41  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / funeral turns happy after dead man awakes on: 14-05-2012 06:38 PM
The funeral of a 28 year-old waiter in southern Egypt turned into a celebration when he woke up after being declared dead.

Hospital officials had pronounced dead Hamdi Hafez al-Nubi, who came from the village of Naga al-Simman in the southern province of Luxor, after he suffered a heart attack while working.

His family says grieving relatives took him home and, according to Islamic tradition, washed his body and prepared him for burial Friday evening.

A doctor sent to sign the death certificate found it strange that his body was warm. At closer observation she discovered he was still alive.

His mother fainted upon hearing the good news. With the doctor's assistance, both al-Nubi and his mother were awakened and soon were celebrating with guests.
42  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Police re-arrest barons who bribed NDLEA with N5m on: 14-05-2012 03:40 PM
Suspected drug barons, who were released by the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, have been re-arrested by the police.
Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, Giade

A source told PUNCH Metro that the barons allegedly bribed some NDLEA officials with N5m before they regained their freedom.

The barons were re-arrested on May 2, 2012 following a tip-off that they were back in business on Aka Road, Uyo.

Wondering how the suspects identified simply as Beauty and Rose regained their freedom, the policemen probed them and discovered that they bribed the NDLEA officials.

When their apartment was searched, our source said large quantities of cocaine, heroin, and marijuana were found there.

Our source said the release of the women and their re-arrest were already causing disaffection between the police and the NDLEA.

It was learnt that immediately the suspects were re-arrested, they were transferred from Area 'C' Police Command to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

Our source said, "The police had long transferred the women to CID because of possible attack by their friends and relatives.

"There have been frequent visits by friends and officials of the NDLEA with regards to these women. The police are not sure what they are up to. But security matter is a serious matter; no serious-minded security man must tolerate this.

"This is a serious matter. The NDLEA must investigate its men and bring the culprits to book. This act is a dent on our image and the country."

Successive visits to Area 'C' Command by our correspondent to ascertain the true position of things and also to speak with the women proved abortive, as the police insisted that the issue was NDLEA's affairs.

The Sector Commander of the NDLEA, Mrs. Ruth Obi, confirmed the incident, saying the matter was being investigated.

She said the agency was determined to rid the command of undesirable elements.

Obi said some NDLEA senior officials had been sent to Uyo from Lagos for a thorough investigation into the matter.
43  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Gunmen kill kick boxing medalist in A/Ibom on: 14-05-2012 03:37 PM
Akwa Ibom kick boxer Alexander Joseph, nick named “Ibom”, has been killed by gunmen.

An eye witness told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Ibom was attacked by his assailants at about 9.30 am on Saturday at Uyo Township Stadium during a training session.

They told NAN that no fewer than five persons had trailed the victim to the stadium and inflicted several machete cuts on him before firing three gunshots on his neck.

Some athletes, who trained with Ibom the previous day, said that the deceased was in top form for 2012 National Sports Festival scheduled to hold in Lagos later this year.

The athletes described the murder of Ibom as terrifying, adding that he attempted to resist the assassins.

Mr Onyeka Orji, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed the incident and said that the police had made some arrest on incident, while investigation continues.

Reacting to the news of Ibom's death, Mr Aniedi Dickson, the State Director of Sports, told NAN that the deceased was a strong boy.

“It is quite unfortunate, he was our medal hopeful, he is a very strong boy, and his death may dampen the moral of our boys.

“We organise trial for them every quarter in the last trial two weeks ago, he was very strong, he was excellent," Dickson said.

Dickson, who said that he was yet to be briefed by victim’s coach, said that the demise of the boxer was painful.

NAN recalls that Ibom won a bronze medal for Akwa Ibom in the 2009 National Sports Festival hosted by Kaduna State. (NAN)
44  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / FG to release list of Boko Haram sponsors on: 7-05-2012 09:00 AM
In their bid to end the ceaseless attacks being unleashed on some parts of the country by the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, security chiefs have prepared a list of the sect's backers. The list is said to contain names of suspected backers of the sect and other terror groups.

A security source told our correspondent on Friday that the list was compiled by top security chiefs at a meeting held to strategise on how to end the spiralling violence.

The official said the decision to compile the list was born out of the belief of the security chiefs that the anti-terrorism battle could be won sooner than expected if people linked with violence were exposed.

The security chiefs were said to have worked on the intelligence report that some top politicians had been giving financial backing to terror groups with the aim of destabilising the present administration.

