7  Forum / The Buzz Central / PREGNANCY: BROTHERS MAD AT PETER OKOYE on: 9-07-2008 12:43 AM
The Okoye brothers are one happy family. Jude, Tony, peter and Paul all work and live together. On the outside, everything looks cool and smooth – but they’re the first to tell you it’s not always as smooth as it looks.
Peter and Paul have said it several times; ‘yes we quarrel, we argue, we figh. But it makes us better. It’s always for the good of Psquare’.

Now, it appears there’s a feud rocking the brothers’ camp again. This time tough, it’s not about which song to use or drop, or whih concept to adopt for a new video. It’s because Peter is soon going to be a fther!

An inside source revealed exclusively to AyeniTheGreat that the Okoye brothers, especially Jude are ‘not happy’ with Peter, following news that his 35 year-old lover Lola Omotayo is carrying his baby.

Peter, 29, has been dating Lola (an executive at FK:G2) for a while now; and the lovebirds have stuck together, despite recent rumours of an affair between Peter and ex-MBGN Munachi Abii.

Last week, Lola confirmed to reporters in Lagos that she’s three-months pregnant for Peter.

‘Jude is not happy. He’s their elder brother. He’s always looking out for them. He’s made a lot of sacrifices for them these past years. You think he doesn’t want to get married too?’ queried the source who claimed to be present when Jude was registering his displeasure.

Peter and Paul had continually insisted that Marriage was not on their plans for now. Last year. They told me in Lagos : ‘we’re still young… so marriage is not on the cards for now. It’s no even close. It’ll make us lose 50% of our female fans. Even in five years, we’ll still not be thinking of marriage’.

And, really, they’re still staying true to their words. Peter insists he’s not getting married yet. Paul, who’s dating a beautiful lady called Anita is also still very single. But, did anyone see one of the guys having a child out of wedlock? No. Not just because their mother runs an christain ministry, but because, because of their image, no one saw Peter or Paul going the way of 2face or Tony Tetuila.
Perhaps Peter and Lola will change their minds and decide to become husband and wife before the baby comes. After all, Peter has told us (in a 2007 interview): ‘of course my parents don’t have any problems with me dating a Yoruba girl. I can marry anyone I like. I can marry a Muslim tomorrow, it doesn’t matter. It’s my own choice’.

12  Forum / The Buzz Central / 'Baby Konga' banned on radio by NBC (Nigeria Broadcasting Comission) on: 28-05-2008 06:04 PM
Lawal Olalekan Olumo a.k.a. Konga, in this interview, explains why the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC), may have placed a ban on his hit single, 'Baby Konga' from being played on broadcast stations.

Q: Konga, recently, the NBC announced that your hit single, Baby Konga, has been banned from airplay. Why was the song banned?
A: Really, I must confess that the reason that was given for the ban is vague to me. Baby Konga, in what we call 'Konga' language, means the most beautiful girl in Africa and to me, my listeners know the message I am trying to pass through the song. It is not vulgar as they claim. The language was only coded in eno (Yoruba slang) and Konga. Even if they want to claim that the language is vulgar, that's why we coded the lyrics because of the children. I know that what the song is all about is: Baby Konga, (meaning the most beautiful girl in Africa), Bo Konga (come to the party) and anyone that wants to spoil the party, E ju won si Konga (kick them out). That's all. So, I don't see any vulgar words in that. In a nutshell, what the song means is, come and have a fun-filled time.

Q: How come you decided to code the song because of the children, as you claim, when it is not vulgar?
A: That was because I just wanted to code my songs in a 'Konga' style. It is not because it contains vulgar language.

Q: If it does not have any vulgar language, what is Ileke konga, as you sang in the song?
A: Okay, this is how 'Ileke Konga' came in to the song: 'Baby Konga' 'So konga' 'Di Konga' 'Ileke Konga' (Most beautiful girl in Africa, shake your buttocks), 'Ileke' are beads which is currently being promoted among African women, who wear them around their waist. So, I decided to bring it into the song to describe the real African woman, since my style, 'Konga,' is deeply from Africa and aimed at projecting the image of Africa. That's why I also wear beads around my neck during shows since I cannot wear them round my waist like a woman. I prefer wearing those beads instead of gold, diamond or any kind of foreign jewelry. I think the only problem is that, they don't understand the 'Konga' language.

