President of Ghana Prof. John Evans Atta Mills should use his tongue to count his teeth by using his veto power in suppressing this law else his government will be put to shame. Africa hasn`t gotten to this stage we are taking it to. Such laws are meant for developed countries and not for developing countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya etc  No Nigerian petty trader with $300,000USD would choose to invest in Ghana if he had that amount of money.

The bottomline is that Ghanaians have always been envious of Nigerians, not only in Ghana, but anywhere in the world.
This unreasonable business guildline set even for a small business is obviously aimed at driving out Nigerians whom they perceive as dominating and controlling their economy.

LAGOS—Nigerian businessmen operating in Ghana yesterday cried out to the Nigerian government to come to their rescue as Ghanaian authorities have commenced closing their shops for allegedly operating illegally.

The Nigerian traders said their shops were closed because they were said not to comply with the government policy which requires them to have an initial capital of $300,000 and employ 10 Ghanaians before they can start any business in Ghana regardless of the size of the business.

A market in Ghana

One of the affected Nigerians, Mr Ndukaku Mbanefo, who spoke to Vanguard on phone from Ghana said the Ghanaian authorities started closing shops belonging to Nigerians yesterday in Accra, the Ghanaian capital and vowed that the operation will be nationwide.

According to him, “the authorities in Ghana yesterday closed more than 40 shops belonging to Nigerians and they are still closing more. They closed our shops because they said we did not comply with the government policy that requires every foreigner who wants to start business in Ghana to have an initial capital of $300, 000 and must employ 10 Ghanaians to work with him regardless of the size of the business. Even if it is just a small restaurant or a barber shop you must employ 10 Ghanaians and show evidence that you have $300,000 before you can start.

“There are nationals of other West African countries like Mali, Cote D’Ivoire, Niger, Cameroon who operate shops in Ghana like us but the Ghanaian authorities would not touch them. They target only Nigerians and I don’t know why. In spite of all we do to boost their economy and contribute to raise their standard of living, they don’t care, they just hate Nigerians and discriminate against us”.

He explained that “some Nigerian traders had to run away and locked up their shops when they saw the Ghanaian law enforcement agents coming but when the law enforcement agents got to the shops, they would relock the shops with their security padlocks. Their plan was to give out these shops abandoned by Nigerian businessmen to the Ghanaians”.

He therefore appealed to the Nigerian government to intervene and protect their businesses saying Nigerians who operate businesses in Ghana are law abiding and hard working, arguing that “we should be allowed to operate under the Ecowas trade treaty.

When the Foreign Affairs Ministry was contacted yesterday on the plight of Nigerian businessmen in Ghana, a source told Vanguard that the Ministry is aware of it and that the Federal Government has stepped into the matter. He said the Federal Government has reached out to its Ghanaian counterpart and that those affected should not rush to the ECOWAS court as they have threatened.

Ghanaian authorities have been embarking on hostile business practices against Nigerians who are predominantly in real estate, textile and garments, electronics, banking and telecommunication and tourism. The Ghanaian government had imposed high tariff on Nigerian movies and restricted Nigerian actors from shooting films in Ghana. Nigeria’s telecommunication giant, Globacom was caught up with the high cost of doing business which caused it to delay some crucial aspects of its operations last year. The presidential candidate of Labour Party Otunba Dele Momodu, said the attitude of Ghanaian government is a flagrant violation of the ECOWAS protocol and that the Nigerians who are doing business in Ghana hold the key to Ghana’s economic revival. He said Nigeria must stand up to the  maltreatment of Nigerian in Ghana because Nigeria has been too good to their West African neighbour.

Lagos state Government had said yesterday that Nigerians should stop empowering Ghanaians and other West Africa countries by taking businesses to those countries at the detriment of Nigeria. Sources said Ghanaians are very jittery about Nigerians especially those who are in real estate business who are buying out their Ghanaian counterparts. Nigeria supplies electricity to Ghana and under the Obasanjo administration Ghana got over One hundred million dollar loans from Nigeria.

37  Forum / Religion / JTF killed 17 gunmen in Kano –Police on: 28-06-2012 10:03 AM
Police in Kano State have  said the Joint Security Task Force killed 17 and arrested three suspected Boko Haram members who attacked security formations in the state on Tuesday.

Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, gave the figures in Kano on Wednesday

Idris said three assault rifles, 220 live ammunition and large quantity of drugs and syringes were recovered from the attackers.

He said the security agents had also defused 14 Improvised Explosive Devices planted by the suspects.