The official said the security officials had resolved to formally inform the office of the National Security Adviser about the alleged involvement of such politicians supporting terror groups.
Apparently supporting the claims of the NSA, Gen. Owoye Azazi, that some undemocratic practices within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the build-up to the 2011 general elections fuelled the violence, they heaped the blame on those they called greedy politicians.

They went further to identify the alleged politicians to include those who held the opinion that only persons from their region could contest the presidential election after the demise of President Umaru Yar'Adua.

“The meeting heaped the blame on greedy and selfish politicians who don't want Nigerians from outside their region to rule the country,” the source said.
He described the meeting as fruitful, adding that Nigerians would soon be seeing results.
45  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / JTF destroys 600 illegal refineries in Delta on: 5-05-2012 03:28 PM
WARRI – THE 3 Battalion of Nigerian Army, Effurun, and Joint Task Force, JTF, yesterday, destroyed over 600 illegal refineries in Mango village and Gbekebor waterways in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.

Commanding Officer, 3 Battalion, Lt. Col. Ifeanyi Otu, who led the over four hours operations, described those behind the illicit trade as economic saboteurs.

He also lamented the environmental degradation caused by the illegal refineries and called on the perpetrators to desist from the act and take to legitimate businesses to better their lots.

He noted that the JTF would intensify patrol of the waterways and other flash points and called for cooperation between the public and the military task force.

He said:"This is a very terrible situation. It is an act of economic sabotage that the Federal Government is preaching against. No decent society should condone it. We will continue to destroy them and also carry out enlightenment campaigns for people to realise that this is not the right business to embark upon because the damage is enormous. You can also see the environmental degradation wreaked on the ecosystem for selfish reasons. I advise them to desist from it."

Over 2,000 drums, 1,000 surface tanks, four Cotonou locally made boats, several hoses, three pumping machines, two generating sets, filling machines and many operating huts were destroyed in the operation.

Vanguard investigation revealed that the over three kilometres area near Gbekebor had been polluted and over two kilometres area near the Mango community had also been polluted.
46  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Renounce cultism or spend 10yrs in jail on: 5-05-2012 03:25 PM
YENAGOA- BAYELSA State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has warned cultists in the state to renounce membership or be prepared to spend 10 years behind bars.

Governor Dickson gave the warning in Yenagoa, while assenting to seven bills presented to him by the State House of Assembly.

The governor noted that with the signing of the Secret Cults (Prohibition) Law 2012, all cult groups in the state had been proscribed.

He warned that anybody convicted would serve 10 years imprisonment without an option of fine, noting that any landlord who allowed his building to be used for meetings by cultists, would, on conviction, forfeit such building to the state.

Governor Dickson, however, said any cultist who was prepared to renounce his membership of cult groups would be declared free of any complicity and given protection by the state.

Speaking on some of the other Bills, Governor Dickson said the "Bayelsa State Income and Expenditure Transparency Bill 2012", along with the "Bayelsa State Fiscal Responsibility (Amendment) Bill 2012" were intended to entrench transparency and accountability in the business of governance and also place at the doorstep of the people, the right to inquire about any aspect of the government of the day.
47  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Bomb scare at Lagos airport *As IGP orders CPs to beef up security at media hous on: 3-05-2012 07:09 PM
THERE was a bomb scare on Wednesday at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, prompting operatives to further beef up security at the airport to forestall any eventual bomb attack.

Following the alarm, security officials from the anti-bomb squad, the airport police and security officials at the Terminal Two of the local airport being managed by Bi-Courtney Services Limited, embarked on the screening of all vehicles and passengers going into the terminal.

The tight security put up by the security officials made it tough for travellers to gain access to the local airport to board their flights or purchase tickets.

As a result of this, passengers, especially those who had flights to board in the early hours, had to trek some metres to the terminal in order not to miss their flights, following the heavy traffic the screening caused.

At a point, the anti-bomb squad attached to the local wing of the airport had to make use of the BASL security metal detectors to carry out their checks on the horde of vehicles that plied that route, especially when work resumed on Wednesday after the May Day celebrations.

Many passengers, however, condemned the crude manner the anti-bomb squad carried out the exercise when they left the buck of the work to the Bi-Courtney security.

"This is most absurd. The anti-bomb squad, who were supposed to actually check the vehicles themselves, did not take the bomb scare seriously. Otherwise, they wouldn't have allowed the other guys carry out the checks. It is even pathetic that they don't even have their own material. As you can see, they rather chose to look into the booths of the cars. This is a crude method of carrying out checks when they are supposed to be fully equipped," some passengers said.