Q: Where does the 'Konga' style come from and how did you develop it?
A: Really, right from my childhood days, I had always wanted to carve an image for myself. When I was coming into the music industry, I went through a lot of research and met people. I am a rap artiste and I observed that most rap artistes are 'rasta,' so I felt I should come up with my own style since I understand the eno language very well. The 'Konga' style is peculiar to me and basically from me, because I want to teach people the 'Konga' style through my music. And one of the advantages of the style is that it is secured.

Q: Has the NBC written you on the vulgar parts of the song?
A: No, but the truth is that I can interpret the song to them from the beginning to the end. And what they have only said about it is that there seems to be a mix up somewhere.

Q: Don't you think the NBC can't find how you arrived at 'E pon mi si Konga' (fetch water into the well), which confuses virtually all the listeners. Is it possible to fetch water into the well?
A: Just as I said earlier, my style is eno and what e pon mi si konga means is that everybody should join the party. It has no vulgar meaning and the issue of beads (Ileke Konga), means shake the beads and join the groove. I think this whole controversy is the brainchild of some of my detractors. I know God will never allow their evil plans to manifest because I believe every stumbling block fashioned against my life will be a stepping stone.

Q: Before the ban circulated to the Nigerian media, were you served any notification letter by the NBC?
A: No, not even as we are now discussing. We have been to their office at Race Course and they told us they are responsible for the ban. They demanded that we replay the song and explain the lyrics to them, which I did and they concluded that it might be a mix up, or probably, there's another version of the song which may be vulgar and immoral. So, why would any one just wake up and decide to spoil my career?

Q: When writing the song, who were your target audience?
A: Everyone that has imbibed the hip-hop culture. The old, the young and the unborn. I want to spread the language through music.

Q: Although the song is catchy, how do you intend to endear your 'Konga' style to the hearts of people in other continents?
A: With time, people will embrace it. And even through my research, I discovered that during the colonial era, some of those that enslaved our forefathers even got to know about this eno slang and spoke it. Apart from the language, now you can dance to the music because it is very danceable. Thank God, my fan base is widening by the day and even the pace at which it is moving, I don't think I can meet it for now.

Q: When recording a song, an average Nigerian musician would dream of clinching a Grammy award with it, just as I'm sure you did. Now, did you ever envisage this kind of problem?
A: Yes, because I know life is all about ups and downs. I was prepared to face the challenges ahead but I waited this long to release the song, four years after it was recorded, to avert impending dangers ahead.

Q: Now that the song has been banned, what are your plans?
A: I will go on another research, while I will make sure that whatever I am coming out with is well furnished, fresh and won't have any loopholes. I want to make sure that everyone who hears it will attest to the fact that I am a world class musician.

Q: You came out as a promising music act and your hit single has been banned from the airwaves. Now, don't you think your career is in jeopardy?
A: I have always prayed to God to lift me up and let me achieve my dreams in life. Although this situation is making me scared, I believe God is in control. This is just going to be a challenge that will put me on the right path and I hope sooner, God will further put me in the limelight.

Q: Do you have any plan to redo the song if the need arises?
A: Yes, as a matter of fact, we are currently working on that in the studio. The reason is that I want to translate what was meant in the 'Konga' style of Baby Konga.

Q: So, have you accepted that Baby Konga is banned for real?
A: No. I don't think it is banned because I don't have any letter to that effect. There's no letter regarding the ban and nobody can just come and ban my song without explanation. But I have only decided to take it easy with them. Soon, we shall sort things out because they don't have any evidence for now.

Q: The song Baby Konga has received nominations for awards like GhaNaija Awards coming up next month (March), Hip Hop World Awards and the forthcoming Gbedu Awards. Don't you think the ban placed on your work may affect your chances?
A: I pray it does not affect it but... I believe God is in control and He won't allow me to weep over what I suffered for many years to achieve. However, if I don't clinch those awards, I will congratulate whoever wins and accept my fate.

14  Forum / Politics / Nigerian president orders Shell, Exxon to pay oil arrears on: 20-05-2008 11:05 PM

ABUJA (AFP) - Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua Tuesday ordered the state-run oil firm NNPC to recover payment arrears of 1.91 billion dollars (1.22 billion euros) from Shell and ExxonMobil, a statement said.

The sum represents outstanding payments on the Production Sharing Contracts (PSC) on the Bonga and Erha oilfields, accounting for about 20 percent of Nigeria's total oil production, it said.