He said five cars, three motorcycles and N100,000 were recovered after the incident.

“On Tuesday in the evening some extremists launched sporadic attacks with bombs and assault rifles on Dala Police Division, Panshekara Division, Jakara Police Barracks and 52 Squadron, Challawa,” Idris said.

The gunmen, who were about 30 in number attacked the police formations with assault rifles and IEDs and the policemen repelled the attacks.

The commissioner said 10 of the gunmen were killed and three others arrested at Dala Division.

However, he said Corporal Saidu Umar was killed by the attackers, who also injured Sgt. Baba Williams.

At the Jakara Police Barracks, he said, the gunmen threw explosives at a disused police out-post, and shattered part of the structure, but policemen on guard killed two of them.

Idris  said, “The extremists had attempted to attack the Goron Dutse Prison Yard, but the men on duty repelled the attack with no loss of life or property.”

He said another group attacked the 52 Squadron and Panshekara Police Division at about 8.30pm, but both attacks were repelled.

He said five gunmen were killed, and one at a private residence in Sabuwar Abuja, Panshekara where explosives went off.

Idris added that some explosives went off in a classroom at Sabuwar Doka Junior Secondary School in a suburb of Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano, at about 8pm, but that there was no loss of life or injury.

Spokesman for the JTF, Ikedichi Iweha, said in an email message, “At 18.10hrs on 26 June 2012, multiple Improvised Explosive Devices were detonated by members of the terrorist sect at Goron Dutse and Dala areas of Kano akin to the 20 January 2012 attacks in the state.”

David Erhabor, husband  of a former commissioner in Edo State, Florence Igbinigie-Erhabor, on Wednesday, told a Benin High Court, that his wife of 15 years once came home without putting on pant.

He said, “There was a day she came back home drunk and without a pant on her. She was in the habit of keeping late nights.”

David while testifying in a divorce suit, No HAB/16D/2011, instituted by his wife, a former Commissioner for Women Affairs, under Chief Lucky Igbinedion, told the court he did not envisage a broken home in his life.

The respondent said trouble started after his wife was appointed commissioner, after which he said she began keeping late nights.

David, an ex-Senior Adviser to former Governor Oswerhiemen Osunbor, told the court that there was a time the wife abandoned their two children, absconded from home for three days, “only to be caught red-handed inside a vehicle, romancing and kissing a man who had earlier gassed him.”

David recalled that it took the intervention of a former chairman of Delta State Oil Producing Community Development Commission, Chief Wellington Okrika, to resolve some of their matrimonial crises.

He also said his wife had once demanded N1m from him before she could allow  him to have sex with her, adding that on another occasion, he ran from home when he sensed that his wife was planning to send hired assassins after him.

On the custody of their children, David said they could always stay with whoever they chose when on holidays.

Florence among other prayers is asking the court to grant her divorce on the grounds of threat to life, violent assault and infidelity on the part of her husband.

The former commissioner, who has since 2009 separated from her husband, is demanding that she should be paid N150, 000 as monthly upkeep for each of their children. She also wants Erhabor to be compelled to pay the children’s school fees.

While being crossed-examined by David’s lawyer, Mr. Akakhomen Austine, Florence said her husband had at a time squeezed the children inside a vehicle and threatened to set them ablaze. She said it took the intervention of members of both families to broker peace.

The former commissioner said she had been solely responsible for the children’s upkeep, including payment of their school fees over the past years.

She added that the children had been living in her family house where she relocated to when she suspected that her husband was after her life.

She also accused David of having extra-marital affair with their housemaid.

Justice Anthony Erhabor adjourned the case till August 4 for further hearing.
39  Forum / Politics / How Boko Haram kingpin Bama died 24 hours after gun duel on: 23-06-2012 12:11 PM
Details of the capture of   Boko Haram high ranking operative, Bama, in Damaturu, Yobe State, emerged last night with a source saying he was shot in what is called Sudden Operation in security circles.

This kind of operation happens by chance.

Bama died early yesterday of gunshot wounds he received while being arrested by security men at a Damaturu market.

Sources said Bama was surrounded at the time by his body guards who were armed to the teeth, and the only way he could be arrested was to demobilise him, which was effected by shooting him in the leg.

Two men, described as key members of the sect were arrested with Bama and are now undergoing interrogation.

A top source gave an insight into the operation and said: “What happened actually was that it was a Sudden Operation or a happenstance. Somebody in the JTF team just spotted him buying something in the midst of heavily armed members of the sect and the JTF men went for him.