However, in a telephone interview, the police commissioner in charge of the airport, Mr Olatunji CaulCrick, said the exercise became imperative due to security reports received by the command which indicated a possible bomb attack on the busy terminal.

CaulCrick said it was a normal routine as the police would not leave anything to chance in ensuring a seamless travel experience for airport users, affirming that the police had been ordered to carry out checks whenever the need arose.

The checks led to vehicular traffic spreading to Ikeja and Oshodi areas of the airport.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar, has ordered all state commissioners of police to provide adequate security for all media houses in the country.

The directive is coming on the heels of last week's bombing of ThisDay newspaper's office in Abuja.

The IGP, who was speaking during a parley with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday night, expressed worry on the attacks on media houses, wondering what harm they posed as they were merely doing their jobs.

He warned that attacks on media houses were unacceptable and vowed that the police would do all within their powers to put a stop to the menace of Boko Haram in the country.

On the postings of newly promoted Assistant Inspectors General (AIGs) to various zones, the IGP announced that the AIGs were proceeding on a one-week executive training at the Centre for Management Development (COMMAND) next week.

He said, "this is to prepare them for the enormous responsibility of supervising the zones and as soon as they finish, they will all be posted."

Lamenting the decay in the force, the IGP said that indiscipline and corruption had permeated the fabrics of the force, vowing to fight these social ills.

He said that the police training colleges will soon wear a new look, as private organisations were now partnering with the police to restore its past glory.

The IGP assured Nigerians that the public confidence which had been lost would soon be restored
48  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / SSS arrests supplier of bomb chemicals to Boko Haram *Recovers 35 drums of chemi on: 3-05-2012 07:00 PM
THE Director, State Security Service (SSS), Kano State, Mr Bassy Eteng, has paraded a middle-aged man, Alhaji Ayuba Usman,
who was found in possession of 35 big drums of highly combustible chemicals and substances being used to make bomb and other Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) by terrorists to kill innocent people.
Chemicals are controlled items and they are supposed to be sold to people legitimately for economic use, but we found some individuals selling them to members of the public who turn them to harm innocent persons," Eteng said.

Disclosing this while addressing pressmen on Wednesday in Kano, Eteng said the arrest of Usman was effected after a tip-off by a suspect already in the custody of security operatives.

He said: "You were aware of yesterday's operation. Today is a further build-up. The suspect brought before you is a suspect who we found, from investigations, has links with some extremist elements.

"Based on the statement made by the high-profile suspect the service is dealing with, we were able to know that the suspect, Ayuba Usman, had been providing very combustible chemicals to the extremist group. These are the chemicals being used in making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs)," he stated.

According to him, "he was arrested yesterday in Kano. He is the owner of all the substances found in his shop. These substances are controlled items.

"The suspects in custody were able to identify their main link, from whom they were getting the above materials in Kano. They mix this thing with fertiliser. This happened to be Ayuba Usman.

"He was not just picked up just because he was selling those materials, but those in custody also identified him, described him, where his shop is and that led us to arrest him."

Eteng, therefore, added that the command was "following the issue very painstakingly to be able to know what is happening.

Apart from just arresting suspects or going after suspects, who were involved in throwing out these materials to kill innocent people in Kano and other parts of the country, there is the need for us to go deeper to be able to know the network and know the source of this issue."
49  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Breaking News: 34 People killed in Potiskum cattle market attack on: 3-05-2012 06:52 PM
(AFP) An attack on a cattle market in northeastern city of Potiskum by gunmen armed with explosives has left at least 34 dead and the toll is likely to climb, an emergency source said on Thursday.

“Thirty-four bodies were deposited at the hospital,” the official said on condition of anonymity of the attack late Wednesday in Potiskum because he was not authorised to speak publicly.

He said the toll was likely to be more than 50 dead because families were also burying relatives’ bodies without bringing them to the hospital.

A gang of gunmen with explosives have attacked a cattle market in the city of Potiskum, burning it down and leaving a number of people dead, residents and police said Thursday.

The attack late Wednesday was said to be in reprisal for an incident earlier in the day, when the gang sought to rob the market but were fought off by traders who caught one of the attackers, a police source said.

The man who was caught was doused in petrol and a tyre was placed around his neck before he was burnt to death, according to the source and residents.

“There was an attack on Potiskum cattle market yesterday by suspected armed robbers who threw explosives and burnt down the market with all the livestock,” the police official said on condition of anonymity.