"ExxonMobil affiliate fully complies with all laws and regulations and has paid taxes and royalties to Nigeria accordingly," ExxonMobil said in response, in an official statement read to AFP.

"Our affiliate routinely has ongoing discussions with a number of government agencies on a variety of topics, including tax. We do not comment on ongoing discussions," it said.

"As these matters are subject of ongoing discussions between the NNPC, SNEPCO (Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company) and other partners in block OML 118 (the Bonga field) we have no further public comments to make at this stage", a SNEPCO official said.

SNEPCO, an affiliate of ExxonMobil, is a Nigerian oil and gas exploration and production company.

A senior Shell official, who asked not to be named, told AFP that the company was consulting with other partners, including the NNPC, on its reaction to the government statement.

Nigeria is Africa's largest oil producer.

The government directive is in line with the recommendations of a panel set up by Yar'Adua to determine whether Nigeria was losing money in production sharing costs in the deep offshore oilfields, the statement said.

Yar'Adua also ordered the government tax agency to "pursue" income tax payments from SNEPCO and Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited on the operation of the Bonga and Erha oil fields
15  Forum / Politics / Iyabo Obasanjo Reappears, Remanded in Police Custody on: 20-05-2008 10:51 PM
After spending several weeks in hiding, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, yesterday appeared before the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court over allegations of graft.
This is coming as the Senate yesterday said that it would not abandon her.
She was alleged to have collected N10 million from the Ministry of Health to fund the committee’s capacity-building seminar in Ghana from March 16 to 20.
The N10 million was said to be part of the unspent N300 million 2007 budget of the Health Ministry, which was shared by top officials of the Ministry as Christmas gifts.
Obasanjo-Bello has been evading arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officials since the matter was charged to court.
She was charged along with 10 other top officials of the Ministry, including two former Ministers - Professor Adenike Grange and Mr. Gabriel Aduku - for sharing the proceeds of corruption.
In an attempt to avoid journalists at the court premises yesterday, she was smuggled out of the court through the judge’s chambers and taken by riot policemen to a waiting white 18-seater Toyota bus with registration number Abuja AU 329 YAB, which sped off the vicinity around 12.17 pm.
Obasanjo-Bello had arrived the court at 8.47am in a Land Cruiser Toyota Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) with registration number MY 456 AAA.
The trial judge, Justice Garba, asked her to return to court tomorrow to properly take her plea, but her lawyer, Bankole Akomolafe, insisted that if the threat by the EFCC to arrest the accused was considered and the fact that she voluntarily appeared in court, it would be better for her to take the plea immediately.
Bankole argued that it was not the first time Obasanjo-Bello appeared in court as she had always done so through her lawyer.
The charge was read out to her and she pleaded not guilty.
The accused, whose offence was contained in counts 55 and 56 of the charge, was alleged to have collected N10 million from the Ministry of Health knowing that the money was stolen from the unspent budget from the Ministry.
Moving the application for her bail, Akomolafe pointed out  that the accused was a commissioner for health in Ogun State and a senator of the federal republic.
He argued that having reported to court on her volition, she had demonstrated responsibility and would not jump bail, urging the court to admit her to bail on liberal terms.
Opposing the bail application, EFCC lawyer, James Binang, said because of the ugly antecedent of the case, there are some facts the complainant wants to place before the court through affidavit.
He urged the court to deny the accused bail, as she is facing a joint trial involving other accused persons who were ordered to present formal application before they enjoyed the discretion of the court.
He said Grange, despite her office, obeyed the court order by filing formal application, which was responded to by the prosecutor.
He said he wished the same gestures were extended to the applicant in the instant case even as he cited sections 341 and 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code and the case of Ahmed Elebute, who he said was a senator and made himself available to court.
Binang urged the court to discountenance the application and treat Obasanjo-Bello the same way the other accused were treated, as “a sauce for the goose is a sauce for the gander”.
But just before the judge could say anything on the application, Obasanjo-Bello’s lawyer, Akomolafe, expressed fear about sending his client to the EFCC custody.
He said the anti-graft body had consistently harassed the accused and it would be fair if she was remanded in police custody pending the ruling on the application for bail.
Justice Garba denied the bail and adjourned ruling till tomorrow while fixing hearing in the substantive matter for 5th of June 2008.
He, however, ordered that the accused be remanded in Maitama police station, a distance of less than two kilometres from the court.
When Obasanjo-Bello arrived at the Maitama Police Station on Nile Street at about 3pm, she was detained in a private room upstairs near the office of the DPO, Alhaji MD Shehu.
Security at the police station was immediately tightened while the main gate was locked.
It was not clear whether she was allowed to receive visitors, but several vehicles with tinted glasses were parked within the vicinity of the police station.
Sources however said she broke down emotionally when she was brought in and had refused to eat.
Speaking with Senate correspondents, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Information, Senator Ayogu Eze, said: “I am aware that she has appeared in court. We commend her decision to honour the invitation by the court.
“Senate expected no less. There was nothing to compel her before to appear before the court. The law will take its course because we expect no less.
“As a law abiding citizen, she has decided to answer the court summons. She is one of us and we will stand by her throughout her trial.”
Obasanjo-Bello had not been seen in public since April 8, 2008 when the EFCC told the Abuja High Court that she was “at large.”