“The routine operation would have been fatal for the JTF men if they had attempted to capture Bama. Being a wanted figure, the JTF did not know the extent to which he was armed with his foot men.

“The real intention was to incapacitate him. That was why he was shot in the leg. But he bled much between the spot and the medical centre.

“The JTF men knew he was an important figure but if he was not immediately incapacitated, he could escape because he knew Damaturu and Yobe very well. He was familiar with the terrain.

“And the shooting really helped as some armed members of the sect, who accompanied him, ran away, having realised that the game was up.

“Even at that, Bama was given the best of medical treatment to save his life. In the midst of the battle to save his life, he provided some lead for JTF.

“As JTF men were battling to evacuate Bama and stave off reprisals, they managed to arrest two key members of the sect, who were also demobilised.

“These two suspects, who accompanied Bama to the market, are still being interrogated and may be flown to Abuja latest by Friday night.

“I can tell you that they have made useful statements.”

Bama could not survive the gunshot wounds and was certified dead early yesterday by doctors who had battled for several hours to save his life.

Security has subsequently been beefed up in and around Yobe and Borno states following fears of retaliatory action by members of the sect.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the condition of the dismissed army private deteriorated late on Thursday with his pulse ‘suddenly’dropping. Doctors’ efforts to restore his breath failed.

His corpse was transferred to a morgue in Damaturu, but it could not be immediately ascertained if the authorities would approve Islamic burial (Janazah) for him.

A top source in the Joint Task Force (JTF) said: “Dismissed Army Private, Habib Bama, who masterminded several bombings by Boko Haram in the Federal Capital Territory, Niger and Plateau States is dead.

“He died of gunshot wounds he received on Thursday during his arrest by the Joint Task Force in Damaturu, Yobe State. .“He was critically wounded on Thursday when we tried to arrest him and he resisted. He died this morning (Friday) from the gunshot wounds.”

The source added: “He was clinically certified dead in the early hours of Friday. I cannot tell you where he died and the morgue we have kept the corpse.

“But I can say that security agencies were able to interrogate him even while in pain and he was able to respond to some questions.”

The source, however, said the JTF has beefed up security in the Borno-Yobe axis because of likely retaliatory measures by members of the sect.

“It was unfortunate that Bama died of gunshots. We had planned to fly him to Abuja for the best treatment, but he could not just make it.

“The JTF has been mandated to strengthen security in Borno and Yobe states because of reprisals from members of Boko Haram, who are well entrenched in the two states.

The late Bama was implicated in the bombings at Mogadishu Barracks, Police Headquarters, UN Building, St Theresa’s Catholic Church at Madalla and many sites in Jos.

He was declared wanted by Security agents after the Madalla church bomb blast.

The manhunt for Bama commenced on February 15, 2012 when the State Security Service (SSS) declared him wanted.
40  Forum / Politics / Police uncover bomb in Kano mosque on: 23-06-2012 12:00 PM
Tragedy was averted in the Kano metropolis on Friday when the police uncovered a bomb planted in Fagge Juma’at Mosque.

Fagge mosque located on Murtala Muhammad Way in WAPA area of Fagge Local Government is rated second among the big Eid (Sallah prayer) mosques in Kano.

It is beside Fagge Police Division, one of the popular police locations in the city.

The prompt discovery averted what could have been described as the bloodiest terrorist attack in the city since the last Jan 20 coordinated bomb and gun attacks in the city.

Three suspected Boko Haram members were arrested by the police for planting explosives in the mosque.

The suspected bombers had concealed the high volume Improvised Explosive Device in a plastic bag and entered the mosque undetected.

They afterwards neatly planted the bomb in the prayer house with capacity of about 15,000 worshipers inside and another 50,000 in its surroundings.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, confirmed that three suspects were arrested within the mosque’s vicinity.

He said, “The person that planted the explosive came inside the mosque before the prayer time.

“He concealed the explosive in a plastic container, dropped it, sat down, picked a Koran and pretended to be reciting verses from the Holy Book.

“After some minutes, he went outside, came in again, sat in the same position and pretended to be reading the Holy Book.

“After a while, he went outside, abandoned the plastic and never returned. At this point, the mosque committee suspected the plastic container and alerted the police.

“When the anti-bomb squad arrived at the mosque, they brought the plastic container outside, checked the content and discovered it was an explosive; and they immediately defused it,” the CP said.

However, Idris advised residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement or strange item dumped anywhere to security agents.

“People should be very careful even in the mosque and churches.

“Worshipers should not be allowed to come inside places of worship with strange materials,” he further advised.