“It is too early to say how many people were affected in the attack, which happened at night.”

Residents reported seeing bodies being taken away, but the number of casualties was unclear.
50  Forum / Politics / Lawmaker, journalists escape death as suspected Fulanis attack village on: 3-05-2012 06:49 PM
Jos- Member representing Riyom Constituency, Mr. Daniel Dem and some journalists, Monday, escaped death by the whiskers as suspected Fulani attackers fired several gunshots into Kak village during an inspection of villages destroyed earlier in recent attacks.

The lawmaker was busy conducting the journalists round the about 10 villages which had come under attack from suspected Fulani herdsmen when volleys of gunshots were again fired into the village.

They all scampered into safety to escape being hit by bullets from the attackers said to have hidden behind the rocks in the area. They abandoned vehicles and ran to a safe distance until the shooting stopped.

Several houses and a church were torched while over 10 people were killed on Monday when Bangai and Kak villages came under attack almost simultaneously rendering hundreds of people from the two villages homeless.

Dem was in tears after the escape to a safe area about two kilometres from the village, saying he had witnessed what his constituents were going through first hand.

He said: "I thought it was a joke. I never knew this is what my people have been passing through; I had a close shave with death. You newsmen have seen it yourselves that the victims are not just telling lies about their predicament.

"I am happy no journalists was hurt, but my people are in danger. There is no security to help them out. Government knows about the problem; security agents know of the attacks but no one is responding to my distress call.”
51  Forum / Politics / Jonathan's agents carried out two bombings on: 3-05-2012 06:42 PM

Detained leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, Mr. Henry Okah, has insisted that President Goodluck Jonathan's agents sponsored the March 15, 2010 and October 1, 2010 bombings in Warri and Abuja respectively for political considerations.
Okah made the allegation in a 194-paragraph affidavit deposed to in the South Gauteng High court in Johannesburg, South Africa in Case No: A570/10.
The allegations first came to light in an interview Okah granted Arabic satellite television, Aljazeera, in October 2010, weeks after the blast. In the interview, he blamed the attacks on Jonathan's aides and claimed he was arrested for refusing to influence MEND, to retract its claim of responsibility.

Since then, Okah has been denied bail at least twice, with one at the South Gauteng High Court, Johannesburg, where he is filing a new application for bail based on “new facts.”
The sworn affidavit was expected to be filed at the court between Tuesday and Wednesday as part of his renewed bid to secure bail, after spending more than one year in a South African jail.

His trial is set to start on October 1, 2012, exactly two years after a devastating blast that occurred less than a kilometre from the Eagle Square in Abuja, where Jonathan was attending Nigeria's 50th anniversary.
He said the March 2010 car bomb blast (which he said occurred on March 14, 2010) at the Government House Annex, Warri, where South-South governors were attending an amnesty meeting, was intended to pave the way for the removal of Delta State Governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan, and his replacement by the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe.

“It is my belief that President Goodluck Jonathan's government working with a faction of MEND planned and executed the bombings of 14 March 2010 and 1 October 2010.
“The purpose of the 14 March 2010 bombing in my opinion was to create an atmosphere of insecurity in Niger Delta where President Goodluck Jonathan at that time, was fighting to oust the governor Mr. Emmanuel Uduaghan whom President Goodluck Jonathan intended to replace with his Minister for Niger Delta, Mr Godsday Orubebe,” Okah said in the affidavit.

On the Independence Day bombing, which claimed 10 lives, Okah said it was meant to sway public opinion against the North and some of its leaders who were planning to run against Jonathan in the April 2011 presidential election.

Okah has been held at the Johannesburg Prison since October 2, 2010, and is currently standing trial for alleged involvement in the October 1 bomb attack.
He alleged that Jonathan was upset when MEND claimed responsibility for the October 1 attack, against a plan to blame it on Northern elements.

He stated, “The bombings of 1 October 2010 were also intended by President Goodluck Jonathan government to create anti-North sentiments nationwide in order to galvanize support from other sections of Nigeria against other Northern candidates in the Presidential election.

“Under the arrangement, MEND, I believe, was not to claim responsibility for the bombings which the Nigerian government hoped to pin on General Babangida and other Northern elements. The claim of responsibility by the central group for a bombing, possibly carried out by a faction of MEND, punctured the plans of President Goodluck Jonathan to round up his opposition and hold them in custody until after the elections.”

