it would only participate in the rescheduled polls on the condition that state indigenes, which it accused of colluding with the state governor, were removed from polling and collation duties.

“Ordinarily, we would have rejected the elections because our candidate met the requirements to have been elected a winner, but for the fact that INEC has ordered reelection. Whether it is legal or illegal, we have decided to participate but that will be on those conditions,” the party chairman Victor Umeh said in Abuja on Tuesday.

In a measure to soothe the opposition, INEC said all the electoral officers and collation officers in the state have been redeployed. Officials from other states will handle the election duties on Friday.

15  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / JAMB pledges to reduce incomplete results on: 5-05-2011 02:27 PM
ABUJA -Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Professor Dibu Ojerinde, has expressed the board’s determination to reduce cases of incomplete results in its examinations.

This was contained in a statement signed by JAMB’s Public Relations Officer, PRO, Timothy Oyedeji, on Tuesday.

Ojerinde said the board had spent N48 million on a train-the-trainer project to reduce cases of incomplete results but did not state the period within which the fund was expended.
He noted that no fewer than 82,000 candidates had incomplete results in the 2010 UTME, adding that although the figure was less than eight per cent of the total number of registered candidates, it was still high.

“JAMB is worried hence it has resolved to check the menace of incomplete results in the next examination, “Ojerinde said.

The Registrar added the Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Hafiz Ringim, had promised that the police would ensure a hitch-free 2011 UTME on June 11.

According to Prof. Ojerinde, all hands were on the deck to check malpractices in JAMB examinations.

Earlier, JAMB’s Director, Information Technology Services, Mr Olujide Adisa, had said the training, which began last week, would help in reducing high rate of incomplete results in UTME.

16  Forum / Politics / INEC Meet Over Imo State Deadlock on: 29-04-2011 02:23 PM
Confusion, fears and anxiety reigned supreme yesterday in the streets of Owerri, the Imo State capital as supporters of Governor Ikedi Ohakim of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and that of Rochas Okorocha of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) are claiming victory in the governorship poll of Tuesday.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which could not announce the final results of the governorship and state assembly elections in the state, called on all stakeholders to remain calm as the impasse would be resolved today.

The election was on Wednesday night declared inconclusive by the state returning officer, Prof. Enoch Akobundu, after declaring results for 23 out of 27 local government areas in the state.

Okorocha had already won 12 local government areas while the incumbent governor and candidate of the PDP trailed with victory in 11 local government areas.

A drama however ensued when the returning officer for Mbaitoli, Mr. Frank Mathias, after releasing results for the local government and giving copies to party agents appeared at the state collation centre to declare that he had no result.

18  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Africa:Kenya\Uganda Oil Pipeline Project at Stake on: 29-04-2011 02:05 PM

Political instability in Libya is beginning to take a heavy toll on the progress of the Kenya Uganda oil pipeline — one of the most critical regional infrastructure projects in East Africa.

Correspondence seen by The EastAfrican shows that Kenya and Uganda have now insisted that they will delay any equity injection into the joint venture with Libya’s Tamoil East Africa Ltd until after the project has taken off the ground.

The two governments have also demanded that the Libyans pay off landowners along the way leave of the project.

When the parties first signed a Heads of Agreement in January 2007, the understanding was that Kenya and Uganda would each inject 12.5 per cent in equity into the company.

It was also agreed that the two East African countries would contribute land on the way leave as part of their equity contribution.

In Kenya, the Ministry of Lands has released the compensation schedules for parcels of land along the project’s way-leave to be acquired through easements and outright land acquisition.

The submitted schedule contains about 2,107 formally and informally subdivided plots with an estimated total compensation cost of Ksh520 million ($6.19 million).

The tough conditions given to the Libyans by Nairobi and Kampala are a reflection of growing impatience about a project that was supposed to have been commissioned more than three years ago.

enrolling 700 university graduates and 2,300 women among the fresh entrants.

Many hopefuls were, however, turned away for failing to meet the new requirement of a minimum of Grade C in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination, or its equivalent.
