Forum / Politics / Boko Haram gunmen kill 2 Igbo traders, muslim cleric |
on: 12-02-2012 11:50 PM
|
Gunmen have shot dead two Igbo Christian traders in Potiskum,Yobe state amid a wave of violence blamed on Islamist group Boko Haram. The killing was done yesterday, according to the AFP.
The victims, who were brothers, owned a prominent shop in the city, which has been repeatedly struck by violence blamed on the Islamist sect.
“The two gunmen dressed in white robes arrived at the shop,” said market trader Kabir Ahmed. “They produced rifles from under their robes and shot the two traders dead.”
A police source who requested anonymity confirmed the killings and that of a Muslim cleric in the city late Friday.
Security sources have previously told AFP that a group of gunmen linked to Boko Haram has carried out targeted killings in the city in recent weeks.
A church guard in Potiskum was shot dead on January 30 after suspected members of the Islamist group on January 11 killed four Christians in the city who, like Saturday’s victims, were members of the Igbo tribe.
The Igbo ethnic group is overwhelmingly Christian and its members generally originate from the country’s east.
Boko Haram has repeatedly targeted Christians, notably in coordinated attacks on Christmas Day.
The group has also killed Muslim clerics who publicly criticised its extremist tactics, but its recent assaults have primarily been directed at the police and other symbols of authority.
Few analysts see Boko Haram as a cohesive group. It is believed to have a series of factions, including a hardcore Islamist cell.
Boko Haram has killed more than 200 people already this year, according to Human Rights Watch.
The Igbo nationalist group, MASSOB, has urged Igbo traders to leave the North.

Forum / Politics / Northern Group backs Boko Haram on Quit Order |
on: 1-02-2012 06:18 PM
|
The Northern based political group, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF has justified the 2 January Boko Haram order issued to southerners residing in the North to leave or face the action of the dreaded group.
The group today at a press conference in Kaduna at the Sokoto Road ACF headquarters said those blaming Boko Haram for issuing the order were unfair, when in the first place the southerners were the first to order northerners to leave the South .
Though the ACF Chairman , Alhaji Aliko Mohammed said the group is not supporting Boko Haram for issuing the quit order, there was need to properly understand that the southerners started first before Boko Haram retaliated.
According to him, the federal government should wake up to the responsibility of ensuring the security of Nigerians where ever they reside to avert the situation where a group will order another Nigerian group to leave his area of domicile.
On the large numbers of Igbos leaving the North, Mohammed claimed that northern leaders have not asked the Igbos to leave.
But he quickly added that the Igbos could go if they want to go’’.
The ACF told President Goodluck Jonathan to name those he said are Boko Haram members in his cabinet and gave an assurance that the group would expose these collaborators immediately.
”Government should uncover the true identity of the Boko Haram members in order to be able to determine their demands or grieviances as well as address those that may be genuine and in accordance with our laws’’.
The ACF chair, Aliko Mohammed emphasised that ACF is not only worried about the spate of bomb attacks in the north , but also the inability of the Jonathan led administration to deal decisively with the perpetrators.
He urged the federal government to give security guaranty to members and leaders of Boko Haram when eventually they come out for dialogue.
However, while condemning the actions of the Boko Haram, Mohammed reiterated that it is also necessary to call upon the federal government and all leaders and those in authority to recall the 1963 UN resolution of 2010, which urges governments around the world to address underlying causes of civil unrest and social conflicts rather than resort to military power that rarely solves them.
He also said the federal and state government should be seen to demonstrate fairness and justice in dealing with all issues of insecurity and infringemnet of the laws of the country.

| Firstly, no one can consent to be ''raped'', secondly, show the public a tangible form of evidence to back your claims. To conclude, if this report is true, then I would say that one or more of the rapists have someone who's a high officer in the police force or the government. After watching such a video that brings tears to the eyes of a grown man, you close the case? you guys are a joke!
Well said brother. That Police commisioner is a disgrace to Law enforcement. No woman will ever consent to be gang raped. This is a classic example of bribery and other illegal, backroom deals/agreements design to prevent justice. Folks, the truth is that two of those rapists are sons of very prominent people in Abia state., One of them is a close friend of the present governor as reported by the online news/blog 24/7. The victim was offered money to say she agreed to the whole crime. She had rejected the offer because she wanted to see the rapists punished. This conclusion of this investigation is very sad. dan FulaniCannot be far 4rm the truth.