He claimed to have come under pressure from some of Jonathan's aides to get MEND to retract its claim of responsibility for the bombing, recalling that his “refusal to cooperate in this scheme resulted in President Goodluck Jonathan placing a call to President Jacob Zuma during the evening of 1 October 2010, requesting President Zuma's personal assistance in securing my arrest. My noncooperation was interpreted by President Goodluck Jonathan as support for the Northern politicians.

“The South African Government's direct interference was responsible for securing search and arrest warrants against me.”
Okah also claimed to have influenced Jonathan's appointment of Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke as minister of petroleum resources, at the prompting of a Jonathan aide. He alleged that between April 4 and 5, 2010, he received approximately 20 calls from Alison-Madueke, asking him to “put in a good word for her” with Jonathan to consider her for the position.

He also countered evidence and public statements by the SSS detailing his alleged involvement in the October 1 blast. Okah provided telephone numbers used by Jonathan's aides and Alison-Madueke in reaching him.
The Presidency has, however, described Okah's allegations as “false.”
In a statement by presidential spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, the Presidency said the allegations were without any factual foundation and promised that government would full representation in court once the trial commenced fully.

The statement reads, “The attention of the Presidency has been drawn to reports in the media of allegations made against President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in an affidavit said to have been sworn to by Mr. Henry Okah, who is facing trial in South Africa for his involvement in terrorist acts against the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The Presidency categorically affirms that these allegations are false in their entirety and without any factual foundation.

“As the case of Mr. Okah's involvement in the plotting and execution of terrorist attacks in Nigeria is already before a court of competent jurisdiction in South Africa, the Presidency does not intend to say anymore on the matter for now and will, in accordance with due process and international law, make a full representation on the matter to the court when the trial opens.

“The Presidency also advises the Nigerian media to respect the sanctity of the legal and judicial processes in this matter and avoid becoming willing tools in the hands of Mr. Okah and his agents in an entirely diversionary trial by the media aimed only at falsely impugning the character and integrity of the President and officials of his administration.

59  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Security agents bust notorious fraud syndicate on: 6-02-2012 04:49 PM
A suspected fraudster, Mohammed Ogwurude, 42, wept as he explained his involvement with a gang of suspects that specialised in swindling unsuspecting victims in Port Harcourt.

Omojefe, Ogwurude and Avery paraded at the SSS Command in Port Harcourt.
Ogwurude, who wept and pleaded for leniency at the State Security Service Command in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, said the need to pay the sum of N200,000 house rent to his landlord made him accept the gang's invitation to join them.

The suspect was recently arrested alongside one Amil Avery, who allegedly introduced him to the business of defrauding rich and well placed men in the society.

Ogwurude confessed that members of the gang had told him to provide his account number, where their victims unknowingly pay in huge sums of money after being deceived.

Ogwurude, who said he had a wife and three children, regretted allowing himself to be deceived by Avery. He said the latter did not give the impression that he was a swindler.

He said, “It is true that I gave Avery my bank account number and I did that because he did not tell me that he was a fraudster. I decided to give him my account number because he promised to pay me some money in return for my kindness.

“I actually asked Avery the business he did for a living and why he wanted my bank account number, but he told me it was for genuine business. I owed my landlord and I needed to pay him N200,000 as rent. I was under financial pressure and I agreed to give my bank account number to Avery.

“I was shocked when the SSS arrested me. I want to use this opportunity to plead with them to release me because I acted out of ignorance. Avery and his friend only gave me N180,000 later; that was all they gave me.”

The law caught up with Ogwurude, who claimed to be a naval officer, and his colleagues when they attempted to swindle the managing director of a new generation bank. The bank MD had played along with them after informing security agents of an attempt to defraud him of N40m.

The SSS swung into action and arrested Avery and Ogwurude, while the alleged leader of the gang, Tony Allagoa is still at large. Unlike Avery, who was picked up at the Presidential Hotel, another suspect known as Efe Omojefe, was arrested at the headquarters of the Niger Delta Development Commission while trying to swindle a top official of the commission.

The SSS Director, Rivers State Command, Mr. Segun Agbaje, said the sum of N12m had already passed through Ogwurude's account, adding that members of the syndicate were always dropping the names of those in government to swindle well-placed Nigerians.

“When Ogwurude, whose bank account has been used on several occasions by the syndicate to receive payments, was subsequently apprehended, we noticed that the sum of N12m had passed through his account to this syndicate,” Agbaje said.

He explained that efforts were in top gear to apprehend the fleeing members of the syndicate, including Allagoa, Nnamdi Maurice and Charles Bendo, adding that the suspects in their custody will be made to face the wrath of the law.