Eedris Abdulkareem who has suffered hard criticisms from rap critics and fans alike because of his self proclaimed African King Of Rap is confident in his ability to dominate the rap scene and regain his ‘abandoned’ rap title via his fifth effort aptly titled The King is Back which was released on the 29th of March by Alaba’s rave-of-the-moment marketer, Afrobest; marketer of Olu Maintain and 9ice’s albums.

Invited guests that were present at the Eedris’ album listening party held two days before the album’s release were amazed at the rapper’s latest offering which they suggest surpasses all of their expectations.

You would recall that the controversial rapper, broke his three year silence in music industry circuit with a brilliant performance at the Media Launch of the Kora All Africa Music Awards where millions of viewing audience witnessed his special performance in honor of international rap superstar 50Cent. At the said event, the Eedris expressed his profound apologies to 50cent for a misunderstanding that resulted in a face-off that almost marred his musical career. Now Eedris Abdulkareem has seized the opportunity provided by the positive media attention he has currently been receiving to unveil his fifth album which his latest single titled Last Man Standing.

Maybe I’m getting musically deaf, but shouldn’t an Eedris Abdulkareem album, plus news about a collabo with Ruggedman be generating some kinda buzz like right now? Beats me! Anyway, I hear he is working on a couple of music videos that should be on air anytime soon. Those who have had sneak previews of the video say it is going to keep the streets talking for a long time..I hope so!!

The Best Rap Album category since the induction of the coronation, last year, has become the most sought after award by Hiphop heads.

The maiden edition of The Coronation was held last year. It showcased a short documentary chronicling Hiphop’s History as well as the celebration of some of Hiphop’s cultural elements. Deejays, Rappers, Break Dancers and Graffiti Artistes as well as many reputable hippop icons were present to witness the coronation of rapper, Freestyle Essien who was the recipient for Best Rap Album at the awards last year.

While Ruggedman awaits his Coronation, he is putting finishing touches to his six tracker Video CD compilation for his Award Winning Album, Ruggeddy Baba.
20  Forum / The Buzz Central / aki and pawpaw banned from playing adult roles on: 14-05-2008 11:02 PM
Nollywood actors, Chinedu Ikhedieze and Osita Iheme popularly known as Aki and Pawpaw may be banned by the Marketers and Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) from taking adult roles in movies. The move was as a result of complaints by parents whose kids and teenagers are heavily influenced by the actors. The duo in recent times has played adult roles of questionable character that parents argue have very negative influence on their kids and teenagers.

The chairman of the board of trustees of the guild, Mr. Ifeanyi Dike, stated that the board had been receiving numerous complaints from concerned parents on the issue but they [that is the board] were reluctant to take action at first. Owing to increasing complaints, the board have decided the restrain the actors from playing adult roles especially roles that did not portray them as ambassadors of good moral values.

“Aki and Pawpaw are role models to kids because they help some companies to advertise products like biscuit, sweets among others. So we want them to do more responsible roles,” he said.

Mr. Ifeanyi Dike also stated that henceforth the duo are banned from playing roles that would require them to smoke, romance women or act as peeping toms. Although the chairman of the guild noted that movies with such explicit contents were expected to be viewed by an audience above the age of 18yrs, he was aware that such laws have not been properly enforced in Nigeria and that the ban was necessary in order to reduce the amount of profanity that children were exposed to via Nollywood movies.[/b]
